12 Movies That Almost Got The Infamous Nc-17 Rating
Image
The Nc-17 rating is a unicorn of sorts in the film industry -- and for good reason. Indicating a film is forbidden screening for anyone 17 and under, Nc-17 is a scarlet letter, a box office death sentence. Movies that earned the rating were previously exiled to straight-to-video releases, likely to be enjoyed in secrecy by voyeurs lurking around video rental stores (if they were on shelves at all).

Now, in the age of streaming, such a punishment doesn't spell doom the way it used to. Take "Blonde," the controversial Marilyn Monroe film that received an Nc-17 rating just 3 years ago in 2022. The film, for as ambitious and messy as it was, found success in streaming numbers and even got awards recognition.

"Blonde" is a rare example of a movie that kept the racy elements of the original cut intact, despite the threat of an Nc-17 rating. But for every film that earned the troublesome rating,...

Saw Producers Have Their Own Thoughts On The Franchise's Best Traps [Exclusive]
Image
Warning: this post will contain spoilers for "Saw X."

Throughout the 10 extant "Saw" movies, there have been at least 94 on-screen deaths, most of them quite gruesome. A few people do manage to escape the death traps that Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) locked them into, but many of the vengeful villain's victims aren't so lucky. Audiences have witnessed human bodies being ripped apart, burned, or colorfully torn to pieces. And we all have our favorites, don't we? Ranking the traps and/or deaths in the "Saw" movies is a common practice among horror fans. /Film even ranked all of the franchise's deaths back in 2017, when there were only 81 to sift through.

Many might agree that the "reverse bear trap" from the very first "Saw" is probably the best one. Indeed, it was so notorious, that it would be brought back for "Saw VI" and "Saw 3D." In the latter film, it finally managed to kill its wearer.

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency: Season Two Ratings
The first season of BBC America's Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency earned pretty low ratings, but that's generally true of shows on this little cable channel. The thing is, these series often originate in UK, or are international co-productions of some sort. In the case of this show, Netflix distributes it outside the Us, so their continue interest comes into play where cancellations or renewals are concerned. ‘Dirk Gently’ Review: Season 2 Premiere Is a Messy ‘Acceleration of Strangeness’
Dirk Gently (2010)
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the Season 2 premiere of “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency,” titled “Space Rabbit.”]

“How did I forget how annoying you are?” asks Todd Brotzman (Elijah Wood) in the trailer for BBC America’s “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.” It’s a familiar feeling for viewers reentering the world Max Landis adapted from Douglas Adams’ source material because just as with last year, this season is not content to unspool a story quietly, logically, or with any sort of restraint.

The overstuffed episode checks back in with eight returning characters (yes, we’re also counting Rowdy 3 member Vogel and the dog Rapunzel), and introduces at least eight more. Despite that surfeit of players, we have yet to even meet Alan Tudyk, who joins this year as the gun-happy Mr. Priest.

‘Dirk Gently’: 7 Blunt Statements About Max Landis and the Lunatic World He’s Created in Season 2
Dirk Gently (2010)
“Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” enters its second season on BBC America on Saturday, but that doesn’t make the sci-fi/mystery/comedy/adventure series is any easier to summarize — even with a year under its belt. A new season doesn’t bring clarity, rather even more chaos and lunacy. Perhaps this is because it’s wholly the creation of Max Landis, who only kept the hero and the absurdist tone from Douglas Adams’ novels on which the series is based.

In its first season, the technicolor-clad Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett) adopted has-been musician Todd Brotzman (Elijah Wood) as his assistant to help solve a murder using “holistic” methods in which the universe randomly provides him with the answers he needs. In short, there is no coincidence where Dirk is concerned. Along the way, the two encounter a time machine, a corgi, a holistic assassin, a kitten, four psychic...

Little is currently known about how each of their respective characters factor into the storyline, but we understand David Raymond’s genre movie centers on “an American police force that traps an online predator, only to realize the depth of his crimes goes far beyond anything anticipated.” The Zodiac Killer for a digital age? Color us intrigued.

Directing from his own script, David Raymond now presides over a truly star-studded lineup. In terms of those new additions, we know Stanley Tucci has a small part to...

Dirk Gently (2010)
‘Dirk Gently’ Season 1 Review: Come for Douglas Adams But Stay for the Weird Assassin Lady
Dirk Gently (2010)
To adapt any Douglas Adams property, one must be confident, ambitious, foolhardy and willing to fail big time. Creator Max Landis is all of those things, and for all of its faults, at least his take on “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” is wholly its own spastic, frantic and technicolor beast.

Adams’ books are not necessarily sacred texts (some may disagree), but his absolute mastery of the absurd balanced with his satirical take on human nature and an overarching cosmic view is difficult to approximate, much less imitate. Even his most adapted series “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” has had its share of tepid if not cringe-worthy transitions to the screen.

With the lesser known “Dirk Gently,” more license is given because its story and the author’s observational tone are less accessible.

‘Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency’: A Guide to How Everything Is Connected in BBC America’s Sci-Fi Mystery
Dirk Gently (2010)
BBC America already has one wacky British time traveler on its schedule, but with all of time and space at your disposal, there’s surely room for one more. Enter “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency,” a completely bonkers series based on the novels by Douglas Adams.

Created by Max Landis, the series is a sci-fi mystery with comedic sensibility and a helluva lot of storylines. Like the 2012 TV adaptation before it, “Dirk Gently” dispenses with the book’s plot — which some have proclaimed unfilmable — in favor of an original mystery. Landis’ version also dispenses with all of the book’s characters save for the titular detective himself.

Canada’s Mpho Koaho Stars in Kevin Costner’s Black or White
Kevin Costner financed his latest film Black or White himself, so strong was his belief in the material. It’s the true story of a battle between Costner’s character, an alcoholic widower, and Octavia Spencer’s character, matriarch of a big family, for custody of their bi-racial granddaughter. Costner also believed in the abilities of award-winning Canadian actor Mpho Koaho, who plays the tutor Duvan. Koaho got to work alongside the two Academy Award winners, a nice addition to a busy career that began in 1998 in the TV series Goosebumps and continues through to the sci-fi series Falling Skies. We had […]...

Black Or White Review
It’s a shame that Black Or White will only be remembered as another typical January release, because writer/director Mike Binder poses some very provocative questions about America’s current racial landscape – he just never gets around to answering them. Many films have previously begged audiences not to see race or color, only flesh and blood, but Binder emphasizes those wishes of coexistence by putting a child’s well-being at stake simply by playing the race card.

In a perfect world, there’d be unquestioned acceptance and a blind eye turned to physical differences, but we’re a hell of a ways away from a Utopian lifestyle, and the race card has transitioned from a social rights movement into an exploitable trump card in danger of losing credibility. Black Or White is a movie about love, commitment, and consciously assessing a situation that happens to involve parties of different color,...

Interview with Anthony Mackie and Mike Binder, star and director of Black or White
Black or White is the story of a grandfather, Elliott Anderson (Kevin Costner), who is suddenly left to care for his granddaughter, Eloise (Jillian Estell), by himself. But, when her paternal grandmother, Rowena Jeffers (Octavia Spencer), seeks custody with the help of her lawyer brother (Anthony Mackie), poor Eloise is caught between two families. With the best intentions, both families fight for what they feel is right and are soon forced to confront their true feelings about race, forgiveness, and understanding.

The writer/director of Black or White, Mike Binder, a native of Detroit, Michigan, is an award-winning and well-regarded actor, writer, director, and producer. Binder’s directorial debut came in 1992 with Crossing the Bridge and has included such acclaimed films as Reign Over Me (2007) and The Upside of Anger (2005), which also starred Costner. Actor Anthony Mackie, is perhaps best known as Sam Wilson/Falcon from Captain America: The Winter Soldier...

'Black or White' (2015) Movie Review
"Do you hate black peoplec" "Not all of them..." This is the beginning of a courtroom exchange that takes place late in Mike Binder's Black or White and it absolutely, without a doubt, makes for the best couple of minutes in what is an otherwise unoriginal race drama involving a white grandfather fighting for custody of his half-black granddaughter. It's a scene that has something to say in a very honest, upfront way and it makes me wonder why Binder felt it was necessary to beat the audience over the head with stereotypes over the course of the rest of the film. Is it a lack of confidencec A fear of telling a racially charged story and not wanting to appear insensitivec What is itc Tackling racial issues is no easy feat, but sugar-coating things so it's easier to confront tough topics doesn't make it any better. Beyond racial themes,...

‘American Sniper’ Looks to Steamroll ‘Project Almanac,’ ‘Black or White’ at Super Bowl Box Office
Bradley Cooper in American Sniper (2014)
With the Super Bowl kicking off Sunday, it seems somehow appropriate that we’re looking at another “American Sniper” blowout at the box office this weekend.

The NFL’s biggest game has seen more than its share of lopsided contests over the years, and if Las Vegas set odds on the movies, the breakout hit from Warner Bros. would be a 35-point favorite.
