‘Cruel Summer’: Season 3 in Development with Olivia Holt Returning — Everything We Know
Image

The show was canceled in December 2023 after the second season, which featured a new storyline and cast than the first season. But now, it appears to be circling back to the original Season 1 narrative, which ended with several unresolved plot threads. Here’s everything we know about Season 3 of Cruel Summer. Image
Maybe it’s not such a cruel summer after all. Variety has learned exclusively from sources that a third season of “Cruel Summer” is currently in development at Hulu and Freeform.

Olivia Holt would star in and executive produce the new season, reprising the role of Kate Wallis from Season 1 of the series. In addition, Cori Uchida and Adam Lash have boarded as showrunners and executive producers. Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple would once again executive produce via Iron Ocean. Lionsgate TV is the studio.

Reps for Disney declined to comment.

“Cruel Summer” was originally created by Bert V. Royal. The series debuted on Freeform in 2021 and quickly became the most-watched show in the network’s history. Final Destination 3 Almost Broke Its Biggest Rule & That One Ending Could’ve Changed The Franchise Forever!
Image
How One Twist In Final Destination 3 Could Have Changed The Franchise! (Photo Credit – Prime Video)

Spoiler Alert: The following article discusses major plot points from Final Destination 3 and Final Destination: Bloodlines.

Final Destination 3 nearly threw fans a curveball that could’ve flipped the franchise on its head. While the third installment stuck close to the deadly blueprint, vision, escape, then Death playing catch-up, it almost took a sharp left turn right at the end.

Instead of leaving us with that subway crash tease, the original ending would’ve dropped a bombshell: cameos from two Final Destination 2 survivors, Kimberly (Aj Cook) and Officer Burke (Michael Landes). So, what went wrong? According to producer Craig Perry (per Digital Spy), they had the plan in place. They even wrote it out, and one of the two actors was ready to go

But the other wasn’t available, and they...

15 Best Movie Death Scenes Of All Time, Ranked
Image
Death is inevitable, but few are happy to welcome it. The topic brings with it existential dread, if not terror, and thousands of years of philosophical and theological discussion, all to try and cope with that final frontier. While some learn to approach the end with acceptance, even peace, it's seldom easy. And so, death in media becomes another tool by which we can confront this universal experience by whistling past the cemetery, if nothing else.

Dying in a movie can be a moment of tragedy. Done well, it can also be a black, vivacious laugh. Sometimes it's bathos: anticlimactic, like that bit in James Cameron's "Titanic" where some poor dude thunks off the sinking ship's propeller. It's a horrible laugh, but darn if it doesn't ease the sorrow. In honor of that guy, we're going down the list of 15 of the best cinematic deaths ever. It should be...

'That Is Not Canon': Final Destination Bloodlines Finally Ends Longtime Fan Debate After 19 Years
Image
Final Destination Bloodlines brings back the cult classic horror franchise 14 years after the previous installment. It also settled a longtime fan debate that's been going on for almost 20 years.

In 2006, Final Destination 3 came with an interactive game on DVD titled "Choose Their Fate," which allowed fans to make different changes to the characters. It also featured a newspaper that seemingly revealed the fates of Final Destination 2 characters Kimberly Corman (Aj Cook) and Thomas Burke (Michael Landes), who were the only ones that escaped, revealing how they died. Final Destination Bloodlines finally settled the longtime debate, and franchise producer Craig Perry confirmed to Deadline that the newspaper article was not canon.

In Final Destination Bloodlines, which features a series of Easter eggs for the franchise as a whole, William Bludworth confirms Kimberly and Thomas have successfully cheated death by dying and coming back to life, hinting that the two...

Final Destination: Bloodlines (2025)
The Opening Accidents: The Most Important Part of Final Destination?
Final Destination: Bloodlines (2025)
Last year, Final Destination 6 (which is going by the title Final Destination: Bloodlines) finally, after years of development and a long year gap between sequels, made its way through production. Now, just in time to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of the original film, the new sequel has arrived in theatres – and JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols is marking the occasion by taking a look back at what makes the franchise what it is: the opening accidents. Because it’s hard to get on a plane, ride a rollercoaster, or drive down a highway without thinking of them. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above.

Directed by David R. Ellis from a screenplay by J. Mackye Gruber and Eric Bress, Final Destination 2 has the following synopsis: Kimberly has a premonition of a horrible highway accident killing multiple people — including her and her friends.

Every Character Who Has Survived The Final Destination Movies
Image
This article contains spoilers for every "Final Destination" movie.

For over 25 years, the "Final Destination" series has instilled a very special fear of death with audiences. Everyone meets their end at some point or another, but these movies take perverse pleasure in showing all of the grisly manners it can manifest. Unlike other horror franchises like "Friday the 13th" or "Scream," where you can physically see the killer coming toward you, in the world of "Final Destination," Death can take the form of just about anything. All it takes is a loose screw, a curling iron, or a creep with a box full of hook hands to get the ball rolling.

It's very fitting for a franchise about a deadly omniscient presence to make you anxious of your surroundings at all times. But try as they might, the characters in every "Final Destination" usually meet a grisly end one way or another.

Somewhere between light and shadow, justice and obscuration, a forgotten police procedural remains underrated 24 years later. Police dramas have always been a staple of television, drawing audiences into the suspense as they play armchair detectives. Whether following an eccentric supersleuth, a mismatched duo, or a team of young investigators, it is usually the mystery that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. But what about the mysteries that defy natural history books, the things that lurk in the shadows beyond human understanding? Enter Special Unit 2, a paranormal procedural with more revelations than just what goes bump in the night, one that speaks volumes about the landscape of cop shows, supernatural serials, and early 2000s television.

The Nastiest Death in Final Destination Still Makes us Steer Clear Every Time We See a Loaded Truck
Image
Nothing quite speaks horror like the 2000s film series, Final Destination. With errant vehicles barreling down the streets, water dripping on live wires and electronic gadgets, and pointy things lying all around ready to impale the next victim, the horror franchise embodied death like no other slasher could before.

Final Destination [Credit: New Line Cinema]

Even so, the film series has managed to introduce new and inventive ways to subvert the viewer’s expectations, leaving the scene littered with false clues and misdirections, only to kill off the next victim in the most shocking, random, and unforeseen manner.

A quarter of a century later, Final Destination still manages to haunt an entire generation of fans paralyzed with a deeply rooted, subconscious fear of everyday objects that can render us dead in a matter of moments with a single misstep.

The Wonder Years Star Offers New Perspective for Critics of Controversial Series Finale 31 Years Later
Image
The classic coming-of-age series The Wonder Years did not end without controversy, as the show did not conclude with a romantic ending for Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage) and Winnie Cooper (Danica McKellar). However, 31 years after the finale, McKellar herself is hinting that fans shouldn't necessarily give up on shipping Kevin and Winnie.

Originally on the air between 1988 and 1993, The Wonder Years was set during the late 1960s and early 1970s. It centered on Kevin during his formative years growing up as a high school student while Winnie was his on-again, off-again childhood girlfriend. The series finale featured a narration from the older Kevin (Daniel Stern) revealing that Kevin and Winnie wound up marrying other people when they became adults, though the two remained friends. On a recent episode of the Pod Meets World podcast (per Variety), McKellar appeared as a guest and addressed how the series finale disappointed fans who'd...

The Only Two Survivors Of The Final Destination Franchise (So Far)
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag. Final Destination franchise: only 2 survivors so far, Kimberly and Thomas, beating Death's plans. Characters in the movies have low odds against Death, despite premonition sequences. Final Destination 6 may bring back legacy characters Kimberly and Thomas, despite off-screen deaths.

The Final Destination franchise insists one can't cheat Death, and to that end, there have only ever been two Final Destination survivors so far. The Final Destination movies see human beings trying to fight against such a force and they obviously have very low odds of winning. The only edge the characters have is the opening premonition sequences, in which the main protagonist experiences a terrifying vision of some kind of mass casualty event.

Audiences return to these movies again and again not for the intricate plots, but for the exceedingly gory and creative methods that Death employs to kill those who escape their intended fate.

The True Story Behind Arthur the King, Explained
Image
Featuring a bond between a man and a stray dog, Arthur the King tells a heartwarming true story of resilience and companionship. Based on Mikael Lindnord's real-life experience, the film emphasizes the strong connection humans can have with their canine companions. Despite some controversy over the film's setting, Arthur the King is expected to resonate with audiences and tug at their heartstrings.

Any filmmakers looking to guarantee themselves a hit should try this one simple step: just put a dog in it. Feature films depicting that special bond with man's best friend almost always resonate with empathetic moviegoers. Extra points if the human and dog overcome some adversity or obstacle together. Even more extra points if that story is based on true events. This is where Arthur the King comes in.

Produced by and starring Mark Wahlberg, it tells the story of the captain of a racing team who...

Arthur the King Review | A Solid but Often Cheesy True Story Adventure
Image
Arthur the King is a wholesome, tear-jerking adventure film that showcases the unbreakable bond between a racer and his furry companion. Don't be fooled by the cheesy trailer; while it certainly relies on melodramatic 'dog movie' tropes, it's not as cheesy as it could be. While not groundbreaking, the movie provides a feel-good experience perfect for families and fans of canine companions on the big screen.

In our recent interview with Oscar-nominated actor Mark Wahlberg, he dubbed his new project Arthur the King a "big, four-quadrant movie." There is certainly a case to be made for said claim, and don't be surprised if Arthur the King makes at least an adequate profit at the box office. After all, the previous Wahlberg collaboration with director Simon Cellan Jones, aka The Family Plan, shattered Apple TV+ streaming records. The two actually teamed up for Arthur the King first, an entirely different kind...

Cruel Summer Creator Bert V. Royal Departs Freeform Drama
Lexi Underwood and Sadie Stanley in Cruel Summer (2021)
The creator of Cruel Summer is stepping away.

Per Deadline, Bert V. Royal is no longer involved in the young-skewing drama.

Royal is said to have left after the pilot amid disagreements with a Freeform exec.

No details have been revealed beyond that, but it's unclear whether the disagreements were about the show's creative vision.

In the entertainment industry, creative differences are not uncommon.

Cruel Summer is a psychological thriller that follows two young women: Kate Wallis, the popular girl with a charmed life who one day goes missing, and Jeanette Turner, the nerdy wannabe who is accused of being connected to Kate's disappearance.

All signs point to Jeanette's guilt, but is Kate really who she seems to be?

Set over three summers and told through shifting points of view, the series challenges perception and follows how one girl can go from being a sweet outlier to the most despised person in America.

Cruel Summer, which is the most-watched series ever for Freeform, has been renewed for a second season.

The “easy” decision comes ahead of the season one finale, tonight, Tuesday June 15.

However, how the Jessica Biel-exec produced series returns is still up in the air; the mystery could return with a new story with the same characters and actors or using the same storytelling device featuring a whole new cast of characters.

The series, which was the first scripted series to debut under new Freeform President Tara Duncan, who started the job just under a year ago, became the Disney-owned network’s most-watched series ever, ranking as the number one new cable drama of the year among women aged 18-34, with the most recent episode delivering the drama’s biggest linear TV audience yet, rising by 31% over its premiere.
