Can't Wait for the Next 'Equalizer'? Denzel Washington's Forgotten Thriller Has a New Streaming Home
Image
Denzel Washington has been one of Hollywood's brightest stars for decades, but one of his most acclaimed projects of the 1990s was a box-office disappointment. Now, with its 30th anniversary approaching, the 1995 neo-noir thriller Devil in a Blue Dress has a new streaming home. The film, which also stars Don Cheadle and Jennifer Beals, will stream on Hulu starting August 1, 2025.

Devil in a Blue Dress is an adaptation of writer Walter Mosley's 1990 novel of the same name, the first in a series of Easy Rawlins mysteries, set from the 1940s to the 1960s: the sixteenth, Farewell, Amethystine, was published in 2024. The film was written and directed by Carl Franklin (One False Move), a fan of Mosley's work, and shot on location in Los Angeles. The film was intended to be the first part of a trilogy of Rawlins films starring Washington, but the disappointing grosses for the film...

Before Good Will Hunting, Matt Damon Starred In This Forgotten Western With Tommy Lee Jones
Image
In 2010's "True Grit" — one of the best Westerns of recent years — Matt Damon plays Texas Ranger Laboeuf, whose pursuit of murderer Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin) leads him to join forces with U.S. marshal Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges). Laboeuf is a by-the-book lawman who also happens to be a bit of a windbag who likes the sound of his own voice. As such, I'm not sure Tommy Lee Jones would be all that flattered to learn he was a big part of the inspiration behind Damon's performance.

Back in 1995, Damon appeared alongside Jones in "The Good Old Boys," a TV movie that also marked Jones' directorial debut and which he co-wrote with J.T. Allen. The film was based on Elmer Kelton's 1978 novel of the same name, in which a West Texas man named Hewey Calloway witnesses his town developing rapidly, much to his distaste. He dreams of a...

Mark Wahlberg’s Rotten Action Thriller 'Mile 22' Finds Success on Streaming
Image
Mark Wahlberg’s panned action thriller from 2018 is currently finding new life on streaming. Mile 22, which sees Wahlberg reunite with Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and Patriots Day director Peter Berg, has now found its way into the top 10 on Starz, with audiences turning to this no-nonsense tale of Marky Mark and his leadership of an elite, top secret CIA unit.

Starring Mark Wahlberg, Iko Uwais, John Malkovich, Lauren Cohan, and Ronda Rousey, Mile 22 was met with largely negative reviews upon release. The action outing stands at just 23% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences slightly more enamored and scoring the movie 44% on the Popcornmeter. “Mile 22 lets the bullets fly -- and not much else -- in a thrill-deficient action thriller whose title proves sadly fitting for a film that feels close to a marathon endurance test,” the critics’ consensus reads. Body Snatchers | Why Abel Ferrara’s 1993 sci-fi horror deserves a second look
Image
Abel Ferrara’s sci-fi horror Body Snatchers was largely overlooked in 1993, but it’s aged remarkably well in the decades since.

Movie-goers and film scholars have argued for decades over which side of the political divide director Don Siegel and his collaborators fell on when they made Invasion Of The Body Snatchers at the height of the Cold War in 1956. Did it tap into contemporary fears of an insidious communist takeover, or was it a Crucible-like jab at McCarthyist witch hunts?

Siegel always maintained that he didn’t have politics in mind when he made the film, adapted from author Jack Finney’s novel, The Body Snatchers; he simply intended it to be an entertaining, disturbing thrill ride. And what a thrill-ride it is: starring Kevin McCarthy as a small-town doctor who’s slow to realise his patients – and gradually the entire town – is being replaced by soulless pod people – it’s a tense,...

Denzel Washington’s 'The Little Things' Leaving Netflix & Headed to Max
Image
Denzel Washington is by far one of the greatest actors of our generation, but even the best have some duds. The Little Things, released in theaters and on streaming in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic, is a star-studded thriller that failed to enrapture audiences in its serial killer mystery. Featuring some head-scratching performances and a far too self-serious story, despite being so audacious, not even Washington could save The Little Things from becoming a forgotten part of the actor's recent filmography. Well, audiences can find that out for themselves before it leaves Netflix by the end of November.

The Little Things is set to leave Netflix by December 1, before it arrives back at its original streaming home, Max. The neo-noir period thriller certainly has its fans, so it is good to know that the Washington-led film will still have a place in the vast streaming world. The Little Things also...

Body Snatchers (1993) – The Test of Time
Image
There are some stories in the history of film that end up being repeated over and over again. Some of these are just simple categories like vampire, werewolf, and zombie films. Some of them get a little more granular and specific like the story of Dracula or Frankenstein’s monster. Finally, we can get even more granular and look at a specific title that has made the rounds a few times. I Am Legend by the wonderful and prolific Richard Matheson was made into three different movies with Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man, and finally I Am Legend. While King Kong and Phantom of the Opera probably have the most, Invasion of the Body Snatchers has the most consistent offerings. The 2007 iteration was a bust but the other 3 are all incredibly solid. With the 90s version turning 30 we thought it was worth seeing if it was a generic...

Naomi Watts Gives Disappointing Update on The Watcher Season 2

Naomi Watts, one of the many stars featured in the Netflix thriller series The Watcher, has some bad news for fans of the show. Although she didn't respond with news about the project being canceled, her feedback wasn't very promising.

Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan for Netflix, The Watcher premiered on the streamer in 2022 with pretty good reviews. Unfortunately, things didn't stay that way very long. The Rotten Tomatoes score sailed down to 56%, where it still remains, with IMDb reporting a score of 6.5/10. Regardless, Netflix renewed the show for a second season a little after it premiered.

Netflix's The Watcher Star Shares Disappointing Update on Season 2
Image
Naomi Watts, the star of Netflix's hit thriller The Watcher, just dropped some bad news regarding the highly anticipated second season.

While stopping by Entertainment Weekly's TIFF studio to promote her new movie The Friend, which has been playing at the Toronto International Film Festival, and reuniting with her co-star Bobby Cannavale, Watts told EW, "There hasn't been any real movement on it yet."

Related The Watcher Season 2 Is Short-Sighted

The Watcher was approved for a Season 2, which seems short-sighted and unnecessary when the finale didn't leave the story with much to expand on.

The question now for Watts: Do you have any sense of where season 2 of the Ryan Murphy/Ian Brennan-created series is? Unfortunately, the 55-year-old actress reports that she's still in the dark. "I don't have one, if there is one. I wish I could," she said to EW. "It was so fun, right?...

Oz short film starring Dean Winters and Lee Tergesen to premiere on YouTube next month; Could we see a sequel series?
Image
Before The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Six Feet Under, The Wire, or any of the other popular HBO shows, there was Oz. The one-hour drama chronicled the lives of the staff and inmates at the Oswald State Correctional Facility, a maximum security penitentiary home to the most violent offenders in the state. It’s been over twenty years since the series concluded, but creator Tom Fontana is back with an Oz short film starring Lee Tergesen as Tobias Beecher and Dean Winters as Ryan O’Reily.

Titled Zo, the short film actually premiered at the Atx Festival in 2021, but few people were able to see it. Thankfully, Zo will premiere on YouTube on May 1st, giving fans around the world the chance to finally see it. According to Kirk Acevado, who starred in Oz as Miguel Alvarez, it could even lead to a sequel series if the short film gets enough buzz.

Dispatches From The Picket Lines: Actors In NYC Hopeful For Deal But Managing Expectations – “It’s A Fine Line”
Image
This is Day 112 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Striking actors in New York City hit the picket lines in extra layering Thursday with the weather turning colder and their union’s strike against studios and streamers extending into its fifth calendar month.

Amid reports of progress in the talks out west between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, picketers spotted Thursday outside AMPTP member company offices in Manhattan included Annabella Sciorra, Terry Kinney, Kelly AuCoin, Glenn Fleshler, Stephen Kunken, Carrie Gibson, Michael Cyril Creighton, Frank C. Williams and Stephanie D’Abruzzo.

Actors said that they are doing their best to balance hopes for a settlement — which have been dashed before — with managed expectations while most continue to go without paying work.

“It’s a fine line,” Gibson, a SAG-AFTRA strike captain who had a recurring role on Max’s Barry, told Deadline at a picket outside NBCUniversal headquarters at Rockefeller Center.

‘Justified: City Primeval’ Episode 8 Asks if Every End Is a New Beginning — Spoilers
Image
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Justified: City Primeval” Episode 8, “The Question” — the season, or series, finale.]

In the end, Timothy Olyphant’s scrupulous U.S. Marshal wants what every other beleaguered public servant wants at the end of a long, hard day: a good night’s sleep. That’s it. That’s all he asks. Yet whether it’s his conscience stirring him to action or the recurring call of duty blaring from his phone, Raylan Givens isn’t resting easy — not yet, anyway. The enduring assumption that one more case closed, one more bad man cuffed, or one more just act in an unjust world will allow him to hang up his hat for good lingers over the “Justified: City Primeval” finale, as well as its preceding episodes, in a way that suggests satisfaction is little more than a myth. Even when he’s not just doing it for himself (he’s doing it...

‘Justified: City Primeval’ Episode 4 Looks for Love in All the Wrong Places… Save One — Spoilers
Image
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Justified: City Primeval” Episode 4, “Kokomo.”]

A common occurrence in “Justified” sees Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) sit down with someone most people would consider scary, but rather than beg off, back down, or express much emotion (beyond his trademark frustration mixed with mild curiosity), the U.S. Marshall is forced to reflect on the nature of his duties. Past bosses like Mags Bennett (Margo Martindale) and Ellstin Limehouse (Mykelti Williamson) are perhaps the best examples, given the credible moral dilemmas each local leader elicits from Raylan, but challenges of principle can come from just about anyone. Like, say, Toma (Terry Kinney), the Albanian mob boss who invites Raylan for a chat after the “accident” suffered by his nephew, Skender (Alexander Pobutsky).

With a pushy Norbert (Norbert Leo Butz) in tow, Raylan arrives at the meeting planning to convince Toma to let Skender tell the truth: that he didn’t fall down the...

‘Justified’ Makes a Welcome Return With ‘City Primeval’ but Needs a Better Baddie: TV Review
Image
U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) had a time-honored tradition during the six seasons of the original “Justified.” The rakish law man would chase a baddie across Kentucky back roads and trailer parks. Bullets flew, and moonshine was consumed. Still, Givens always made time for a philosophical and deep conversation with his prey before the final showdown. Raylan would learn something humanizing about his nemesis’ motivation and, inevitably, realize he himself could be a dick on occasion. These talks often featured Boyd Crowder, Givens’ frenemy played by Walton Goggins with a mouthful of Biden-white teeth, a shock of black hair and buckets of country wisdom. They were so humanizing that you often forgot Boyd was a white supremacist turned drug dealer.

In “Justified: Primeval City,” Givens’ nemesis is killer and White Stripes aficionado Clement Mansell aka the Oklahoma Wildman. At a crucial moment, Mansell (Boyd Holbrook) sizes up the now middle-aged Givens.

Lance Reddick Remembered by James Gunn, Ben Stiller, Wendell Pierce: ‘A Man of Great Strength and Grace’
The entertainment industry responded with shock and deep sorrow Friday at the news of actor Lance Reddick’s passing at the age of 60.

Those who worked with the actor, who appeared on long-running television shows like “The Wire” and “Lost” and in movies like the “John Wick” franchise and recent blockbuster “Godzilla vs. Kong,” mourned the performer and the person in equal measure. From across Twitter, love and support has been flowing.

Wendell Pierce, who starred alongside Reddick on “The Wire,” wrote: “A man2 of great strength and grace. As talented a musician as he was an actor. The epitome of class. An sudden unexpected sharp painful grief for our artistic family. An unimaginable suffering for his personal family and loved ones.” Jake Fogelnest, who worked with Reddick on “Corporate,” shared a similar sentiment.

The Watcher Season 2 Can Fix Season 1's Hated Ending Problem
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for The Watcher season 1

The renewal of The Watcher for a second season means that the problems with season 1's controversial ending can be fixed. Premiering on Netflix on October 13, 2022, The Watcher told the story of the Brannock family, based on the real-life Broaddus family who move into 657 Boulevard in New Jersey and begin to receive ominous and threatening letters from an unknown person referred to only as "the Watcher". Originally planned as a limited series, The Watcher debuted in the number one spot on Netflix and racked-up 125 million hours watched in its first four days, causing Netflix to renew the series for a second season.

While viewership figures were strong, record-breaking even, the season received mixed responses from critics and audiences alike. This is primarily down to the fact that The Watcher season 1 ended with the story unresolved, characters not really getting their happy endings, and...

Ryan Murphy shows Monster and The Watcher get more seasons from Netflix
Jeremy Renner in Dahmer (2002)
I’m anxiously waiting for Netflix to order a sixth season of Cobra Kai, but while they’re dragging their feet getting around to doing that, they haven’t wasted any time before ordering more seasons of a couple other shows I recently watched. Those are Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and The Watcher, both of which were created by Ian Brennan and American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy.

Netflix has ordered two more seasons of Monster, which will drift away from Dahmer to “tell the stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society.” The Dahmer season of Monster (read our review Here) has already garnered over 934 million view hours from Netflix subscribers around the world, and is expected to reach 1 billion hours very soon.

The “real estate thriller” The Watcher, which is also inspired by a true story (to some degree), will be getting a second season.

‘Monster’ and ‘The Watcher’ Renewed for More Seasons at Netflix
Image
After a series of misses at Netflix, Ryan Murphy’s fortunes at the streamer are up in a big way. The producer’s two most recent series for the streamer, “Monster” and “The Watcher,” have been picked up for future seasons, Netflix announced Monday.

Both shows are true crime series that Murphy created with his frequent collaborator Ian Brennan, premiered this fall, and touted as one-season miniseries. “Monster,” which bore the full title of “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” during its first season, will return for two additional seasons as an anthology series, focusing on other “monstrous” figures in history. “The Watcher,” which Murphy and Brennan co-created with Eric Newman, has been renewed for a Season 2, and will presumably follow the same cast of characters as the first season.

“Audiences can’t take their eyes off ‘Monster’ and ‘The Watcher,'” Netflix global TV head Bela Bajaria said in a statement.

Netflix is going the anthology route with “Monster,” with the streamer ordering two additional seasons of the series. Netflix has also ordered Season 2 of “The Watcher.”

Both shows were created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. “Monster” launched Sept. 21, while “The Watcher” debuted on Oct. 13.

The first season of “Monster” was officially titled “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” and followed the life and crimes of the infamous serial killer. The two new installments will each focus on “other monstrous figures who have impacted society,” per Netflix.

“Monster” proved to be a massive success, debuting atop both the Netflix and Nielsen streaming charts. It was also the number one show on the Nielsen chart for three straight weeks. According to Netflix, it is the streamer’s second most popular English TV season ever.

“Audiences can’t take their eyes off ‘Monster’ and ‘The Watcher,'” said Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s head of global TV.

Christina Ricci and Charlize Theron in Monster (2003)
Netflix has ordered two additional installments of “Monster,” the true crime anthology series that began with an account of Jeffrey Dahmer (portrayed by Evan Peters), as well as renewed “The Watcher,” based on the real-life stalking of an East Coast nuclear family. The news comes amid creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy’s domination of the Netflix Top 10 list since both shows’ premieres.

“Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” has racked up 934 million viewing hours as of Nov. 1, and is projected by the platform to top a billion in the coming weeks. It is the second most popular English-language TV season on Netflix behind only “Stranger Things 4.” The limited series-turned-anthology show also broke a Nielsen record as the seventh most viewed streaming program in the U.S. in a single week.

Netflix Expands Ryan Murphy’s ‘Monster’ Franchise With Two More Installments Following ‘Dahmer’ Success & Renews ‘The Watcher’ For Season 2
Image
Ryan Murphy has another anthology after Netflix ordered two additional installments of his Monster franchise following the success of Dahmer.

The streamer has also ordered a second season of his drama series The Watcher.

Neither move is a surprise given the ratings success of both shows, particularly the outsized ratings of Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which is on course to reach 1B hours viewed in the coming weeks.

Both Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and The Watcher come from American Horror Story co-creator Murphy and Glee co-creator Ian Brennan.

Netflix didn’t disclose what the two additional installments of the Monster anthology franchise will cover but said that they will “tell the stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society”.

Murphy is behind an incredible number of franchises including American Horror Story, American Horror Stories, American Crime Story, American Love Story, Feud and 9-1-1.

Netflix’s limited series The Watcher is introducing a global audience to a real-life stalking case out of New Jersey.

The TV show, created by prolific producers Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, dropped Oct. 13. The spooky psychological drama centers on a couple (Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale) whose dream home becomes a nightmare when they start receiving threatening anonymous letters. The starry ensemble also includes Mia Farrow, Terry Kinney, Richard Kind and Margo Martindale, playing their curious neighbors.

The series, in the opening title card, bills itself as being based on a true story. The real events were detailed in a 2018 article in New York Magazine’s The Cut, though most of the castmembers, when speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s premiere, said the show is heavily fictionalized. “I worked very closely with Ryan [Murphy] in coming up with this guy,...

The Watcher (2022)
‘The Watcher’ Review: Ryan Murphy’s Next True Crime Netflix Series Is a Joyless Camp Fest
The Watcher (2022)
The 2018 New York Magazine feature “The Watcher” had all the makings of a taut, twisty and timely psychological thriller that triggered our universal neuroses about the illusions of privacy and safety in our own homes. Journalist Reeves Wiedeman unfurled a years-long saga of the real-life Broaddus family who paid a bit too much to fulfill their American dream of escaping the city and moving into an idyllic New Jersey suburb, only to find themselves trapped in a nightmare: Almost immediately after settling in, they begin receiving sinister letters threatening them and their children. The situation spins out of control, sending the family into paranoia (both justified and not) that pits neighbor against neighbor.

It’s easy to see why six different studios were eager to snap up the screen rights to Wiedeman’s feature, but it feels as though Netflix was trying to burn off this premium piece of IP...

‘The Watcher’ Review: Ryan Murphy’s Starry Netflix Real-Estate Chiller Isn’t Worth the Investment
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Sometime in 2014, a family who’d just moved into their dream home in the upscale suburb of Westfield, New Jersey, started getting ominous letters from someone identifying themselves as “The Watcher.” Four years later, those events were chronicled by Reeves Wiedeman in a New York article that immediately went viral.

Now, four years after that, Wiedeman’s story has been turned — inevitably, given the current gold-rush for adaptable true-crime material — into Netflix’s The Watcher, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan for Netflix. But in the process, a singularly striking story has been transformed into just another ripped-from-the-headlines drama in an endless sea of content, neither bad enough to sink to the bottom nor good enough to float to the top.

As spooky true stories go, 657 Boulevard’s is a relatively simple one: Though the letters indicated a bone-chilling familiarity with and...

The Watcher: What Happened in Real Life
The Watcher (2022)
This article contains spoilers for The Watcher.

Hot off the success of his Jeffrey Dahmer series Dahmer, Ryan Murphy is back with another Netflix show inspired by a true story. This time, though, there’s a bit of a twist. The Watcher, inspired by the true story of the Broaddus family who bought a very expensive house in Westfield, New Jersey and received a series of threatening letters from someone calling themself “The Watcher”, takes a slightly different approach to true crime. It’s a weird story. And it’s never been solved, though there are many theories kicking around. The show’s approach is to allow various theories to play out, leaving you with a story that, at first glance, seems quite outlandish but with a bit of further digging is often peripherally true, could have been true, or was inspired by something that really happened.

Let’s break it all down.

Ominous letters from someone calling themself “The Watcher” are just the beginning as the neighborhood’s sinister secrets come spilling out. Inspired by the true story of the infamous “Watcher” house in New Jersey.

Review: Ryan Murphy’s Netflix megadeal has churned out some interesting projects over the years with a focus on adapting well-known true-crime and biographical stories. Most recently, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story became a massive hit for the streaming service despite the controversial approach to adapting the serial killer’s infamous story. Now, Murphy and longtime collaborator Ian Brennan are back with another adaptation of a true-crime story, this time one that is somewhat scarier than Monster but in a much different way. Click here to read the full article.

Just three weeks after Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story dropped on Netflix and became a hit for the streamer, the duo have released their next true-crime take with The Watcher.

While the Jeffrey Dahmer limited series received backlash from the family members of the serial killer’s victims for their lack of involvement in the project, the cast of The Watcher said they’re not concerned with their limited series receiving the same criticism.

Based on a true story, the series follows married couple Dean (Bobby Cannavale) and Nora Brannock (Naomi Watts) after they purchase their dream home in Westfield, New Jersey. Soon after meeting their strange neighbors — portrayed by Mia Farrow, Terry Kinney, Richard Kind and Margo Martindale — the couple begin receiving sinister letters from someone named “the Watcher.” Through the letters, the stalker starts to terrorize Dean,...
