Fans saw Ncuti Gatwa's shocking departure, with the Doctor regenerating into Billie Piper, confirming a longstanding leak. Doctor Who will leave HBO Max on July 31.

When Doctor Who came back in 2005 with Russell T Davies at the helm, no-one was sure if it would be a success. It had veteran actor Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor and the highly likeable Billie Piper as his companion Rose, but it still had to contend with years of being the butt of jokes.
And yet it succeeded - and then some. Now the show is several Doctors down the line, and when Ncuti Gatwa came on board as the Fifteenth Doctor the show soft rebooted, calling his first season Season 1. But the powers that be still remember the 2005 reboot as the one that changed everything, and now the BBC have commissioned a special episode of the behind-the-scenes aftershow Doctor Who: Unleashed, one celebrating everything the show has achieved since it came crashing back onto screens in 2005. Episode 5 of Doctor Who Season 2 brought the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu) back to Earth. This time, they land in Lagos, Nigeria, as the Doctor discovers that his favorite barbershop got caught in a celestial revenge plot. But despite the episode's sci-fi elements, it also showcased Nigerian culture, which Ariyon Bakare praised following his Doctor Who debut.
Bakare played the mysterious barber in the latest episode, "The Story and the Engine." In a recent interview with Radio Times, he praised the amount of Nigerian culture that the latest episode presented and how this type of presentation was a first for the series.
"And these are the stories that are unusual. We don't see Doctor Who like this. I've not seen one that's done in such a way - with so much culture in it, and yet, the culture is not so far away, which we're always scared of.

National Geographic’s Titanic: The Digital Resurrection makes the Titanic wreck accessible without needing to dive to its final resting place. The documentary, which provides a groundbreaking look at the ship’s wreckage and the debris field, will air on April 11, 2025 at 9pm Et/Pt on NatGeo.
The documentary uses the digital restoration to examine the ship’s boiler room and verifies reports that 35 men remained at their posts long after the impact. Due to the details uncovered in digital scans, the documentary shows evidence that supports the claim by Second Officer Charles Lightoller that First Officer Murdoch was attempting to launch lifeboats right up until the moment the ship was engulfed with water.
National Geographic released the following description of the documentary that features the first “full-scale, 1:1 digital twin” of the shipwreck:

Former Doctor Who star Freema Agyeman has revealed why a return for her character Martha Jones was scrapped. Martha was the Tenth Doctor's main companion in Doctor Who's third season, where she traveled the world amassing forces to help free humanity from The Master's enslavement.
Martha was then brought back as part of an all-star team of former Doctor Who companions in season four's two part finale, where Ten (David Tennant) and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) called all of their friends together to fight off a Dalek invasion of earth. These episodes saw Martha seemingly being recruited by Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) to join his black-ops team, though full-time appearances in the Torchwood spinoff series never materialized.

When people love something, they often can't get enough of it — that's what leads to fanart, fanfiction, cosplaying, and the like. For Doctor Who fans, many of their favorite characters have had the opportunity for their stories to continue in the form of audio dramas. Big Finish Productions, founded in 1996, primarily produces audiobooks and audio plays, and one IP that they produce is Doctor Who. Collider's Maggie Lovitt recently moderated a panel at MegaCon in Orlando, Florida featuring actors who have all played companions in Doctor Who. Alex Kingston, who played River Song, Freema Agyeman, who played Martha Jones, Billie Piper, who played Rose Tyler, Arthur Darvill, who played Rory Williams, Jenna Coleman, who played Clara Oswald, and Mandip Gill, who played Yasmin Khan, were all in attendance. Lovitt asked, for those that have done audio dramas (everyone except Coleman), what was it like to continue their character's stories?...

The final episode of Jodie Whittaker's run as the Thirteenth Doctor on Doctor Who featured several cameos from across time and space. "Power of the Doctor" celebrated many milestones for the BBC. Not only was it marking the 100th Anniversary of the BBC, but it was also the 300th televised Doctor Who story. To honor all of that, Chris Chibnall, showrunner at the time, pulled out the big guns, gathering together past companions, as the current ones, Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill) and Dan Lewis (John Bishop) said their goodbyes. A companion support group was featured in the episode, bringing together past companions of the Doctor, all the way back to William Hartnell's tenure.

Warning: spoilers ahead for Doctor Who's "Joy to the World."
Ruby Sunday's brief return to Doctor Who gives an idea of what the future has in store for Millie Gibson's character. Debuting in 2023's Christmas special, "The Church on Ruby Road," Ruby Sunday served as the sole companion opposite Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor throughout Doctor Who season 14. Given how much mystery was woven around the identity of Ruby Sunday's mother, Doctor Who looked deeply invested in its new companion, but surprise reports later claimed Gibson would be replaced by Varada Sethu for Doctor Who season 15.
Sure enough, Doctor Who season 14 ended with Ruby exiting the Tardis after reuniting with her long-lost mother. 2024's Christmas special, "Joy to the World," finds the Fifteenth Doctor operating alone, solemnly preoccupied with thoughts of Ruby - making two drinks instead of one, staring longingly at the telephone, etc. - throughout the episode.

She was the first American actress to marry a prince, the first actress to dance with both Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, one of the first pin-up girls of the 1940s and the first celebrity to bring awareness to Alzheimer’s Disease. She was the “Love Goddess,” Rita Hayworth.
Hayworth was born on October 17, 1918, in Brooklyn as Margarita Carmen Cansino, into a family of Spanish dancers. Although she later claimed she didn’t care for it, Hayworth started dancing at a young age to please her father. They performed together as the Dancing Cansinos from the time she was 12-years-old. She began landing small film roles in her teens under the name Rita Cansino, eventually earning a contract with Columbia Pictures. There she was “Americanized” by changing her last name to her Irish mother’s maiden name of Hayworth, dying her dark hair red and having electrolysis to raise her hairline.

It’s been almost been 20 years since Doctor Who was revived for a new audience, and the show has brought us lots of Christmas and New Years specials since then. Although Christopher Eccleston rang in this new era with his Ningth Doctor in 2005, David Tennant's Tenth Doctor was the first to star in a holiday special.
We're going to rank every holiday special of the New Who era, including the New Years specials produced during Jodie Whittaker's run as the Thirteenth Doctor. Let's begin!

While “Resolution” is certainly a visually impressive episode, it's dragged down by a lack of urgency and imagination. This is the first time we see Thirteen meet Daleks.

Jodie Whittaker, otherwise known as the first female lead in the storied history of the decades-long show, Doctor Who, has been reflecting on the contentious finale of her iteration of the iconic character. As the Thirteenth Doctor, her tenure was glorious, with the acclaimed actor carrying the role with a light-hearted passion for adventure and building new things, as well as valuing friendship over anything else. Speaking of friendships, Whittaker is protective about some of the seasons most climactic moments, in particular the relationship between the Doctor and her companion, Yaz.

Although the final episode aired two years ago, Jodie Whittaker still harbors strong feelings about the ending of her Doctor Who season, where she played the Thirteenth Doctor. Whittaker, along with her costar Mandip Gill, reflect on their last scenes together, with the former stating she feels protective over them.
RadioTimes conversed with both Gill and Whittaker about their sentiments towards the episode of The Power of the Doctor. The preceding episode included a scene where Gills character, Yasmin Khan, confesses her feelings for the Doctor. However, they did not engage in any romance. Gill states, I don't think of it as another version. That is the version. That's where we left it. That's how it happened. Whittaker chimes in to agree: Im quite protective over it. It was a really beautiful thing, particularly the scenes in the Tardis - they were really wonderful to shoot, because that was our last day.

Doctor Who's new series has explored a few romantic partnerships between the Doctor and their companion. Although the most notable may be the Tenth Doctor and Rose, the Thirteenth Doctor, and Yaz's love story is a firm fan favorite. Big Finish recently announced that Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill will reprise their roles as the Doctor and Yasmin Khan for a 12-part audio series, beginning in July 2025. As a result, fans are eagerly sharing their favorite Thirteenth Doctor and Yaz scenes from Doctor Who.
This strong Doctor and companion pairing developed an extremely close bond across their many adventures. Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill's chemistry is evident in these Doctor Who moments, thanks in part to the actors' offscreen friendship. These Doctor Who sequences showcase exactly why fans became invested in the romance between the pair, with some of the scenes excelling further at depicting their intimate connection than others.

The end of the Thirteenth Doctors era in Doctor Who came with mixed fan reaction, whether it was how the ultimate face off with the Master (Sacha Dhawan) or how each companion said their goodbyes, or what ultimately led to Jodie Whittakers Doctor regenerating (in a final plot twist) into David Tennants Fourteenth Doctor. The fan reaction included disappointment at what seemed to be the end of the story for the Thirteenth Doctor and Yasmin Khan aka Yaz (Mandip Gill). Fans had speculated about a romance between Yasmin and the Doctor (ship name: Thasmin), but it never materialized, even after a confession from Yaz.

Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill, the Thirteenth Doctor and companion Yaz, reunited for a celebratory event. The pairing between the Doctor and Yaz, known as "Thasmin," had a significant impact on viewers and represented LGBTQ+ representation. Yaz's relationship with the Doctor helped her grow and gain confidence in her identity, despite the romantic potential not fully developing on screen.
Thirteenth Doctor star Jodie Whittaker reunites with her constant Doctor Who companion actor Mandip Gill in a new interview and photoshoot during a recent RadioTimes celebratory event. Breaking new ground for the series as the first female incarnation of the Time Lord in the main series, Whittaker made her debut in the closing moments of 2017's "Twice Upon A Time", leading the series for 5 years until 2022's "The Power of the Doctor". Gill's companion Yaz debuted in season 11's "The Woman Who Fell To Earth", and remained with Whittaker's Doctor throughout her tenure.

Ruby Sunday in Doctor Who resembles Moffat-era companions by being mysterious from the off - more like Amy and Clara than Rose, Martha, and Donna. She is a mysterious character with questions about her birth parents and a potential connection to another Time Lord. Unlike previous mystery companions, Ruby's relationship with the Doctor is portrayed as platonic, avoiding unnecessary romance.
Ruby Sunday is the first Doctor Who companion to debut since Russell T Davies returned as showrunner, but Millie Gibson's character actually has more in common with the companions from Steven Moffat's era. Classic Doctor Who companions were infamously two-dimensional, only required to scream, run, and ask questions - not necessarily in that order. Since 2005, Doctor Who has endeavored to flesh out its companions into proper characters, with everyone from Rose Tyler to Yasmin Khan getting more characterization, backstory, and development during their time in the Tardis.

As Magic: The Gathering got more amibitious with its crossover potential, a few potential partners began to be discussed among players. One that seemed to almost always pop up in "dream" scenario conversations was Doctor Who, which just a few years ago would have been an impossibility because of its sci-fi status alone. Now, with Universes Beyond and an increasing amount of properties joining the extended Mtg family, we're on the cusp of one of the biggest crossover events yet, with Doctor Who characters set to become tabletop fixtures on October 13, 2023.

Doctor Who might be diving headfirst into a new era this November, but no one has forgotten Jodie Whittaker's time as the Doctor, specifically her unrealized love story with her companion, Mandip Gill's Yasmin Khan -- former showrunner Chris Chibnall has just given his reasons behind leaving their romantic relationship somewhat unfinished on the show.
Whittaker spent five years in the titular role and had a variety of companions across her seasons, but Gill was there from the beginning until the very end. Chibnall, who was at the Doctor Who wheel at the time, attempted to show a rather tragic same-sex relationship between the Doctor and her companion, but it never truly came to fruition or culminated in something more than cryptic conversations and awkward hugs. The show's fanbase, specifically the LGBTQ+ part of the fandom, hoped to see the Doctor and Yaz kiss on-screen before they parted their ways,...

The most reason run of Doctor Who is marked with Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor and loads of controversy. Some of the controversies started with the idea of having a female Doctor, but the last few episodes left fans even more disappointed. In fact, some are understandably accusing the show of queerbaiting because of Thirteen and Yaz.
Even though Doctor Who mainly focuses on sci-fi adventure, there's no shortage of romance throughout the series. While the most beloved example of this is David Tennant's Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler, the Doctor has had other romantic companionships across different regenerations -- whether it was strictly implied or followed through. Not all the romance in Doctor Who has been straight either, with examples of LGBTQ+ romance sprinkled throughout the series. But, the opportunity to meaningfully explore an LGBTQ+ romance was wasted with the Thirteenth Doctor.

Doctor Who is welcoming Melanie "Mel" Bush back to the Tardis in Season 14. As anticipation mounts for the sci-fi series' upcoming 60th anniversary specials and the subsequent debut of Season 14, the BBC has announced the classic companion will be joining Ncuti Gatwa's 15th Doctor in 2024. Portrayed by Bonnie Langford, Mel originally appeared opposite Colin Baker's Sixth Doctor and Sylvester McCoy's Seventh Doctor towards the end of the series' classic run. In 2022, she also made a brief return in the BBC centenary special, "The Power of the Doctor," where she was seen alongside a host of other classic companions.

Chris Chibnall has left a lasting legacy on Doctor Who that goes far beyond onscreen elements like the controversial Timeless Child storyline. The revelations around the Doctor's non-Time Lord origins dominated much of the discussion around the era of the Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker), and that noise distracted from the hugely positive strides Chris Chibnall's era made as a whole. Chris Chibnall's casting of the first female Doctor was a strong statement of intent from the showrunner, who made increasing diversity in front and behind the camera a priority on Doctor Who.
By bringing in new writers and directors from a diverse range of backgrounds, the Chris Chibnall era saw Doctor Who explore events from beyond the UK schools history syllabus. When it was created in the early 1960s, Doctor Who had a duty to educate and entertain its viewers, in line with their history homework. Chris Chibnall's era interrogated this idea,...

I thought my days complaining about queerbaiting in beloved genre shows died when Tumblr removed Nsfw content, but the completion of the "Doctor Who" centenary special has me coming out of retirement to criticize the blatant queerbaiting injected into the relationship between The Doctor and her companion Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill). As the first female Doctor in the show's decades-long history, Jodie Whittaker's run with writing by Chris Chibnall has been ... complicated, to put it kindly.
In her review of "The Power of the Doctor," our resident Whovian expert Hoai-Tran Bui described the Chibnall/Whittaker era as being "mired in clunky writing, nonsensical plots, half-realized characters, and empty spectacle" all while "missing the heart that made those kinds of quirks bearable." Warning! Spoilers for "The Power of the Doctor"Jodie Whittaker's final episode of Doctor Who has seen the surprising return of many old faces, who form a companion's support group in the closing scenes. The Thirteenth Doctor's finale was a feature-length special that celebrated 100 years of the BBC and 60 years of Doctor Who itself. When the Master (Sacha Dhawan) succeeded in his plot to erase the Doctor from existence, the Thirteenth Doctor was helped by her past incarnations, Yaz (Mandip Gill), Vinder (Jacob Anderson), Tegan (Janet Fielding), Ace (Sophie Aldred), and Kate Stewart (Jemma Redgrave).
These returning companions from the Doctor's past had been previously confirmed, but there were still some big surprises saved until the very end of the episode. When Yaz leaves the Tardis for the last time, she's met by her old friends Graham (Bradley Walsh) and Dan (John Bishop), who take her to a very special meeting.

Doctor Who Series 13 Episode 3 Review
Warning: this Doctor Who: Flux review contains spoilers.
Well, I wasn’t expecting that.
I’d initially intended to start this review comparing ‘Once, Upon Time’to the deliberately ambiguous ‘Listen’, the Peter Capaldi serial that left whether the ‘monster’ even existed up to the audience. Then I thought, no, it’s actually more like ‘Can You Hear Me?’, co-written by Chris Chibnall and featuring the same kind of nightmare-slash-memory scenarios for the companions, underscored by a pair of creepy immortal villains.
After more consideration, though, those comparisons are mostly surface-level. For one thing, although a Weeping Angel gets tossed into the mix and their very nature tends to invoke a lot of jump scares, this episode isn’t particularly frightening. It is incredibly dreamlike, though. That combination of randomly flitting between different places and times of day without being fully aware that you’re doing so,...

Doctor Who fans are used to a long wait between seasons, but the Covid-19 pandemic may mean it’ll be some time before we get new episodes. This is because, as is the case with much of the global entertainment industry, the BBC has suspended the shoots of all its scripted programming. Doctor Who is now unlikely to go back before the cameras until the summer (and that’s at the earliest), which may mean we won’t see new episodes until mid-2021. But there’s at least one ray of light for fans: this year’s holiday special, “Revolution of the Daleks,” is still on schedule.

Tribeca Studios is dipping its toe into podcasting in partnership with iHeartMedia, teaming up on a new series called Fierce about formidable women from history.
The branded entertainment and production arm of Tribeca Enterprises — parent of the flagship film festival — is launching Fierce today (May 6). New episodes post weekly through June 17 on iHeartRadio, Spotify, Apple and other platforms.
