Fox Boosts Sound Capabilities in Deal With Formosa Group
Image
Fox Post Production Services and Formosa Group – the sound house that has worked on projects such as “Dune,” “Cruella,” “Scream” and “Mare of Easttown” – have entered a strategic alliance designed to broaden Fox creative talent available to producers, enhance the studio’s sound facilities and expand business for both companies.

The pact will give Formosa Group a presence in the original Film Editorial building on the Fox lot in Century City, where Fox Post Production Services already boasts four feature mixing stages, two Adr stages, the famous Newman Scoring Stage, a Foley stage and several editing rooms. The unit was established in the 1930s as Fox Sound.

Formosa Group launched in 2013 with the goal of becoming a go-to home for creative sound talent. It has since expanded to include numerous facilities in the U.S, Canada and the U.K., offering services for features, broadcast, streaming and interactive clients.

Emmy Winner Courtney B. Vance Pays Tribute To ‘Lovecraft Country’s Michael K. Williams; Says HBO Show’s Cancellation “Doesn’t Make Sense”
Image
On Sunday, Courtney B. Vance accepted his guest actor Emmy Award for Lovecraft Country, and took the opportunity to pay touching tribute to his recently passed co-star Michael K. Williams.

After thanking creator Misha Green, the show, his fellow nominees, fans and his wife and children, Vance said, “Finally to Michael K. Williams. Misha said it best. Michael did everything with his full heart open, with his infinite spirit and with way too much style. May he rest in power and let us all honor his immense legacy by being a little more love forward, a little more endless in thought and a little more swaggy in act.”

Speaking backstage after his win, Vance said, “I love him. We recently met for the first time. I’ve been following him and he’s been following me for a number of years. We met at an event in New Jersey about two and-a-half,...

‘Lovecraft Country’ Sound Supervisor Pays Tribute To Michael K. Williams After Emmy Win
Image
Lovecraft Country claimed its first Emmy for Sound Editing on Saturday, leading Sound Supervisor Tim Kimmel to honor cast member Michael K. Williams during the Creative Arts ceremony at L.A. Live.

“As the one who did get to work [directly] with him, I was very sad to hear of his passing. He was such a great part of the show, and many other shows as well,” Kimmel said backstage. “[He was] a great person to work with, really a professional of his craft, so I was really sad to hear of his passing.”

Williams died at his Brooklyn home on Monday at the age of 54. A cause of death was not disclosed.

A five-time Emmy nominee also known for turns in The Wire, Boardwalk Empire and more, Williams’ most recent Supporting Actor nomination came for his portrayal of Lovecraft Country‘s Montrose Freeman. He’s considered a frontrunner in his category of...

Anya Taylor-Joy in The Queen's Gambit (2020)
2021 Creative Arts Emmys Winners, Night 1 (Complete List)
Anya Taylor-Joy in The Queen's Gambit (2020)
It’s checkmate on the first of three 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards shows, and Saturday was a huge evening for “The Queen’s Gambit.” The excellent Netflix limited series led by Anya Taylor-Joy has already won seven 2021 Emmys, technically (and in mostly technical categories).

(By the way, if you think three is a lot of shows to celebrate the television industry’s mostly below-the-line workers, 2020 had Five Creative Arts Emmys shows.)

Sunday’s first show began at 1 p.m. Pt. The second Sunday show, the final one of the two-day 2021 Creative Arts Emmys, begins at 5 p.m. Pt. That’s the presentation that has most of the mainstream categories that don’t fit in next week’s Primetime Emmys.

None of the three Creative Arts Emmys shows are being televised live. Next Saturday, a highlights show of sorts will air on Fxx starting at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.

The *real* Emmys,...

‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Our Planet’: Sounds of Destruction and Survival
The powerful sounds of destruction and survival were integral to both HBO drama series “Game of Thrones” and Netflix docu-series “Our Planet.” Whether it was the epic warfare involving Dany’s three dragons or the insurmountable army of the undead (the Wights and White Walkers), “Game of Thrones” upped its Emmy-winning soundscape for “The Battle of Winterfell” from Episode 3’s “The Long Night.”

Meanwhile, Netflix’s docuseries leveraged the impact of climate change and the immersive strength of Dolby Atmos to deliver a wide range of dynamic sounds, including seabirds carpet-bombing the ocean, a scared baby flamingo getting left behind, and the massive ice carving of a melting glacier in Greenland for Episode 1’s “One Planet.”

“‘The Battle of Winterfell’ was an extreme challenge to come up with unique sounds that still fit the palette, given a whole new scope and different level of threat,” said “Game of Throne’s” sound editor Tim Kimmel.

Mpse Awards 2018: ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ and ‘Blade Runner 2049’ Take Top Sound Editing Awards
It was a clear victory for sci-fi sound editing Sunday night at the 65th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards at the Westin Bonaventure. “War for the Planet of the Apes” was the surprise winner for Dialogue/Adr, splitting honors with “Blade Runner 2049,” which grabbed the Effects/Foley prize. However, Christopher Nolan’s World War II survival epic took home the Music Score award and remains the sound editing Oscar favorite.

In addition, “The Greatest Showman,” “Coco,” “Loveless,” and “Jane” earned sound editing awards for Musical, Animation, Foreign Language, and Documentary. The big TV winner was “Game of Thrones” (“The Spoils of War”) for Dialogue/Adr and Effects/Foley. “2014 was a fantastic year for sound,” said Mpse president Frank Morrone. “The advent of new distribution channels, streaming services and gaming platforms is creating additional opportunities for sound artists to practice their craft beyond the traditional venues of film and television. Emmys: Sound Editing
Thomas J. McLean is an AwardsLine contributor. For sound editors and mixers, the broadening of TV’s audio palette into feature-film territory requires a lot of work and plenty of tricks to get shows to sound as good as they look on tight budgets and even tighter schedules. “I spend quite a bit of time trying to find the right people who can do feature-quality work but not take feature time,” says Tim Kimmel, supervising sound editor on HBO’s epic fantasy series Game Of Thrones. With 10 hourlong episodes to complete in about five months and a tight schedule on the production pipeline, work often continues until the last minute. “By the time we finish mixing the show, we’re still waiting on final visual effects, so we will end up going back into episodes that were basically completed,” Kimmel explains. AMC’s The Walking Dead is the first TV...
