In the first five minutes of Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius), Questlove’s documentary on the funk band Sly and the Family Stone, he poses a question to a star-studded collection of such talking heads as Chaka Khan, Nile Rodgers, Jimmy Jam and Q-Tip: How do you define Black genius?

The question mostly elicits chuckles and head shakes, as his interviewees seem unsure how to answer. When posed with that question himself, however, Questlove (real name Ahmir Thompson) doesn’t hesitate. “I think the answer is just showing up,” he says. “Not talking yourself out of things, which we tend to do subconsciously. You being — that’s Black genius.”

Earlier tonight, April 14, 2025, NBC aired another new episode of The Voice's current season 27, and it featured another new, 3rd round of the Knockouts portion of this season. The celebrity coaches/judges: John Legend, Kelsea Ballerini, Michael Buble and Adam Levine were all on hand once again. In the Knockouts rounds, the coaches chose two contestants from their team to sing-off against each other to a song of their choice. Afterwards, the coaches chose the winner. The losing contestant got eliminated or stolen by a coach from another team. Tonight's performances kicked off with Nell Simmons vs Renzo from Team John Legend. Nell sang “Sweet Thing” by Chaka Khan. Renzo sang, “Happier Than Ever” by Billie Eilish. Afterwards, Adam said, "Nell did a wonderful job singing Chaka Khan. Renzo has a unicorn energy, and I will be shocked if he doesn’t make it to the end."...

The Voice Season 27 continued the third stage of the competition on Monday with the third installment of "Knockouts" performances. In this round, each coach will set four head-to-head matchups from their team and will be forced to choose only four winners. While they won't be able to save any of the losers from their own team, each coach will have a Steal to bring a loser from another team with them to "The Playoffs." By the end of the round's 16 performances, 20 artists will remain in the competition.

One hallmark of this round is that the artists get to choose their own song to perform rather than have it selected by their coach, as was done in the "Battles." Another is that without guest mentors assisting during rehearsals, it's the first time that John Legend, Kelsea Ballerini, Michael Bublé and Adam Levine get to work one-on-one with the artists on their team.

As The Voice brought its Season 27 Knockouts to a close Monday evening, five more contestants were issued mic-drop moments — as in “Drop the mic and go.” Losing one would-be winner in particular really bummed me out, too, especially after the performance that she’d just given. (You can watch it below.) Before I start crying in my beer, though, let’s discuss that face-off and all of the others, too.

The weekslong Swiss music celebration, Montreux Jazz Festival, revealed a typically diverse lineup of artists on Thursday for its 59th annual gathering, which will take place from July 4 – 19 in the titular city. Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts, Diana Ross, Benson Boone, Brandi Carlile, J Balvin, Noah Kahan, Lionel Richie, Santana, Pulp, Alanis Morissette, the Black Keys, Jamie Xx, Beth Gibbons, Raye, Finneas, and Shaboozey, among several others, will all perform. Tonight on American Idol — the top 62 contestants continued their Hollywood Week experience in the Showstoppers Round, where they took the stage once more to prove they've got the vocal prowess and charisma to become America's next superstar. Like last week's Idol Arena, each contestant performed in front of judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, and then had to wait until the end of the night to find out who advanced in the competition. Unlike last week, they got zero feedback. The two-hour episode aired Sunday, April 6 (8 p.m. Et/Pt) with Ryan Seacrest hosting.

There were certainly plenty of showstoppers throughout the night, but the judges all agreed that the best was saved for last. Platinum Ticket winner Canaan James Hill was feeling the pressure as he waited to hit the stage, but the 17-year-old didn't show it when he belted out Marvin Sapp's "Never Would Have Made It.

American Idol won’t officially solidify its Top 24 until Monday (ABC, 8/7c), but early congratulations are in order to four lucky contestants who just learned that they’ve already made the cut.

Sunday’s Showstoppers round ended with the judges delivering some difficult news to several Idol hopefuls, before gathering four more singers — Canaan James Hill, Gabby Samone, Zaylie Windsor and Mattie Pruitt — for the ultimate fake-out.

Patti Labelle and Elton John have quite a history together. He first backed her on piano when he was with Bluesology, years before he was “Elton John,” and the two later recorded together in the ‘00s. Yet, when recently asked what the first story that comes to mind when she hears John’s name, Labelle had a clear answer: the time he stole her Tupperware.

Labelle detailed the incident in an appearance on Sherri, explaining that it occurred when she was performing in London in the ‘60s with Bluesology as her backing band. After winning the Oscar for Best Documentary for his feature debut, Summer of Soul, Amir “Questlove” Thompson is returning to filmmaking with his sophomore feature, Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius). While the concept behind his second film might seem like a more straightforward biography, Questlove brings such a refreshingly deep approach to his subject that the result is utterly fantastic.

Sly Lives! tells the story of Sly and the Family Stone — one of the most influential groups of all time in Black music history and music history as a whole. Questlove already got a taste of Sly and the Family Stone’s story in Summer of Soul, ending his first film with their performance at the Harlem Cultural Festival, but in this film, he dives deep into the group and its frontman’s story and legacy.

The “Hollywood Squares” promotion continues as CBS announced on Thursday that it will be giving the hit game show a special week-long daytime birth with encore episodes airing in the daypart during the week of January 27-31, replacing previously scheduled repeat episodes of “The Price is Right” in the 2:00 p.m. Et/1:00 p.m. Ct/Pt slot vacated by the now-canceled talk show “The Talk,” which concluded its 15 season run last month. Encores of “The Price is Right” are expected to resume on Monday, February 3 in the time slot.

Another schedule change for Hollywood Squares.

Beginning Wednesday, Jan. 29, Hollywood Squares will air at 8 pm, followed by The Price Is Right At Night at 9 pm and Raid the Cage at 10 pm, Hollywood Squares‘ previous timeslot, CBS announced Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, Super Bowl Greatest Commercials will air a one-time-only special episode. The Wednesday game night schedule will resume the following week.

Three days after Hollywood Square reboot’s Jan. 16 premiere on CBS, the game show will get major exposure behind the network’s telecast of the AFC Divisional Playoff Game between Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills on Jan. 19.

There will be a familiar face for football fans as Hollywood Squares is hosted by NFL analyst (and CBS Mornings co-host) Nate Burleson. The game show features Drew Barrymore in the center square, joined by celebrity guests in every episode. New names added to the guest lineup include Jay Leno, Whitney Cummings, Pete Holmes, Chaka Khan, Thomas Lennon, Nelly, Patton Oswalt, Nicole Byer, Drew Carey, Jeff Dunham, Max Greenfield, Lil Rel Howery, Rita Moreno and Jb Smoove.

With its fractured narrative, complete with a gimmicky spectral figure guiding us through the proceedings, Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling is Richard Pryor’s All That Jazz. Playing like a greatest hits collection of Pryor’s stand-up routines, it begins with the titular character freebasing his way into a hospital burn unit, features him pulling a starter pistol on the mafia, and shows him destroying his wife’s car when she threatens to leave him.

Jo Jo Dancer’s profession mirrors Pryor’s own, as does his backstory: The film was shot in Peoria, Illinois, Pryor’s hometown and the location of the brothel where both he and Jo Jo grew up. Columbia Pictures wouldn’t grant Bob Fosse’s wish to play All That Jazz’s Joe Gideon, but they let Pryor play himself, or “himself” as it were, creating a meta experience before meta was cool.
