John Wick Fans Need To Watch This Genre-Defining Crime Action Movie
Image
Nobody does it like John Woo. Calling Woo a pioneering force that helped shape Hollywood action movies would be an understatement, as his influence runs deeper than one might imagine. It wouldn't be farfetched to call Woo's brand of cinematic violence poetic, where he revitalizes the mundane with slick gusto — whether it's when a hail of bullets pierces through shattered glass, or time slows down to highlight something impossibly cool.

Ever since Woo found mainstream success with 1986's "A Better Tomorrow," he has been experimenting with the action genre and how it expresses stylized violence in passionate bursts. That film brought together American gangster cinema and Hong Kong martial arts flicks in ways never done before, and once Woo cemented his status as one of the masters of the genre, countless action flicks (including "The Matrix") mimicked Woo's aesthetic time and again. More recent genre entries, like Chad Stahelski's...

‘Cesium Fallout’ Review: Andy Lau & Karen Mok Lead Bombastic Hong Kong Disaster Flick That Teases At A Satirical Hunger Beneath Its Brash Exterior
Image
Touted as Hong Kong’s first radiation-disaster blockbuster, Anthony Pun’s Cesium Fallout chronicles the political and frontline responses to a national catastrophe as it unfolds on the outskirts of the city. Emulating the blockbusters of Irwin Allen and Roland Emmerich, the rampant urban destruction is complemented by a star-studded ensemble of some of the local industry’s most prominent talent. Andy Lau takes top billing as the scientist drafted to advise Karen Mok’s bullheaded politician when a fire breaks out in a landfill site riddled with illegal radioactive waste. As the leadership bickers over the appropriate response and who is to be reprimanded, it falls to the blue collar heroes of the Hong Kong Fire Services Department to tackle the inferno head on.

Yu Bai and Louise Wong are among the heroes in helmets putting their lives on the line for the sake of seven million innocent souls,...

Hard-hitting thriller In Broad Daylight released in UK cinemas
Image
Central City Media is proud to release the hard-hitting drama In Broad Daylight, inspired by shocking real events, in UK cinemas.

In Broad Daylight reveals a little-known truth about residential care homes for the disabled that hides beneath the headlines. Written and directed by Lawrence Kwan Chun Kan, the film recalls the likes of Spotlight and The Post, where dogged and fearless journalists uncover alarming levels of rampant abuse and corruption.

Jennifer Yu (Sisterhood) stars as Kay, a young journalist who is told by a jaded veteran colleague that their work doesn’t make any difference – and sets out to prove him wrong. The cast also includes Bowie Lam (Hard Boiled) and Rachel Leung (A Light Never Goes Out).

Nominated for Best Film and Best Director at the Shanghai International Film Festival, as well as receiving five nominations at the Golden Horse Film Festival in Taiwan, In Broad Daylight is...

In Broad Daylight review – Hong Kong newsroom drama shines light on care home scandal
Jennifer Yu
Lawrence Kwan’s film makes some insightful points about journalism while letting in a few cliches too

Here’s a solid newsroom drama inspired by a string of real-life scandals involving abuse at care homes for elderly and vulnerable people in Hong Kong. It’s a film with a fair few clunking journalism cliches, and it never quite builds momentum. But the performances are uniformly intelligent and committed, and it has some real insights too; there’s the moral outrage a reporter feels as the penny drops, and she realises that people in positions of power already know about cruelty and neglect in homes. They just haven’t had an incentive to care.

Jennifer Yu is Kay, the star investigative reporter of a Hong Kong newspaper, semi-disillusioned by the job. After a tip off, Kay goes undercover at an understaffed, overcrowded care home, pretending to be the granddaughter of an...

Film Review: In Broad Daylight (2023) by Lawrence Kan
Image
It seems that the 2018 movie “Distinction” by Jevons Au, has created some ripples to the Hong Kong movie industry, with a number of titles that focus on similar issues being presented this year. “In Broad Daylight” inspired by true events regarding the local health system and particularly the treatment of the elderly, is definitely one of those.

In Broad Daylight is screening at Five Flavours

Kay is a tough and harsh investigative reporter, who, after a tip about the residents of an elderly care home being abused by the staff, decides to go undercover in the facility, posing as the granddaughter of one of them, and see the truth for herself. Even though her methods are not legitimate, her research brings to the fore a series of shocking facts about the local healthcare system, which is as corrupt as it is ineffective. In her effort to shed light to what is happening though,...

Dante Lam’s The Sniper: UK DVD review
Director: Dante Lam. Review: Adam Wing. If you look back at Dante Lam’s career you’re sure to discover a fine body of work. Beast Cops is an obvious standout, but lets not forget The Beast Stalker, The Stool Pigeon and even The Twins Effect; well I liked it anyway. The Sniper (the literal translation is Godly Gunslingers) finally hit theatres in 2009, sandwiched between the quite awesome The Beast Stalker and the almost as awesome The Stool Pigeon. It’s not as good as either of those films but considering the turbulent journey it took on its way to the big screen, I’m surprised there’s enjoyment to be had at all. The Sniper revolves around the Godly gunslingers of the Hong Kong Police Force’s Special Duties Unit (Sdu). Richie Jen (Exiled) takes on (and takes off his shirt) Huang Xiaoming (Royal Tramp), two deadly sharpshooters on opposite sides of the law.
