HBO announced that filming is officially underway on the third season of House of the Dragon back in April, and we now have some fairly late casting news that fans of George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood have been eagerly anticipating.
Deadline reports that Annie Shapero will play Alysanne Blackwood, aka Black Aly, in season 3. In the source material, Blackwood is a mighty warrior who ends up siding with Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) in the Dance of the Dragons before marrying Lord Cregan Stark (Tom Taylor.)
In the season 2 finale, Rhaenyra and Daemon (Matt Smith) put their differences aside and joined forces as they prepared to launch a full-scale attack on King's Landing.
We'll be meeting quite a few new faces in season 3, with James Norton (Happy Valley) previously joining the cast as Ormund Hightower, along with Tommy Flanagan as Ser Roderick Dustin, aka "Roddy the Ruin," and...

House of the Dragon is loosely based on George R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood, specifically the sections about the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. The show has already introduced us to most of the main players, including Alicent Hightower and her children. But her youngest son, Daeron Targaryen, has yet been seen onscreen. For a while, fans suspected the show may have cut him from the story, but then Alicent mentioned him in season 2, and he'll officially be introduced in season 3.
And now, we know who's playing him, thanks to the photogs over at the House the Dragons X account. Photos have come in showing the actor playing Daeron Targaryen in costume on set in Surrey, England, where the show has been doing a lot of shooting lately. He will be played by British actor Charlie Gordon, who has appeared in shows like Virtual...

Over the past few weeks, the cast and crew of House of the Dragon have been busy filming season 3 in Wales, and we've lots of look-sees. According to House the Dragons, which tirelessly brings us photos from the front lines, this leg of filming is officially done. The account is recapping some of things things we have seen, starting with some images of the huge pieces of machinery HBO has brought to areas like Anglesey and Snowdonia:
- Dinorwic Quarry
Na 2ª temporada, a pedreira serviu como Harrenhal e o Vale.
Na 3ª temporada, pelo menos 3 sets foram construídos no local.

HBO is currently filming the third season of House of the Dragon, and we're getting a close-up view of a lot of the action. Tons of reports and set pics have been leaking lately as the show films on location in Wales and England, and the flood hasn't stopped. Beware Spoilers beyond this point!
A lot of the on-location filming in Wales has involved the Battle of the Gullet, a huge naval battle that was originally supposed to serve as the climax to the second season of the show. It's now been pushed to the start of the third; expect to see it in the premiere episode.
The Battle of the Gullet involves a clash between a fleet led by Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) on the one side and a fleet captained by Sharako Lohar (Abigail Thorn) on the other; Corlys fights for Queen Rhaenyra and Lohar on behind of her rival King Aegon II.

HBO is in the thick of filming on the third season of House of the Dragon, and we are getting lots of interesting reports from the set lately. When you film on location, there's only so much you can hide and they're not hiding much.
Currently the cast and crew are filming, among other places, in Wales, on the island of Llanddwyn. One of the biggest sequences they're filming for season 3 is the Battle of the Gullet, a navel conflict the showrunner Ryan Condal has described as "probably the most complex sequence that's ever been done for television." That sounds like tall talk, but the Battle of the Bullet might just live up to it. Although it set new bars for battle scenes on TV, Game of Thrones never pulled off a big epic navel battle, which gives House of the Dragon room to leave its mark.

But later this year, the second will get a chance to strut its stuff on stage at the 77th Emmy Awards, or at least that's what HBO hopes. According to Gold Derby, the network has submitted House of the Dragon for a total of 40 potential awards.
Obviously, it's submitted the show for Best Drama Series, the top award of the night. It's submitted 10 actors for consideration. Emma D'Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen) is the only actor they've put forward for one of the lead categories. Seven others have been submitted in supporting actor categories: Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen), Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon Targaryen), Ewan Mitchell (Aemond Targaryen), Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon), Fabien Frankel (Criston Cole), Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower) and Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen). The third season of House of the Dragon is now in full production, meaning everyone will be putting on their white-blonde wigs and mounting their dragon bucks. We won't see the new episodes for a while, but we're getting more information everyday.
For instance, @westerosies — which always has its ear to the ground for news about everyone's favorite dragon show — has reported on the director lineup for next season. According to them, here's who's directing each of the third season's eight episodes:
Episode 1: Loni PeristereEpisode 2: Clare KilnerEpisode 3: Clare KilnerEpisode 4: Clare KilnerEpisode 5: Nina Lopez-CorradoEpisode 6: Loni PeristereEpisode 7: Nina Lopez-CorradoEpisode 8: Andrij Parekh
First of all, yes, it's disappointing that we're only getting eight episodes instead of 10 like we had in the first season. At some point, I hope studios will figure out that giving fans more episodes closer together in time is infinitely preferable...

It's official: HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon has begun filming on its third season. Last week we reported that Ryan Condal said on his podcast The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of that, "We are approaching the imminent launch of season 3, so it's full madness." He added that Daylight Savings time in England would happen "[j]ust before production starts." Since he previously said filming would get underway in March, that led us and many other fans to deduce that it would begin today, March 31. And it appears the tea leaves told it true.
We've had plenty of signs that filming was about to begin over the past few weeks. For example, we've seen images from Leavesden Studios of sets for the Battle of the Gullet and the city of Tumbleton. The show has been searching for physically fit sailors to serve as extras, presumably for the naval clash at the Gullet.

“House of the Dragon” Season 3 is officially in production, with two new cast members officially confirmed to join the epic HBO drama.
Both Tommy Flanagan and Dan Fogler will appear in Season 3. Flanagan will play Ser Roderick Dustin and Fogler will play Ser Torrhen Manderly. It was previously announced that James Norton would be joining “House of the Dragon’s” third season as Ormund Hightower.
HBO has also confirmed that the third season will be eight episodes, like Season 2. The first season of the show had been ten episodes. Showrunner Ryan Condal had previously addressed the episode count issue, saying at a press conference in August 2024, “I haven’t had discussions with HBO about it. I would just anticipate the cadence of the show, from a dramatic storytelling perspective, will continue to be the same from Season 2 on.”

The sets are built and the actors have their scripts: filming on the third season of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon is going to start any minute now.
On a show this big, the directors are vitally important. We know that Clare Kilner, who directed the excellent season 2 episode "Rhaenyra the Cruel," is coming back. We also know Nina Lopez-Corrado, who's worked on shows like The Night Agent and Perry Mason, will join the show this season. Beyond that, I assume the lineup will be made up of mostly familiar faces; I'm hoping that Alan Taylor, who directed the insane episode "The Red Dragon and the Gold," will return.
But one director who may not come back is Geeta Vasant Patel; she directed "The Lord of the Tides," the best episode of season 1. I still get misty watching this moment where an ailing King Viserys...

The third season of House of the Dragon is about to start shooting, and showrunner Ryan Condal gave some updates on the latest episode of his podcast The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of. Usually this podcast is about props, but Condal will occasionally share things about the Game of Thrones prequel as well.
This latest episode was actually recorded towards the end of January; you can tell because Condal and his cohost David Mandel are talking about the American Airlines plane-helicopter crash in Washinton, DC like it just happened. "I'm very tired this week," Condal said. "I've been talking a lot these past two weeks. We just finished our tone meetings. It was back to back to back. House of the Dragon Season 3 promises more fiery action as the Game of Thrones prequel looks to build on its record-breaking run at HBO. One of HBO's top executives ups the anticipation for Season 3 by teasing a bloody and "exciting" battle from the start.
Speaking with Deadline at The White Lotus Season 3 premiere, HBO's Head of Drama Series and Films, Francesca Orsi, stated that Season 3 will begin with the Battle of the Gullet, one of the bloodiest events in the show's source material, George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood. The battle was teased in the Season 2 finale, and Orsi insists House of the Dragon will waste no time getting into it during the Season 3 premiere. “I’m really excited. Martin's Fire and Blood. The battle was teased in the Season 2 finale, and Orsi insists House of the Dragon will waste no time getting into it during the Season 3 premiere. “I’m really excited. I think you’re going to be in for a great surprise on how we start the [season] with an exciting battle,” Orsi said. “You know what, it was worth the wait.

HBO series House of the Dragon has a new cast member for the upcoming third season. Happy Valley star James Norton is set to play Ormund Hightower. As Variety reported, Ormund is cousin to Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox) as well as nephew of their father, Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans). As Alicent's cousin, Ormund is also second cousin to her Targaryen sons, the fleeing King Aegon II(Tom Glynn-Carney) and his eye-patched psychopath brother Aemond (Ewan Mitchell). Ormund's title is Lord of Oldtown.
So that sets up the so-called "Green" side of House Targaryen. Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) leads the "Black" side of House Targaryen. The end of House of the Dragon Season 2 saw armies on both sides mustering for war and a handful of new dragon riders entering the fray.

We've heard that the third season of House of the Dragon will film from March through October of this year, a good long time. We have more evidence that things are ramping up now, as Redanian Intelligence reports that director Nina Lopez-Corrado is joining the lineup for the upcoming season.
Lopez-Corrado is an experienced television director who has worked on shows like The Night Agent, Supernatural, FBI: International, and Perry Mason, the latter of which was a severely underrated HBO period drama that in no way deserved to be canceled two seasons in, Fyi. Lopez-Corrado is also part of the directing lineup for the upcoming season season of The Last of Us, another heavy HBO genre drama, so she seems to be carving out a niche for herself. If you can get in good with the people at HBO, you'll have some interesting work ahead of you.

Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) and Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) are two of the most important characters on House of the Dragon, a niece and uncle who are also wife and husband, dragon-riders, and hopeful occupants of the Iron Throne...or at least they both were, but by the end of season 2 Daemon seems to have recommitted himself to Rhaenyra's cause, pledging to do whatever he can to install her as queen.
But by this point there's a lot of water under the bridge, and it's possible that Rhaenyra will have trouble fully trusting Daemon again after he took out a hit on her half-nephew and spent much of the season planning his own run at the throne.
"That scene...was a real joy to shoot where he reaffirms his commitment to her," Emma D'Arcy told Collider. "You sort of see this moment of reunification in both of them. Something that I...

As the fantasy TV show landscape grows larger and more impressive every year, older shows must conclude and make way for new projects entering the sphere. Plenty of long-running shows currently on the air are not only exiting gracefully but are completing their planned arcs. By having a confirmed end date, these shows get to carefully orchestrate a conclusion that will successfully bring the character development and story full circle, which always satisfies fans. As difficult as it is to say goodbye to such high-quality shows, it's good to know they won't suddenly be canceled at their peak.
There's hope that these series will join the ranks of fantasy TV shows with almost perfect endings since having a definitive conclusion is often better than going on for too long. When a fantasy TV show continues for too many seasons, it taints the legacy of the series, making the case that...

What Do We Know About the upcoming second season of Prime Video’s hit video game adaptation Fallout? More than you may think. Who is joining the cast?
Based on the announcement graphic, we can be certain that Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, and Aaron Moten will be back as Lucy MacLean, The Ghoul, and Maximus. It also seems certain that Kyle MacLachlan will be back as Hank MacLean based on where the final left things. Emma D'Arcy has received heaps of praise for portraying Rhaenyra Targaryen on House of the Dragon. We're currently near the start of what is sure to be a long wait for the third season of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, but D'Arcy is already thinking about the kinds of things they'd like to do.
"A privilege of my job is to work with extraordinary actors, and that’s where I derive a huge amount of energy and pleasure," D'Arcy told The Guardian about working on the show. "I enjoy the familial confines of House of the Dragon, but all that said I’m desperate to beef up my Spotlight skill section and I do want a sword next season. I want a reason to see the stunt team. Both things are true."

Last week, George R.R. Martin took to his “Not a Blog” to hint at some significant grievances with the recent sophomore season of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, promising to go into more detail soon.
The writer has now done just that, with a lengthy post outlining why he felt one particular character omission in the season premiere could have a "butterfly effect" on later seasons of the show.
He also spoils a significant season 3 death - at least for those who haven't read the book.
In the show, King Aegon and Queen Helaena have two children (Jaehaerys and Jaehaera), but in Martin's Fire and Blood, the twins have a younger brother, 2-year-old Maelor. The infamous “Blood and Cheese” sequence in the series shows the hired thugs kill Jaehaerys in front of his mother, but the events of the book are quite different - and a lot more disturbing.

'I Hated to Lose That': George R.R. Martin Criticizes House of the Dragon's Blood and Cheese Changes
George R.R Marin has been pretty vocal about what he loved about House of the Dragon. However, the acclaimed author recently took issue with how the series portrayed Blood and Cheese and the death of Prince Jaehaerys.
"I still believe the scene in the book is stronger," Martin wrote in a Sept. 4 post on his Not a Blog website. "The readers have the right of that. The two killers are crueler in the book. I thought the actors who played the killers on the show were excellent. But the characters are crueler, harder, and more frightening in Fire & Blood. In the show, Blood is a gold cloak. In the book, he is a former gold cloak, stripped of his office for beating a woman to death. It sounds like George R.R. Martin may have some issues with the second season of House of the Dragon.
The Game of Thrones author, who is also listed as co-creator and executive producer on House of the Dragon, took to his “Not a Blog” over the weekend to hint at some significant grievances with the recent sophomore season of HBO's Got prequel series.
Martin began by admitting that he’s had “a pretty wretched year,” before revealing that he is planning to list off his problems with the show in an upcoming blog post.
"I need to talk about some of that, and I will, I will… I was away from my computer traveling from July 15 to August 15, so a lot of things that needed saying did not get said. I am glad I took that trip, though. My stress levels beforehand were off the charts, so much so that...

Is George R.R. Martin ready to spill some tea?
In his latest blog post, the Game of Thrones author suggested that he has a few thoughts he’d like to share about the making of The House of the Dragon.

George R.R. Martin promised fans he would oversee the production of House of the Dragon given the backlash that Game of Thrones received after Season 8. It seems like history is repeating itself following the mediocre ending of the prequel series combined with the numerous modifications in storyline.

The season 2 finale of House of the Dragon saw a long-winded teaser for the upcoming battle reserved for Season 3, and more than the mellow ending, the events within the final chapter were far from impressive.

In his interview with The Wall Street Journal, author George R.R. Martin confessed he was no longer a part of the creative team in Game of Thrones towards the last few seasons. In the same breath, he promised more creative control in the prequel show.

The season 2 finale of House of the Dragon aired this past Sunday, with the episode - and the season overall - coming in for quite a bit of backlash.
Season 1 of the Game of Thrones prequel series laid the groundwork for the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, and season 2... continued to set up the conflict.
Though we did get to see a couple of exciting events such as the Battle of Rook's Rest and the Red Sowing, most of the episodes focused on moving the pieces into place for the major battles to come.
There's nothing wrong with more character-focused drama, of course, but the consensus among fans seems to be that most of the supporting players simply aren't compelling enough to sustain interest, and it seems obvious that HBO is padding out the story as much as possible with repetitive, drawn-out arcs.

House of the Dragon fans have found a lot to love about the latest season of dragons, dynasties, and death, which is the Game of Thrones universe. However, many have voiced the same complaint about the Season 2 finale the lack of a huge battle. Many seemingly expected the sophomore season of the show to culminate in the Battle of the Gullet, but instead the show went out with a whimper, disappointing those expecting to see fire rain down on Westeros. House of the Dragon Season 2, Episode 5, according to director Clare Kilner, “is everybody vying for power, but also about that happening through grief.”
Both Team Black and Team Green grapple with the aftermath of Episode 4’s fiery conclusion that brought about the death of Rhaenys (Eve Best) and her dragon and the ambiguous maiming of Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney). While Team Black grieves the loss of an important figure and their largest dragon, a power vacuum is filled at the Green Council. Sir Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) makes a miscalculation that opens the possibility of a new strategy for Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy). Meanwhile, her husband Daemon (Matt Smith) remains away from Team Black’s home base in Dragonstone and her son Jacaerys (Harry Collett) considers new alliances.

House of the Dragon has been a victim of an online leak ahead of its season finale, which is set to officially premiere on August 4. The leak was spread on TikTok and subsequently on X/Twitter and Reddit. It consists of several clips from the episode that will conclude the Game of Thrones spin-off's second season. The clips are said to amount to about 30 minutes of footage overall, and while a few key plot points have been revealed, the biggest spoilers - including the very ending of the episode - appear to remain under wraps (for now).

This week's penultimate season 2 episode of House of the Dragon, "The Red Sowing," finally gave Team Black the advantage in the Targaryen civil war, and if the teaser for next Sunday's finale is any indication, the Dance of the Dragons is going to be taken to another level of devastation as more fire-breathing beasts join the fray.

Along with Seasmoke seeking out his own rider, Aemond making the most sinister sick bed visit in history, and Daemon still wondering whey he's hallucinating at Harrenhall (hint: it might have something to do with the drinks your new witch bestie makes for you every night before bed), we got a surprising moment of passion between Queen Rhaenyra and her new adviser, Lady Mysaria.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for House of the Dragon season 2, episode 6.
King's Landing drama shines in House of the Dragon season 2, episode 6, with engaging character interactions and a powerful depiction of smallfolk struggles. Paddy Considine's return as Viserys adds depth to Daemon's arc, bringing closure to his visions. Some Team Black storylines lack impact, with repetitive scenes and an underdeveloped Vale storyline.
House of the Dragon season 2, episode 6 continues the fallout from Rooks Rest and the gradual build to the finale with another solid, if unspectacular, outing. The Game of Thrones prequel has settled back into the same slower, early season rhythm it had before the Dance of the Dragons exploded into life in episode 4, but thats not a bad thing. Theres some intriguing setup and strong character development in Kings Landing, Harrenhal, and on Dragonstone, although not everything works.

Phia Saban’s performance in House of the Dragon as Helaena Targaryen has stood out in the second season. The amount of complexity she has breathed into the character through her impressive acting is truly commendable. So much so, that George R.R. Martin also said that her take on the character is much better than who she was in his books. It is safe to say that those words, on their own, are a compliment of the highest regard.
Phia Saban as Helaena Targaryen in House of the Dragon I Max
One specific scene perfectly encapsulates her talent and gut-wrenching performance as the character; the funeral of her son, Jaehaerys Targaryen. The emotions felt by Helaena in those moments are written all over her face in the most tragic of ways, and the scene is truly heartbreaking.
It would seem that real-life events inspired this scene. During a recent interview,...

House of the Dragon Season 2 director Clare Kilner opened up about Team Greens decision to parade Meleys head around Kingslanding. Kilner helmed Episode 5, titled, "Regent" from a screenplay written by Ti Mikkel.
During the latest episode of House of the Dragon Season 2, Ser Criston Cole wanted to show off Team Greens victory by parading Meleys head around Kingslanding. However, they didnt exactly get the crowd reaction they were hoping for, despite receiving strong support from the townsfolk after Prince Jaehaerys funeral procession in Episode 2. Speaking with TheWrap, Kilner explained why the people of Kingslanding had a negative response to seeing the dead body of Rhaenys beloved dragon. "I really wanted Cole and Ser Gwayne to come into town the knights saying 'look what weve done, weve slain the dragon' and then smallfolk are already going through a lot at the moment because theres a lack of food, things are getting...

Sunday's episode of House of the Dragon was a somewhat subdued affair after the fiery events of last week's hour, but it did conclude with Rhaenyra Targaryen and her son Jace hatching (no pun) a plan to bring two powerful new dragons into the battle.
Silverwing and Vermithor - two of the oldest and largest dragons alive - have resided on Dragonstone for many years with no riders, but Jace believes Team Black can enlist people with traces of Valyrian blood to claim the fire-breathing beasts, thus giving them an advantage - or at least even the playing field - in the war against the Greens.
If you've been paying attention, you might have a pretty good idea of which minor characters (one only appeared in a single scene earlier this season) will become new dragonriders.
Spoilers follow.
If the show follows the book, it'll be Hugh Hammer, the blacksmith fretting about his poorly daughter,...

George R.R. Martin has been mostly impressed with Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, recently praising the franchises most devastating dragon battle yet, and the development of several characters that he had perhaps not fleshed out as much in the novel, Fire and Blood. However, that doesnt mean that the author hasnt got his little bugbears about the HBO adaptation, and one of those is a sloppy mistake in a very prominent part of the Targaryen sigil.
No animal that has ever lived on Earth has six limbs. For what it's worth, the show got it half right. Someone got sloppy, I guess. Or someone opened a book on heraldry, and read just enough of it to muck it all up. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

When embarking on HBO Maxs House of the Dragon, the Targaryen practice of incest is something viewers have to get used to. But in Season 2, Episode 5, Regent, Daemons (Matt Smith) eerie dream sequence featuring his mother was something that even the director struggled with. In an interview with The Wrap, Clare Kilner opened up about the challenges of filming the scene. The biggest issue was ensuring a love scene between Daemon and his never-before-seen mother, Alyssa Targaryen (Emeline Lambert) wasn't just for shock value.
