Exclusive: In the first of three roundtables featuring this year’s Emmy nominees for Outstanding Casting, Deadline gathered Jeanie Bacharach (The Bear), Linda Lowy (Hacks), Destiny Lilly (Only Murders in the Building), Brett Benner (Shrinking) and Melissa Kostenbauder (The Studio) to talk about self tapes, landing the joke, and the challenges that come with preparing the next generation of casting directors.

The nominees, who each had to submit a 30-minute composition reel from the season to showcase their work, also explained how they judge their peers and what they were most proud of accomplishing on their respective shows.

Deadline: This casting category encompasses the best comedies on television right now. How do you decide which show is more awards worthy than the other?

Image
" I'm always thrilled about it and I’m always trying to do the best work," two-time Emmy-winning production designer Patrick Howe says about scoring his third consecutive nomination for Only Murders in the Building. Howe explains in Gold Derby's Meet the Experts: TV Production Designers panel that the challenge "on an ongoing series, with new material, is trying to keep things fresh and have it feel like the first time for audience; that they can see new content and look at characters in a new way and always approaching it like it's like it's a first season." (Watch our full interview above.)

Comedy Central's 100% Rotten Tomatoes Revival Series Sets Season 3 Release Date
Image
After a two-year hiatus, the wait for new episodes of Mike Judge's Beavis and Butt-Head is almost over. Today, Comedy Central announced that Season 3 of the animated series is coming sooner rather than later. The announcement was made with a wacky new trailer, which you can check out in this article. Season 3 of the revival series is set to debut on September 3, with episodes rolling out weekly.

Once again, Beavis and Butt-Head will follow the title characters (both voiced by Mike Judge himself) as they go through absurd, hilarious, and shocking adventures, with the brand of lowbrow humor that defined a whole generation back in the 90s. Per tradition, there will be a lot of sniggering, random jokes, and head-banging in the new episodes of the show — and fans aren't complaining.

If somehow you missed the return of Beavis and Butt-Head when the duo, like, arrived in the streaming era,...

The 15 Best Guest Stars On Young Sheldon, Ranked
Image
As a prequel to "The Big Bang Theory," "Young Sheldon" excels the most when it fills in the emotional gaps left by "The Big Bang Theory," portraying heartbreaking storylines teased by its predecessor, including the death of Sheldon's (Iain Armitage) father. Dramatic moments make this show stand out, but the series makes room for plenty of fun guest stars, just like "The Big Bang Theory" does.

These guest stars offer comedic relief, and they shape the lives of the main characters in a way that leads them toward their storylines on "The Big Bang Theory." But which "Young Sheldon" guest stars stand out as the best across the show's seven-season run? Our rankings include a mix of cameos and lengthy guest appearances, and are based on how each character impacts the overall universe. Monsters of California Review: Slacker Comedy Meets Sci-Fi, and Neither Wins
Image
Tom DeLonge’s directorial debut, Monsters of California, emerges as a distinct cultural artifact, a film imaginable only from the mind of the Blink-182 musician and noted ufologist. It actively channels a specific American sensibility, one steeped in the sun-drenched skate parks, suburban anxieties, and anti-establishment posture of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The film is a direct dialogue with that era’s youth culture. Its story follows Dallas Edwards, a teenager living under the shadow of his government-agent father’s mysterious disappearance. When Dallas uncovers his father’s hidden research notebooks and technology, he, along with his perpetually high friend Toe and the more reserved Riley, embarks on a decidedly Californian quest.

Their search for answers about paranormal events feels less like a structured investigation and more like a rebellious, aimless road trip fueled by cheap beer and a deep-seated distrust of authority. The introduction deliberately aims for...

Filming Wraps on Milton Hershey Biopic Starring Finn Wittrock
Hershey (2026)
Filming has wrapped on “Hershey,” director Mark Waters’ period drama about chocolate magnate Milton S. Hershey, clearing the way for a nationwide theatrical release in 2026 after six weeks on location across western Pennsylvania. Finn Wittrock plays the confectioner-turned-philanthropist opposite Alexandra Daddario as wife Catherine “Kitty” Hershey, with new castmates Alan Ruck, Richard Kind, David Costabile and Heléne Yorke portraying key figures in the entrepreneur’s life.

The $40 million production shot in Pittsburgh’s South Side, Ligonier and Harmony, where late-19th-century streetscapes were recreated with horse-drawn wagons and gas lamps. Waters, best known for “Mean Girls,” said the state’s “well-preserved historic settings and stunning landscapes” let the crew “transport viewers back to the turn of the century”. Speaking when the project was announced, he added that the film’s core is “the special love story between Milton and Catherine Hershey, who inspired his greatest legacy—the creation of the...

5 Netflix shows in danger of ending this year
Image
One of the worst feelings is getting invested in a television show only for it to get canceled well before its prime, leaving piles and piles of loose ends, countless cliffhangers, and unresolved plots. There are several variables for why television shows or series are canceled, from low viewership numbers to high filming costs.

While we do not know for certain if the following Netflix shows will be canceled this year, the chances, in our opinion, seem rather high. Some on our list may surprise you, but if there's one thing we know for certain about television show endings, they are often unexpected.

The Watcher

Believe it or not, but The Watcher is based on a true story, or a true nightmare if you will, about the Broaddus family moving into a new home only to be plagued by letters from an unknown stalker, The Watcher. The show ends without...

‘Only Murders in the Building’: After surprise success at SAG, how big can Season 4 get at the Emmys?
Image
Last year, Only Murders in the Building scored its most Emmy nominations yet with 21 — 10 more than the total it nabbed the year prior for its second season and four more than it earned for Season 1. But can it go even bigger this year with Season 4?

The murder mystery is coming off its best winter awards run following double surprise victories at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for Martin Short's performance and comedy ensemble. They are the show's first major industry prizes — perhaps a preview of its first major Emmy win? Only Murders in the Building has won seven Emmys from 49 nominations for its first three seasons, but all have been at the Creative Arts Emmys.

The Hulu series has 35 submissions across 16 categories for Season 4. Let's take a look at its Emmy prospects.

"The Big Bang Theory" spin-off series "Young Sheldon," as the title suggested, explored the life of Sheldon Cooper in his youth. Set years before "The Big Bang Theory," "Young Sheldon" introduced an array of characters from Sheldon's life who were either only mentioned or much older in the original series. This meant a whole new cast was brought on board to bring Sheldon's family and formative years to life. What some fans of "Young Sheldon" may not have realized, however, is that the cast included several actors from Disney's "Toy Story" movies.

"Young Sheldon" features Annie Potts as Sheldon's "Meemaw" Connie Tucker. Wallace Shawn appears on the "Big Bang Theory" spin-off as Dr. John Sturgis, a university professor, Sheldon's penpal and an eventual love interest of Meemaw. Both of these actors had major roles in 1995's "Toy Story" and its subsequent sequels. Potts voiced Bo Peep, the love interest of Tom Hanks' Woody,...

Richard Kind Says He’s the ‘Luckiest Guy’ as Career Soars: ‘I Just Like Going to Work and Playing Pretend’
Image
Richard Kind is at the peak of his career, and he is thankful for every minute of it. In a recent interview with Variety, the veteran performer talked about his recent string of high-profile appearances, which included recurring roles in “Only Murders in the Building,” “Mid-Century Modern,” and “Night Court,” and as announcer on “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney.”

Mulaney, Kind said, described him as being “both 1940 and 2025 at the same time.”

“I think that that’s what I do for him,” Kind explained. “He is so of today. He has musical taste and cultural references that I don’t know what the hell he’s talking about. But I would follow him anywhere. I trust him.”

He added that he is working “as much as [he] ever did,” he just happens to be doing more frequently in living rooms than on stage, so more people are noticing.

“Really the thing is,...

‘Only Murders in the Building’ Emmy odds for Selena Gomez, the Martins, and all those guest stars
Image
To date, Emmy voters have showered Only Murders in the Building with 49 nominations and seven wins, though none of the main actors has prevailed. That could all change for the buzzed-about fourth season, which aired last summer and is now eligible at the 2025 Emmys.

According to our updated odds, Martin Short (Oliver Putnam) is out front to win his Best Comedy Actor category, just months after he shockingly scored at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. His costars, Steve Martin (Charles-Haden Savage) and Selena Gomez (Mabel Mora), are both in sixth place for nominations. The three leads play unlikely crime-solvers who podcast about murders that occur in and around their building, the fancy-schmancy Arconia in New York City.

Season 4 features a sprawling roster of special guests, including two actors — Meryl Streep (Loretta Durkin) and Paul Rudd (Glen Stubbins) — who received supporting nominations last year. Due to an already-controversial new Emmy rule,...

Blink–182’s Tom DeLonge Launches Sci-Fi Adventure ‘Monsters of California’
Image
From Blink–182 frontman to filmmaker, Tom DeLonge continues his long-standing obsession with the paranormal in Monsters of California, a coming-of-age sci-fi adventure that lands on UK digital platforms from 7 July 2025. Co-written and directed by DeLonge alongside Ian Miller, the film is an unabashed homage to classic teen-driven genre fare, blending conspiracy theories, alien sightings and teenage recklessness into a fast-paced story with supernatural overtones.

Set under the sun-drenched skies of Southern California, the film follows Dallas Edwards, played by Jack Samson, whose adolescence is punctuated by grief, mischief and a consuming belief that extraterrestrial life is not only real but lurking dangerously close. Along with his closest friends Riley (Jared Scott) and Toe (Jack Lancaster), Dallas digs into a string of strange phenomena, convinced they’re connected to the disappearance of his fighter pilot father years earlier.

Their amateur investigations take a sudden turn when they discover remnants of their father’s work,...

Shrinking Boss Bill Lawrence Tees Up Reunion With His ‘Hero’ Michael J. Fox, Shares Favorite Spin City Memory
Image
You know the old saying, “Don’t work with your heroes”? Well, perhaps it actually should have been “Don’t work with your heroes… unless your hero is Michael J. Fox.”

On Saturday, I moderated the Bill Lawrence & Friends panel at Atx TV Festival in Austin, Texas — a panel that also featured Zach Braff (Scrubs), Josh Hopkins (Cougar Town), Brett Goldstein and Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso), and Charly Clive (Lawrence’s forthcoming HBO show) — and I asked Lawrence about his reunion with the Spin City star, who has already filmed scenes for Season 3 of Apple TV+’s Shrinking (premiere date...

Only Murders in the Building Confirms an Oscar-Winning Fan Favorite Will Return in Season 5
Image
Another key cast member from Only Murders in the Building is now officially confirmed for Season 5. Meryl Streep will be reprising her role as Oliver's wife Loretta Durkin in the upcoming season of the Hulu series.

The casting announcement was made on the official X account for the show, which shared a video of Selena Gomez and Streep discussing the latter's return. After Gomez, who co-leads Only Murders as Mabel Mora, asked Streep if she would be back for Season 5, the Oscar-winning actor began her response, "Well, I think that depends on—," before being cut off by Gomez, who stated, "No, no, no. That wasn't a question." While this Only Murders return is exciting news, fans shouldn't expect to see more of Streep than they did in the previous two seasons, with the actor once again expected to be a recurring guest star in Season 5.

A Very Serious Athletic Analysis of John Mulaney’s Teen Fight Night
Image
“There’s a dignity to this,” John Mulaney said in the penultimate episode of his talk show, “Everybody’s Live,” while preparing to fight three 14-year-olds live on Netflix.

Time will tell if there is dignity to be found in what occurred during the show’s teen-themed finale, but for the past month, Mulaney promised the world that he would fight three teenagers, and no one can say that he didn’t. Ben, Jacob, and Adarsh (last names withheld for legal reasons) could not have been more serious about the task at hand, and together they achieved something that should strike fear into the hearts of Hollywood.

“The worst part of fighting is knowing you gotta fight,” said guest Adam Sandler, and Mulaney quickly agreed, sharing that he was already thinking about the confrontation which would not occur for close to an hour. Indeed, for the rest of the episode,...

John Mulaney’s Fight With Three 14-Year-Olds Was a Bit of a Letdown — Because It Had to Be
Image
On Wednesday, John Mulaney made good on his promise to fight three 14-year-old boys. Well, he made Ok on the promise.

“Four weeks ago, I promised to fight three 14-year-olds. From thousands of submissions, we selected three young men that are about to join me on the mat,” Mulaney set the Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney bit up. “All you at home, all you’ve done is talk, talk, talk. It’s time to end the smack talk, end the conjecture and settle this, man-to-boy.”

The rules for the final segment on his “What Is on the Mind of Teens?” episode were pretty straight-up: no punching, no kicking, no gouging, no biting. Headlocks were legal, “so long as the arm is encircled” (one of your opponent’s arms had to be included within the head or neck lock). In other words, it wasn’t so much a fight as...

Against Everyone’s Expectations, John Mulaney Actually Fought Three Kids
Image
We finally know exactly who would win in a fight between John Mulaney and three 14-year-old boys. Now it’s time for 100 men and one gorilla to step into the ring.

At the beginning of the first season of Everybody's Live with John Mulaney, the stand-up superstar and anarchist late-night host issued a challenge to the families among his viewership based on a viral Twitter thread: Send out your finest three 14-year-old boys, and Mulaney would fight them live on stream in the season finale. Leading up to tonight’s closing episode of Everybody's Live, fans were convinced that Mulaney had some kind of cheeky rug-pull planned, and that he wouldn’t actually try to physically best a few minors and possibly end his illustrious career in disgrace.

Up until the very moment when the fighters met in the ring, it seemed like Mulaney was going to find a way to avoid violence,...

John Mulaney Set to Fight Teens on 'Everybody's Live' Season Finale Tonight
Image
The Comeback Kid. Baby J. Andrew Glouberman. John Mulaney has many names in the Netflix universe, and now he’s claimed one more: live talk show host. Mulaney is hosting, co-showrunning, and executive producing Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney through his company, Multiple Camera Productions, alongside executive producers Ashley Edens, Dave Ferguson, and John Foy.

As Mulaney reminds us at the top of his monologue each week, the talk show streams “live around the world with no delay.” This 12-episode season is a continuation of John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in L.A., which was part of last year’s Netflix is a Joke Fest. Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney, which the host himself insists will “never be relevant,” features Richard Kind as its beloved announcer; Saymo as both trusty snack-delivery robot and Richard Kind antagonizer; and a slate of rotating guest panelists who will discuss a weekly “universal” topic.

Behind John Mulaney’s Terrifying Decision to Fight Three Teenagers on Live TV
Image
The decision for John Mulaney to fight three 14-year-olds was only taken somewhat lightly.

“We air on a Wednesday. That decision was made, I think at about maybe 10:30/11 p.m. on Tuesday night,” executive producer and writer David Ferguson recalled at a recent FYC event for “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney.” Mulaney and his team realized that they rarely tease their next show, and wouldn’t it be fun to do just that?

Thus: “John Mulaney versus three 14-year-olds,” which rose out of a recent spat of online debates about 100 men fighting a gorilla. But the original idea for this week’s episode was actually much more similar to its upcoming iteration; early in the season, writer Langston Kerman pitched a segment entitled “Are you stronger than a 16-year old?”

“Pretty straightforward premise,” Kerman said on the panel. “We take a grown man who is not on television, has no experience in entertainment,...

Don't expect Poker Face to change its mystery of the week format
Image
Poker Face proudly harkens back to an older-fashioned style of television show with a mystery of the week. The Peacock show sees Natasha Lyonne’s Charlie travel across the USA and get herself caught up in murderous situations. Her natural talent for spotting a liar helps her work out the murderer, whether she wants to or not.

In the era of big arcs and complicated plots, Poker Face is committed to the classic format. Every episode features a new location, a new cast and everything nearly gets resolved by the end of the episode.

Season 1 of Poker Face had an overarching theme after Charlie got herself in trouble with the Vegas mafia. This lingering plot is resolved in the first three episodes of season 2. The rest of the series is a true week-to-week offering, with Charlie visiting baseball teams, schools, and food delivery services.
