The future of Laid on Peacock has been in limbo since December 2024 when the Stephanie Hsu and Zosia Mamet series premiered on the streamer. Since then, viewers have been wondering whether a second season was in store for the comedy, and now we finally have that answer.
Laid has officially been cancelled at Peacock, meaning there won't be a season 2. An exact reason wasn't given, though Deadline reports that the show didn't make it into the Nielsen streaming rankings, so the viewership numbers more than likely played a role in the decision.
Despite the low viewership numbers, the comedy series does have a 93% score audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. I mean, that's only based on 28 views so I guess that further proves the low streaming numbers. No offense. But still. The majority of those users gave the show a high score on Rt. Though I think it's overrated, so I honestly saw this cancellation coming.

It's another heartbreaking day for lovers of television as Peacock has just killed off one of its most promising shows. Laid, a romantic-comedy drama starring Everything Everywhere All At Once star Stephanie Hsu, has been cancelled on the streamer after just one season. The series premiered with all eight episodes on Peacock on December 19. Laid was a hit with audiences and the critics as well, scoring a tidy 93% Rotten Tomatoes score, but the numbers weren't quite enough for the streamer. In addition to starring, Hsu also served as executive producer, as did the show's writers and co-showrunners, Sally Bradford McKenna and Nahnatchka Khan.
Peacock has not released an official statement explaining its decision; however, Deadline, which broke the news, reports that the series was unable to draw as much attention as other shows from the same creators. Also, its streaming numbers paled against expectations. Many fans would, however, argue that...

It's going to be a one-season run for Laid, the romantic comedy series on Peacock. Despite having a strong cast with nearly unanimous praise from critics, the show won't be getting another season on the NBCUniversal platform.
Per Deadline, Laid has officially been canceled by Peacock after one season. The show premiered on the streaming platform on Dec. 19 with all eight episodes made available to watch simultaneously. Its response was stellar, as the show holds a score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the show did not become a major streaming hit, as it didn't crack Nielsen's top 10 list, nor did it create substantial buzz on social media. It's not yet known if the show will be shopped around to other streaming platforms for a potential rescue.

Another day, another under-appreciated comedy gem gets tossed to the wayside by its streaming home. That's right, the Stephanie Hsu-starring (and executive-produced!) comedy series, Laid, has been canceled after a single season on Peacock. The show was a hit with critics (including our own Greg Archer) and fans who tuned in — gaining it a 93% on the Tomatometer, which seems a big low, all things considered. Unfortunately, praise was not enough to convince Peacock to give the series another season, which is a shame for anyone who watched the show.
The news, which was first reported by Deadline, comes at a time when fewer and fewer comedy series are getting the green light. Laid followed Hsu's Ruby Yao as she —over the course of the series' 8 episodes — realized that all of her former lovers were dying in unusual ways, forcing her to confront her past (and subsequent sex partners) in order to move forward.

The series starred Stephanie Hsu as Ruby Yao, a woman who learns that her former sexual partners have begun dying off in the order in which she slept with them. With the help of her best friend and roommate Aj (Zosia Mamet), she works to figure out what’s causing the deaths and works to warn the ones who are still living.
Along with Hsu and Mamet, the cast included Zosia Mamet, Michael Angarano and Tommy Martinez as series regulars, plus recurring and guest stars including Andre Hyland, Elizabeth Bowen, Olivia Holt, Ryan Pinkston, David Denman, Susan Berger, Kate Berlant, John Early, Ettore “Big E” Ewen, Chloe Fineman, Simu Liu, Finneas O’Connell and Alexandra Shipp.

It seems that Laid is as dead as one of Ruby’s ex-lovers: Peacock has cancelled the twisted romantic comedy starring Stephanie Hsu after one season, our sister site Deadline reports.

Exclusive: Peacock will not be moving forward with new installments of the freshman series Laid, sources reveal to Deadline.
Laid, starring and executive produced by Stephanie Hsu, premiered on December 19 with all 8 episodes available to stream. While Laid boasted a talented ensemble cast, a catchy title, and a must-stream playlist, the rom-com failed to make the Nielsen streaming rankings, nor did it generate as much buzz as other projects from co-showrunners, executive producers, and writers Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna. It is as yet unknown if the show will be shopped around.

Wrestlemania season is the most wonderful time of the year for wrestling fans, particularly the ones who follow WWE. Spanning from New Year's Eve to around Easter Sunday, World Wrestling Entertainment will culminate their biggest storylines of the year and pay them off on The Grandest Stage of Them All. Though many will look at the Showcase of Immortals as the "season finale" of the long-running wrestling promotion's programming for that year, professional wrestling doesn't have an off-season. In fact, depending on which streaming services you subscribe to, you can find yourself watching in-ring action from a different promotion every single day of the week.
However, what if wrestling fans want to take a break from the squared circle in favor of more traditional shows? Obviously, there is a plethora of shows and genres to choose from, but maybe they don't want to stray too far from the world of "The Man" Becky Lynch,...

Over the last few years, we’ve seen an uptick in holiday-centered horror fare. With movies like Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving and Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3 putting the fear back in festive, the subgenre is staged for a major comeback. Earlier this year, filmmaker Josh Ruben (Werewolves Within) blended slasher with rom-com when he unveiled his Valentine’s Day-themed feature, Heart Eyes. Now, three months since the film terrorized audiences in cinemas, it’s set to slice and dice its way onto streaming. Those looking to snuggle into a scarefest with their sweetie can switch on Netflix beginning May 8 when the Olivia Holt (Totally Killer) and Mason Gooding (Scream)-led film hits the platform.
The idea behind Ruben’s latest project is an intriguing one. From a screenplay co-penned by Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy comes a story about a crazed serial killer who stalks couples on Valentine’s Day.

Finneas just released a new collaboration with country superstar Kacey Musgraves, with the duo performing an acoustic duet of Musgraves’ “Giver / Taker” for a special EP on Apple Music.
The streaming platform dropped Finneas’s Apple Music Nashville Sessions EP on Monday, featuring live performances of “Starfucker” and “Same Old Story” from his 2024 album For Cryin’ Out Loud, as well as the duet with Musgraves. Apple Music also shared a video of the two artists performing the song — which originally appeared on Musgraves’ sixth album Deeper Well — available in full below.
The track starts with Musgraves on the first verse, Finneas taking the second verse, and the two harmonizing on the chorus. Musgraves’ vocals are beautiful, as usual, while the song also showcases Finneas’s range as he switches between higher harmonies on the chorus and a deeper delivery on his solo verse. It's one of the biggest debates in TV right now: What’s a comedy?
While the argument rages on, there were plenty of laughs when a trio of comedy showrunners — St. Denis Medical’s Eric Ledgin, Laid’s Nahnatchka Khan, and The Four Seasons’ Lang Fisher — took the stage at SXSW’s Film and TV Music Festival for a panel titled “Funny Af Comedy Showrunners,” moderated by Gold Derby’s editor-in-chief.
“If the show is making you laugh, I guess it’s a comedy,” says Ledgin. “I don’t know that the categorization matters to me. I thought Succession was one of the funniest shows on television.”
Khan agrees that dramas can offer plenty of laughs. “Sopranos was very funny, too,” she says. “The best comedy has a lot of drama. But I do appreciate actual jokes.”
Agrees Fisher, “I wish there were more super funny, really silly shows,” she says.

Olivia Holt’s debut atop a major studio call sheet is going exceptionally well.
The multitalented star of Heart Eyes couldn’t be prouder of director Josh Ruben’s slasher romcom, as it’s one of the most well-reviewed films of the young year. Holt’s lead role is a logical next step given her recent scene-stealing performance in Nahnatchka Khan’s time-travel slasher comedy, Totally Killer (2023). In fact, Heart Eyes producer Greg Gilreath also produced the former, so he recommended Holt to Ruben during the casting process. Similarly, Radio Silence, the filmmaking collective behind Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023), put in a good word for their former Scream actor Mason Gooding, and the strength of both endorsements sent Holt and Gooding straight to Heart Eyes’ New Zealand-based set, bypassing a chemistry read between the two romantic leads.

The shocking cliffhanger ending of Peacock's Laid touches on major questions, like why Ruby's exes are dying, while setting up an exciting second season. The dark comedy starts with Stephanie Hsu's Ruby Yao discovering that Brandon, her ex-boyfriend from college, has died. After going to the funeral, she leaves with Jeffrey, her other ex-boyfriend and Brandon's best friend. After a fight, Jeffrey gets out of the Uber and is immediately hit by a car.
While this could be one big coincidence, Ruby and her true crime-obsessed best friend Aj quickly discover that all her previous sexual partners are dying in the order that she slept with them. The two set out to discover the cause, warn Ruby's exes, and prevent as many deaths as possible. At the same time, Ruby tries to figure out her place in a love triangle with her ex who won't die and her idyllic client.

“Laid” follows Stephanie Hsu’s Ruby as she comes to the grim realization that a growing number of her ex-partners have become victim to various maladies — all of which have resulted in death.
But instead of sex-shaming, co-showrunners Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna (“Son of Zorn”) used the outlandish premise — which originated from an Australian format — as an opportunity for Ruby to reflect on her behavior during each relationship, serving as a jumping off point for some internal growth.
“From the beginning, we, the writers, Peacock and Stephanie, wanted this to be sex positive, not at all shaming, not at all judgmental,” Bradford McKenna told TheWrap. “In having to go back and look at all these guys and girls, it’s not so much, ‘Who were they and what happened?’ but ‘Who was I when I was with them?'”

Stephanie Hsu is a woman whose romantic troubles turn deadly, and Zosia Mamet is her best friend trying to help, in Laid. While having acted since the early 2010s, Hsu has skyrocketed to fame over the past few years since her Oscar-nominated performance in A24's Everything Everywhere All at Once, following it up with everything from the action-comedy The Fall Guy to the ensemble buddy comedy Joy Ride. Mamet first found her breakout success with a leading role in HBO's Girls as Shoshanna, having since starred in everything from Under the Silver Lake to Netflix's The Decameron.
Hsu leads the Laid cast as Ruby, a party planner in her early 30s who has bounced from partner to partner without any success, only to subsequently find that all of her former sex partners are bizarrely dying in the order she slept with them. Mamet stars in the show as Aj,...

The team behind Laid couldn’t be happier to have included Amanda Knox in the Peacock comedy series.
Adapted from the Australian project of the same name, the show centers on Ruby (Stephanie Hsu), who realizes that her previous lovers are dying and sets out to understand why this is happening. Zosia Mamet co-stars as Ruby’s best friend Aj, while other castmembers include Michael Angarano and Tommy Martinez.
One surprising member of the cast is Knox, who makes an appearance in the final episode of the first season that is currently streaming. Knox became a public figure after she was convicted and then ultimately acquitted of the 2007 murder of her roommate in Italy. Co-showrunner Sally Bradford McKenna describes herself to The Hollywood Reporter as a big true-crime fan who saw Knox as the right fit for a role, given the series’ story.
“I’m obsessed with her,” Bradford McKenna says of Knox.

The co-creators of Laid explain why the cameos from familiar faces like Barbie actors and Marvel stars are more than just mere cameos. Developed by Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna, and based on the Australian series of the same name, Laid debuted on Peacock in December. It stars Stephanie Hsu, known for her Oscar-nominated performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, as Ruby. Once all of her former sex partners start dying off, often in strange ways, Ruby and her roommate Aj (Zosia Mamet) try to solve the mystery of what's going on.
In an interview with Screen Rant's Grant Hermanns, Khan and McKenna talk about why some of the guest appearances from the likes of Shang-Chi and Barbie star Simu Liu are more than just cameos. In the quotes below, McKenna talks about how the eight-episode series approached Ruby's sex timeline and was able to bring notable actors through that process.

American audiences have not always appreciated the attempts to remake Australian comedies, but a new show featuring the Academy Award-nominated star of Everything Everywhere All at Once is currently wowing critics and viewers alike. While Australian-produced children’s entertainment icons like The Wiggles and Bluey have enjoyed considerable success in the US market, attempts to remake some of the nation’s more popular television comedies have often fallen short of expectations.
In 2008, NBC had previously attempted to remake one of Australia’s best-known sitcoms, Kath & Kim, a satirical look at an off-beat mother and daughter duo from suburbia. Starring SNL veteran Molly Shannon and Selma Blair as the remake's titular characters, the US version of Kath & Kim was lambasted by critics, with some even quipping that the show was bad enough to justify the cessation of trade relations with the country. Moreover, despite originally being picked up for a full 22-episode season,...

If you’re looking to get Laid this weekend, Peacock’s newest series has you covered.
Adapted from an Australian series by Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna, who previously collaborated on the far too short-lived Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23, the acerbic romantic comedy stars Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu as Ruby, a narcissistic event planner in her early 30s desperately seeking a real connection when she learns that her former lovers have all begun dying in unusual ways. This strange but shocking revelation quickly leads Ruby and her true crime-loving best friend Aj (a scene-stealing Zosia Mamet) down a twisty path as they attempt to figure out what’s going on, one that may or may not also lead Ruby on a journey of self-discovery. A quick and highly bingeable eight episodes, Laid is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains major spoilers from Season 1 of “Laid,” now streaming on Peacock.
Are your former lovers dying in increasingly mysterious and confounding ways?
For Ruby (Stephanie Hsu), the lead character on the new Peacock dark comedy “Laid,” life becomes messy when her exes start dying, one-by-one. Sometimes she witnesses it in the background of a news broadcast, or sometimes it’s right in front of her own eyes. And to make matters more confusing, they start dying in the exact order she slept with them.
It’s a concept that Hsu herself describes as “redonculous,” even though it’s based on a hit Australian show that ran for two seasons.
Co-showrunners and executive producers Nahnatchka Khan (“Fresh Off the Boat”) and Sally Bradford McKenna (“Will & Grace”) say they saw the potential to take the premise of the Australian version in different directions. Khan says she liked...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains light spoilers for Laid on Peacock.
Peacock’s Laid, from executive producers and co-showrunners Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna, presents quite a messy premise.
Stephanie Hsu’s main character Ruby, a professional party coordinator, discovers with the help of her best friend Aj (Zosia Mamet) that all the people she has ever had sex with are dying — in the order that she slept with them. Aj helps Ruby set out on a quest to warn all her past partners of this mysterious phenomenon, which Ruby does not want to keep happening, and in the process, the two friends discover more about themselves. Add innocent and sensitive Isaac (Tommy Martinez) and Ruby’s rough-around-the-edges ex-boyfriend Richie (Michael Angarano) to the mix, and comedic chaos ensues.

Writer and director Nahnatchka Khan, who is best known for sitcoms “Fresh Off the Boat,” “Don’t Trust the B—- In Apartment 23,” and NBC’s “Young Rock” with Dwayne Johnson, is celebrating the launch of her latest laugh, the Stephanie Hsu-led murder comedy “Laid” on Peacock, Thursday with the reveal of her next projects: two more dark comedies, one starring Tony Hale and the other based on the LGBTQ graphic novel “Fuck This Place.”
Titled “Boy Next Door,” the in-the-works TV series is inspired by John Hinckley Jr’s release from prison into his misguided and controlling mother’s house, this dark comedy follows a man who made a huge mistake a long time ago and now just wants to live a normal, unremarkable second half of his life: get a regular job, meet a regular girl, learn how to take a selfie.

Executive producers and writers Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna may have another hit on their hands with the launch of their Stephanie Hsu-led dark comedy Laid, which premieres on Peacock December 19. But the creative duo’s bond stems back to the fabulous and cancelled-too-soon 2012 ABC comedy Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, which starred Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Dreama Walker (Doubt), and James Van Der Beek as, well, himself (sort of).
In a recent interview with MovieWeb, the duo admitted that Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 was ahead of its time. “It's still my favorite show that I've ever been on staff for,” said Bradford McKenna, who was one of the producers of the show created by Khan. And that's saying something, considering she has worked on the popular shows The Goldbergs, The Grinder, and Will & Grace. “I do think it was [ahead of its time]… we felt it at the time,...

Ruby Yao (Stephanie Hsu), the protagonist of the Peacock comedy “Laid,” is variously described as “selfish,” “a nightmare,” “the worst person I have ever met” and belonging “in jail.” Hsu’s performance and Ruby’s characterization as a whole are indeed intensely off-putting, in ways both intentional and not. But Ruby’s karmic comeuppance in this series, adapted by sitcom veterans Nahnatchka Khan (“Fresh off the Boat”) and Sally Bradford McKenna (“The Goldbergs”) from an Australian show of the same name, doesn’t affect her directly. Instead, everyone she’s ever slept with starts to die — often in outlandish ways, always in the order she had sex with them.
This morbid premise evokes the late, great “Lovesick.” But unlike that British series, in which the hero’s Sti leads him to revisit past relationships, the heightened stakes of “Laid” present a tonal hurdle the eight-episode season proves unable to surmount.

The press materials for Peacock’s “Laid” call it “a f*cked up rom-com where the answer to, ‘Why can’t I find love, is there something wrong with me?’ is a resounding ‘Yes. There is. The problem is definitely you.'”
That dramatic irony hovers over the series, which has plenty of entertaining kernels — mysterious deaths, female friendship, and something called a “blowjob overlay” — but spends a lot of time on the uncomfortable reality of a person who is the problem and refuses to do the requisite work to get better.
“Laid” comes from co-showrunners Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna, based on the Australian series from Marieke Hardy and Kirsty Fisher. For viewers who tune into the new Peacock series “Laid” this weekend, don’t be surprised if you spot a familiar public figure.
Amanda Knox, the American exchange student who was convicted in Italy of murdering her roommate — before being ultimately acquitted by that country’s highest court in 2015 — makes a surprise appearance in “Laid,” as viewers will see late in the season.
In “Laid,” Aj (Zosia Mamet) is a true crime fanatic who helps her best friend, Ruby (Stephanie Hsu), figure out why all of her ex’s are dying in the exact pattern she slept with them. Aj is obsessed with Knox throughout the show and, by the end, the real-life Knox makes a cameo appearance.

Laid is a narrative that daringly balances romantic humor and existential dread in a universe where love and death are intertwined. At its core, the series revolves around Ruby Yao, a party designer in Seattle whose romantic relationships take a darkly comic turn when her ex-lovers begin to die one by one, in the exact order of their intimacy.
This macabre surprise serves as a plot device and a poignant statement on the transient nature of human connections and the looming specter of consequences that follow our transitory desires. Adapted from an Australian series, Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna welcome us into a realm where romantic goals collide with the heavy gravity of mortality, compelling viewers to reflect on the ramifications of Ruby’s wild abandon.
Set in Seattle, a city known for its romance and solitude, the series captures a sense of desire that pervades its lively yet sad streets.

When “Hacks” won the Emmy earlier this year for outstanding comedy, it shocked pundits who had expected another victory for “The Bear.” Even the “Hacks” producers were gobsmacked, jaws agape as they reached the stage. But for the execs at Universal Television, which produces “Hacks” for Max, that stunning moment came with a little vindication.
“‘Gratifying’ is an understatement,” says Universal TV president Erin Underhill. “It was huge. For me personally, it was a career highlight. This was not a show buyers were looking for. Everyone passed on it.”
The “Hacks” win was not only a shot in the arm for the comedy genre — which is experiencing a bit of a renaissance this fall — but also another notch in the belt for Universal’s comedy division, which is also seeing an uptick in its output.

The American education system has a rather regrettable take on sex-ed: “If you have sex you will die.” The trope has been mined for comedy before, but few shows take the premise as seriously as Laid. The romantic comedy series starring Stephanie Hsu lands on Peacock this week with its darkly funny premise. Hsu gets another nuanced and exciting role to continue her ascent. Meanwhile, co-star Zosia Mamet delivers her funniest performance since Girls. Together, they lift the comedy series thanks to their chemistry and zany performances.

It wasn't great to be a Millennial at the top of the 2010s. Not that other folks were having a ball, but by then people of that generation had spent a solid decade growing rapidly disillusioned with the state of the world upon coming of adult age. They and millions of others had also barely gone through the worst economic recession in the lifetimes of practically anyone still alive today. Plus, on top of somehow being both broke and utterly reckless spenders (or so the "Millennials are killing [Insert Name of Industry]" think-piece cottage industry at the time would have you believe), most of them were still in their early to mid-20s, which is a trying age for anyone who's ever lived.

The writers behind some of this year’s hottest comedy series took on Variety’s A Night in the Writers Room: Awards Season Edition to discuss the landscape of laughter on TV.
The panel, moderated by Variety‘s Michael Schneider, kicked off with a debate about whether there is an easily defined line between comedy and drama. Nick Bakay, co-creator of Max’s “Bookie” starring Sebastian Maniscalco, said he “totally disagrees” with the notion that there is no clear separation between the two genres.
“There’s absolutely a line between comedy and drama. And drama should not enter into comedy, and it has. There’s a lot of shows that are just not particularly funny and they’re getting…” he said, trailing off before naming names.
Later in the conversation, Bakay called out the legal dramedy “Ally McBeal,” which won the Emmy for best comedy in 1999.
“There are no jokes in this!

Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu has to deal with the fact that her exes keep dying in the trailer for Laid. Set to debut on Peacock in just a matter of weeks, the comedy series was first announced in January of this year. "You can't like someone right now because you could kill them." Peacock has unveiled the full official trailer for a sex comedy series called Laid, created by Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna. The funny teaser debuted just last month. It's based on the Australian series of the same name (from 2011) and is streaming on Peacock in the US this December. A woman finds out her former lovers are dying in unusual ways and must go through her sex timeline to confront her complicated past in order to move forward. That sounds awkward & amusing! "The premise of Laid — a woman discovers all of her exes are dying in mysterious ways — [was] exactly what we were looking for: a F–ed-up rom-com." Laid stars Stephanie Hsu as Ruby and Zosia Mamet as her best friend Aj. The main cast also includes Michael Angarano and Tommy Martinez, and exciting guest stars like Finneas O'Connell,...
