Twenty years ago, Little Big Town were seemingly at the end of their rope in trying to make it in Nashville. The country music quartet had two failed recording contracts in the rearview mirror, with no real prospects to come.

“We were broken, and we just sat down and wrote that record,” Karen Fairchild tells Rolling Stone. “In a way, it was the best time, because we didn’t have anybody looking over our shoulder while we were making music.”

That record would be Little Big Town’s breakthrough 2005 album The Road to Here.

Exclusive: Nashville’s famed Bluebird Cafe, the renowned songwriter-friendly venue that gave an early musical home to Taylor Swift, Garth Brooks, Faith Hill and many other country and pop stars, is getting the stage musical treatment. Winners of the 88th Annual Drama League Awards were announced on Friday, May 20 2022 at a ceremony hosted by Emmy Award-winning journalist Frank Dilella at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions from the 2021-2022 theater season.

The Drama Leauge announced the nominations for the 2022 Drama League Awards on Monday morning. Deneé Benton and André DeShields announced the nominees at this morning’s official event at The New York Library for the Performing Arts. The Drama League honors both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions in their annual celebration. Winners will be announced at the 88th Annual Drama League Awards, which will be held at the Ziegfeld Ballroom on Friday, May 20.

While the League doles out four production prizes, what makes them unique is their “Distinguished Performance” award. Up to fifty performers are nominated for the honor each year in a category that combines roles of all genders and sizes. An actor can only win this prize once in their career, and once they have prevailed they can not be nominated again. This year, forty three performers contend in the category.

Mrs. Doubtfire will be the latest Broadway production to go on hiatus, on Jan. 10, following rising Omicron cases. Producers announced on Sunday that the show is set to return to the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on March 14.

“The first few months of a brand new Broadway show are an extraordinarily delicate and important period of time. With the pervasiveness of the Omicron variant of Covid-19, Mrs. Doubtfire would have to close permanently if the production didn’t take drastic, pro-active measures,” said producer Kevin McCollum in a statement.

“Out of concern for the potential long-term employment of everyone who works on Mrs. Doubtfire, and the extended run of the show, we have decided that following the January 9 performance, the production will close for nine weeks, returning on March 15,” he added.

The farcical plot follows divorced father Daniel, who dresses as a female housekeeper in order to spend time with his children. The film is best remembered for Williams’ singular performance and won the Oscar for Best Makeup. Barely 15 minutes of Mrs. Doubtfire has passed before the wife of the manic, cloying man-child at the center of the developing farce demands a divorce, and we can only puzzle over what took her so long.

Granted, the wife is no prize either, a humorless, uptight career woman caricature rarely seen these days outside Lifetime holiday TV-movies. This original musical by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss tells the stories of the six wives of King Henry VIII presented as a pop concert. Each ex-wife gets to sing and tell her story to determine who suffered the most from marrying Henry and should therefore become the group’s lead singer.

Well, poppets, Mrs. Doubtfire is the latest Broadway returnee: Producers of the musical adaptation announced today that the show will begin previews on Oct. 21 at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, with an official opening night on Dec. 5.

“I’m thrilled that the Mrs. Doubtfire company will reunite on Broadway this fall bringing their indomitable spirit and talent to this new production based on one of the most beloved films of all time,” said producer Kevin McCollum in a statement.

The musical, an adaptation by the Something Rotten! team of the 1993 Robin Williams movie with book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell and music and lyrics by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick, played just three previews performances in Spring 2020 before the industry-wide pandemic shutdown.

On Monday, producers for the new stage adaptation of the 1993 comedy Mrs. Doubtfire showed a full look at star Rob McClure in costume as Robin Williams’ beloved character.

Hurwitz’ departure – along with two other Fox Stage Productions execs – was reported exclusively today by theater industry website Broadway News.

Hellooooooo! It looks like Mrs. Doubtfire — the nanny who's really a manny (played by Robin Williams) desperate to be close to his kids after he and his wife break up — is back. Or will be. And he/she/they are headed for the Broadway stage in a musical adaptation of the 1993 film. Somehow, we're not surprised. After all, why should Mean Girls, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pretty Woman, Frozen, and the forthcoming King Kong have all the fun on stage? Directing is Jerry Zacks, whose Broadway credits include A Bronx Tale, Sister Act, and the recent revival of Hello, Dolly! Mrs. Doubtfire is headed to Broadway! The musical adaptation of the classic 1993 film has been in the "early stages" since 2015, which is when we first heard about the project. Alan Menken revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he was composing music with David Zippel writing the lyrics and Broadway veteran Harvey Fierstein writing the book. A year after that, the Oscar-winning composer told Digital Spy that a change of lyricist and convoluted schedules led to the project being put on a "creative hiatus."

Now, however, the creative team behind the musical adaption has officially been brought together. Fox Stage Productions and producer Kevin McCollum announced the news in a joint statement, saying, "Mrs. Doubtfire is such a beloved story, both laugh-out-loud hilarious and extremely moving. Fox Stage Productions and producer Kevin McCollum have announced the creative team for Mrs. Doubtfire, which is headed by director Jerry Zaks, a four-time Tony Award winner.

John O’Farrell and Karey Kirkpatrick, Tony nominees for their work on Something Rotten!, will write the book and Karey and Wayne Kirkpatrick will handle music and lyrics.

Additional creative team members, including the cast, will be announced “at a later date,” a press release said. A production schedule has also not been finalized.

The show has been in the early stages and in recent years some of the principals indicated it could have been on the verge of falling apart. But progress has also been made since then, and Broadway has seen a series of film adaptations reach the boards as backers seek pre-sold properties. A Band’s Visit, based on an Israeli film, won Best Musical at the Tony Awards in June.

At a press conference on Tuesday morning, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame rolled out its list of inductees for 2018. This year’s class will include Ronnie Dunn, K.T. Oslin, Byron Hill, Wayne Kirkpatrick, and Joe Melson, plus a first-time honor that will be presented to Reba McEntire.
