Previously Saif Ali Khan,Vidya Balan8, Deepika Padukone's names were attached to the project. At one point when Saif Ali Khan exited the film,Abhay Deol and Vivaan Shah were considered for the project. But then the film got shelved and nothing was heard away from it. A writer was working on a project some years later for Vishal, when he read the screenplay and heard the backstory, it just blew his mind. The film was based on a concept by Mukul Sharma (a science writer and Konkona's father) written in the 70s The novel was titled "Dream Sequence". Based on a woman who dreams about waking up but can't wake up. Nobody was interested in that concept because it was considered too absurd in Hindi films. Finally, years later, Vishal heard it and loved it. He developed it into a screenplay but then again, for years, nobody was interested in the idea. Saif read the script and loved it but sadly, no producer did. And then, another movie released based on a similar idea which became a historical hit. That film was the Hollywood film,Inception. It was a pure coincidence and the stories were based of the same idea but different in execution. Dream Sequence still remains one of the finest screenplays Vishal read. Suddenly, producers were interested in it, and Dream Sequence was finally announced with Madhuri and Irrfan. But the problems weren't over. The producers wanted to make Dream Sequence "more like Inception but still Indian." Vishal got frustrated at the producers ruining his script and decided to shelve it.
