This year marks the 47th anniversary of the release of director John Carpenter‘s 1978 masterpiece Halloween (watch that Here), and fan Billy Kirkus – who shared some behind-the-scenes Panaglide test footage from the making of the film way back in 2013 – has revealed that he has just unearthed a whole lot more test footage!
Kirkus wrote on Facebook, “You know, I get asked all the time about test footage from 1978’s Halloween. I knew there was a bunch of stuff in there but, I didn’t know exactly much. Thanks to my friend Jim, he trekked to the vault and got me some photos I needed. As Jim pointed out, this footage isn’t scene specific… so, these spools are tests of some sort. Los Angeles is less a city and more like a sprawling suburb. Outside of downtown and the wretched stretch of hell known as Hollywood Boulevard, the city is essentially a collection of smaller neighborhood villages, all of which are simultaneously unique while remaining distinctly L.A. But there's something different about South Pasadena. Situated just six miles from downtown, this city within the bounds of Los Angeles County feels like a quintessential middle American small town, complete with a humble main street, local library, and tree-lined streets that contain some of the most picturesque suburban homes you're ever likely to see — and chances are you have seen them. Even the most casual movie fan will, at one time, have seen South Pasadena on-screen, whether they realize it or not.
The city is a go-to destination for productions looking for that small-town feel. South Pasadena has played host to some truly...

Who doesn’t love John Carpenter’s Halloween? It’s one of the greatest horror films of all time. We have Halloween to thank for the slasher boom of the ‘80s. The flick was a resounding success that resonated with critics and fans in equal measure. Not to mention, it also inspired future generations of filmmakers. Speaking of filmmakers upon whom the film imprinted in a meaningful way, Guillermo del Toro counts himself a massive fan of this beloved feature.
The Pacific Rim director once took to Twitter (I still refuse to call it X) to proclaim his undying appreciation for the flick. His tweet reads: “Halloween by John Carpenter. A genre supernova. Creates a taxonomic category that still lives. Unsparing precision, simplicity and elegance.”
Mr. del Toro said it far better than I could. Halloween is a benchmark of genre filmmaking to which all subsequent slashers will be compared,...

Horror films of any era often reflect the collective anxieties of people born in and living during that era. Be it the quality of visual effects, or the inaccessibility of the idea in later years, many horror films feel dated years down the line. However, the best horror movies from the 1980s, for example, not only reflect the collective anxiety over home invasions and losing autonomy over the body, but they're so timeless that some of them turned into franchises, while others inspired similar films for years afterward.
While a list of the best Korean horror movies can include entries from the past twenty years, the best Indian horror movies even include a film each from the '40s and the '60s. This demonstrates how vast the range of timelessness can be, depending on the cultural context of a horror film. Some anxieties are universal to the human experience,...

Jamie Lee Curtis, the actor known for her roles in True Lies, Trading Places and Everything Everywhere All at Once, celebrates the role that shot her into Hollywood stardom way back in the late 1970s. Curtis gave life to what remains one of her most iconic roles, that of Laurie Strode in John Carpenters slasher classic, Halloween. A role she has reprised as recently as 2022. In honor of spooky season, the actor took to Instagram to celebrate the spooky season and her legacy as the ultimate final girl.
In Halloween, Curtis plays babysitter Laurie Strode, a shy and introverted teenager living in Haddonfield, Illinois. On the night of Halloween, while Laurie is taking care of kids Tommy and Lindsey, and while her friends are misbehaving, the slasher killer Michael Myers comes home. 15 years ago, a then six-year-old Michael savagely stabbed his sister to death, and never spoke a word again.

John Carpenters Halloween was first released to theaters in October 1978 and quickly became a classic. For almost 46 years, Halloween has been the ultimate Halloween horror movie and is considered by many to be the start of the modern slasher movement. Boasting a highly memorable and foreboding killer in the form of the mysterious Michael Myers, a young but no less talented Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, and an incredible team behind the camera, this film has long been considered one of the essential slasher films by horror fans.

Michael Myers, the slasher killer from the Halloween franchise, received a makeover for an appearance on Saturday Night Live. While we're used to his raspy breathing while he walks toward his victims, this version was more interested in striking some poses and show some dance moves, rather than brutally killing babysitters.
The latest Saturday Night Live episode featured a segment called "Horror Choreographer," in which the director, played by Andrew Dismukes, discusses how they're about to shoot the most important scene in the fictional horror sequel, "Halloween Rises." The setup of the scene is very familiar to horror fans, with two teens sitting on a couch, and Michael lurking outside the window. However, it doesn't exactly follow the vibe of John Carpenter's classic.
Michael slides the doors and begins moving and grooving into the room, leading to the scene being halted and the "stunt movement coordinator" being called to the set.

The most iconic horror movie duos prove that terrifying movies don't need an ensemble cast of survivors to make an impact. At the start of the first era of Hollywood horror movies, the focus was mostly on the monsters whether Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, or the Wolf-Man, the victims were never as important. However, in later years especially when the slasher genre grew in popularity in the 1970s and '80s the final girl and hapless teenagers made the story almost as much about the victims as the killers, even if it was just to see how they died.

Considering the long span of the Halloween franchise, knowing who plays Michael Myers is tough, especially with more than one person often playing the slasher killer in each movie. Most of the scenes in the original 1978 Halloween film saw Michael hiding in the shadows before he finally launched his attack on Laurie Strode and her friends. As a result, multiple people filled Michael's shoes for the movie. Throughout the years, there have been 13 movies featuring Michael Myers.
As the franchise rolled on, the masked killer took a more prominent role and a few actors became well-known for portraying the man referred to in the Halloween scripts as The Shape. These movies included the original timeline, an alternate timeline where Laurie died and her daughter Jamie Lloyd became the Final Girl, another where Laurie lived and Michael kept trying to kill her, yet another with Rob Zombie's reboot, and finally...

John Carpenter's influence on the horror genre is matched by few, and there is a good reason why his name is held in such high regard. Carpenter essentially created the modern slasher genre with Halloween; he was not the first, but he established the rules that many still go by to this day. Halloween brought horror to suburbia, challenged conventional norms of the genre, and created a minimalist masterpiece that terrified and obsessed a whole generation of horror movie fans.
There are countless iconic scenes in the movie; from the opening of a young Micheal Meyers making his first kill to Annie's death at the hands of the masked killer. However, there is one scene in particular that draws influence from a true crime case that shocked the United States; the murder of Kitty Genovese.

While he wears a mask in the Halloween franchise, there have been a few instances when Michael Myers' face was revealed. Halloween is one of the most successful franchises in the horror genre, and while it has gone through different retcons over the years, the most recent one a reboot trilogy, it continues to be quite popular with the audience, and Michael Myers reign of horror in Haddonfield, Illinois always finds a way to continue. However, with all the changes made to the franchise over the years, Michael Myers' face has looked different each time it was revealed.
The Halloween franchise began in 1978 with John Carpenters Halloween, which introduced the audience to Michael Myers. Although Michael has remained the antagonist through all the retcons and remakes in the Halloween franchise, he has also gone through a handful of changes: Michael Myers iconic mask has changed through the years, different actors have portrayed the famous slasher,...

Halloween, directed by John Carpenter, is a pivotal horror film that elevated the genre when it premiered in 1978. The horror movie has the perfect blend of creeping dread, a spooky season aesthetic, a relatable final girl in Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), and one of the best scores ever put to film. Michael Myers (Nick Castle) is the quintessential boogeyman, stalking around the quaint town of Haddonfield in his stolen coveralls and creepy William Shatner mask. Every element of the movie comes together to create a scary classic that will forever be celebrated by moviegoers.
Character/victim Lynda (P.J. Soles) offers the best word to describe Halloween. It "totally" captivates the audience and keeps them on the edges of their seats throughout its tight 91-minute runtime. Some viewers are die-hard fans of the movie, to the point where they can almost quote it by heart and know all the behind-the-scenes stories.

Has the Season of the Witch returned, in terms of unconscionable decision-making regarding the Shape? Well, at the very least, Titus Peoples and Nigel Harden are threatening to repeat history where the Halloween franchise is concerned. The two creatives neither have any connection to the series Miramax is developing, for the record are collaborating on a spec script they hope will become a prequel series to the immensely popular horror franchise.
However, their proposed pitch, titled Loomis, revolves around the character of Dr. Sam Loomis before he ever encounters the homicidal Michael Myers, aka the Shape, in 1963. So, just as the disastrous Halloween III: Season of the Witch did back in 1982, the series wouldn't include the Shape. Peoples updated the proposals status on Facebook as follows:

Michael Myers is heading to a gaming console near you, as its been announced that there are not one, but two video games based on John Carpenters Halloween in the works from Boss Team Games. The best part? The legendary director himself is involved in the project. The one and only video game based off of Carpenters 1978 groundbreaking slasher movie came in 1983 for the Atari 2600, and while characters from the film have been featured in other franchises such as Dead by Daylight, there has never been a true standalone game in more than 40 years.

As a glimpse into a horrifying world where tormented souls continually gave into their darkest impulses, following the stories of deranged killers allowed viewers to experience these chilling, consistent murderers from the safe distance of a fictional narrative. While they have not been real criminals, the effective performances of these killers meant their names were forever entrenched in popular culture.

John Carpenter, one of the most important horror film directors of all time, has responded to a controversial social media post about his 1978 film Halloween. Using his own X/Twitter account, Carpenter was "kind" enough to set the record straight on a whole new cut of Halloween that audiences supposedly haven't seen. Per Carpenter's own words: "There is no different version of Halloween where Michael dies. This is total bullsh*t!"
Carpenter was referring to a tweet by @horrormuseum, in which it's stated that there's a version of the 1978 horror classic that no one has ever seen. Supposedly, the film is 95% different, and in the ending, Michael Myers dies. The source is cited as "a friend who worked on the Blu-ray restoration," so it's not very trustworthy,as Carptenter has brutally proven.

Michael Myers of the "Halloween" franchise is the go-to example for a faceless slasher villain. In director John Carpenter's original 1978 picture, actor Nick Castle is credited not as playing "Michael Myers" but as "The Shape" — Michael is an extension of the shadows, stretching out to kill on pure instinct before receding back into the darkness where he belongs.
In that original "Halloween," five people are murdered by the Shape:
Michael's older sister Judith (Sandy Johnson) in the movie's opening flashback.
The offscreen Christopher Hastings, who Michael kills to steal clothes after he escapes the sanitarium.
Teenager babysitter Annie Brackett (Nancy Kyes), who has her throat garrotted and cut.
Bob Simms (John Michael Graham), who is dressed as a ghost for the holiday.
Lynda Van Der Klok (P.J. Soles), Bob's girlfriend who Michael ambushes by wearing his ghost costume.
Michael is a dispassionate killer; he slices Annie's neck with a quick strike,...

Miramax's Head of Worldwide Television, Marc Helwig, reveals the Halloween television series will be a "creative reset" of the horror franchise. John Carpenter's seminal 1978 film, Halloween, will be the foundation for the Miramax show. The Halloween series is a "big priority" for Miramax, according to Helwig.
“The night he came home” will be completely “reset” from a creative standpoint when the Halloween franchise eventually makes its television debut. The Head of Worldwide Television at Miramax, Marc Helwig, recently offered an update on the future of the Halloween TV show, while appearing on the red carpet at the global premiere of Netflix’s The Gentlemen series. Helwig said (per Deadline):
“The foundation of it is the original film, the John Carpenter movie, the characters of that film, and perhaps a group of characters that we haven’t really focused on that much in recent film versions or even in a number of them.

Miramax's Head Of Worldwide Television, Marc Helwig, says they are on a fast track to lock down the creative team for the upcoming Halloween show. Helwig says the show is a creative reset, going back to the original film and potentially exploring characters not focused on in recent movies. The show has the potential to expand into a wider cinematic universe, building on the foundation of the John Carpenter classic movie.
The in-development Halloween TV show has received a major update. The Halloween slasher franchise began in 1978 with the original John Carpenter classic of the same name and has since expanded to include 13 movies in total. While 2022's Halloween Ends was purported to be the end of the years-long battle of wills between former babysitter Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her serial killer brother Michael Myers, in October 2023 it was announced that Trancas and Miramax were partnering on...

"Halloween Kills" might be one of the weaker installments in the long-running "Halloween" franchise, but one of its stars is anything but. The new book "Halloween: The Official Making of Halloween, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends" includes a whole bunch of great behind-the-scenes stories about the new trilogy's production, including one about "Halloween Kills" actor Kyle Richards. Richards, a former child actress who is perhaps now best known as a castmate on "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," played Michael Myers survivor Lindsey in the recent David Gordon Green movie (a role she originated in the 1978 classic), and apparently went above and beyond when it came to the film's stunt scenes.
In one scene, according to Abbie Bernstein's book, Richards was tasked with smacking the seemingly invincible killer known as The Shape with a sack of foam meant to be a stand-in for a bag of bricks. The foam...

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we revisit the high water mark for one-location thrillers: the central siege in John Carpenter's 1976 classic "Assault on Precinct 13.")
There's a hypothetical version of "Assault on Precinct 13" out there that does away with the restraint and foreboding atmosphere of the original, recklessly tossed out in favor of high-wire thrills and a never-ending collection of narrative tropes. In place of a handful of straightforward (yet effective) archetypes thrown together as strangers but who come out as something else altogether after the crucible of one endlessly violent night, someone might've had the inclination to try and "humanize" these characters by burdening them with edgy backstories or an overcomplicated plot. In essence, imagine stripping away all the idiosyncrasy and personality just to end up with another generic action/thriller.

Ask your friends what the singular most essential Christmas movie is, and you will get a different answer from everyone: Miracle on 34th Street, Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Carol, Scrooged, etc. Ask what is the most important movie set on October 31, and there is only one answer: Halloween. You might have a tradition of watching it every October. Its score, by director John Carpenter, is the soundtrack of All Hallows’ Eve. Halloween exists in a dual state of haunting gothic and nostalgia. It is the past that we are accentuating in turning the color off on the television, turning down the brightness, and turning the contrast up.
We watch black and white horror movies that have always existed in black-and-white with full awareness that we are seeking something vaporous that is lost in color movies, which we cannot name. It is this same unnamed country that we are searching for...

Warning: This post contains Major spoilers for Scream 6
Scream 6 has multiple killers, but not every clue was obvious in revealing their identities. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, Scream 6 went for the jugular. After the events of 2022’s Scream, Sam Carpenter had a target on her back thanks to online conspiracists accusing her of being the real Ghostface killer who murdered Richie. The truth is far more gruesome and twisted than that.
Scream 6 included five different Ghostface killers, all of whom ultimately had the same goal. Jason and Greg wanted to kill Sam out of revenge, but their plans were thwarted by the Ghostface masterminds of Scream 6 — Detective Bailey, Quinn, and Ethan, Richie's remaining family, Sam’s deceased boyfriend and one of two Ghostface killers from Scream 2022. This Scream 6 article contains spoilers.
There are certain rules that one must abide by in order to successfully make a Scream movie. For instance, number one: you must involve Sidney Prescott. No Sidney equals box office death, okay? Number two: you must always have two killers who are connected to Sidney or her mother Maureen Prescott. The sin factor! It’s a sin. It’s an extension of number one. And number three: never, ever, ever under any circumstances say, “I know who the killer is.” Because you won’t be right.
By this point, the rules that Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) lays out for slasher movies (using Halloween as a target text) can be applied to the Scream franchise itself. Six movies in, the series has established a vernacular so clear that, even after Wes Craven‘s passing, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett can take over for Scream 2022...

We’re getting the week started with a new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and in this one we’re looking back at an early film from one our of legendary “masters of horror”: John Carpenter. Played by comedian Jamie Kennedy, film geek Randy Meeks in "Scream" and " Scream 2" is probably the most relatable character in the entire franchise. He's always the fifth wheel and probably spent more lonely nights at home watching horror movies than he'd care to admit. Perpetually single, Randy lived vicariously through the popular kids at Woodsboro High. He watched Sidney and Billy take their PG-13 relationship into R-rated territory (big mistake!), and stood idly by as Stu and Tatum bickered and flirted with each other. Randy was the class clown and the horror movie expert, so naturally, Tatum thinks he's actually Ghostface moments before her death (when it's actually Billy Loomis).
Like a lot of us, Randy learned about life through movies. Just as he watched the characters on screen behaving in predictable, formulaic ways, he also noticed how cliché and stereotypical the people in his own life were acting.

The trailer for Scream 6 has made way for a variety of theories on who is behind the Ghostface mask this time, and some of them continue to link the killer to Scream’s Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard). The Scream franchise continues riding the wave of reboots/requels with its sixth installment, simply titled Scream 6, which will take the survivors of the latest Woodsboro murders to New York City. However, Scream 6 won’t count on the presence of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), but it will welcome back legacy characters Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere).
Scream 6, then, will see Sam (Melissa Barrera), Tara (Jenna Ortega), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy-Brown), and Chad (Mason Gooding) moving to New York City to start a new chapter, but as they struggle to cope with the trauma (especially Tara), they will be haunted by a new Ghostface killer. The new...

The first trailer for Scream 6 made some big story reveals, including that the new Ghostface killer(s) has a shrine with lots of objects related to the past Ghostface killings – and here’s what can be seen in it. Following the success of Scream (2022), the franchise continues riding the wave of reboots and “requels” and is now preparing for the release of Scream 6. This new story is doing things differently by taking the characters to New York City, and it’s the first one without the franchise’s Final Girl, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), leading the story.
Scream 6, then, follows the survivors of the latest Ghostface killings in Woodsboro – Sam (Melissa Barrera), Tara (Jenna Ortega), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy-Brown), and Chad (Mason Gooding) – as the move to New York City to start a new chapter, but they still won’t be able to escape from a new Ghostface killer.

“I’m something different.” So says Ghostface to Gale Weathers in the new trailer for Scream VI, reinforcing the “New York. New rules.” tagline. And while that may be true, there’s certainly no shortage of references to the past. Earlier this month, a 4K restoration of director John Carpenter‘s 1976 action thriller classic Assault on Precinct 13 played at the Globe Cinema in Calgary for three days. Now the 4K restoration is set to reach more theatres across the U.S. and Canada, rolling out over the next two months! The American Genre Film Archive is responsible for this 4K theatrical re-release, and the company’s theatrical director Bret Berg had this to say about it: “It’s an honor to represent Carpenter’s legacy, given how much personal joy his work has created for us. When it’s something as iconic as Precinct 13 – akin to the heartstopping majesty of Halloween – we’re driven to get this taut masterwork in front of as many audiences as we can. Big thanks to the Ckk Corporation for shepherding this new restoration.”

Yesterday, January 16th, was the 75th birthday of legendary filmmaker John Carpenter, and a lot of fans made sure to watch some of Carpenter’s movies to celebrate. During the festivities, I also happened to stumble across video of an old interview with Carpenter, one that was conducted on the set of the 1978 classic Halloween (watch that Here) to be aired as an episode of Arena Cinema that was broadcast on BBC2 in early ’79.
