Peter Webber To Direct WWII Pic ‘The Prominents’ With ‘The Pianist’ & ‘Indiana Jones 5’ Star Thomas Kretschmann — Cannes Market
Image
Exclusive: Peter Webber (Girl With A Pearl Earring) is set to direct The Pianist, Valkyrie and Indiana Jones 5 star Thomas Kretschmann in WWII movie The Prominents.

Set in the chaotic final days of World War II, the story follows a group of Nazi Germany’s most prominent prisoners as they are transported across Europe, out of Allied reach, to be used as bargaining chips in the German surrender. On their journey, they endure aerial attacks, collapsing bridges, partisan raids, and the escalating threat of liquidation by their Nazi captors.

Kretschmann will star as Bogislaw von Bonin, a German prisoner battling his own demons: complicity in the war’s atrocities and the drug abuse he uses to cope with it.

Hippolyte Girardot (The French Dispatch) and Irène Jacob (The Double Life of Veronique) will play French prime minister Leon Blum and his wife Janot, respectively. Valentina Cervi (Jane Eyre) is playing...

“Jason Bourne” brings back Matt Damon to the franchise
Almost every A-list actor seems to have a franchise these days. In the case of Matt Damon, his is the Bourne series, of which he’s starred in three of the four outings (only missing The Bourne Legacy). On Friday, Bourne is back in Jason Bourne, with Damon back as well, alongside filmmaker Paul Greengrass. After a successful trilogy for Damon in The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum, he and Greengrass, who helmed Supremacy and Ultimatum, left for other interests. They’re in the fold again though, making this a summer action blockbuster that’s been hotly anticipated. Saw the film earlier this week and while I wasn’t blown away, I suspect fans of the franchise will be satisfied. Jason Bourne is made for them, after all. The movie is a continuation of the franchise, with Jason Bourne (Damon) living off the grid and mostly...

Paul Greengrass at an event for Jason Bourne (2016)
Review: 'Jason Bourne' is one trip to the franchise well too many for this spy
Paul Greengrass at an event for Jason Bourne (2016)
In every movie in the Bourne series (except for Legacy), there comes that moment. You know the one. Some shadowy government scumbag is convinced they’ve got the drop on Bourne, and they’re celebrating their accomplishment only to have the phone ring or the computer screen come on just in time for Bourne to tell them that he’s looking at them through a sniper’s scope or he’s recorded them threatening to kill the President or he’s got naked pictures of them and a goat, and as they realize just how screwed they are, here comes the Moby on the soundtrack and there goes Bourne, back into the shadows until next time. The problem is, the charm has definitely faded, and Jason Bourne proves to be one trip too many to the well, lapsing into accidental self-parody in places. There are scenes I dug and a few set-pieces that work,...

Jason Bourne movie review: Bourne again, but why?
Everything looks great on paper here: Damon’s brawny presence; the smartly staged action, etc. And it’s not unfun. But it feels less black ops than old hat. I’m “biast” (pro): big fan of the Bourne series

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

It’s been nine years since we last saw Matt Damon racing around the world and beating people up as brainwashed assassin Jason Bourne… and the weight of those interim years rests heavily upon this fourth installment. Oh, it’s not that Damon (The Martian, Interstellar), now 46 years old, isn’t up to the physical demands of the role. In fact, his Bourne is significantly beefier here: bigger, more intimidating, just plain more dangerous in an all-muscle kind of way. (Bourne appears to have been scraping out a meager living since we last saw him...

Matt Damon’s Agent Is On The Hunt In Latest Batch Of Set Photos For Bourne 5
See Full Gallery Here

After schooling bad guys in the deft art of close-quarters combat on the rooftops, today’s brand new batch of set photos for Bourne 5 see Matt Damon take to the streets, presumably on the hunt of a possible lead.

Hopping from Spain to London and now to Germany, Damon’s grizzled Jason Bourne returns to the fray, reuniting with director Paul Greengrass following the pair’s work across both The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. Set to arrive almost a decade after the release of Ultimatum, early reports tease that Greengrass’ soft reboot will be situated in a post-Snowden world, exploring some of the pressing themes of information control, democracy and cyber-security in the year 2015.

As for today’s new set photos, Coming Soon confirms that filming is taking place in Kreuzberg, Germany, with action veteran Vinzenz Kiefer lending a hand as a stunt double.

Berlinale 2012. Restored "October" + 12 "Special" Additions
A flurry of press releases from the Berlinale today, and the one you may find most interesting isn't the newsiest. You already knew that the Retrospective, The Red Dream Factory, will be featuring Eisenstein's October (Oktjabr, 1928), but today's announcement has details on the new restoration and the presentation on February 10: "Conducted by Frank Strobel, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra will perform the original score as composed by Edmund Meisel."

The second release of the day reveals that 12 titles have been added to the lineup of the Berlinale Special program, in addition to the six previously announced (here and here). Seems we can assume the first three events will be happening on Potsdamer Platz:

To celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the film journal Positif: Volker Schlöndorff's Der Fangschuss (Le coup de grâce, 1975) with Matthias Habich, Margarethe von Trotta, Rüdiger Kirschtein, Mathieu Carrière and Valeska Gert.

The European premiere of...

My Favorite Ginger
Damian Lewis.

Must I really say more? Ginger!

More than that? Look at the picture!

After his fantastic turn as Charlie Crews in the tragically canceled Life, and his sadistic Rizza in The Escapist, I've decided Lewis is the redhead for me.

Okay, okay, I'll pretend this has something to do with news. (Insert loud sigh here.) One of the Santana Brothers projects announced at Cannes is Man is Wolf to Man, is a story inspired by true events. Picture this: French Guyana, 1934. "A group of foreign prisoners escape from a penal colony only to be tracked down by a ruthless bounty hunter. The group's escape route out of the forest, Mal Paso San Pedro, which promises to lead them to salvation, is more of a moral test, where the characters betray each other along the way." The film starts shooting this fall and also stars Pihla Viitala and Vinzenz Kiefer.

Casting Call: Ethan Hawke Counts The Numbers Station, Matthew Goode is a Burning Man, Ralph Fiennes Dons a Coronet with Olga Kurylenko, More
Ethan Hawke (Daybreakers) has signed on to star and co-produce the spy thriller The Numbers Station under the direction of Kasper Barfoed (The Candidate). According to Variety, F. Scott Frazier’s Script centers around a “disgraced black ops agent tasked with a dead-end job of protecting a 20-year-old woman in the middle of the Nevada desert.” The film will begin lensing in September at the low budget of $10 million.

Hit the jump for details on Matthew Goode (Watchmen) joining the otherwise female cast of Burning Man, the pairing of Ralph Fiennes (The Hurt Locker) and Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) for Coronet, and how the excellent title Man is Wolf to Man convinced Damian Lewis (Band of Brothers) to sign on.

As written and directed by relative newcomer Jonathan Teplitzky, Burning Man will cast Matthew Goode alongside Bojana Novakovic, Rachel Griffiths, Essie Davis, Kerry Fox, Kate Beahan and Gia Carides.

Germany in the 1970s: Murderous bomb attacks, the threat of terrorism and the fear of the enemy inside are rocking the very foundations of the yet fragile German democracy. The radicalised children of the Nazi generation lead by Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhof and Gudrun Ensslin are fighting a violent war against what they perceive as the new face of fascism: American imperialism supported by the German establishment, many of whom have a Nazi past. Their...

'The Baader Meinhof Complex': Student Unrest, By Kurt Loder
From Germany, a fiery action film with lots more on its mind.

Vinzenz Kiefer, Bernd Stegemann and Hannes Wegener in "Baader Meinhof Complex"

Photo: Vitagraph Films

"The Baader Meinhof Complex" is a smart and explosively powerful movie about a German student terrorist gang of the 1970s, and the wave of arson, robbery, kidnappings and murder with which they shook their country's government — in the process triggering exactly the sort of right-wing repression against which they claimed to be crusading. The picture was a deserving Oscar nominee earlier this year for Best Foreign Language Film, and in its weaving-together of the intricacies of social ferment and the bullet-riddled reality of what the gang wrought, it's a fascinating achievement.

The Baader Meinhof Group, as the gang was called in the press (they styled themselves the Red Army Faction, or Raf), was actually led by Gudren Ensslin (played here by Johanna Wokalek), a...
