Subhash K Jha celebrates Irrfan Khan snd Dulquer’s comedy drama, Karwaan, which hit the big screen in 2018. We also hear from the director about working with the Irrfan Khan on Karwaan and more.
Excavating humour from the innards of mortality is never easy. Writer-Director Akarsh Khurana attempts the near-impossible and comes up with a film that never offends, even when it poses some serious problems of pacing.
You know that the film is looking for ways to keep the journey going when there are unnecessary detours on the way. And why not?! Dulquer’s Avinash is a repressed unhappy 10-5 geek who hates his bullying boss (Adhaar Khurana) and wants nothing more, nothing less, than to break out of his executive dungeon and …well, just shoot pictures with an actual camera, not its digital doppelgangers.

Subhash K Jha Looks back at 7½ Phere: More Than A Wedding, the Irrfan Khan-Juhi Chawla black comedy, 7½ Phere, which released in 2005.
A large Hindu wedding and an over-eager tv crew recording the event for posterity… those are the two sides aligned in the same range of vision in debutant director Ishaan Trivedi’s quirky and often-times corny look at the lighter of side of ritualistic Hindu events.
The joints in the joint-family creak and lapse into a giggle now and then groan to a grinding halt. Trivedi’s thesis is largely lacking in thunder. He repeatedly gives away his antecedents on television by making the characters stand taller and off the boundary lines of credible characterization. The plethora of passionately perky people who populate Trivedi’s films look like a cross between sitcom stereotypes and stand-up comics.
There are seeds of a glorious comic romp in the satire.

Subhash K Jha looks back at Madaari, and we hear from actor extraordinaire, Irrfan Khan, about the social drama that released in 2016 in a other fabulous installment of This Day That Year.
Nishikant Kamat’s Madaari, which completes nine years on July 22, is not the first film that raises the burning issue of corruption by espousing vigilantism. But Madaari moves you to tears. I had to watch it twice on two successive days to absorb the immensity of Nishikant Kamat’s treatise that – and I quote from the film’s stunning climax—corruption is not part of our political system, our political system exists for corruption.
There. It’s out in the open. The terrible, frightening truism that has manoeuvered apna mahaan Bharat into a mahaan mess. With brilliant impunity, Madaari builds a case for self-justice when all systems collapse and you’ve nowhere to go but to your conscience...

Subhash K Jha turns the focus on Naseeruddin Shah’s directorial debut, 2006’s Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota in another feature in his This Day That Year series.
Naseeruddin Shah’s only directorial Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota which completed ninteen years on July 21, was a sensitive film that climaxed at the Twin Towers. It was such a nightmarish experience for Naseer he swore never to direct again.
In an interview with this writer on the eve of the film’s release, Naseer answered questions on why he chose direction so late in his life. “For the simple reason that it didn’t seem right earlier on. I remember myself as a typical kid with dreams of directing a film starring myself. I had some ideas at 19, which I’d still like to direct. But I never wanted to become a filmmaker earlier. In an edition of This Day That Year: Subhash K Jha, looks at Irrfan Khan’s worst film, The Killer, which also starred Emrran Hashmi, that released in 2009.
Hollywood remakes are at best of times only an occasion for the adapted version to be ridiculed. This one just about escapes ridicule by the scruff of the neck. If you haven’t seen Michael Mann’s Collateral you wouldn’t know that nearly every moment in co-directors Raksha Mistry, Hasnain Hyderabadwala The Killer is inspired by the original. And what isn’t derived isn’t worth the script’s while.
Thankfully, the two unlikely partners in the confused collaboration between a callow cabbie and his criminal passenger are played by actors who seem oblivious of what Jamie Fox and Tom Cruise did in the original.

Freida Pinto is set for a major role in Netflix’s upcoming series adaptation of the Jhumpa Lahiri short story collection “Unaccustomed Earth.”
Variety has learned that Pinto will play Parul Chaudhury in the series, which was originally announced in April. As previously reported, Netflix has commissioned eight episodes.
The official logline for the show states that it is “an epic, soapy, and culturally vibrant drama about a tight-knit Indian American community navigating love, desire, and belonging. Rich with nuance, passion, and unforgettable characters, ‘Unaccustomed Earth’ invites you into the elite and insular Indian-American community of Cambridge, Ma. When a star-crossed romance between a devoted wife and her long lost love comes to light, a scandalous affair is born and new battle lines are drawn in this intensely interconnected immigrant community.”
Pinto is perhaps best known for her breakout role in the Oscar-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire,” which marked her feature debut.

When I think of Pran Saab his whole career appears to be unique and unmatched,” the great Irrfan Khan once said to me.
Now when I think back on the mighty Pran Krishan Sikand’s astonishing career I am astounded at his versatility. After making his debut as a leading man Pran ruled the box-office as a villain for a good 45 years. During the 1960s and 70s you won’t come across any newly born child named Pran: the name was synonymous with villainy and evil. In 1967, the visionary filmmaker-actor Manoj Kumar cast Pran in a sympathetic role as Malang Chachcha in Upkar.
After being hated for decades Pran was immediately accepted as good man. He later played the good Samaritan in Adhikar(1971), Zanjeer(1973) and numerous other films while continuing to be the badman.
Shatrughan Sinha who also made that tricky switch-over from villain to hero remembers cancelling his trip...

An Indian actress par excellence, Konkona Sen Sharma, needs no introduction today. She is not a quintessential Indian ‘heroine’; rather, she is a stellar ‘sustained’ actress who can be identified for her groundbreaking filmography and her prolific range of acting. Her performance is defined by her nuanced manner of presence, her piercing gaze, and exemplary portrayal of her characters.
She was ‘discovered’ by the Indian film industry a little after she got into Bengali films. Primarily making appearances in arthouse independent films, Konkona is a well-established name in contemporary parallel cinema. Besides, the uninhibited selection of her films, rife with fierce themes and social issues, has earned her enough laurels in the commercial Indian film industry as well.
Daughter of the filmmaker-actress Aparna Sen, Konkona is the recipient of two National Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards. Other than a singular child debut in the film Indira (1983), Konkona Sen Sharma...

Anurag Basu’s Metro…In Dino has finally made its way to theaters, and it’s already winning hearts with its fresh storytelling, light-hearted humor, and that perfect mix of emotion and music. As the film continues to enchant audiences, Basu took a moment to share some fun behind-the-scenes stories—including how he managed to get filmmaker Imtiaz Ali to make a brief yet heartwarming cameo.
When asked how he convinced someone like Imtiaz, who’s known for being a bit camera-shy, Basu chuckled, “I didn’t have to do much. I just asked his daughter Ida to talk him into it. And guess what? She did! Imtiaz usually steers clear of the spotlight, but he made an exception this time. He really nailed it, too.”
The director himself also makes an appearance in the film—another delightful surprise for fans. It turns out, it was a bit of playful banter with music maestro Pritam.

Manoj Bajpayee is one of the finest actors of our generation. His foothold in Hindi cinema has spanned both the commercial and the independent. The most striking feature of his varied filmography is how well he consolidates the nuance in his body language even when the films he acts in are unquestionably mediocre. His voice modulation and distinctive style of delivering dialogues ensure that we remember the name of the character that he played.
Recently, he mesmerized with his astute blend of a middle-class man’s mediocrity and the dark humour of a Raw agent in The Family Man, Raj and Dk’s superb show in which he owned every frame with his masterful consistency.

Abbas Tyrewala’s directorial debut has a certain sparkling spirit , a zest for living life quirk-sized and a certain zing thing about the way the characters look at life and love.
It’s not only about the way the characters’ exuberant yearnings connect with the audience. It’s also about the casual free-flowing downloading of events and dialogues in the narrative that give the characters an edge over other urbane youngsters who have come and gone in the past creating a spirit of lingering joie de vivre.

Danny Boyle is still “proud” of his Best Picture Oscar winner “Slumdog Millionaire,” even while acknowledging that, as a white British director, he could not make the Bollywood-influenced Mumbai epic today.
Boyle told The Guardian that his 2008 film, in hindsight, carries a weight of “cultural appropriation” despite working with “a big Indian crew.” Boyle also said “Slumdog Millionaire” would not get financed today with a director such as himself attached.
“We wouldn’t be able to make that now,” Boyle said. “And that’s how it should be. It’s time to reflect on all that. We have to look at the cultural baggage we carry and the mark that we’ve left on the world.”
He continued, “I mean, I’m proud of the film, but you wouldn’t even contemplate doing something like that today. It wouldn’t even get financed. Even if I was involved, I’d...

Subhash K Jha takes a look back at Madhur Bhandarkar’s Aan: Men At Work and we hear from Shatrughan Sinha about the joy of making the film.
Actually, there are many men at work–both on and off screen—in Aan: Men At Work. While the cop-heroes sweat it out in their humid halos, the men behind the scenes also make their presence felt in rapidfire motions in this emotionless pictureshow . No sobbing Matajis(thank God!) but loads of slithering and sliding Mata Haris.
There’s of course director Madhur Bhandarkar, in his first foray into frenzied action. Big guns with bigger nozzles attached to them—of both the human and the mechanical mind—strut around with such exaggerated machismo , it becomes hard to tell the bad and good guys apart. Bhandarkar treats his heroes and villains (all festooned to the plot with formulistic splendour) like characters in an extended videogame for juvenile grownups.

When Ben Affleck Reflected On Same-Sex Kiss Scene (Photo Credit – YouTube)
Ben Affleck is getting real about a scene stuck in his head since the late ’90s. It’s that same-sex kiss from Chasing Amy, and he’s finally opening up about the discomfort he felt during filming. Affleck admitted that his awkwardness back then wasn’t just nerves. It came from a place he now recognizes as internalized homophobia. And if given the chance, he says he’d absolutely do things differently.
The topic popped up again during the 20th anniversary screening of Chasing Amy at Outfest in Los Angeles. Director Kevin Smith recalled a moment from the set that aged like milk. “A man kissing another man is the greatest acting challenge an actor can ever face,” Ben Affleck reportedly said before and after the scene. He added, “Now, I’m a serious actor.” Safe to say, those words haven’t aged well.

Is Hera Pheri 3 Losing Its Charm Amidst All The Unnecessary Circus? (Photo Credit – YouTube)
If you are a fan of the Hera Pheri franchise, then you must remember how the second installment of the franchise ended up in a Circus! Well, ironically, part 3 started in spirit from the same place. Paresh Rawal’s ‘Utha Le Re Baba Move’!

It’s eight years since one of late Irrfan Khan’s most successful films Hindi Medium was released. Irrfan + Social Issue, bound to work. He was known to be a thinking actor with very definite views of politics and culture.
The trauma that parents face is alchemized in Hindi Medium into something smile-inducing and heartwarming, something quite magical in its ability to hit us where it hurts the most without damaging our sense of self-worth. Not that director Saket Choudhary trivializes the pain of parenting, as it crosses the hurdles of schooling protocol.
To his credit in Hindi Medium, director Saket Chowdhary does not allow proceedings to get preachy, screechy, or downright hysterical. Most issue-based films can’t help lecturing down on the audience. Saket eases you into the life of a terribly endearing couple—lovable with all their whims, excesses, and fancies, Armaan and Armanis – played by Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar.

Subhash K Jha revisits Tigmanshu Dhulia’s directorial debut, the crime drama Haasil, starring Jimmy Sheirgill, Hrishitaa Bhatt, Irrfan Khan and Ashutosh Rana, which released 22 years ago.
After years of honing his considerable talent on television, Tigmanshu Dhulia made his cinematic debut with an ominously real and yet stirringly cinematic exposition on student unrest in a small, dusty North Indian town where goons entered politics through the easy-access route of classroom elections.
This is a world of despair, darkness, debt, and finally death. To Dhulia’s credit, he doesn’t lose his grip over the grammar of street-level violence even while trying to carve a palatable love story amidst the incessant outpouring of sleazy crime and violence.
This thoroughly unorthodox and yet intimately penetrable study of youthful unrest begins with a college function. Even as the principal lectures the students and teachers, two gangs clash in the corridors.

Harshith Reddy who made his debut in Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s Subham , speaks to Subhash K Jha.
What was your first reaction when you were offered Subham?
When I was offered Subham, it was honestly a life-changing moment. I had been waiting for the right debut script for so long, and when I heard the concept of Subham, it just felt like everything had fallen into place. What makes it even more surreal is how random it was.
What do you mean?
Raj Nidimoru sir (Raj & Dk) spotted me at the airport, he recognised me from my first film Mail and called me ‘Mail abbayi’, Raj sir mentioned they were working on a script and had me in mind as an option. He said meeting at the airport was a sign that we should do this, and it just felt like fate. It was such a turning point in my life,...

In Shoojit Sircar’s Piku, Amitabh Bachchan played a very cranky patriarch who is obsessed with his bowel movements. The film, which was released in 2015, also starred Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan.
Speaking on the rotund Bengali bhadralok’s part, Mr Bachchan had said, “I have no known reference, neither was I given one. This is the writer’s and the director’s image of what the character should be. As an actor employed by the production, I follow what is professionally desired of me.”
This is the second film where Deepika Padukone played Mr Bachchan’s daughter. Mr Bachchan remarked, “As co-artists, we do develop or aim to develop the kind of relationship the script demands. In that sense, there is, and I would imagine should be, a so-called ‘bonding’ between us. In our profession, I would expect that whatever we do in the sphere of the film in question is special.

Your sophomore film Charas was not as well received as your first film Haasil. Was that a disappointment?
It was twenty-one years ago, my second film Charas got released. Expectations were high. But it did not come close to the kind of admiration my debut film Haasil received.
Was Charas a challenge to make?
I loved making it. Visually it is one of my best works because the canvas was enormous. I think it was ahead of its time. The plot was too thick and twisted many just did not get it. It happens when the filmmaker is trying too hard and feeling superior to his audience. My bad.

The book-to-screen adaptation is a tried and true formula that has led to some of the best movies of all time, like "Jurassic Park" and "The Wizard of Oz," which unknowingly paved the way for the success of "Wicked." However, not all adaptations receive the same praise. Movies like "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" and the messy adaptation of "The Dark Tower" have been criticized for glossing over too many details. This proves that not all books, no matter how easy they might seem to adapt were meant for the big screen.
While some books are destined for a cinematic future, others have been deemed unfilmable. Perhaps a plot relies too heavily on mystical beings, sometimes tales are controversial and unsettling, which could turn away moviegoers. It's a label that some filmmakers walk away from, while others...

Celebrating the career of the late Irrfan Khan, Subhash K Jha shares what the brilliant actor told him in an earlier interview about how he becomes his characters and reveals what was Irrfan’s most cherished dream role.
Irrfan Khan was was hoping to play Jawaharlal Nehru in Joe Wright’s Indian Summer, is undeterred by the fact that he looks nothing like India’s first prime minister and says he can pull off the role convincingly.
He told me, “I’ll turn myself into the character through my attitude. When I was just out of the Nsd (National School of Drama) I had played Lenin at the age of 21. It made me realise my potential and direction as an actor. Since Lenin, I’ve played other biographical characters. I’m playing another real-life character, Pan Singh Tomar. I’ll be playing the Punjabi poet Pash in Anurag Kashyap’s film.

“Haider” (2014) stands as Vishal Bhardwaj’s crowning achievement—a film that transcends its identity as a mere Shakespearean adaptation to become a searing political commentary, a visual poem, and a profound meditation on the human condition within a conflict zone. Released in 2014 as the culmination of Bhardwaj’s Shakespearean trilogy following “Maqbool” (Macbeth) and “Omkara” (Othello), “Haider” transplants the Danish tragedy of “Hamlet” to the war-torn valley of Kashmir during the turbulent 1990s.
What sets “Haider” apart from typical adaptations is the way Bhardwaj skillfully interlaces Hamlet’s existential crises with the intricate socio-political landscape of Kashmir. The movie serves as a lens through which audiences study issues of betrayal, vengeance, political repression, and fragmentation of identity amid collective trauma. With haunting imagery, subtle performances, and a bold screenplay, “Haider” poses uncomfortable questions regarding state power, insurgency, disappearances, and the cost of pursuing truth in a world shrouded in deceit.

Netflix is doubling down on adaptations of classic novels, with the streamer officially greenlighting series version of “The Age of Innocence” and “Unaccustomed Earth.”
“The Age of Innocence” was written by Edith Wharton and was originally published in 1920. The limited series at Netflix is described as a “passionate and heart-rending will-they/won’t-they love triangle exploring themes of freedom, duty, identity and love in all its forms. This fresh take is true to Wharton’s novel but will speak to a new generation as we traverse the ballrooms and bedrooms of these young people, asking the question what is love — and what is lust? And should we ultimately be driven by our heads or by our hearts?”
Emma Frost — known for her work on shows like “The Spanish Princess,” “The White Princess,” and “The White Queen” — will write all episodes and serve as executive producer and showrunner. Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping,...
