Questlove Honors ‘Giant’ Sly Stone: ‘His Music Will Echo Forever’
Image
Questlove is remembering the late great, Sly Stone. In a lengthy and emotional Instagram post, the musician — who directed the documentary Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius), about Stone’s life and has long described him as an inspiration — reflected on the legend’s legacy and enduring impact on music at large.

“Sly Stone, born Sylvester Stewart, left this earth today, but the changes he sparked while here will echo forever. From the moment his music reached me in the early 1970s, it became a part of my soul,...

Questlove Set Out to Answer One Question With the Documentary ‘Sly Lives!’: What Is Black Genius?
Image
Editor’s note: This interview was conducted before Sly Stone’s death at age 82. Read Questlove’s tribute to Stone here.

In the first five minutes of Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius), Questlove’s documentary on the funk band Sly and the Family Stone, he poses a question to a star-studded collection of such talking heads as Chaka Khan, Nile Rodgers, Jimmy Jam and Q-Tip: How do you define Black genius?

The question mostly elicits chuckles and head shakes, as his interviewees seem unsure how to answer. When posed with that question himself, however, Questlove (real name Ahmir Thompson) doesn’t hesitate. “I think the answer is just showing up,” he says. “Not talking yourself out of things, which we tend to do subconsciously. You being — that’s Black genius.”

Questlove says he first heard the phrase “Black genius” listening to Donny Hathaway’s cover of Stevie Wonder...

5 Embarrassing First Songs from Famous Divas
Image
If you look at the biographies of the most famous singers of all-time, you’ll sometimes see that the world immediately recognized their talent. Take Mariah Carey. The very first demo tape she recorded led to a bidding war between rival studios. Columbia Records went all-out when promoting her, and her debut album went platinum nine times over. Her first single, “Vision of Love,” was one of the biggest songs of 1990 and indeed was one of the biggest of the entire 1990s.

With other artists? Their first song is one that you’ve never heard before and which, perhaps, they’d rather you’d never hear at all.

5 ‘Ringo I Love You’ by Cher

Cher really was born with the name “Cher” — or “Cheryl Sarkisian,” which is close enough. For her very first single, however, she went by the name of Bonnie Jo Mason, which was the sort of wholesome...

Top Gun: Maverick Director Joseph Kosinski Is Making A New Miami Vice Movie
Image
If you're looking for a filmmaker to take a zeitgeist-y, high-octane, beloved slice of 80s pop culture and turn it into 21st century blockbuster gold, you could do far worse than hire the director who gave us Top Gun: Maverick. Which is why it makes perfect sense then that for their upcoming big screen retooling of synthed-out, super-stylised 80s NBC cop show Miami Vice, Universal Pictures have done precisely that. Yes, as reported by Deadline, none other than Joseph Kosinski is set to helm the studio's new Miami Vice movie, the first since Michael Mann's 2006 effort starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.

Penned by Nightcrawler writer-director — and brother of Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy — Dan Gilroy, apparently this take on Miami Vice, which at its core is about two sharply dressed undercover detectives busting drug dealers on the Miami strip while listening to bona fide era appropriate bangers, has been in the offing for sometime.

‘The Voice’ Season 27 Episode 11 recap: Kelsea steals an artist from Adam because she ‘wouldn’t do good in jail’
Image
The Voice Season 27 continued the third stage of the competition on Monday with the third installment of "Knockouts" performances. In this round, each coach will set four head-to-head matchups from their team and will be forced to choose only four winners. While they won't be able to save any of the losers from their own team, each coach will have a Steal to bring a loser from another team with them to "The Playoffs." By the end of the round's 16 performances, 20 artists will remain in the competition.

One hallmark of this round is that the artists get to choose their own song to perform rather than have it selected by their coach, as was done in the "Battles." Another is that without guest mentors assisting during rehearsals, it's the first time that John Legend, Kelsea Ballerini, Michael Bublé and Adam Levine get to work one-on-one with the artists on their team.

As The Voice brought its Season 27 Knockouts to a close Monday evening, five more contestants were issued mic-drop moments — as in “Drop the mic and go.” Losing one would-be winner in particular really bummed me out, too, especially after the performance that she’d just given. ‘The greatest performance I have ever seen’: ‘American Idol’ showstoppers round sends 4 contestants straight into the Top 24
Image
Tonight on American Idol — the top 62 contestants continued their Hollywood Week experience in the Showstoppers Round, where they took the stage once more to prove they've got the vocal prowess and charisma to become America's next superstar. Like last week's Idol Arena, each contestant performed in front of judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, and then had to wait until the end of the night to find out who advanced in the competition. Unlike last week, they got zero feedback. The two-hour episode aired Sunday, April 6 (8 p.m. Et/Pt) with Ryan Seacrest hosting.

There were certainly plenty of showstoppers throughout the night, but the judges all agreed that the best was saved for last. Platinum Ticket winner Canaan James Hill was feeling the pressure as he waited to hit the stage, but the 17-year-old didn't show it when he belted out Marvin Sapp's "Never Would Have Made It.

Patti Labelle Says Elton John Never Returned Her Tupperware
Image
Patti Labelle and Elton John have quite a history together. He first backed her on piano when he was with Bluesology, years before he was “Elton John,” and the two later recorded together in the ‘00s. Yet, when recently asked what the first story that comes to mind when she hears John’s name, Labelle had a clear answer: the time he stole her Tupperware.

Labelle detailed the incident in an appearance on Sherri, explaining that it occurred when she was performing in London in the ‘60s with Bluesology as her backing band. She invited the musicians over to her place to play cards — including a young John, then still named Reginald Dwightt — and upon winning, she took “all their pounds, all their money,” not even leaving them with enough to buy food.

In the exclusive clip below, the film looks at the impact of the band’s hit song “Everyday People.”

After hearing the lyric “we’ve got to live together,” music producer and songwriter, Jimmy Jam, states, “That’s the first time you hear that sentiment from a Black artist. There was a utopianism that people were ready to buy into. That female and male and Black and white can create another world.

Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius) Sundance Review — Questlove One-Ups Himself with an Exquisite Music Documentary
Image
After winning the Oscar for Best Documentary for his feature debut, Summer of Soul, Amir “Questlove” Thompson is returning to filmmaking with his sophomore feature, Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius). While the concept behind his second film might seem like a more straightforward biography, Questlove brings such a refreshingly deep approach to his subject that the result is utterly fantastic.

Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius) Review

Sly Lives! tells the story of Sly and the Family Stone — one of the most influential groups of all time in Black music history and music history as a whole. Questlove already got a taste of Sly and the Family Stone’s story in Summer of Soul, ending his first film with their performance at the Harlem Cultural Festival, but in this film, he dives deep into the group and its frontman’s story and legacy.

‘Sly Lives!’ is More Than Just Questlove’s Doc on Sly Stone. It’s a Funked-Up Look at Genius
Image
The song titles alone evoke a sense of joy, excitement, community: “Dance to the Music,” “Stand!”, “Everyday People,” “Sing a Simple Song,” “I Want to Take You Higher,” “Hot Fun in the Summertime,” “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” “Everybody Is a Star.” (That last one was also the headline of its creator’s Rolling Stone cover story.) You know every one of these tracks. Trust us. If you’re not automatically singing their hooks — “Diff-rent/Strokes!/For diff-rent/Folks!” or “I-i-i-i/Love Ev-ery-day/People!” — or humming their melodies while reading the above list,...

‘Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius)’ Review: Questlove’s Admiring Portrait Gives Sly Stone His Flowers
Image
There’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in Summer of Soul, Questlove’s rousing documentary about the Harlem Cultural Festival, when Sly Stone turns away from the microphone to look at his bandmates. It’s the late 60s and Sly & the Family Stone are performing their hit “Everyday People” to an enthused, multigenerational crowd. Attendees sway and clap, so attentive that they seem possessed. But there’s something particularly special about the way Sly spins around, faces his bandmates and starts dancing to their music. It’s as if they — the seven members of this dazzling funk group — are the only ones in the park and Sly, an exceptional artist tortured by fame’s unruly demands, can do anything.

That scene gains greater resonance after watching Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius), Questlove’s admiring portrait of a generational talent. The doc, which like Summer of Soul premiered at Sundance,...

Image

(aka The Burden of Black Genius) at Park City’s sure to be sold-out Eccles Theatre, it’s will be a whole new Sundance for the Summer of Soul director and Academy Award winner.

And not just because Queatlove is widely expected to put on his headphones and spin some tracks for a dancing crowd this weekend in the Utah resort town. It’s a whole new Sundance because it turns out the trailblazing life, music and legacy of the now 81-year-old Sly Stone has permeated across many aspects and avenues of multitasker Questlove’s own life and work.

Review: Richard Pryor’s ‘Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling’ on Criterion 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
With its fractured narrative, complete with a gimmicky spectral figure guiding us through the proceedings, Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling is Richard Pryor’s All That Jazz. Playing like a greatest hits collection of Pryor’s stand-up routines, it begins with the titular character freebasing his way into a hospital burn unit, features him pulling a starter pistol on the mafia, and shows him destroying his wife’s car when she threatens to leave him.

Jo Jo Dancer’s profession mirrors Pryor’s own, as does his backstory: The film was shot in Peoria, Illinois, Pryor’s hometown and the location of the brothel where both he and Jo Jo grew up. Columbia Pictures wouldn’t grant Bob Fosse’s wish to play All That Jazz’s Joe Gideon, but they let Pryor play himself, or “himself” as it were, creating a meta experience before meta was cool.
