15 Best TV Shows Like New Girl
Image
When "New Girl" ended in 2018 after seven seasons, it undoubtedly left a hole in people's hearts. Since 2011, people tuned into Fox every week to see what mishaps and misunderstandings Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) and her roommates would get into. There's no shortage of incredible "New Girl" episodes to watch, and if you go back, you may find new things to appreciate. Even if you don't, it's hard to get tired of watching an episode like "Background Check" where everyone's eccentricities are dialed up to 11.

Naturally, you may be ready to fill said heart-hole with something new yet oddly similar. "New Girl" is far from the only sitcom about a group of friends figuring out what to do in life while getting into copious high jinks. Or maybe you want something with a quirky female lead who's prone to burst into song. There can only ever be one "New Girl," but...

This 2020 Horror Western Offers the Best of Both Genres
Image
Western horror is a criminally underutilized genre blend. The scorching sun hanging over the backdrop of the Old West can prove bleak and hostile, making this extreme environment the perfect stage for grittier horrors. This was clearly the thought process behind Aaron B. Koontz’s 2020 The Pale Door. Following brothers Jake (Devin Druid) and Duncan (Zachary Knighton), members of the outlaw Dalton gang, in the wake of a train heist, The Pale Door takes a surprising turn into supernatural horror. This pivot from a stereotypical cowboy flick into insane witchcraft is smooth and makes for a riveting watch.

Happy Endings and The Mindy Project fan favorite Adam Pally credits a twist of fate for helping launch his new comedy mockumentary series Mr. Throwback on Peacock, co-starring NBA Golden State Warriors titan and Olympian Stephen Curry. In a recent MovieWeb interview, Pally said:

Steph's amazingly talented wife, Ayesha, had a show on HBO [About Last Night], and my wife and I were on it, and so was David Caspe and his wife, Casey Wilson [both of Happy Endings], a good friend of mine. Everyone just kind of hit it off in this very playful way, and the next day, their producer called us because I think they knew that we were looking for something to do together again. And they said, Do you have any ideas for a show? And we said, Give us a second.

The next call went to Happy Endings and Champaign Ill writers Matthew and Daniel Libman,...

Fire up the ribs, alert the staff at Rosita’s and wake up Chad the underwear monster because the curse of Penny’s birthday has been lifted! A soul-killing 11 years ago this month, the world lost one of the greatest TV comedies to ever be mistreated by a network: Happy Endings. After three seasons and probably twice as many time-slot changes, the eminently quotable, easily rewatchable ABC sitcom created by David Caspe delivered its traditional season-finale wedding episode. At the time, none of us knew that it would be the last we’d see of Chicago hot mess Penny Hartz, her gay bestie Max Blum (Knuckles‘ Adam Pally) and unrequited crush Dave Rose (Zachary Knighton), his on-off girlfriend Alex Kerkovich (Elisha Cuthbert), her sister Jane (Eliza Coupe) and brother-in-law Brad Williams (Damon Wayans Jr.). Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Magnum P.I. series finale.] Magnum P.I. could very well be over for good, but given that NBC picked it up for 20 more episodes following CBS‘ cancellation, it’s not out of the realm of possibility to consider it could come back. In fact, Jay Hernandez (who plays Thomas Magnum) shared on X the day before the series finale aired, “I actually floated the idea of a standalone film. I suppose it’s still possible. If I’m being totally honest I didn’t love the show ending how it did.” The final episode did leave a few things hanging, including the future for Magnum and Higgins (Perdita Weeks). She’d found an engagement ring earlier in the finale, though it turned out to be Magnum was just holding onto it for Rick (Zachary Knighton). That did lead to the couple discussing marriage, however, after she couldn’t stop thinking...

Showrunner Eric Guggenheim reveals what storyline he had planned for Magnum P.I. if it hadn't been canceled. Magnum P.I.'s Zachary Knighton Captures the Humor in Directing Debut
Image
Magnum P.I. is coming to an end. Again. After four seasons aired on CBS, the network axed the TV series, only for NBC to save it for a fifth and final season. But with only a handful of episodes remaining, Magnum P.I. still has plenty of thrills and treats in store for audiences. "Consciousness of Guilt" marked the directorial debut for series regular Zachary Knighton. The Happy Endings actor portrays Rick, a former Marine who runs his own bar, the hip La Mariana. Once a playboy, he's settled down and become a father.

Meanwhile, Jin becomes convinced that something sinister has befallen the client he house sits for after she goes on an ''unexpected'' trip, leaving a friend to watch over her place. 'Magnum P.I.'s Perdita Weeks Says a Bittersweet Goodbye After Five Seasons

For five seasons, Perdita Weeks has played Juliet Higgins on Magnum P.I., a show that, thanks to a devoted fan base, made the rare move of switching networks and getting to finish out its run at NBC before finally bidding farewell with its series finale in January 2024. Before that happens, Weeks got the opportunity to take on an episode as director, following in the footsteps of co-stars Jay Hernandez (who plays Thomas Magnum) and Zachary Knighton (who plays Rick). The episode, entitled “Extracurricular Activities,” saw Magnum and Higgins get hired to investigate a University of Oahu professor accused of an inappropriate relationship with a female grad student that turned out to be so much more, and it had all the high-stakes action and heartfelt emotion that is right in the sweet spot of what the series does best.

Jay Hernandez and Perdita Weeks in Magnum P.I. (2018)
Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 18 Review: Extracurricular Activities
Jay Hernandez and Perdita Weeks in Magnum P.I. (2018)
This was one entertaining debate on the relative value of higher education.

What was enjoyable was how this discussion on Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 18 took place both on a university campus and in the woods.

Thomas and Juliet fit relatively easily on a university campus, her on the academic side and him on the leisure side. Couldn't you see her giving a lecture and him at that toga party?

The case of the week was even somewhat topical, as they investigated allegations against a hotshot professor using his position to exploit ambitious female students.

Sure, Brody was a stereotype that has been repeatedly seen on TV. Fortunately, it turned out that more was going on than met the eye.

Nothing was easy for the P.I. couple in this case. It didn't make sense that Higgins couldn't do her usual hacking remotely. So they had to head back to school.

‘Magnum P.I.’: Perdita Weeks Talks Directing Action & How Series Ends for Miggy
Image
There are only a few episodes left of Magnum P.I., and after Zachary Knighton stepped behind the camera for last week’s, it’s Perdita Weeks‘ turn as director with the December 13 “Extracurricular Activities.” “Honestly, I would’ve taken any episode,” Weeks tells TV Insider. “I just got really lucky. It was written also by my favorite writer that we had on the team, Katie Varney, and we got on really well. I knew that we would — [we’re a] similar age — and I really, really enjoyed working with her. It was Eric Guggenheim’s idea, I imagine, to pair us up. It was just really, really fun. It was actually quite collaborative because there was a large sequence in it, which we kind of devised together because we weren’t sure what was going to be available on the day that wasn’t on the page at the beginning. I’m...

Magnum P.I. Director Acknowledges Fan Campaign As Reboot Show Prepares To End With Season 5
Image
Magnum P.I. was initially canceled by CBS, but a massive fan campaign led to the show being picked up by NBC for a fifth and final season. Zachary Knighton, who stars in the reboot, acknowledges the passionate fans and their efforts to save the show, expressing gratitude for their support. The show's cancellation after season 5 was due to contractual negotiations and a decline in viewership numbers following the move to NBC.

Magnum P.I. director and actor Zachary Knighton acknowledges the huge fan campaign that occurred after the show’s initial cancelation. Based on Donald P. Bellisario and Glen A. Larson’s 1980 show of the same name, Magnum P.I. follows Jay Hernandez's Thomas Magnum, a Hawaiian private investigator and former Seal member who solves different crimes. After four relatively successful seasons, CBS pulled the plug on the action drama show, which prompted a big fan campaign to save the show.

Higgins in Benji (1974)
Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 17 Review: Consciousness of Guilt
Higgins in Benji (1974)
Are Thomas and Juliet better together or apart?

That relationship quandary was at the heart of Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 17, and it made for a couple of entertaining cases, one comedic, one dramatic.

Higgins had no one but herself to blame for what was to transpire.

On yet another day beginning at La Mariana, Rick and T.C. were fawning like schoolgirls over their rekindled romances with Suzy and Mahina, respectively.

This set Juliet to pondering: Did she and Thomas spend too much time together?

This is a question with which couples who work and live together must navigate, so it's relevant to many viewers.

Magnum correctly saw Higgins' query as a trap. Fortunately, circumstances quickly gave him an out, as the work partners had two cases with which to deal.

Juliet should have been careful what she wished for, as she ended up with Jin.

For once, Jin...

The reboot series producer Eric Guggenheim spoke to Collider about NBC's abrupt decision to end the Jay Hernandez-led show as its final run of episodes for Season 5 are currently airing. Though the upcoming finale titled "The Big Squeeze" was not filmed intentionally as a conclusion to the series, Guggenheim believes that the audience that supported Magnum since its CBS years will be pleased with the ending. "In the case of this season, the finale was not written to be a series finale, but because we hadn’t gotten a pickup, we did take that possibility into consideration as we were crafting it," Guggenheim said.
