How Accurate Is Conclave's Depiction of the Papal Election Process?
Image
Based on Robert Harris's book of the same name, Conclave stars Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini. The movie offers a glimpse into the ceremonial and secretive process of electing a new pope. After the mysterious death of the sitting pontiff in Conclave, the papal conclave must convene to choose his successor. One man, Cardinal Lawrence (played by Fiennes), is tasked with organizing the election amid the discovery of a shocking secret that could destroy the Church.

The intrigue and suspense of Conclave are fictional, but they rival what happens when a real papal conclave takes place. Behind closed doors, the College of Cardinals goes through a series of steps to choose the new leader of the Catholic Church while the world watches with eager anticipation.

Conclave Ending, Explained: What the Final Twist Means for the Church
Image
Spoiler Alert: Spoilers follow for ConclaveAfter a relatively dry last couple of months, the tail end of October and November are set to finally see a plethora of exciting films released as the Oscar season heats up. Its seemed like a relatively uneventful race thus far, outside of Joker: Folie Deux crashing and burning, but this weekend sees the opening of an almost surefire contender, Conclave. Directed by Edward Berger of 2022s surprisingly great reimagining of All Quiet on the Western Front, Conclave focuses on the impending election for a successor to the pope, during which the candidates clash for power and influence over their fellow cardinals.

While obviously its directed with more restraint than Bergers recent war epic, Conclave makes a seemingly boring premise exciting; it feels almost like a claustrophobic thriller at times. Its also delightfully pulpy, a sort of Succession with popes, with all the backstabbing...

Conclave Review: Catty Cardinals Choose The New Pope In Riveting & Shockingly Excellent Drama
Image
This review was originally published during the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.

Conclave is a deceptive film, one that wears the cloak of awards bait but reveals itself to be something much different as it unfolds. Directed by Edward Berger, who won Best International Feature for All Quiet on the Western Front, Conclave has a simple premise: when the pope dies, cardinals from all over the world are sequestered as they choose the holy fathers successor.

Starring Ralph Fiennes, the film follows a cardinal in the midst of a vast conspiracy during the selection of a new pope, one of the most secretive processes in the world. Conclave is in theaters this weekend, and it's safe to say it's probably the best film out on the big screen at this moment.

With a 93% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, Conclave is gearing up to be a must-watch this weekend. Armored with a stacked cast, the film is being praised for its "riveting" script that takes time to develop but is more than worth the audience's patience. Where To Watch Conclave: Showtimes & Streaming Status
Image
Ralph Fiennes' mystery thriller has received early acclaim, and the options for where to watch Conclave change over time. The 2024 film is directed by Edward Berger, who previously helmed the Oscar-winning war film All Quiet On The Western Front, and stars Ralph Fiennes as Cardinal Thomas Lawrence. Conclave follows Lawrence as he must find the next pope, but the election process reveals a secret that he is left to figure out before appointing the pope's successor. Following a festival debut, the film became positioned as a predicted Oscars 2025 Best Picture nominee.

The initial reception to Conclave earned rave reviews out of the Telluride Film Festival in 2024, and the status quo did not change after a Toronto International Film Festival screening. With a 93% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes from the glowing critic reviews and suggestions that Ralph Fiennes will be a major contender for the Oscars 2025 Best Actor nominations, Conclave became...
