Nothing destroys a film's momentum quite like bombing at the box office. While poorly received movies can still be successful should they gross a lot of money, even the most critically acclaimed film is considered a failure if it fails to make its money back upon release. Walt Disney's entertainment juggernaut is all too familiar with financially destitute films, as not every picture can be a winner.
Most know Walt Disney Studios for its load of successful Marvel, animated, and Star Wars movies, Disney's films are all over the list of the worst box office bombs of all time as well. From the well-known to the more forgotten, Disney has made its mark in the annals of most successful and least successful films. But some flopped so badly as to be considered the very bottom of the bottom.

The first, called Game of Pets, will debut in the fall of 2026. Macmillan and Foundation Media Partners plan to develop and produce it as a feature film franchise.
Blabey’s The Bad Guys series and Thelma The Unicorn were adapted for film by, respectively, DreamWorks Animation and Netflix. Blabey served as executive producer on both.
Universal Pictures and Dwa are releasing The Bad Guys 2, a sequel to the $250 million-grossing 2022 hit, later this year. It follows a crackerjack criminal crew of animal outlaws, struggling to find acceptance in their newly minted lives as Good Guys, who are pulled out of retirement and forced to do one last job. Netflix aired animated prequel The Bad Guys: A Very Bad Holiday Christmas special in 2023.

When I saw the trailer for Skeleton Crew, my first thought when I saw the sprawling suburban environment was that this was not the Star Wars I know and love. In fact, the images drew an immediate link to Madeleine L'Engle's novel A Wrinkle in Time. Within that franchise, there is a city without individuality or creativity that bears some resemblance to Wim's neighborhood. Although the show looked fun, I wondered whether the personality of Star Wars could survive in such a place.
I figured the purpose of this safe, modern town was to draw contrast to the grungy, pirate-infested worlds the children would encounter later. Of course, this is partially true. However, upon viewing the first episode, I was struck by how well the Star Wars aesthetic was still able to thrive within more sterile environments.
This isn't the first time Star Wars has explored cleaner worlds. Leia...

As is tradition, Netflix has dropped a teaser for the upcoming new season of Stranger Things, revealing the titles for the next batch of episodes. Watch it above!
As for those episode titles, they are:
“The Crawl”“The Vanishing Of…”“The Turnbow Trap”“Sorcerer”“Shock Jock”“Escape From Camazotz”“The Bridge”“The Rightside Up”
The next season of Stranger Things, the show's fifth, is also its last. What do these titles tell us about the final visit to Hawkins, Indiana? Sleuths on Reddit are already coming up with theories.
"The Crawl": We've known about this title for a while. My best guess is that it's a play on the idea of a dungeon crawl, games of Dungeons & Dragons having been important to the characters on Stranger Things for years. If you'll remember, the fourth season ended with the ooky-spooky Upside Down dimension leaking into our reality, so real...

Netflix has officially announced that the fifth and final season of Stranger Things will premiere in 2025.
This confirmation was made on November 6, 2024, during the annual Stranger Things Day commemorating the in-universe date when Will Byers vanished into the Upside Down.
In celebration of this announcement, Netflix released a teaser video unveiling the titles of the upcoming season’s eight episodes: The Crawl, The Vanishing of…, The Turnbow Trap, Sorcerer, Shock Jock, Escape From Camazotz, The Bridge, and The Rightside Up.
Notably, the second episode’s title, The Vanishing of…, is partially redacted, evoking the series’ inaugural episode, The Vanishing of Will Byers.
This has led to speculation about which character might disappear in the final season.
The final episode, titled The Rightside Up, appears to be a deliberate inversion of the Season 1 finale, The Upside Down, suggesting a potential resolution to the series’ central conflict.
In the fall of 1987, one last adventure begins.

The fifth and final season of “Stranger Things” will debut in 2025, Netflix announced on Wednesday. To celebrate Nov. 6, 1983, a.k.a. “Stranger Things Day” — the day Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) was abducted into the Upside Down — the streamer also released a video revealing the titles for the final eight episodes, which will conclude the supernatural story of Hawkins, Indiana.
The episode titles are “The Crawl,” “The Vanishing of…,” “The Turnbow Trap,” “Sorcerer,” “Shock Jock,” “Escape From Camazotz,” “The Bridge,” and “The Rightside Up.”
Some of these titles allude to earlier episodes: “The Vanishing of…” — revealed with the name fully obscured — invokes the series premiere “The Vanishing of Will Byers.” Fans online have already speculated that the new abductee could be Holly Wheeler, the younger sister of Mike (Finn Wolfhard) who was reportedly recast with “Evil Dead Rise” actor Nell Fisher, but Netflix has not officially confirmed.

Under Childhood is a monthly column on children’s cinema—movies about and for kids.Above: Trolls World TourIn a period otherwise marked by release delays and cancellations, budget cuts and cinema closures, animated children’s films continue to find success on VOD platforms during the Covid-19 pandemic, a trend owed to an increased demand for home entertainment during lockdown and children’s access to screen time. How such titles have responded to and fared during the pandemic has become central to planning out the next months and years of industry-wide trial and error, which we can observe from the ongoing debates surrounding theatrical windows, streaming-first models, and other questions of exclusivity. In April, as cinemas closed worldwide, Universal canceled its theatrical release of Trolls World Tour, and instead made the film available as a digital rental. After the success of her documentary “13th” and miniseries “When They See Us,” Ava DuVernay has set her first feature film at Netflix.
The Oscar-nominated filmmaker will write, direct and produce the feature adaptation of Isabel Wilkerson’s critically-acclaimed novel “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.”
The film adaptation, titled “Caste,” will use a multiple-story structure to examine the “unspoken system that has shaped America and chronicles how our lives today are defined by a hierarchy of human divisions dating back generations.” The novel, published in August 2020 by Pulitzer Prize winner Wilkerson, was a New York Times best-seller and an Oprah’s Book Club selection.
DuVernay will produce ‘Caste’ alongside Array Filmworks’ Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes. Netflix executive Tendo Nagenda will partner with DuVernay for the project, after previously working together on Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” the filmmaker’s 2018 adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic tale.

Storm Reid wants her acting roles to be "progressive," and that's why she recognizes that people felt "uncomfortable" about her casting in A Wrinkle in Time three years ago. The actress reflected on the backlash she received after taking on the role of Meg in the 2018 film adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's 1962 book, A Wrinkle in Time. "Some people had problems with me playing Meg because they'd loved her as a Caucasian girl for so long," she told InStyle on Thursday, Oct. 8. "They were uncomfortable to have that shift, but the only way to create change in our world is through people willing to be uncomfortable." But Reid is...

Madeleine L’Engle once wrote: “Truth is what is true, and it’s not necessarily factual. Truth and fact are not the same thing.” It’s a quote I return to often while thinking about Netflix’s stellar limited series “Unbelievable” for a variety of reasons, but never so much as when mulling over how the series managed to take inspiration from real events to create something even greater than the sum of its parts. It takes something factual and makes it true.
For Susannah Grant, who served as co-creator, writer, and director on “Unbelievable,” the process of adapting “An Unbelievable Story of Rape,” originally published by ProPublica and The Marshall Project, was all about being more faithful to the truth than the facts. “You’re going for the authenticity of someone’s experience,” Grant said in a phone interview with IndieWire, “And you obviously can’t incorporate every life moment that added up to that,...

Filmmakers walk a fine line when tackling a film adaptation of beloved work of fiction. If it is too much like the book, those who are unfamiliar risk being alienated, but if you stray too far from the source material, you run the risk of polarizing hardcore fans. This is especially true when you are tackling a particularly tough storyline that has been adapted (rather unsuccessfully) in the past.

If it is too much like the book, those who are unfamiliar risk being alienated, but if you stray too far from the source material, you run the risk of polarizing hardcore fans. This is especially true when you are tackling a particularly tough storyline that has been adapted (rather unsuccessfully) in the past.

Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time was unable to top Black Panther after opening to a muted $33.3 million from 3,980 theaters in North America over the weekend.
Both Black Panther and A Wrinkle in Time — the latter based on Madeleine L'Engle's beloved book and targeting young girls — have been heralded for their diversity, both in front of and behind the camera.
For Disney, the weekend was a double-edged sword, since it is home to both films. Wrinkle in Time, which cost $103 million to make before marketing, is the first major miss domestically for the studio since...

Ryan Coogler's Black Panther is one of the highest grossing movies of all time, a feat that it accomplished in almost exactly one month. The movie features a predominantly black cast and has become a worldwide cultural phenomenon, making Coogler one of the most in-demand directors in the business. Black Panther is seeing its first competition at the box office since it opened with Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time and Coogler has written a tribute to the female director who he affectionately calls his big sister.
Ava DuVernay is probably best known for Selma, the biopic of Doctor Martin Luther King, but she is quickly becoming a household name because of her talents. She is also known for her Netflix documentary 13, which delves into the American prison system and racial inequality. And now, she's battling Black Panther, a movie which she originally turned down, with A Wrinkle in Time.

Ava DuVernay’s “A Wrinkle in Time” grossed $1.3 million at the Thursday box office.
When tracking for the adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s sci-fi novel first came out three weeks ago, opening weekend estimates were set at approximately $35 million against a production budget of at least $103 million, according to California Film Commission reports.
The closest competition for “Wrinkle in Time” would be Disney’s 2015 flop “Tomorrowland,” which opened to $33 million and ended up making $209.1 million against a $190 million budget before marketing costs. That film grossed $725,000 from a limited run in 701 U.S. theaters. “Alice Through the Looking...

Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time — based on Madeleine L'Engle's beloved book and targeting younger girls — is off to a troubled start at the North American box office.
Hobbled by poor word of mouth, the fantasy-adventure grossed $10.2 million on Friday from 3,980 theaters for a weekend debut of $32 million-$33 million, well behind expectations. Wrinkle in Time has been rebuffed by most critics, while audiences gave it a mediocre B CinemaScore.

Pick a woman, any woman, who was involved with bringing A Wrinkle in Time to the big screen this year, and you find either someone whose reputation precedes her or who is positively brimming with potential. And that was pretty much the idea. From Madeleine L'Engle, author of the award-winning 1962 novel, to the film's director Ava DuVernay, who's become one of the most influential voices in Hollywood, the project's pedigree couldn't be more impressive. Storm Reid, only 14 and on her way to being a huge star. Mindy Kaling, Omg. Reese Witherspoon, always a force. Oprah Winfrey. Drop the mic. The story, which famously begins on "a dark and stormy night,"...

It remains to be seen whether A Wrinkle in Time — based on Madeleine L'Engle's beloved book — can beat Black Panther at the North American box office this weekend in what's shaping up to be a Disney vs. Disney showdown.
Ava DuVernay directed A Wrinkle in Time, becoming the first African-American woman to helm a $100 million Hollywood event film. Tracking suggests the family-friendly movie, which hopes to appeal in particular to tweens and teenagers, will open in the $35 million-$40 million range, a relatively muted start for a marquee Disney title.

There’s so much to like about Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time. It’s the rare family adventure movie with a young African-American girl in the lead role. It puts a premium on diversity. It’s unafraid to earnestly proclaim that love can drive out darkness. And yet it also carries the burdens of trying to turn its source material, Madeleine L'Engle 1962 award-winning novel, into a regular feature. The result is a film that always feels like it’s taking two steps back for every step forward. For every moment of colorful …...

Admirably ambitious, Ava DuVernay's adaptation of a beloved literary classic gently yet firmly asserts its independence from expectations. First published in 1962, Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time won a Newbery Medal and other awards. Its popularity with children has endured over the decades, as it's remained continuously in print, selling millions of copies worldwide. (When I worked at a used book store a few years ago, it was the #1 most requested title for young people.) The novel is a beautifully written tale that is told with building suspense, and is quite moving. The film's initial setup is very similar to the novel. Young Meg Murry (Storm Reid) is having trouble at school. Her father (Chris Pine), a scientist, mysteriously disappeared four years before,...

Only the faintest glimmers of genuine, earned emotion pierce through the layers of intense calculation that encumber Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time. Disney's lavish adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's fantastical 1962 book (there were four sequels) about a girl's journey through multiple dimensions to find her long-missing father may provide enough distractions to keep kids in the lowest double-digits age range interested. All the same, DuVernay's first big-budget studio extravaganza after breaking through with Selma and the great documentary 13th feels cobbled together with many diverse parts rather that coalesced into an engaging whole. Even if this is widely consumed...

Ava DuVernay's adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time is a colossal disappointment. The classic science fiction novel by Madeleine L'Engle has been turned into a sappy melodrama; utterly devoid of mystery or wonder. DuVernay's approach to the story is to emphasize its outcast element. The result is a fire hose of gushing positive reinforcement for the bullied, angst ridden protagonist. It reminded me of Al Franken's famous SNL skit, "Daily Affirmations with Stuart Smalley"; where he sits in front of a mirror saying, "You're good enough, you're smart enough, and doggone it, people like me". A Wrinkle in Time is essentially two hours of that, with Oprah Winfrey and special effects.
Storm Reid stars as Meg Murry, an awkward teenager who is constantly bullied at school. The source for her sorrow is the mysterious disappearance of her father (Chris Pine). He and her mother (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) were Nasa...

Amazon Studios has released a final trailer for their raucous comedy Gringo, featuring new footage with stars Charlize Theron, Joel Edgerton and David Oyelowo. Unlike Netflix original movies, which almost always eschew any type of theatrical release, Amazon Studios' movies are most often given theatrical releases, before arriving on the Amazon Prime video streaming service at a later date, which will likely be the case with Gringo. Unlike Amazon Studios' awards-season films like Manchester-By-The-Sea and The Big Sick, Gringo is most certainly not "Oscar bait," but this R-rated comedy may certainly find a welcoming audience.
An exhilarating mix of dark comedy, white-knuckle action and dramatic intrigue, Gringo joyrides into Mexico, where mild-mannered businessman Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo) finds himself at the mercy of his back-stabbing business colleagues back home, local drug lords and a morally conflicted black-ops mercenary. Crossing the line from law-abiding citizen to wanted criminal, Harold battles to...

Walt Disney Studios Canada has released a third trailer for A Wrinkle in Time, which features the new song "Scars to Your Beautiful" by popular Canadian singer Alessia Cara, which will be featured on A Wrinkle in Time soundtrack. This trailer kicks off with new footage of lead character Meg Murry, played by Storm Reid, who is told by Principal Jenkins (Andre Holland) that she can't keep using her father Dr. Alex Murry's (Chris Pine) disappearance as an excuse to act out. We also get more footage from the Murry home, with Meg asking her mother Dr. Kate Murry (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) if her father is really gone, while another scene shows where the title comes from.
Before his disappearance, Dr. Alex Murry believed that we could in fact travel through the universe instantaneously, with one of Meg's friends Calvin (Levi Miller) asking about her father's work, and if his theory...

Ava DuVernay didn't read Madeleine L'Engle's 1962 novel A Wrinkle in Time as a young girl. But, when she agreed to direct the $100 million movie for Disney, she had some stipulations. Chief among them: The director wanted to hire a diverse cast of characters. "I wasn't just casting for actresses," she says in the current issue of Time. "I was casting for leaders—icons." And did she ever. Mindy Kaling, Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon were cast as Mrs. Who, Mrs. Which and Mrs. Whatsit, respectively, while Rowan Blanchard, Zach Galifianakis, André Holland, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Deric McCabe, Levi Miller, Michael Peña and Chris Pine round out the star-studded cast.
