Alfred Döblin
‘Berlin Alexanderplatz’: Film Review
Alfred Döblin
The twin pillars of Alfred Döblin’s epochal 480-page 1929 German-language novel and Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s deeply influential 15-hour miniseries, first broadcast in 1980, together create an overarching shadow from which Burhan Qurbani’s relatively svelte three-hour contemporary reworking of “Berlin Alexanderplatz” struggles to escape.

Although promising a deep-cut dash of contemporary topicality by reimagining the main character as an undocumented African immigrant, there is the sense that the unimpeachable craft and performances — especially from rivetingly charismatic lead Welket Bungué — ultimately add up to just too slick a package. Qurbani’s take starts off confident in the newness of its approach but soon comes to operate as a well-oiled, smoothly functioning machine for the manufacture of bad luck, fatal flaws and tragic, poetic justice. It misses out on the source material’s caustic, messy edge: the way the grime of the very Berlin streets can work itself like grit into the gears of fate.

Berlinale 2012. Haro Senft, Panorama Dokumente, Talent Campus
Another day, another trio of announcements from the Berlin International Film Festival (February 9 through 19). First off, this year's Berlinale Camera has been presented to Haro Senft, "one of the pioneers of New German Cinema as well as a tireless advocate of German children films... He was the initiator of Doc 59, a group based in Munich at the end of the 1950s; many of its members went on to sign the Oberhausen Manifesto in 1962." His 1961 documentary short Kahl was nominated for an Oscar and Bruno Ganz gave his first performance in a major role in Senft's first narrative feature, Der sanfte Lauf (1967).

"In 1971 he resigned from all his positions related to film policy and devoted himself unlike anyone else to developing a culture of children's films. DVD Review: Henry of Navarre
Henry Of Navarre (aka Henri 4)

Stars: Julien Boisselier, Joachim Król, Andreas Schmidt | Written and directed by Jo Baier

Two of the greatest perils of being a noble in the later 16th-century France were marrying into the Valois royal family and being called Henry. Henri IV, or Henry of Navarre, was in trouble on both counts. The German French-language film Henry of Navarre, aka Henri 4, directed by Jo Baier, presents the bloodthirsty tale of a king many believed to be the saviour of France. Although, judging by the amount of time he spends going from fight to fight and romping with buxom beauties, it’s surprising he had the time.

Henri 4, the Protestant Huguenot King of Navarre is married off to Margot, the daughter of Catherine de Medici who is also the mother of the king and his miscreant and conniving brothers. Catherine marks the occasion of her...
