A Conversation With The ‘Tadpaoge Tadpa Lo’ Actress Shubha Khote
Image
The ‘reel’ world on the internet is right now reeling under the influence of a vintage Lata Mangeshkar song ‘Tadpaoge tadpa lo hum tadap tadap ke tumhare geet gayenge’.

The breezy catchy number composed by Chitragupta was part of a film titled Barkha in 1959. It was filmed on veteran actress Shubha Khote who is now 87.

Speaking to her now feels otherworldly.

She is aware of the her song’s sudden surge of popularity. “I wouldn’t call it my song. But yes, I had the privilege of lip-syncing it on screen. It was my privilege to have Lataji sing for me. Normally she sang only for the heroine. But on this occasion she sang for me although I was not the heroine, Nanda was. I think it was because of Lataji’s family relations with the composer Chitragupta.”

Did Shubhaji think the song ‘Tadpaoge tadpa lo’ would be so popular...

Image
It has been 30 Years since Raj Kumar Santoshi‘s comedy Andaz Apna Apna hit the big screen. Starringthe incredible cast of Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, and Shakti Kapoor the film today is a cult classic.

Speaking with Subhash K Jha, Raj Kumar Santoshi looks back at Andaz Apna Apna which is consideres his most iconic film.

Would you say Andaz Apna Apna is your most important film to date?

In terms of reach and durability? Yes , I would go with that. It is a more important film than Ghayal, Ghatak or Lajja, my serious films. Laughter has a longer life. I am so glad Andaz Apna Apna is able to provide laughter for generations. Today when I see the kind comedy that is doing well, I feel very depressed. There is no dignity in what they are serving up as comedy. I may not...

‘Andaz Apna Apna’: The Best Bollywood (Midnight?) Movie the West Has Never Heard About
Image
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.

The Pitch: A Star-Studded Cult Comedy That Doesn’t Fit in Any Bollywood Box

The year was 2000. The place: A local South Asian grocery store in suburban Michigan. The occasion: Friday night, baby, the night for browsing the store’s DVD library for a rental, and my father’s pick for the week — “Andaz Apna Apna.”

I don’t think Rajkumar Santoshi’s seminal comedy was made with a nine-year-old American girl in mind, but I ate the film up. It’s not overtly childish or adult, but boasts the kind...

Sanjay Mishra in Har Kisse Ke Hisse: Kaamyaab (2018)
“Kaamyaab is a Very Rare and Precious Film“ – A Subhash K Jha Review
Sanjay Mishra in Har Kisse Ke Hisse: Kaamyaab (2018)
Kaamyaab

Starring Sanjay Mishra, Deepak Dobriyal,Sareeka Singh

Written & Directed by Hardik Mehta

Kaamyaab is a very rare and precious film. It takes us into the lives of those unsung senior artistes who are not ‘junior artistes’—that derogatory term given to the blur of people who stands in crowds – but aren’t stars neither.

We could call them the Nowhere People, na idhar ke na udhar ke…Think about Om Prakash, Kanhaiyalal, Manmohan Krishna, Nasir Hussain, Iftiker,…They are all gone remembered for the way they blended into the fabric of the films that they kept appearing in with stubborn persistence. Kaamyaab has quaint cameo space for all the fringe players. In fact the film is dedicated to one of them Viju Khote who passed away in October 2019.

But the film belongs to Sanjay Mishra who plays Sudheer a bit player like the potato in a vegetable dish which...
