Hello again, dear readers! We have a brand new batch of home media releases coming our way this week, which includes a few classic John Carpenter films getting some 4K love, several recent indie horror hits, and more. If you’ve been looking to upgrade your copies of Prince of Darkness or They Live, Scream Factory has put together stunning 4K Uhd releases for both films, and if you haven’t had a chance to catch either Spiral (2020) or The Cleansing Hour on Shudder, now is your chance to catch up with both of those movies as well.

One of Scream Factory's first Blu-ray releases was John Carpenter's They Live back in 2012. Flash forward eight years and the distributor will celebrate Carpenter's cult classic with even more fanfare on December 8th with a new 4K Ultra HD / Blu-ray release that comes with a limited edition Neca figure of Keith David's character Frank Armitage, along with the previous bonus features from the 2012 release and They Live music on vinyl from Sacred Bones and recorded by John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter, and Daniel Davies.

Gary B. Kibbe, who served as John Carpenter's cinematographer on seven films, including They Live, In the Mouth of Madness and Escape From L.A., has died. He was 79.

Kibbe died March 9 at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, his daughter Cheri Faeth told The Hollywood Reporter.

On Twitter, Carpenter called Kibbe "a kind man [and] a great collaborator."

He was a camera operator on Halloween II (1981) and Big Trouble in Little China (1986), co-written and directed by Carpenter, respectively.

Poor John Carpenter. Like nearly all of the truly great horror filmmakers, his movies are destined to be misunderstood in their time, only finding the proper appreciation several years after the fact when the rest of the world is finally able to catch up to what he’s doing. It’s not always the case, of course, as he has had a handful of commercial hits; for many years, his breakthrough movie Halloween was the most successful independent film ever made. It was the rare instance in which audiences were tuned in to what Carpenter was doing at the time he was doing it. It’s John Carpenter’s birthday this week, so of course we gave a listen to one of the few commentary tracks he’s done that we haven’t covered yet. (And now we know why.)

In the Mouth of Madness (1994)

1. Carpenter himself refers to this as the third film in his unofficial “Apocalypse Trilogy” which also includes The Thing and Prince of Darkness.

2. The opening credits sequence was filmed by the second-unit at a printing press in Toronto, Canada.

3. The asylum exterior/main hall is actually a water reclamation plant off Lake Ontario, while the basement cells were built on a set.

4. Sam Neill, who plays John Trent, was cut by broken glass in the scene where his cell door window is shattered. “He wasn’t too happy about it.”

They Live was John Carpenter’s follow up to Prince of Darkness and continued his nihilistic streak of polemics against the establishment, providing a darkly comic science fiction tale. This movie revealed that there is much more to Carpenter than just horror and is an underrated film loaded with social commentary from a great director at the top of his game.

The fine folks over at Shout! Factory have done a great job with this presentation, including a nice set of bonus features to please any Carpenter fan, so put on your sunglasses and see the film for what it really is.

John Nada (Roddy Piper) is a down on his luck everyman who comes to a new town in search of work. He finds a job working construction, a shantytown to live in along with others who have fallen on hard times, and “befriends” fellow construction worker Frank Armitage...
