Doctor-Lite stories have so far been very good, which raises the possibility that the thing that′s really holding back Doctor Who is Doctor Who.

As you may know, Ncuti Gatwa was finishing filming his last series of Sex Education for Netflix while “73 Yards” was being filmed, and so the episode was pushed onto the array of ′Doctor-Lite′ stories (put simply: ones in which the Doctor doesn′t appear very much). The idea of doubling up the filming of episodes and balancing the cast accordingly has been in place since the show returned in 2005, with it formally being named as a budget-saving strategy in 2007 with “Blink”. They may also be referred to as “double-banking” episodes where two episodes are filmed simultaneously and so the regular cast can’t substantially appear in both.

Catherine Tate might not have grown up a Doctor Who die-hard, but she considers her time on the show as Donna Noble an absolute career highlight.

"I remember Doctor...Tom Baker with his long scarf and I kind of remember it, but I didn't used to watch it," Tate revealed in a BBC News interview following the release of Doctor Who's first 60th anniversary special episode "The Star Beast." First appearing at the end of series 2's finale "Doomsday," Donna would go on to star in the 2006 Christmas special "The Runaway Bride" before joining the Tenth Doctor as a full-time companion in series 4. Looking back on the role, Tate noted, "It's amazing to me that I'm part of this sort of massive conglomerate of an amazing collection of experiences, I suppose. You know, television experiences. And that's a character I play is... you know, sort of staked her claim in this story.

What have you been up to this week? Myself, I’ve been watching a lot of Doctor Who; flitting back and forth between eras, staring bemusedly at a colourised version of “The Daleks” with its bewildering new edit and shouting in excitement when Ncuti Gatwa winked at David Bradley, before popping off to revisit “Partners in Crime” ahead of this – the main event.

From an era when the show was an international phenomenon, the leading lights of Doctor Who have reunited, both in front of and behind the camera. Their unspoken mission statement is clear: do whatever is needed to make the show, which has demonstrably declined in popularity in recent years, a certified smash once again.

And so, with the band back together, they’ve chosen to begin by playing the old hits. Familiar Doctor, familiar catchphrases, familiar London.

Doctor Who's 60th-anniversary specials offer the perfect opportunity to bring back beloved characters and ignite nostalgia for fans of the show. The return of iconic duos like Rose Tyler and the Meta-Crisis Doctor, Martha Jones and Mickey Smith, and Susan Foreman and David Campbell would be thrilling to see. Doctor Who is about to welcome back a whole host of familiar faces to mark the sci-fi series' 60th anniversary. Three specials, releasing weekly starting November 25, will mark the milestone and see David Tennant and Catherine Tate return in lead roles. Tennant previously played the Tenth Doctor and is now returning as the Fourteenth Doctor, whereas Tate is reprising her role as companion Donna Noble.

Jacqueline King's Sylvia Noble and the late Bernard Cribbins' Wilfred Mott (Donna's mother and grandfather respectively) are also set to return for the 60th anniversary. Jemma Redgrave is reprising her Doctor Who role of Unit's Kate Stewart, while Neil Patrick Harris is putting a new spin on classic villain, the Toymaker. However, fans suspect there may be even more characters from Doctor Who's past making surprise returns in the upcoming specials.

Doctor Who fans now know when they will see David Tennant return as the beloved time traveler. Disney+ has announced the premiere date for the trio of 60th-anniversary specials with the release of a trailer.

Starring Tennant, Catherine Tate, Neil Patrick Harris, Jacqueline King and Karl Collins, Ruth Madely, Yasmin Finney, and the late Bernard Cribbins, the special will find the Fourteenth Doctor, looking a lot like the Tenth Doctor (Tennant), and Donna Temple-Noble (Tate) facing a new villain (Harris).

Ncuti Gatwa will take over the Tardis as the Fifteenth Doctor when Doctor Who returns for its 14th season in 2024.

Praise Russell T Davies and his list of demands – Doctor Who is coming back to Saturday nights!

There’s no more guesswork required as to when the three 60th anniversary specials will air; the BBC has confirmed that we’ll get one a week starting from Saturday November 25, two days after the show’s official birthday on Thursday 23, and continuing on Saturday December 2 and Saturday December 9.

The exact BBC One time slots have yet to be announced, but common sense says that we’re looking at the pre-Strictly Come Dancing six to seven pm hour in the UK. If Disney+ is synchronising the streaming release worldwide, that would make it somewhere around lunchtime in the US. We’ll update as soon as the time slots are confirmed.

Each new extended special was written by Russell T Davies, with music by returning composer Murray Gold, and will be an hour long.

We've known for a while that the new, huge special episodes of Doctor Who will air at some point starting in November, but the BBC has until now kept quiet as to exact transmission dates. Well, the Beeb (and Disney+ for those outside the UK and Ireland) has finally let the cat out of the Tardis, with word that the first special, The Star Beast will arrive on screens on 25 November. Yes, that's two days after the show's actual anniversary on 23 November, but a prime Saturday evening slot.

The other two specials, Wild Blue Yonder and The Giggle follow on 2 and 9 December respectively. The new specials see David Tennant back in the role of the Doctor (though this time the official 14th incarnation rather than the 10th) alongside Catherine Tate, back as Donna Noble.

And they'll have to deal with a fresh take on classic villain the Toymaker, played here by Neil Patrick Harris.

Are you ready for "Doctor Who" to enter its Disney+ era? Doctor Who is celebrating its 60th anniversary by bringing back one of the show’s most popular incarnations of the Doctor.

David Tennant, who previously played the tenth Doctor, is returning to the BBC series as the fourteenth Doctor for three special episodes later this year. Catherine Tate, who played the tenth Doctor's companion, Donna Noble, will join him. Showrunner Russell T Davies is also returning.

Other new and returning cast members set to appear in the specials include Neil Patrick Harris, Jacqueline King and Karl Collins, Ruth Madely, Yasmin Finney, and the late Bernard Cribbins.

A newly released Doctor Who trailer teases just what David Tennant and Catherine Tate are up against in the 60th anniversary special episodes.

Tennant returns to the popular BBC and Disney+ series as the Fourteenth Doctor, alongside Tate reprising her role as Donna Noble. In the 41-second video, Neil Patrick Harris’ unknown character is seen dancing with Tennant at one point, as well as Yasmin Finney appears in another clip.

1899 star Aneurin Barnard is joining the cast of Doctor Who when Ncuti Gatwa takes over as the Time Lord.

The Welsh actor, who starred in Netflix’s sci-fi series before it was cancelled last week after just one season, will play the “mysterious” new character Roger ap Gwilliam.

Barnard will appear on the show alongside forthcoming Doctor Gatwa and his new companion Ruby Sunday played by Millie Gibson.

“Pleased to announce i have joined the @bbcdoctorwho family for a little while,” Barnard tweeted on Monday (9 January).

The news was shared by returning showrunner Russell T Davies, who also announced that Jemma Redgrave would be back for Gatwa’s series as United Nations Intelligence Taskforce (Unit) head Kate Lethbridge-Stewart.

It's time for a new Doctor in "Doctor Who," but when Jodie Whittaker bid the character adieu in the season 13 finale, "The Power of the Doctor," the regeneration process had a rather unexpected outcome. The teaser for the special episodes marking the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who, which was released Sunday, not only features David Tennant making his return as the Doctor, but also Catherine Tate as Donna Noble and Neil Patrick Harris as an eccentric and unnamed villain.

Based on the one-minute clip, fans can expect plenty of action, monsters and more in the upcoming part of the series, which is set to be released in November 2023. The special episodes will celebrate the anniversary of the show, which was created in 1963 and then revived in 2005, with Tennant, who previously starred in Doctor Who for five years, coming back to Tardis as the time lord.

Doctor Who also posted on the show’s Instagram revealing that Jacqueline King and Karl Collins will be returning to reprise their roles as Sylvia Noble and Shaun Temple, respectively, in the special episodes.

The quiz one-off will be broadcast on Saturday, March 23 at 6pm on BBC One - one week before Doctor Who returns to our screens.

Famous faces from Doctor Who putting their obscure knowledge to the test include Sylvester McCoy (the Seventh Doctor) with Sophie Aldred (his assistant Ace) and Bernard Cribbins (Wilfred Mott) paired with Jacqueline King (Sylvia Noble).

They will face Nicola Bryant (Peri) playing with Andrew Hayden-Smith (Jake Simmons) and Louise Jameson (Leela) alongside Frazer Hines (Jamie McCrimmon in the 1960s).
