Superman's Most Terrifying Redesign Shows Why DC Needs to Use Red Kryptonite Way More Often
Image
Kryptonite is an iconic part of Superman's lore, but it's almost always the green variant. Tons of differently colored Kryptonite exist, and Red Kryptonite is by far the most underrated - a fact best proven when one story brought back a horrifying redesign of a goofy Red Kryptonite adventure Superman had back in the Silver Age.

The Dark Multiverse is one of the most terrifying parts of DC's cosmology. It's where every story goes wrong, no matter how innocent it might start out. One horrifying example of this dark effect is featured in Sideways #8 by Dan Didio and Max Raynor. In this story, the young hero Sideways runs into a group of people who have been displaced from their homes, and one of them is a terrifying version of Superman.

This version of Superman was exposed to Red Kryptonite on his planet and transformed into a terrifying half-man, half-ant creature.

I Can't Believe How Dark Marvel Just Made One of Fantastic Four's First Ever Contributions to Its Shared Universe
Image
The Ultimates #3 cleverly parallels real tragedies with Hulk's origin story on Monster Island. Deniz Camp's use of superhero fiction sheds light on historical atrocities like the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests. The issue highlights the dehumanization of indigenous populations, reflecting real-life nuclear testing consequences.

Contains spoilers for The Ultimates (2024) #3!Going into Marvels new Ultimates, I knew the series would be interested in drawing parallels to real life, but I didnt expect it to turn one Fantastic Four touchstone into its version of a historical tragedy. Its a clever use of using superhero fiction and the actions of supervillains to show just how nasty our own world can be, and has been in the near past.

In The Ultimates (2024) #3 by Deniz Camp, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee and Vc's Travis Lanham, real history is perfectly referenced by turning the Fantastic Fours Monster Isle into a parallel to the real-life Bikini Atoll nuclear tests.

10 DC Villains Who Became Heroes (& The Reason Why)
Image
Redemption arcs in DC comics show that anyone can move past their past actions to do good in the world, even former villains. Characters like The Riddler, Lex Luthor, and Lobo have all turned from villainous roles to become heroes in unconventional ways. These unique transformations, from private eyes to space heroes, showcase the complexity and depth of DC's character development.

The DC Universe has explored the concept of redemption arcs and falls from grace for many years, with characters slipping in and out of the 'hero' and 'villain' roles every month. While many villains are more than comfortable in their roles, many have broken the mold and found themselves a new place - on the right side of morality, even if their execution is unconventional.

These characters show that just about anyone can move past their past actions and do good in the world. Though it's debatable whether all of these characters,...

DC's Most Powerful Green Lantern of All Time Returns to DC Lore & He's Basically Immortal
Image
Kneel Before Zod #7 reintroduces the ancient Green Lantern, Ekron, who regains his eye and its full power a moment that could have significant repercussions for the DC Universe at some point in the future. Ekron and its Eye have a complicated history in the DC Universe, one that leaves a great deal to be explored by future writers. The unaccounted thousand-year span of Ekron's full power, now that the massively powerful creation of the Guardians of the Universe has regained its full powers, can be explored in greater detail in upcoming storylines by ambitious DC writers.

Warning: Spoilers for Kneel Before Zod (2024) #7 ahead! While the Guardians of Oa certainly have their faults, it is indisputable that their Green Lanterns have produced some of the most powerful figures in the DC Universe. Of these elite forces, however, few of them compare to the might of the oldest Green Lantern in existence...

10 Fantastic Four Comics Ebon Moss-Bachrach Should Read For His Role As The Thing
Image
Marvel's first family is finally arriving in the MCU in just over a year, with the official release date and cast revealed for The Fantastic Four. Potentially set in the 1960s, as gracefully hinted by the reference-filled reveal poster, the cast sees the award-winning Pedro Pascal as Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as the Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as the Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the Thing.

Arguably, Ben Grimm is the most important member of The Fantastic Four, as he originally said against going on the mission that gave the group their powers and was most drastically affected by it. As the Thing, Grimm has been through immense character development, which can finally be properly portrayed in live action within the MCU. Although there are hundreds of Fantastic Four comic arcs, a select few Thing-centred stories could help prepare Moss-Bachrach for his take on the character.

The Fantastic Four's New Russian Opposites are Marvel's Most Tragic "What If"
Image
G.O.D.S. #7 introduces the Vostok 7, a Soviet space mission that mirrors the Fantastic Four, with much more tragic results. G.O.D.S. #7 artfully mirrors Fantastic Four's origin story with bold color choices and a character risking everything for family. Writer Jonathan Hickman's fascination with character parallels and Soviet history shines in this new comic issue.

Contains spoilers for G.O.D.S. #7!The Fantastic Four once set off on a space-faring mission that changed their lives forever, and now Marvel has just introduced another group whose own flight makes them both parallels and opposites to the Ff. The tragedy of this other group is that their own accident makes them victims, not heroes. According to all official accounts, there was never a Russian Fantastic Four equivalent, but theres still one hero who remembers them.

In G.O.D.S. #7, readers are introduced to the cosmonauts...

Fantastic Four: Why the 1960s Is the Perfect Setting for the Marvel Movie
Image
Ben Grimm is mad. The ace pilot would do almost anything for his college pal Dr. Reed Richards, the super-genius who has designed an experimental rocket. But Ben worries about cosmic rays surrounding the planet and threatens to drop out of the project.

“Ben, we’ve got to take that chance,” interjects friend Sue Storm. “Unless we want the Commies to beat us to it.”

With that Ben takes up the mission. Because if there’s one thing that Benjamin J. Grimm hates, its Commies. Well, at least that’s what Ben hated in the 1960s. And so he joins Reed, Sue, and Sue’s brother Johnny on a trip into space, a trip that will expose them to cosmic rays, transforming Ben into the Thing, Reed into Mr. Fantastic, Sue into Invisible Girl, and Johnny into the Human Torch. Together, they will form the Fantastic Four.

Marvel's Dinosaur Avengers Invade Earth in New Official Art
Image
Marvel’s multiverse allows for infinite different versions of classic characters, a fact that the Fantastic Four are soon to be reminded of when they’re brought face to face with a dinosaur version of the Avengers. This upcoming comic promises dino versions of everyone’s favorite Marvel heroes as the Ff must find their way home from a world where they very much don’t belong.

Marvel has released a new preview for Fantastic Four (2022) #12, written by Ryan North, penciled by Iban Coello and colored by Jesus Aburtov. The preview art features newly designed dinosaur variants of the Avengers.

Existing on a parallel world where every Marvel character is a dinosaur, it seems like these Avengers won’t take kindly to an intrusion by the regular, human Fantastic Four. Marvel identifies Iron Man as a Brachiosaurus, Captain Marvel as a Lambeosaurus and Black Widow as a Quetzalcoatlus. The issue...

Mister Fantastic Used Real Marvel Comics To Stop the First Skrull Invasion
Image
During the first Skrull invasion of Earth, Mister Fantastic used real Marvel Comics to defeat them. In 1961’s Fantastic Four #2, the Skrulls invade Earth for the first time, using their shape-shifting abilities to impersonate and frame the Fantastic Four. But the team turns the tables on the invaders — thanks in large part to Mister Fantastic using real Marvel Comics from the early 1960s to fool the Skrulls.

The Skrulls have attempted multiple invasions of Earth since their first appearance. Hailing from the Andromeda Galaxy, the Skrulls can alter their shapes to impersonate anyone or anything. This makes the Skrulls extremely hard to fight, as the heroes of the Marvel Universe have learned on many occasions — most notably during the Secret Invasion event. While the Skrulls are allied (for now) with their former rivals the Kree, they still remain a huge threat in the Marvel Universe. But, during their first invasion,...

Review: Fantastic Four No. 1: Panel by Panel

Fantastic Four No. 1: Panel by Panel

By Chip Kidd, Geoff Spear, Mark Evanier, and Tom Brevoort

Abrams ComicsArts, 240 pages, $40

The first title to usher in the Marvel Age of Comics has been previously annotated in other books, most notably one five years ago. But here, designer Chip Kidd does his usual in-depth look with incredible blow-ups of each panel of each page of the story that introduced us to Reed Richards, Susan Storm, Johnny Storm, and Benjamin J. Grimm.

The vast majority of the book is filled with these detailed looks, shot by Geoff Spear from a 1961 copy of the comic. It’s an interesting look, forcing you to examine things in extreme close-up, so much so that some panels lose detail in the spine.

It’s all too much and somewhat overwhelms you visually. And then, when we get to the meat of the book, Tom Brevoort’s analytical breakdown of the comic,...

George Klein, Elvis Presley Confidant, Dead at 83
George Klein, a longtime friend of Elvis Presley and a member of the King of Rock & Roll’s “Memphis Mafia” entourage, died Tuesday in a Memphis hospice after a two-week illness, which included pneumonia. Priscilla Presley, Elvis’s former wife told the Associated Press she had been in close contact with Klein during his illness. “Their friendship was golden, truly golden,” she said in a phone interview with the AP on Tuesday night. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard George say anything bad about anybody.” Klein was 83.

Action Comics #1000 Hardcover To Include Lost Story By Superman’s Creators
Even though many enduring elements that we now associate with Superman were products of the Silver Age or the 1940’s radio drama, it’s important that we never forget the contributions that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster made to comic books – and pop culture as a whole – when they created the Man of Steel for Action Comics #1 back in 1938. After all, that served as the very blueprint for the superhero genre as we know it today.

With that, one could say that the character’s 80th anniversary being celebrated by the release of the one-thousandth issue of Action is a bit too poetic. And appropriately enough, DC is complementing the periodical release of said issue with a commemorative hardcover titled Action Comics #1000: 80 Years of Superman. Suffice it to say, this is shaping up to be a must-own for any fan of Big Blue.

Understandably, many of you reading this...
