Amid Trump’s Tariffs, Support for Local Canadian Content Builds: “It’s Become Imperative”
Image
Amid a surge in Canadian nationalism after President Donald Trump sparked an escalating trade war with Canada, the Canadian entertainment industry has seen increased support for local content.

“It’s always been cool to watch Canadian films at the multiplex, but now with the developing situation in the U.S., it’s become imperative. If ever there was a time to embrace our Canadian stories and support our domestic film industry, it’s now,” Ashleigh Rains, festival director and head programmer at the Canadian Film Fest (Cff), tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Sonya Yokota William, director of Network of Independent Canadian Exhibitors, representing indie cinemas, adds that her organization is monitoring sentiment among Canadians for a possible Hollywood movie boycott. “I think it’s all been moving very fast and we still have to see how things shake out,” William says. “Cinema operators are concerned, of course, [but] at this point I...

Canadian Anthem Singer at 4 Nations Hockey Final Changes Lyric to Protest Trump’s 51st State Threat
Image
Before the puck drop at the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off championship game in Boston, multiple fights had already broken out between Team USA and Team Canada fans in the lead up over the weekend. On Thursday, the night of the final, tensions were high as singer Chantal Kreviazuk took to the ice to sing Canada’s national anthem, “O Canada.”

Perceptive listeners tuning into the game may have picked up on Kreviazuk’s key change to the lyrics. At the beginning of the anthem, instead of singing, “True patriot love, in all of us command,...

Chantal Kreviazuk Changes Canadian National Anthem Lyrics During NHL Game Against U.S.
Image
As Trump’s tariffs continue to impact foreign relations, Chantal Kreviazuk made a statement at NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off game against the United States.

The Get to You artist performed the national anthem ‘O Canada’ on Thursday’s game at Td Garden in Boston, earning boos from the audience as she took a shot at the opponent with some adjusted lyrics.

Instead of the lyric “true patriot love in all of us command,” Kreviazuk sang “that only us command,” sharing a photo to her Instagram Story of the lyric written on her hand.

At recent NHL and NBA games, Canadian fans have booed ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, as well as 10% on those from China. Trump’s announcement of tariffs was met with retaliatory measures from Canada and the promise of “tariff and non-tariff measures” from Mexico.

A Canadian music dynasty just got bigger.

Recently, Rowan Maida, the son of artists Raine Maida and Chantal Kreviazuk, who goes by the mononym rowan, dropped his debut single.

Read More: Raine Maida And Chantal Kreviazuk Put Their Marriage Under A Microscope In New Music Documentary

The song, titled “Mountains”, was released last month, and in a departure from his parents musical stylings, the song is an atmospheric, R&b-influenced bop.

“I’ve been talking to the mountains/Cause they can’t run away from me, no,” he sings on the track. “They’re confusing all that we know/What’s really going on around us.”

In 2012, when he was just 17, rowan spoke about his musical ambitions, and making sure his work as a budding artist doesn’t get stolen.

“Kids don’t realize you send one of your voice memos and someone can just go and steal that now,...

‘I’m Going to Break Your Heart’ Review: Music Duo Unfurl Their Musical Differences, and Marital Ones Too
Image
Songwriting collaborations are so often portrayed as mystical unions that those of us who aren’t in the room where it happens have to wonder if there aren’t just as many instances where oil and water refuse to mesh. At last, the testiness that can result when writing sessions go south is portrayed on screen in “I’m Going to Break Your Heart,” a documentary about singer-songwriters Raine Maida (of the group Our Lady Peace) and Chantal Kreviazuk, who comprise the duo Moon Vs Sun.

The two escape from L.A. for a songwriting retreat on the French island of Saint Pierre, only to be constantly rubbing each other the wrong way in the collaborative process. That Maida and Kreviazuk are also husband and wife does lend some extra stakes when they battle it out as co-writers: This might be the first marital-drama documentary that has, at its crux,...

Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida and singer-pianist Chantal Kreviazuk were way ahead of the pandemic when it came to testing the limits of their relationship in a confined space. The two have been married more than two decades and have three sons. Kelly Clarkson songs, ranked: Her 23 greatest hits, from ‘A Moment Like This’ to ‘Underneath the Tree’
Image
Our lives would suck without Kelly Clarkson. The pop singer known for her powerful pipes was introduced to us in the first season of “American Idol” on Fox in 2002, launching a career that spans the 21st century. She won that competition, but what are the best songs she has recorded since then? Scroll down to see how we rank her greatest hits. Do you agree with our pick for her number-one song of all time?

In the years since Clarkson’s “Idol” coronation, the show has been inconsistent in delivering artists with lasting music careers, though standouts like Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson have also stood the test of time. Clarkson was actually the first “Idol” alum to win a Grammy, claiming Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (“Since U Been Gone”) and Best Pop Album (“Breakaway”) in 2006. She also claimed Best Pop Album for “Stronger” in 2013. And that album’s...

Best TV Soundtracks: 'Dawson's Creek' Music Includes Biggest TV Theme Song
As many iTunes lovers and Youtube fanatics understand, music (old and new) has become a huge factor on hit television shows and both the show and artists featured benefit from the collaboration. Ever YouTube a certain scene from your favorite show for hours on end? Did it have a catchy song that you immediately downloaded? Yes, the odds are that you have.

Television show soundtracks are an obsession over here and the music played make that specific scene that much more memorable. Take Dawson's Creek, for example. Its theme song (and our favorite show song to date) put singer Paula Cole on the map. It also also continues to remind fans everywhere of Pacey, Joey and Dawson when the song comes on the radio. You know, the good ole' days when the kids just walked on the beach, not arguing just yet about a love triangle or who's going to...

Tiff: Arcade Fire, K'naan Remind Movie Stars About Haiti
Members of Arcade Fire brought the house -- or at least the garden party tent -- down with both their music and their message at the Artists For Peace and Justice luncheon at the University of Toronto president's estate over the weekend.

As the headliners for Saturday's 3rd annual fundraiser in support of the Artists for Peace and Justice charity - which is currently focused on aid and education for the children of Hait -- Win Butler, Regine Chassagne and Sarah Neufeld from Arcade Fire started their short acoustic set by playing right in the middle of the A-list crowd before taking the stage.

"The last time we played in a tent was in Port-Au-Prince," Butler told the enthralled audience who paid $1,250 per ticket and included the likes of Jude Law, Ian Somerhalder, Alexander Skarsgard and Alison Mosshart of The Kills and Apj founder, Oscar-winning Canadian director Paul Haggis.

"This is a lot fancier tent,...

Chad Kroeger, Avril Lavigne Started Dating On Canada Day, And Other Extremely Canadian Things About Them
Wow, these two. If Taylor Swift and Conor Kennedy are our new American royalty, Nickelback‘s Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne are the Canadian crown prince and princess respectively. They’re…they’re not actually Canadian royalty, are they? That would be too perfect. In case we didn’t already associate the musical couple with the Great White North, Chad gave an People interview today where he made sure to remind us. “We think it’s very cool that our anniversary will always be on Canada Day,” he gushed. “We can’t wait to start our life together.” It’s like if Beyonce and Jay-z got engaged on Independence Day! Then raved about it to People! Of course, the fact Avril and Chad wear their patriotism on their black, shredded t-shirt sleeves is only one example of how deeply Canadian this couple is. In case you need a few more…...

Chantal Kreviazuk at an event for Fugitive Pieces (2007)
Now the partying has begun in earnest. The Toronto International Film Festival's opening night shindig is usually a Canadian affair, full of donors and local celebs (Chantal Kreviazuk, anyone?), although the presence of half of U2 kicked things up a notch on Thursday night. But on Friday, the big boys came to down. While Sony was enjoying the gala premiere of "Moneyball," a few blocks away the Soho House was hosting a cocktail soiree for the studio's other big entry, "The Ides of March" – and any party that includes George Clooney...

David Cook: New Album, New Confidence
His gritty rock voice is what helped David Cook, 28, win season seven of American Idol. But when working on his latest, as yet untitled studio album, he learned to use that voice in a whole new way. As usual, Cook collaborated with an array of music industry veterans, from Kelly Clarkson songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk to OneRebublic vocalist Ryan Tedder. But in contrast to the "anxiety" he felt making his platinum-selling, self-titled, post-Idol album, the Missouri-bred singer told AOL's Popeater: "Sitting in the room with these people, I still managed to find my voice … really speaking up for myself and...

Miley Cyrus' Tour Bus Crash The Latest In A Sad Line Of Rock Tragedies
Early this morning, one of Miley Cyrus' tour buses crashed in rural Virginia. The vehicle was carrying several members of Cyrus' production crew but not the singer herself. The driver of the bus is dead and one of the crew members was sent to the hospital.

There are all sorts of tragedies that are inherently tied to rock music (overdoses, car crashes, production accidents and the like), but there have been far too many incidents involving tour buses. It shouldn't be shocking, as they are unruly mammoths forced to push forward (usually in the middle of the night) over all manner of terrain for hours and hours at a time. They're difficult to handle and difficult for other drivers to deal with.

Last week, Canadian singer/songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk updated her MySpace blog to let fans know that her tour bus had run off the road (she blamed the...
