- Poet, satirist, screenwriter and author of children's books, the son of a saddle maker. His best-known works were the oft-filmed "Emil and the Detectives" and "The Parent Trap".
- Served in an artillery company in World War I. His experiences during that time made him a staunch pacifist for the rest of his life.
- German poet and writer, not to be mixed with his name-twin Erich Kaestner (1911-2005) the award-winning camera design pioneer.
- Gained a doctorate in German history and literature from the University of Leipzig in 1925. He helped finance his studies by part-time work as a journalist and drama critic for the "Neue Leipziger Zeitung".
