Planes, Trains and Everything’s a Mess for Upfronts and Cannes Travelers at Newark Airport
Image
Let’s get this out of the way first: I love really like New Jersey. I was born there and raised there, and lived a year or so in Los Angeles before deciding to return there. I got married there (but engaged in L.A.) and am raising my kids there. It’s a great place to be, even if currently a horror to get to (or get out of).

Newark Liberty International Airport (Ewr) is a major travel hub and the east coast’s primary home to United Airlines. Its proximity to New York City and relatively cheap flights makes it an attractive alternative to JFK (John F. Kennedy International Airport;); Ewr has something like 11 to 16 nonstop flights daily to Lax and two flights per day directly to Nice, France (and more to Paris). This week, many of the area’s air travel will service TV and film industry...

One Air Traffic Controller & Trainee Managed 180 Flights Coming In & Out Of Newark Liberty Airport For 3 Hours
Image
One air traffic controller and a trainee handled 180 flights landing and taking off from Newark Liberty International Airport (Ewr) for three hours on Monday night from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

A Federal Aviation Administration (Faa) spokesperson said that at least three controllers were scheduled for each hour on Monday night. However, the spokesperson did not clarify how many of the controllers were fully certified personnel.

A whistleblower told the New York Post that the situation was unlike anything he had seen during his lengthy career.

He said that the Newark Airport control room had five radarscopes, with one controller monitoring each one.

“15 [controllers] is the target for Newark,” the whistleblower noted. “Anything less than half of that is rough. Safety begins to be compromised. If you get below half of that standard, so seven, your safety begins to be compromised, and the Federal Aviation Administration (Faa) knows that, so what...

United Airlines CEO Warns Newark Airport Is ‘No Longer Safe’ Due To Staffing Shortage Amid Massive Doge Cuts To Faa
Image
Safety concerns at Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey have resulted in the seventh straight day of delays, and a warning from the CEO of one of the biggest global airlines to avoid Newark at all costs.

Air traffic controller staffing problems paired with equipment and technology failures have caused numerous severe flight delays or cancellations and last Friday, CEO of United Airlines Scott Kirby declared, “[Newark Airport] cannot handle the number of planes that are scheduled to operate there in the weeks and months ahead.”

In recent weeks, President Donald Trump‘s administration, through Elon Musk‘s Department of Government Efficiency, has decreased the number of federal workers in nearly every agency, with cuts to the Faa raising substantial safety concerns. In February, 400 Faa staffers were laid off due to Doge cuts.

Kirby’s announcement followed a warning from a Newark air traffic controller that it is “not a safe situation...

Hulu's Futurama Has a Perfect Opportunity to Bring Back Anthology of Interest
Image
Futurama's "Anthology of Interest" episodes mirror The Simpsons' "Treehouse of Horror" with hypothetical stories and sci-fi parodies. The show's return to new episodes could benefit from more entries of "Anthology of Interest" for fresh, creative storytelling. Embracing alternate realities like in "Anthology of Interest" can help Futurama avoid stagnation and continue its successful run.

The following contains spoilers for Season 12 of Futurama, now streaming on Hulu.

Futurama has succeeded so well on its own merits that it's easy to forget the show's close association with The Simpsons. Co-creator Matt Groening ported his signature artistic style to both series, with Futurama serving as a spiritual follow-up once its predecessor had become a staple. Both shows have since traveled their own path, with The Simpsons' contemporary satire differing from Futurama's sci-fi send ups. However, they retain the same DNA at their core. They each reflect a unique style of iconoclasm that sometimes engenders controversy,...

Ted Cruz Wants Airlines to Keep Your Cash When They Cancel Your Flight
Image
After the Biden administration issued a final rule last week that would require airlines to automatically issue refunds to passengers whose flights are delayed or canceled, four lawmakers bankrolled by the airline industry introduced must-pass legislation that could undermine the effort.

As The Lever reported, the lawmakers — Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.), and Rep. Rick Larsen (D-Wash.) — introduced a new Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization deal that would require passengers to send a “written or electronic request” in order to receive a full...

Conservatives Are So Scared of Diversity They’re Starting to Boycott ‘Woke’ Airlines
Image
Nervous fliers are nothing new, and the fear of air travel is as common as they come. But a cohort of right-wingers have convinced themselves that planes are more dangerous than ever because of airlines’ diversity, equity, and inclusion (Dei) policies, which they baselessly argue have put unqualified flight crews in the cockpit. Lately, some have even expressed racist doubts in the abilities of Black pilots or pledged not to fly on commercial carriers that support for the LGBTQ community.

Although Dei has become a favorite boogeyman for conservatives of...

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby Apologizes For Flying Private After United Cancels 751 Flights
Image
United Airlines Holdings Inc. canceled more flights than any other airline totaling 751 on Wednesday. The Denver International Airport was hit the hardest among all the airports.

Scott Kirby, the Chief Executive Officer of United, was able to overcome this by flying with a private airplane from Teterboro Airport to Denver.

Kirby released a statement with his apologies.

“Taking a private jet was the wrong decision because it was insensitive to our customers who were waiting to get home,” he wrote. “I sincerely apologize to our customers and our team members who have been working around-the-clock for several days – often through severe weather – to take care of our customers.”

He continued, “Watching our team firsthand with our customers at four different airports and during countless meetings this week, it’s clear to me they represent the best of United, and I regret that I have distracted from their professionalism. I promise...
