The 9 Best Post-‘Scream’ Slasher Movies
Image
A couple weeks ago I completely blew somebody’s mind. We were talking about popular zombie movies and I mentioned that before Danny Boyle’s “28 Days Later” was an unexpected hit in 2002, the zombie genre was considered, ironically, kinda dead. Sure, we got a zombie movie every once in a while, but outside of the hardcore horror fanbase, the walking dead wasn’t a concept most people cared about or took very seriously. This younger person found that concept hard to fathom. They had literally never known a world when zombies weren’t popular. It just goes to show you: One hit film really can revive a whole genre, and for generations to come.

The same holds true for slasher movies. After John Carpenter’s “Halloween” defined the genre in 1978 — it’s a stretch to say Carpenter “invented it” but he certainly codified the easy-to-copy, very successful formula — slashers...

‘Jason Goes to Hell’ & ‘Jason X’ 4K Review – Evil Gets an Upgrade in Flawed But Fascinating ‘Friday the 13th’ Sequels
Image
Horror fans can be a fickle bunch, especially when it comes to nostalgic franchises. We don’t want the same story regurgitated with new characters, but straying too far from the established formula risks losing what drew fans to the property in the first place.

After churning out eight Friday the 13th movies with little deviation over the course of nine years, Paramount sold the rights to Jason Voorhees to New Line Cinema. “The House that Freddy Built” teamed with original Friday the 13th director/producer Sean S. Cunningham to revive the slasher icon with 1993’s Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday — which sidelines Jason, does not show Hell, and is not the final Friday.

The film kicks off with one of the franchise’s best prologues, condensing all the slasher tropes into a single sequence that subverts expectations by culminating in Jason being blown to smithereens by a Swat team.

Image
Last Updated on April 12, 2025

Sean S. Cunningham will always be primarily remembered for directing the original Friday the 13th, but he has taken the helm of some other movies that are worth checking out, like 1985’s The New Kids and the deep sea horror film DeepStar Six. The 1989 movie will now be getting a new 4K Blu-ray release, according to Blu-ray.com. Kino Lorber is behind this physical media distribution. The movie stars Taurean Blacque, Nancy Everhard, Greg Evigan, Miguel Ferrer, and Nia Peeples. DeepStar Six is set to hit retailers on June 17.

The description reads,

Not All Aliens Come From Space! Far below the surface of the unforgiving sea, the daring crew of DeepStar Six are explorers in a forbidding world of impenetrable darkness and unimaginable pressure. They have invaded the icy fathoms into which no human has ever ventured. Their mission is to establish a top secret Navy base on the ocean floor.

Jason Returns in Hellish 4K from Arrow Video
Image
One of the wildest, most divisive entries in the Friday the 13th franchise is being resurrected in style this spring, as Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday arrives in a feature-packed, Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD on 19 May 2025. Courtesy of a newly restored dual-cut release, fans can now revisit the gonzo ninth instalment of the series with the sharpest image and most complete behind-the-scenes archive yet.

First unleashed in 1993 and directed by Adam Marcus, Jason Goes to Hell boldly took the franchise into supernatural territory, tossing out the traditional Crystal Lake stalk-and-slash formula in favour of something far stranger. After Jason Voorhees is seemingly obliterated by a Swat-style ambush in the film’s opening minutes, his spirit lives on, possessing one unlucky soul after another in a relentless, body-swapping quest to be reborn.

The result is a slasher that plays more like a mad science fiction-horror hybrid, gleefully loaded with gore,...

Horror Legends Robert Englund and Tony Todd Battled an Evil Genie in This Wacky Horror Movie
Image
Wishmaster has everything a horror fan could want, from great practical effects to an abundance of horror cameos, all brought together by an all-timer villainous performance from Andrew Divoff as the Djinn. Conceptually, it is ripe for creativity as the titular Wishmaker has no bounds to his wish-granting abilities. This allows the movie to use practical effects to create bold and extravagant kill sequences orchestrated by director Robert Kurtzman, who has a background in special effects makeup. Wishmaster is packed full of gross, gory sequences but also has a fun interactive element of trying to decipher what the Djinn will do. It never quite achieved the status of other big horror icons such as Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger, and likely suffered from being released the year after Scream. However, it captures the fun of '80s horror, blending dark humor with disturbing visuals. And most fun of all is...

Every Quentin Tarantino Gangster Movie, Ranked
Image
The Quentin Tarantino filmography comes from many different inspirations. As an artist not bound by particular genres, he can tell a wide range of different stories and add his spin to them. It's fun to look at Tarantino's career in phases, as the filmmaker has made different kinds of genre films during different periods. For instance, his "Kurosawa phase" gave audiences Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Kill Bill: Vol. 2, while his "Leone phase" gave fans films like Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight.

Quentin Tarantino started his career with a personal favorite inspiration of his, and it can be called his "Scorsese phase," as he made films like Pulp Fiction. Taking a lot of inspiration from his own background and the films and filmmakers that inspired him has always been a key part of his process for telling stories. It also just so happens that he is, in his own right,...

In Search of Darkness 1990 – 1994 trailer: documentary series leaves the ’80s behind and dives into a new decade
Image
Over the course of three In Search of Darkness documentary films, all of which were over four hours long (with one of them nearly reaching the six hour mark), director David Weiner did an incredible job of digging into the many great (and some not-so-great) horror movies that were released in the 1980s. There were still so many movies left uncovered that Weiner could circle back and continue looking into ’80s movies for years to come – but instead, he has decided to move forward into the ’90s with the upcoming documentary In Search of Darkness: 1990 – 1994. At the time, fans considered the horror genre to be in a lull, a downswing from the heights it reached in the ’80s. But with this movie, Weiner aims to point out that we did still get a lot of good horror movies during that time period. You can get a sample of the...

Every Quentin Tarantino Movie Where His Character Dies, Ranked
Image
Whether a fan of his work or not, it's hard to deny the aptitude Quentin Tarantino has for constructing superior movies. The creative has come to be known for original narratives, high-action fight scenarios and gory death scenes that have included him more than once. Tarantino makes a cameo appearance in all his movies, though his characters don't die in ever one.

Tarantino's roles in his films never feel as if they've been shoe-horned in to give him more exposure. His acting skill fits neatly with every movie and doesn't distract audiences from the plot. His death scenes have varied from being blown up to getting infected by a vampire, and have all been an asset to his work.

Tarantino Has an Important Role in From Dusk Till Dawn

From Dusk Till Dawn is a little different from most of Tarantino's other movies as he only wrote the screenplay and didnt direct it.

Terrifying Movies That Defied Horror Tropes
Image
The final girl, jump scares, creepy kids and evil dolls...there are many tropes that fans have come to expect in horror movies. Sometimes these tropes seem like lazy, inspired clichs, but when they're used well, they can make the film even more terrifying for the audience. It's not easy to trace the origins of every horror trope, like the ominously open backdoor or the victim fleeing up the stairs instead of out the front door. It is possible, though, to pinpoint certain horror films that have gone against the grain and defied these tropes.

Scream listed some of the most common horror tropes, and reminded viewers that there are certain rules one can't break if they want to survive. The brilliant 2012 film The Cabin in the Woods also offers meta-commentary on the genre. In today's horror, many tropes are ubiquitous enough to be satirized, and filmmakers are aware enough...

In the Mouth of Madness (1994) – The Test of Time
Image
If you’ve been keeping up with The Test of Time, you have probably learned what the rules are in terms of what we tackle. Those rules, of course, are that there are no rules whatsoever and we cover whatever sounds good or we think would be an interesting topic. In the Mouth of Madness (watch it Here) came out in Italy in late 1994 and that means, gulp, that movie is now 30 years old. It came during an interesting time in the master of horrors career when he was running flop after flop and being disappointed by studios interference and stars that weren’t willing to be true collaborators. It’s the ending of a loose trilogy and in some people’s estimation his last great film. Is In the Mouth of Madness a tale that stands the Test of Time, or should it be put in the bargain bin...

Tis the season to be scary and Screambox has got you covered with a trio of brand-spanking-new Christmas-themed horror movies that go perfectly with cookies and milk in front of a warm fire.

Now streaming on Screambox from the director of Jason Goes to Hell is Secret Santa and the awesomely creepy anthology Night of the Missing.

That’s not all! Just in time for Christmas break, Santastein will make the long winter’s nights anything but silent on Dec. 19.

Since Black Christmas, holiday films have been a refreshing sub-genre within horror. These films offer a much-needed contrast to the “all is well” narrative that is so often depicted in seasonal films. The angst and anxiety of holiday horror offer a cathartic release because for many the holidays are not perfect, and we don’t see ourselves in the yuletide rom-coms.

In fact, Screambox has more than stocking stuffers, with...

Robert Kurtzman Selling Original Oil Paintings Based on ‘Wishmaster’ and ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ Concept Art
Image
Legendary makeup effects artist Robert Kurtzman (Evil Dead II, Misery, Tusk, Doctor Sleep) has in the past shared his original concept artwork for films including Wishmaster and From Dusk Till Dawn, and Bloody Disgusting has learned this week that Kurtzman has now turned that concept art into oil paintings – and he’s offering them up to horror fans!

The 18″ x 24″ oil paintings are only available online via Robert Kurtzman Mufx, and you can either purchase the original oil paintings themselves or prints of that original artwork.

The official press release details, “Robert has returned to his roots by painting original oils based on concept design sketches. During the strikes and the subsequent shut down of the film industry, Robert revisited original concept design sketches for various projects. The sketches are either by Robert himself or concept artist, and dear friend, John Bisson.

“The paintings range from old school classics Wishmaster and From Dusk Till Dawn,...

Exclusive Interview: ‘Jason Goes to Hell’ Director Adam Marcus Talks ‘Secret Santa’ and What’s Next
Image
Horror fans will recognize Adam Marcus as the director of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday and the co-writer of Texas Chainsaw 3D, two divisive but oft-discussed entries in their respective franchises. He recently returned to the genre to helm Secret Santa, a holiday horror-comedy streaming exclusively on Screambox.

The final installment in our three-part interview with the raconteur focuses on Secret Santa and the trials and tribulations of independent filmmaking. He also teases several projects that are in the works, including a monstrous collaboration with special effects legend Robert Kurtzman.

Secret Santa was born out of Marcus and his writing partner/wife Debra Sullivan’s frustration with the lack of creative control they had on their two previously produced screenplays, 2013’s Texas Chainsaw and 2015’s Momentum. “Artistically, it just started to feel really hollow. I was like, ‘Did I get into this to make money, or did I...

Make Your Wish: Robert Kurtzman’s ‘Wishmaster’ Is Just as Fun, Fearless and Frightening 26 Years Later
Image
The horror genre thrives upon cautionary tales where arrogant individuals believe that they can outsmart some supernatural force for their own gain. It’s for this reason that the greed-quenching Djinn and parables where people learn to be careful what they wish for, usually in the most morbid ways possible, are popular horror tropes. Djinn are a fascinating concept, but they’ve struggled to truly make their mark in cinema between largely-forgettable films like Jinn, The Djinn, Wish Upon, and even George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing. But Djinn stories can still be fun and effective in the right context. And Robert Kurtzman’s Wishmaster is still the premier djinn horror film over 25 years later.

Wishmaster is a movie that understands the unabashed joys of a big, dumb plot where there’s a giant magical gemstone that’s the key to the Djinn’s powers because why the hell not?...

From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
The From Dusk Till Dawn episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Eric Walkuski, Narrated and Edited by Tyler Nichols, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Okay ramblers, let’s get rambling… In the mid-90s, there were few directors more exciting than Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. Guys who clawed their ways into the movie business by sheer determination and talent, they wore their love for cinema on their sleeves and made no bones about it. They helped kickstart a wave of movie nerds who’d be calling their own shots and making millions for the studio system; suddenly it seemed like being able to endlessly quote Martin Scorsese or John Carpenter movies meant you might get a shot at sitting in the director’s chair. Naturally, the two gravitated toward each other, and to this day their...

Wishmaster (1997) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
The Wishmaster episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Horror has had many periods and the late 1990s were very much for self-referential films, dark humor, and cameos. Wishmaster, or Wes Craven’s Wishmaster (watch it Here) as it was marketed at the time, is more on the dark humor side of things than self-referential. Still, it does have plenty of cameos and references to other movies to be found by those paying attention.

While the film was marketed as Wes Craven’s Wishmaster, the film was in fact, written by Peter Adkins and directed by Robert Kurtzman, two creators the world of horror already knew. Craven was an executive producer here, but his name put butts in seats back in the day,...

6 Robert Englund Horror Movies You Can Stream on Screambox Now!
Image
Happy #RobertEnglundDay!

About one third of the 150+ acting credits accumulated over the course of Robert Englund’s 50-year career fall under the horror genre. Screambox is streaming five of them, along with the all-new documentary, Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story.

Here are six Robert Englund movies you can watch on Screambox now…

Galaxy of Terror

Before moving to Elm Street, Englund went to space for 1981’s Galaxy of Terror, the first of two back-to-back Alien knock-offs produced by Roger Corman. The film follows a ragtag spaceship crew on a rescue mission to a barren planet, where they encounter a deadly creature. In a slight twist on Ridley Scott’s sci-fi/horror classic, Galaxy of Terror uses its victims’ own fears against them — which, incidentally, is similar to Freddy’s modus operandi.

Englund plays the ship’s second technical officer, Ranger, but he’s not the only notable...

The Best 90s Slasher Films
Image
When it comes to the golden era of slasher films, most will say it was the 1980s, but the 1990s are not to be ignored as they brought us an amazing bunch of films and some that redefined the sub-genre (including one that’s getting a fifth sequel this weekend). Here’s our list of the Best 90s Slasher Films:

Wishmaster (1997)

This one is considered a fantasy slasher, so it’s a bit controversial as to if it is a slasher or not. For this list, let’s consider it one. It’s fantastic and Andrew Divoff is 98% of why it’s so good. This film is his and he makes it the best it could be. His work is both charming and menacing, giving his character an aura that makes the whole film what it is. It’s creepy, it has great kills, and the cameos in this one are to die for.

‘Bubba Ho-Tep’ 4K Review – Bruce Campbell Elvis Movie Still Works Like a Charm Twenty Years Later
Image
Elvis has a lot of buzz this awards season, but Baz Luhrmann didn’t get the story right. The real Elvis Presley traded places with an impersonator in order to live a simple life as an impersonator himself before retiring to Mud Creek, Texas alongside John F. Kennedy, who was patched up and dyed Black after the assassination attempt.

Those are the facts according to Bubba Ho-Tep, at least.

The 2002 horror-comedy is based on the short story of the same name by Joe R. Lansdale (whose work would go on to be adapted into Cold in July and Hap and Leonard), first published in the 1994 anthology The King Is Dead: Tales of Elvis Post-Mortem. When cult filmmaker Don Coscarelli approached Lansdale about optioning the story for a film, the author tried to talk him out of it, as he believed it couldn’t be made.

Lansdale passed on writing the screenplay for the same reason,...

Every Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez Movie Collaboration
Image
Quentin Tarantino has his list of frequent collaborators, but his most notable one behind the scenes is fellow filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, and here’s every project they have worked on together. Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez have made a name for themselves in the film industry thanks to their unique visual and narrative styles, and their friendship is one of the most well-known in the industry as well, even more as it has led to them working together on some interesting projects.

Tarantino and Rodriguez met in 1992 at the Toronto Film Festival as they were both attending thanks to their most recent projects: Reservoir Dogs and El Mariachi. Rodriguez told EW in 2006 that they later found they had offices next to each other and started hanging out, and they would read stuff from their next projects to each other. Since then, Tarantino and Rodriguez have collaborated on different projects and...

Ari Aster And Freddy Krueger Are Both On Justin Long's Horror Bucket List
Image
"Barbarian" is a movie teeming with nasty twists. Zach Cregger's slow-burning tale is one of the best horror movies this year; it induces palpitations and anxiety and fear that is so inherently relatable — because this isn't a movie where characters are making bad decisions just to further the plot. You can understand why they're choosing to do what they're doing. "Barbarian" stars Georgina Campbell as Tess, a woman traveling to Detroit for a job interview, who books a rental home on Airbnb and discovers the house is double booked.

When you throw in a normal-seeming Bill Skarsgård, a monster who lives in the basement, a hilarious Justin Long, and twist after twist, "Barbarian" truly becomes the stuff of nightmares. Justin Long is the movie's comedic relief. He's a man dealing with a career-ending accusation and is seen desperately measuring the undiscovered basement of his house so he may sell it at a higher price.
