Although there have been many great works of science fiction throughout history, many people believe that Star Trek is the greatest sci-fi series ever. Even when there is fierce competition, the Trekkies will always manage to explain why their franchise is, without a doubt, the greatest one of them all.
Of course, the franchise keeps expanding and while the main television series are not as popular as some older iterations, several projects are still ongoing or in the works. We also have the ongoing comics and the planned film series revival, which is certainly going to make a lot of fans of the franchise happy.
In light of that, we are happy to confirm that Paramount has just released the first trailer for the upcoming Michelle Yeoh-led movie (which is not going to be a part of the mainstream series that is on its way to being revived) Star Trek: Section 31,...

“Star Trek” may have been totally relegated to TV in recent years—even much more than “Star Wars,” the last movie on screen was in 2016, nine years ago—but it’s striving on TV and specifically on Paramount+ where brains trust Alex Kurtzman oversees most shows. However, in the spirit of the ever-evolving expansion, Paramount+ will debut its first movie in ages, “Star Trek: Section 31,” starring Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh.

Ever since Patrick Stewart returned to Star Trek in the late 2010s for his latest and possibly last series with the franchise, Star Trek: Picard, a lot of fans have imagined more stars coming back for similar showcases. We've heard everything from a Star Trek: Sisko series, to a Star Trek: Archer series. We've even heard of a long-running idea, a Captain Worf series, to get new traction once again under the same format that Picard introduced.
Yet, the only series that ever had legs that were pitched by fans was the Star Trek: Janeway concept, featuring Kate Mulgrew once again playing Kathryne Janeway. The fandom support for the concept predates, though barely, Mulgrew's return to Star Trek with the animated series Star Trek: Prodigy.
Since then, people have pushed for Janeway's return to live action. The support for the star's return to live-action only picked up steam when everyone saw how good Prodigy was.

Kate Mulgrew has proven that even in voice form, Admiral Kathryn Janeway remains a much-loved character with dedicated fans. Star Trek: Prodigy, Star Trek's animated series, showcases a wealth of talent, not the least of which is Mulgrew returning as a formidable higher-ranking commander than she was in Star Trek: Voyager.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that fans have been asking if she would ever do a Star Trek: Picard type of show, but Mulgrew can't really answer that as she's not sure. At FanExpo: San Francisco, she [via Collider] told the audience that Alex Kurtzman had talked to her about that type of show, and while that got fans excited, her follow-up response didn't. "Janeway is beloved... I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I can't answer quite frankly."
She went on to explain that she'd given Janeway everything she had back when Voyager was on then added,...

The makers of "Star Trek" will likely complain about the many budgetary limitations they faced while in production on their respective shows. A lot of money went into filming starship exteriors, compositing, and photographic transporter effects back in the day, which left little room for the writers to get ultra-ambitious with their stories. Sometimes an episode's filmmakers would trek out to a location shoot in the California desert, or hire a notable guest star to play a striking villain, but for the most part, "Star Trek" makers were mostly bound to the same five or six sets that they had already built on the CBS production lot. This required the show's writers to invent stories that took place in -- for "Star Trek: The Next Generation" -- a hallway, a turbolift, engineering, sickbay, the bridge, or Ten Forward.
Of course, as the old saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention.

Starfleet Academy is most likely well over a year away from making its debut on Paramount+, but the buzz around the series has been ongoing since it was announced. That only intensified with the addition of Oscar-nominee Paul Giamatti and Oscar winner Holly Hunter to the cast.
We don't know much about what Giamatti's character will be up to during his short tenure on the series' first season, but in a recent Threads selfie with Giamatti, another cast member, Robert Picardo, promised the actor's turn on the series wouldn't be something we'd forget. "He is an actor’s actor and will be memorable, I assure you, as our Season 1 super-villain on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on Paramount+… Stay tuned!" Picard wrote as a caption beneath the selfie. One of the biggest issues that the Nu Trek era of shows has had to deal with is the constant nonsense that has come with Alex Kurtzman leading the way. It seems like he wants to do everything he can with the franchise but make a good Star Trek series. Either they're too dark, stray too far from the point of the series, or are just flat-out un-Trek-like.
He seemingly got it right with Star Trek's Prodigy and Strange New Worlds but even then, they aren't perfect. Specifically Strange New Worlds, each season Kurtzman seems to let the showrunners put in some whacky nonsense that just takes the fandom out of it. Sure, it may appeal to a nice portion of the fandom, but most fans don't like the gimmicky episodes.

The next series that Star Trek has expressed interest in is the jointly-created live-action comedy from Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien. The show involves two resort workers, which some fans are speculating work on Risa, that discover their day-to-day exploits are being broadcast to an entire quadrant of the galaxy. Currently, the series has not been greenlit by Paramount, but according to Newsome, who is one of the writers, she is being told to keep writing.
In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Newsome said that "we keep writing it, and we keep turning things in, and they keep saying, 'Please keep writing.' So, as long as they allow us to do that and they don't say, 'Stop. Close your computers and go home,' we'll continue making it."

What Do We Know About the upcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy? More thank you may think. The Paramount+ original series will be the latest edition of the Star Trek universe and the first sequel series of Star Trek Discovery. With casting announcements, rumors, and more, we know a lot of what is to come. So, let’s jump in!
The series is set in the 32nd Century.
The twelfth Star Trek series since Gene Roddenberry’s original CBS show debuted in 1966, Starfleet Academy is the sixth small screen entry in the franchise since the debut of Discovery in 2017. Overseen by franchise-runner Alex Kurtzman, the new series was co-created with Noga Landau, who created the four-season-long Nancy Drew series for The CW. In development since Kurtzman’s original deal with CBS back in 2018, the series has gone through many iterations and timelines before settling on the future setting used since Discovery’s third season.

Robert Picardo is enjoying a major return to form these days. The 71-year-old actor is back with the franchise after two-plus decades away. He'll make his live-action return to the franchise with the expected 2026 debut of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, reprising his role of The Doctor, once again. It's a role that he's awfully familiar with, having played the character for nearly 200 episodes.
He appeared in 164 episodes of Star Trek: Voyager, and 17 more episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy. The latter of which was his first return to the franchise since Voyager ended in 2001. Though, with Prodigy and unlike Starfleet Academy, this wasn't live action. Instead, he returned to Star Trek to perform a voice role for the first time in years.
Prior to Prodigy, the last time he leant his voice to the franchise was for Star Trek Online in 2014.
It only goes to show you that Picardo has done...

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5, Episode 4 - "A Farewell To Farms"
Star Trek: Discovery's season one didn't earn any points with fans when it debuted its reconstructed Klingons that looked nothing like the ones we were used to seeing. And even though Mary Chieffo, who portrayed L'Rell, on Discovery said the Klingons belonged to a different, ancient sect, fans just weren't buying it because the Klingons looked like completely different aliens. Fortunately, they didn't hang around past season two, and we haven't seen them since. And it looks like it might stay that way.
In the Star Trek: Lower Decks' season five episode, "A Farewell to Arms," Chieffo returns as the Klingon K'Elarra, and the animated Klingon is as close to a Star Trek: The Next Generation Klingon as could be. [via Screenrant] Even the Klingons that Starfleet fought in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are the familiar ones we remember.

In the "Star Trek: Picard" series finale "The Last Generation", the villain was exploded and most of the heroes were rescued. Tragically, the cantankerous-but-resolute Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick) was killed on board his ship, the Titan-a, inspiring a wave of ambivalence from his first officer, Commander Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan). Seven was never respected by Captain Shaw; he felt her Borg implants made her an enemy and he would always deadname her, calling her the name she had before she was assimilated.
After Captain Shaw's death, however. Seven was put in command of the Titan-a on his posthumous recommendation (he left a recording). The ship was re-christened the Enterprise-g and "Picard" ended with a tease of a spinoff series starring Ryan. "Star Trek: Picard" showrunner Terry Matalas made no secrets that he was deliberately using the final episode to tease an additional "Star Trek" spinoff he intended to call "Star Trek: Legacy.

Tom Cruise has been a part of many franchises and has single-handedly revived the exhibition industry with Top Gun: Maverick after it received a huge blow due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, there was one franchise that seemed to be beyond saving and that was The Mummy.
Cruise starred in Universal’s reboot of The Mummy directed by Alex Kurtzman. While the intended beginning of the Dark Universe ended before it even started, a fan-made trailer for a sequel titled The Mummy: Tomb of Secrets starring Keanu Reeves has been making the rounds, reinvigorating interest in the franchise.

After spending seven years as the Emergency Medical Hologram on Star Trek: Voyager and returning for the second season on Star Trek: Prodigy as the same character, Robert Picardo is onboard a third Star Trek project. Picardo joined Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and will play The Doctor as a 900-year-old hologram. The series, which was recently picked up for a second season, will, most likely not premiere until some time in 2026.
Picardo recently appeared on a local television show in Toronto (Tvo Today: The Agenda) to discuss his upcoming journey on the new show and what viewers can expect. We also learned how his inclusion in the series came to be. [via Trekmovie]
With his character not looking that much older than what we saw on Voyager, obviously, Starfleet Academy will use de-aging technology for Picardo. Even the actor said "I don't look that much older." And even though he first...

Star Trek will soon have new owners once the merger involving Skydance is complete. Once that happens, there likely be a huge turnover in personnel across the board, and new people will be put into place to oversee new projects, films, and shows. That means that Star Trek could very possibly find themselves with a new voice.
To be clear, that's not likely to happen. It doesn't mean that it won't, however. Especially with the up-and-down reception of the Star Trek brand as of late. While Skydance owner David Ellison has had dealings with the crew who produce Star Trek, that doesn't mean that's entirely sold on them staying with the brand.
After all, Paramount+ has canceled all but two Star Trek shows due to rising costs and declining interest from the general public. That's why the new idea is to focus on just one or two shows at a...

Paramount+ unveiled a preview clip of the forthcoming third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds at New York Comic Con today, alongside the news that guest star Rhys Darby (Our Flag Means Death) would be aboard for the ride.
Based on the years Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) manned the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the CBS Studios-produced series follows the leader and his team, which features Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck), and Number One (Rebecca Romijn), in the years before Captain Kirk boarded the starship, as they explore new worlds around the galaxy.
While no release date is set, the new installment is set to debut in 2025. The series has already been renewed for a fourth season.
The three-minute clip follows the ship outmaneuvering and eventually outpacing enemy combatants. Its release follows an earlier preview shared in late July, alongside the news of Cillian O’Sullivan...

The animated “Star Trek: Lower Decks” premiered a new clip from its forthcoming final season at New York Comic Con, showcasing the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos pursuing its Season 5 mission: closing “space potholes” — and meeting alternate versions of themselves as they cross through one of those subspace rifts.
The comedic yet still in-continuity show set in the wider “Star Trek” universe features the ship’s junior officers working to stop these dimensional breaks from causing problems in the Alpha Quadrant this season. According to an official description, “Pothole duty would be easy for Jr. Officers Mariner, Boimler, Tendi and Rutherford… if they didn’t also have to deal with an Orion war, furious Klingons, diplomatic catastrophes, murder mysteries and scariest of all — their own career aspirations.”
The show teases that Season 5 could feature its lowly crew getting promoted out of the titular lower decks “into strange new Starfleet roles.

Trekkies and non-Trekkies alike know that Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) referred to the U.S.S. Enterprise's chief medical officer, Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley) as "Bones." The two characters were good friends, so it made sense that they should have nicknames for each other. Indeed, Dr. McCoy more frequently referred to Kirk as "Jim" than "Captain." Among the senior staff, non-mission-based conversations were kept casual.
Why was Dr. McCoy called "Bones?" It comes from "Old Sawbones," a nickname given to all doctors in the mid-19th century. During various wars of the era, you see, doctors were frequently called to the front to tend to wounded soldiers. In many cases, the soldiers' wounds were not being treated, and became infected with gangrene. Doctors, not having modern surgical equipment or sterilization methods, had to amputate limbs to prevent the infections from spreading. Some doctors were able to saw through a leg — no anesthesia!

Star Trek was on the verge of something unique with Noah Hawley at the helm. Originally brought in after the failings of Star Trek: Beyond, Hawley was given the reigns to create a new Star Trek film. Everything seemed to be going fine to boot, yet eventually, executives at Paramount didn't like how "original" his idea was and took the project away from him.
We're still left a little uncertain about the premise of the film, but there were rumors that it would feature a brand new cast of characters. That may have been a tough enough sell, but apparently another major obstacle for him to get past was the alleged storyline. It would feature a virus that carved it's way through the Federation.
As this was either pitched right before, during, or after the Covid-19 pandemic, that angle was always going to be a hard sell. The plot had...

Star Trek: Voyager’s Ensign Harry S. L. Kim makes a surprise return in the fifth and final season trailer for the Star Trek: Lower Decks animated series from Paramount+.

“You’re all still Ensigns?” the singled out Kim asks of his rivals. Other hijinks teased in the final season trailer include the task of closing “space potholes” in the Alpha Quadrant.

Paramount+ has debuted the trailer for the fifth and final season of the animated comedy “Star Trek: Lower Decks.” The first two episodes will premiere on Thursday Oct. 24 on the Paramount + streaming service.
The 10-episode season produced by CBS Studios will drop every Thursday from its release date through to Dec. 19.
In this season the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos must close all “space potholes,” which are subspace rifts unleashing chaos into the Alpha Quadrant. This combined with their ongoing diplomatic problems leaves them with a rather full plate as junior officers Mariner, Boimer, Tendui and Rutherford deal with: an Orion war, furious Klingons, diplomatic catastrophes, murder mysteries and their own ambitions.
The “Star Trek” franchise remains a priority at Paramount under the purview of franchise shepherd Alex Kurtzman. Even with “Lower Decks” ending, the company has the third season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” in the works,...

Star Trek has been quite different since 2017 when Star Trek: Discovery launched. Star Trek: Picard followed, along with Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and they all offered something different to fans and new viewers. Not all original Trek fans were enthused, but there is one series that has been consistently well-received, and even when cancelled by Paramount+, it found a home at the biggest streaming channel, Netflix, because of fan devotion. Here's why this is so important for the future of Star Trek.
We don't know what's around the corner. Will Alex Kurtzman continue to head up the franchise? According to the most recent deal he inked with CBS Studios in 2021 [via Deadline], he'll be leading Star Trek until 2027 or so. But that doesn't mean authority can't be handed over to someone else who maybe has a different outlook on Trek and where to go from here.

Star Trek fans are desperate for a sequel to Star Trek: Picard. There was an idea floated out there by Terry Matalas, who envisioned a new show centered around Seven of Nine and Jack Crusher, the biological son of Jean-Luc Picard. It would feature several other characters like Sidney La Forge and maybe a few other veterans of the Star Trek franchise.
In essence, it would be the first continuation of Star Trek stories since Picard and would remain one of the few shows that actually advanced the plot forward. Most shows, like Discovery, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds, all fall in between other established shows in the universe.
Yet, this sequel series, dubbed Sar Trek: Legacy, would be the furthest point in the timeline, aside from the forthcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy (and later seasons of Discovery). It would be a fun new idea that many fans are excited about.

Star Trek has not had the best go of it with Alex Kurtzman at the helm. In what can only be seen as a nepotism hire, it looked like J.J. Abrams gifted him the job following his foray into the Star Trek film franchise. Since then, Kurtzman has done a mediocre job with the franchise. The longer he goes with the franchise, the more people question his methods and motives.
In a lot of ways, his timeline with Star Trek mirrors that of his friend Greg Berlanti and Berlanti's run with the DC television properties on the CW. A series of shows dubbed "The Arrowverse". With the end of Superman and Lois this year, a lot of people were left disappointed in how a promising show like Arrow turned out to be a tragically underwhelming franchise.

No matter who you ask, most fans will tell you that they are largely unsatisfied with the direction of the Star Trek franchise. Whether they're unhappy with the direction of some shows, or the lack of sincerity in others, or even the dark tone that some writers are desperate to "explore", many fans will tell you that the franchise as a whole isn't where it should be.
That's not wholly unfair either, as it's a lack of overall interest in the Star Trek brand that saw a long-awaited show in Star Trek: Section 31, get shrunk down to a single, 90-minute film that went straight to streaming. This isn't a direct shot at the entire franchise, as shows like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds can still pull in the viewers, but they're just about the only ones.
No other show has been able to pull in viewers, routinely, across 10 weeks.

Star Trek: Picard had quite a bit of the Borg in the series, which made sense as that was one of Admiral Picard's [Patrick Stewart] worst enemies. So having him face off again against the Collective, that had turned him into Locutus, was a great part of the show. But the large showing of the Borg was originally because, before Stewart had signed on to do Picard, the show being pitched was a Borg spin-off.

Despite being one of the oldest characters in Star Trek history, Captain Christopher Pike wasn't really a compelling character until Anson Mount took the role in Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery. Even then, it has taken Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for Pike to really come into his own as a likable, inspirational lead character. Part of this is because he's not exactly like previous versions of Pike.
Captain Pike first appeared in the original Star Trek pilot episode, "The Cage." Portrayed by Jeffrey Hunter, this Pike was irritable and brooding. He was not only isolated from his crew but openly adversarial with various members. While "The Cage" is an interesting episode overall, it is reasonable to say that this Captain Pike is not really all that fun to watch.
Of course, various elements of "The Cage" got repurposed into the 2-part Original Series episode "The Menagerie." This offered a...
