Golden Globes 2025 Ratings: 9.3 Million Viewers, Down 2% From Last Year (Updated)
Image
Update: Though Paramount initially reported that 10.1 million average viewers tuned into the Golden Globes using data from VideoAmp — which would have marked a 7% increase from last year’s 9.4 million — industry standard measurement company Nielsen counted a 2% decrease to 9.3 million viewers.

Paramount and Nielsen have been in a contract dispute since September, barring the former from accessing the latter’s data. This is not the first time VideoAmp has recorded inflated viewership of Paramount content compared to Nielsen; Paramount initially reported 11.4 viewers tuned into the “Yellowstone” finale per VideoAmp, while Nielsen measured 8.1 million.

Per Nielsen, the 2025 show hit a 1.8 rating among adults age 18-49, even with 2024.

Previously: Airing on CBS for the second year in a row, the 82nd annual Golden Globes ceremony hit 10.1 million viewers on Sunday night.

That total is sourced from VideoAmp rather than Nielsen, the industry standard, as CBS’ parent company Paramount Global is currently in a...

Nikki Glaser Pay For Hosting Golden Globes Revealed; 2026 Return Almost Certain With Cash Bump
Image
Exclusive: Notwithstanding a global calamity, Nikki Glaser will be back to host the Golden Globes next year, and the often bawdy comedian will be pulling in some bigger bucks.

The roast queen was paid a bit more than $400,000 for her inaugural Globes hosting stint on last night’s 82nd annual Golden Globes, I’ve learned. That fee will rise “significantly,” a well placed source says if and when Glaser comes back to host the 83rd annual Golden Globes for the third year in the five-year deal the Globes has with CBS.

The UTA-repped FBoy Island frontlady inked a three-year deal last year to host the revamped Globes. In the aftermath of her generally well received and circumspect tour of duty on the more than three-hour Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner produced show, support for bringing Glaser back was already being expressed late Sunday with the option looking soon to be exercised.

Golden Globes Producers Interview: On Nikki Glaser’s Joke Prep, Vin Diesel Off Script and That Unusual Camera Setup
Image
Producing an awards show is a difficult job. Balancing the awards (which are kind of the point) with creating a program that viewers at home will find fun and engaging is no small feat.

For this year’s Golden Globes, the production team of Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss once again led the broadcast for CBS, helping first-time host Nikki Glaser navigate the chaos inside the Beverly Hilton while delivering an entertainment show.

The Hollywood Reporter spoke to Weiss and Kirshner Monday to get their reaction to Glaser’s performance, that unscripted moment between Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, and trying to bring the party atmosphere of the International Ballroom to viewers at home.

Now that the Globes are over, it’d be great if I can get your next morning thoughts, how you thought things went last night and what you think clicked.

Glenn Weiss: My first thought is,...

Golden Globes Producers Want Nikki Glaser Back Next Year: ‘She Would Be Great’ at Hosting ‘In the Long Term’ (Exclusive)
Image
It’s been less than 24 hours since the Golden Globes ceremony, but the producers behind the Jan. 5 kudocast are already looking at bringing back host Nikki Glaser for an encore next year. “We absolutely had a great experience with her, and think that she would be great at this in the long term,” executive producer Glenn Weiss told Variety.

So, has she already been asked back? “Perhaps!” Weiss said. “I can’t talk officially for anything. I will say, as someone who produces and directs award shows, she really found her niche here, and I think it really worked out beautifully on this show. And I would love to see it continue.”

Weiss and fellow White Cherry Entertainment partner/exec producer Ricky Kirshner lauded Glaser for providing the proper mood for the show. “Nikki, in my mind, home run,” Weiss said. “She really prepared. She did her homework. She’s...

Who Did the Golden Globes 2025 Serve?
Image
From inside the ceremony, the writing was on the wall that the Golden Globes 2025 would be a middling telecast when “Moana 2” stars Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson presented the first award with their backs turned to the majority of the audience. There is just no way to sell a comedy bit inside the Beverly Hilton ballroom if you have not captured the attention of the extremely famous attendees lining the stage.

Proof of this was the massive difference in reception between Jo Koy’s ill-fated 2024 monologue, and the one host Nikki Glaser delivered this year. The absolute death knell for the former was that last year’s ceremony had abysmal audio inside the ballroom, giving no incentive for the guests to play along with being lightly roasted.

Meanwhile, the latter comedian’s opening monologue blasted through the speakers all the way up the several tiers of tables,...

Golden Globes TV Review: Nikki Glaser-Hosted Show Avoids Lively Vs. Baldoni, Trump & Controversy In Departure From Sharp-Elbowed Ceremonies Of The Past
Image
Coming off the teetotaling ceremony of last year, the Golden Globes tonight continued its comeback by popping a cork for the show and pouring out some old-fashioned primetime bubbly.

With host Nikki Glaser providing the watered-down drinks and spicules, the aspirational tone for the 82nd annual Golden Globes was set early on. There were a lot of TV wins that replicated the Emmys, some movie wins that look Oscar bound, but little controversy in a show that used to get down in the dirt and revel in it. Like last year, Sunday’s Globes was associated with the boozy, shambolic and often wonderfully mean-spirited show of yesteryear in name only.

Thing is, awards shows, like everything else, have to evolve or die in today’s media environment, and going upmarket may be the best bet to transform Five Buck Chuck into Dom Pérignon.

Sure there was an awkward casting couch...

Golden Globes Host Nikki Glaser Is Testing Her Monologue at L.A. Stand-Up Gigs
Image
After skewering Tom Brady during his Netflix roast last May, who will comedian Nikki Glaser take to task when she hosts the 2025 Golden Globes on Sunday? There are hundreds, if not thousands, of people who may know the answer before the show even airs.

That’s because Glaser has been practicing her Golden Globes opener at her stand-up shows out on the road and will continue to do so at comedy clubs around Los Angeles this weekend.

“I have I think nine shows between now and Sunday, because I want to keep testing out jokes and I want to keep getting the monologue in the [most] perfect place it can be,” Glaser told The Hollywood Reporter at Thursday’s red carpet rollout for the Globes at The Beverly Hilton. “Not every host does that. I’m lucky enough to be a comedian who can go and find these rehearsal spaces in front of a live audience,...

Nikki Glaser on her big Golden Globes moment: ‘I’m so excited to just share these jokes’
Image
Comedian and show producers expect to rebound a year after Jo Koy’s rough outing. “We’re going to get the best of Nikki. It’s going to hit really early and really well.”

During the Golden Globe Awards red carpet rollout Thursday, on a sun-kissed morning at the Beverly Hilton, Nikki Glaser — the comedian tasked with taming the perpetually tough room at this Sunday’s ceremony — emerged boisterous and confident despite some grim recent history. It was only last year, after all, that another stand-up comic, Jo Koy, hired just 10 days before the show, lost the audience early in his monologue and never recovered. The reviews savaged him. “Wildly offensive” was one of the milder observations.

“It wasn’t the greatest night for him or us,” Glenn Weiss, who along with Ricky Kirshner are again serving as executive producers and showrunners for this year’s Globes, admits to Gold Derby.

Beyoncé Endorses Kamala Harris Alongside Kelly Rowland at Houston Rally: “We Must Vote”

After much speculation as to whether she’d ever make an appearance, Beyoncé finally joined Vice President Kamala Harris at a Houston rally on Friday.

“We are at the precipice of an enormous shift,” Beyoncé told the crowd. “I’m not here as a celebrity. I’m not here as a politician. I’m here as a mother, a mother who cares about the world our children live in, a world where we have the freedom to control our bodies, a world where we are not divided, our past or present or future.”

“We’re all part of something much bigger. We must vote and we need you,” she said. “Let’s do this. Ladies and gentlemen, give a big,...

Beyoncé Set to Join Kamala Harris at Friday Rally in Houston
Image
Beyoncé is making good on all of those rumors.

The Grammy-winning singer is set to join Kamala Harris at a Friday rally in Houston, a source familiar with the planning confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

The event, which has not yet been publicly announced, will also see Beyoncé joined by her mother, Tina Knowles, and country music’s Willie Nelson.

A Harris campaign spokesperson said they could not confirm. THR has reached out to a rep for Beyoncé.

The planned appearance ends months of speculation about if Beyoncé would publicly endorse the Democratic party’s presidential nominee, given the impact the 32-time Grammy-winning artist could have on voters.

At the onset of Harris’ campaign, Beyoncé had reportedly granted Vice President Harris approval to use the Lemonade song, “Freedom.” The song, which champions Black women’s empowerment, has since become an anthem for Harris’ 2024 campaign.

There was then so much hype...

Amazon Reveals Brian Williams Election Night Special in Big News Experiment
Image
Prime Video is officially in business with Brian Williams.

The Amazon-owned streaming platform has set an election night special, Election Night Live with Brian Williams, which will see the former NBC News anchor lead viewers through the returns on Nov. 5.

The special will see Williams joined by “prominent contributors” who will provide insight and analysis across the political spectrum. NBC and CNN veteran Jonathan Wald will be executive producer, with Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner’s White Cherry Entertainment producing the special. Weiss, the veteran of the Oscars, Emmys, Tonys and a slew of other live events, will also serve as director of the special.

Amazon, of course, does not have its own news division, so the special will combine some familiar elements like real-time poll results and commentary, while also referencing third-party news sources across all political affiliations. A politics RedZone, if you will.

Tony Awards Returning To Radio City Music Hall, Sets 2025 Date
Image
After two years away from its most familiar home, the Tony Awards will return to New York’s Radio City Music Hall for the 2025 ceremony set for Sunday, June 8.

The 78th Annual Tony Awards will air live to both coasts from the legendary midtown venue on CBS, streaming on Paramount+. The three-hour ceremony kicks off at 8 pm Et/5 pm Pt.

The return to Radio City follows two years in which awards organizers experimented with moving the ceremony outside the Broadway theater district, to mixed reviews. In 2023, the Tonys were presented at the then-newly renovated United Palace in Upper Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood, a seven-mile trek north of the Broadway district widely interpreted as the industry’s attempt to broaden its scope and appeal beyond the usual mid-town environs.

Last year, the awards ceremony was closer to the Broadway district with a move to the renovated David H. Koch Theater...

Nikki Glaser to Host 2025 Golden Globes
Image
Nikki Glaser‘s year just keeps getting better: The standout from Netflix’s “The Roast of Tom Brady,” nominated for two Emmys for her HBO special, will officially be hosting the 2025 Golden Globes.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Golden Globes. It’s one of my favorite nights of television and now I get a front-row seat,” said Glaser in a statement. “The Golden Globes is not only a huge night for TV and film, but also for comedy. It’s one of the few times that show business not only allows, but encourages itself to be lovingly mocked (at least I hope so).. It’s an exciting, yet challenging gig because it’s live, unpredictable and in front of Hollywood’s biggest stars (who also might be getting wasted while seated next to their recent exes).”

What Really Happened with Beyonce & the DNC? Behind-the-Scenes Story Revealed
Image
What really happened behind-the-scenes at the Democratic National Convention with Beyonce?

If you don’t know, it was rumored that Beyonce was going to make a surprise appearance at the DNC. On the final day of the convention, the rumor heated up to the point that TMZ even reported that it was real.

Keep reading to find out more…

Now, two DNC execs are speaking out about what went down behind-the-scenes.

The DNC’s executive producer Ricky Kirshner shared with THR, “We never put out anything about Beyonce. We denied it every time the media asked us — even though, by the way, people on my staff didn’t believe me. I kept getting texts from news organizations saying, ‘When is Beyoncé coming out?’ But come on, we have the biggest star, the Democratic nominee for president. Why would we overshadow that?”

Director Glenn Weiss added, “This is the Internet taking...

DNC Executive Producer: Even My Staff Believed Beyoncé Was Coming
Image
Live-show veterans Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss just came off a very strongly rated Democratic National Convention — more than 26 million people tuned in Thursday night to watch Vice President Kamala Harris accept the presidential nomination.

The Emmy-decorated pair (Kirshner executive produced; Weiss directed) fashioned a four-day event marked by both flash and substance. Though the DNC veterans don’t typically choose the issue-oriented speakers — this year that fell largely to political consultant Stephanie Cutter and her team — Kirshner and Weiss have a huge hand in crafting the show’s feel and influencing the messages that reach us. They also devised that viral Lil Jon roll-call moment.

With the convention over, The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the pair on what they’re proud of, what they’d do differently and that Beyoncé rumor that wouldn’t go away.

The DNC felt a little different this year — the energy, the glitz.

In The Arena: Kamala Harris’ Chicago Convention Made The Most Of The Media Moment
Image
Kamala Harris leaves Chicago today with energy and enthusiasm that reached a fever pitch on the final night of the Democratic National Convention, something that would have sounded too-good-to-be-true just over a month ago.

Her speech was biographical, centrist and patriotic, with delegates waving small and large flags on the floor of the United Center. That followed other displays of patriotism throughout the evening, including the appearance of members of Congress who are veterans and the occasional chants of “USA! USA!”

“It was the most Republican Democratic Convention we have ever seen,” Ryan Wiggins, chief of staff of The Lincoln Project, the political action group founded by moderates and conservatives to counter Donald Trump. She compared the exuberance to the GOP convention in 1980 in Detroit, where Ronald Reagan was nominated.

Kamala Harris Wraps Herself In History & The Flag For Often Blistering Takedown Of Donald Trump In DNC Acceptance Speech
Image
“Simply put, they are out of their minds,” said Kamala Harris about Donald Trump and the Republicans during her acceptance speech Thursday night at the Democratic National Convention.

Taking a strident tone against her Republican rival and the draconian Project 2025, the vice president warned her audience: “Just imagine Donald Trump with no guardrails.”

“In many ways Donald Trump is an unserious man, but the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious,” Harris added in an often blistering 45-minute speech at Chicago’s United Center.

After a nearly week long buildup, Harris took the stage around 7:30 p.m. Pt/10:30 p.m. Et to a near-deafening cheer from the thousands of delegates and chants of “Yes, You Can!” in the Windy City. The roar in the arena hit a pitch so high it briefly pierced the ears for the first Black woman to be...

DNC Producer Ricky Kirshner On Kamala Harris’ Big Night, Putting The Big Show Together & How It’s Not The Grammys
Image
Exclusive: “The other night we had Michelle and Barack, last night we had Tim Walz, and tonight we got a major headliner,” Democratic National Convention executive producer Ricky Kirshner said Thursday ahead of of Kamala Harris’ acceptance speech later tonight the the DNC in Chicago. “So I say, the closing act is pretty good, so stick around no matter what time it is.”

A multiple Emmy winner and nominee, Hollywood and political event veteran Kirshner is an alum of Super Bowl halftime shows and the Tony Awards (for which he is nominated for in the Outstanding Variety Special category this year), and has been a part of every DNC since 1992 in New York City.

In an election year where almost everything is as unconventional as can be, this week’s DNC is actually a bit of back to the future. Unlike the virtual DNC that Kirshner and team had to...

The DJ Behind the Dems’ Roll Call Dance Party
Image
It’s usually the part of TV convention coverage when even the most zealous political junkies head to the refrigerator for a snack break. The roll call, when each state calls out the number of its delegates voting for a particular candidate, is largely a pro forma, ceremonial procedure, a bit like the Price Waterhouse segment at the Oscars, only maybe even a bit more boring.

Not this time.

At the DNC last night, the Dems turned their roll call into a raucous, jubilant dance party, with record-spinning virtuoso DJ Cassidy laying down special tracks for each state. Arkansas got Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop”; California got a sampling of Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur and Kendrick Lamar; Montana got Lenny Kravitz’s cover of “American Woman.” And so on, lasting a bit over 75 euphoric minutes.

“I got a call from Ricky Kirshner, the producer of the DNC, and he said,...

DJ Cassidy on That Crazy DNC Set Last Night: ‘Emotion to a Typically Emotionless Process’
Image
Anyone watching last night’s Democratic National Convention surely noticed a new twist: a blue-suited DJ playing songs to accompany each roll call. And with songs ranging from “Born in the U.S.A.,” “Take Me Home, Country Roads” and “Sweet Home Alabama” to “Girl on Fire,” “Despacito,” and “Good Luck, Babe!”

DJ Cassidy, who manned the turntables, isn’t a newcomer to spinning at political events: He’s also DJ’d at Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s wedding and at White House birthday parties for Barack and Michelle Obama. His...

Barack Obama Kicks Donald Trump Where It Hurts In DNC Speech Tonight
Image
Only a politician as focused and high-minded as Barack Obama can make a joke about Donald Trump’s anatomy and it’s the other guy that looks crass.

That’s what happened tonight at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago as the 44th President of the Untied States addressed a fired up United Center on why the insecure 45th Potus needs to be denied a return to the White House by Kamala Harris in November.

“He’s a 78-year-old billionaire who has not stopped whining about his problems since he wrote down his golden escalator nine years ago,” Obama said in his classic circumspect style of his Republican successor. “It has been a constant stream of gripes and grievances that’s actually been getting worse now that he’s afraid of losing to Kamala.”

Since being endorsed by Joe Biden when the 81-year-old current Potus announced he was stepping aside in late July,...

Democratic National Convention To Again Feature Celebrity Hosts
Image
The Democratic National Convention will again feature celebrity hosts each night, taking a page from the all-virtual event held in 2020.

Tony Goldwyn will host on Monday night, Ana Navarro on Tuesday, Mindy Kaling on Wednesday and Kerry Washington on Thursday, according to a convention official.

Washington was part of the lineup of hosts in 2020, when an in-person event was canceled due to the Covid pandemic. Stephanie Cutter and Ricky Kirshner, who produced that convention, have returned this year.

The convention also will borrow some elements from the virtual roll call of 2020, as some delegations went viral for their creativity in showcasing their states. The roll call will take place on Tuesday, and it will be ceremonial, as Kamala Harris already has been confirmed as the Democratic nominee in a virtual delegate vote earlier this month. The buzz is that at Tuesday’s event, it will be California, her home state,...
