Interview: Co-Writer/Director Aaron B. Koontz on Dealing with Tornadoes, Snakes, and More for The Pale Door
Image
Just two months ago, the horror anthology Scare Package premiered on Shudder, which was spearheaded by Aaron B. Koontz (and it involved a handful of other talented filmmakers as well) and Cameron Burns. Now, the duo is back with yet another genre offering, The Pale Door, which pits a group of cowboys against a coven of witches.

Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Koontz about his latest film, and he discussed how Keith Lansdale got involved in the project, the immense challenges they faced during production on The Pale Door, and how Koontz was able to pull together a murderers’ row of talent in front of the screen for the horror Western.

The Pale Door will be in theaters this weekend and will also be available to stream on VOD and Digital platforms as well, courtesy of Rlje Films/Shudder, followed by a Blu-ray, DVD, VOD, and...

The Pale Door Trailer Traps Old West Outlaws in a Witches Brothel
Image
Rlje Films has released a new trailer for The Pale Door. This is the latest from filmmaker Aaron B. Koontz. This time, Koontz has decided to play a genre mash-up game, blending two tried and true genres, horror and western, into something that appears to be wholly unique.

At first glance, when the trailer kicks off, it's pure western. A band of robbers is violently robbing a train. It's something we've seen time and time again over the years in the genre. Things quickly get strange when the criminals find some unexpected cargo aboard the locomotive. This cargo leads to the promise of a handsome reward. But the juice is not worth the squeeze as the group is met with a surprising and bloody welcome upon delivery. It turns into a violent, witch-filled spectacle that calls to mind From Dusk Till Dawn.

The cast includes Devin Druid, Zachary Knighton, Bill Sage,...

Creepshow Comes Back from the Grave
Alec Bojalad Sep 16, 2019

Shudder's Creepshow reboot is bringing the '80s horror anthology back to life and the set has the bloodstains to prove it.

On the calendar behind Greg Nicotero’s desk, every day, from Jan. 7, 2019 through to today, March 28, is marked with a red “X.” The lines are big and emphatic, as though the writer put every last bit of his energy into striking them.

“It seems like yesterday was January 7th and now it's the end of March,” Nicotero says, sinking into a chair in front of the calendar. “There's been no time to even pick anything up.”

Production happens in a near constant state on the Creepshow set and the chaos on the cavernous Atlanta soundstage reflects it. Outside of Nicotero’s office, hallways are littered with rubber monsters and gory props. Two lifeless Nazi soldier dolls greet the production staff arriving on set, one bald and scarred,...

Tom Savini to Direct an Episode of Shudder’s Creepshow Series, Casting Update Announced
One of the many reasons George A. Romero's Creepshow continues to thrill and chill horror fans more than 35 years after its initial release is thanks to the makeup effects by Tom Savini (who also played one of the movie's garbagemen in the memorable wraparound segment). It's fitting, then, that Savini has been announced as the director of one of the episodes of Shudder's new Creepshow series, based on a story by Joe Hill, who played Billy in the film's wraparound segment.

Savini will direct an episode adaptation of Joe Hill's "By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain," working from a screenplay by Jason Ciaramella.

Along with Savini's return to the Creepshow franchise, Shudder also announced a casting update for the series, revealing that David Arquette, Tricia Helfer, and Dana Gould have joined the cast. Read the official press release below for more information, and stay tuned to Daily Dead...

Cowboys Will Battle Witches in an Upcoming Horror-Western Film Called The Pale Door
If you’re a fan of horror and western films, there’s a great sounding film coming that combines the two genres. It’s called The Pale Door and I love the concept!

The story follows “a gang of cowboys and a mysterious woman who seek shelter in a seemingly uninhabited ghost town after a disastrous train robbery. Seeking help for their wounded leader they are surprised to stumble upon a welcoming brothel in the town’s square but soon discover that the town is home to a coven of witches and blood-thirsty wolves.”

This sounds like a film that I would really enjoy. I love these kinds of stories and this could be a ton of fun. The movie has an ensemble cast that includes 13 Reasons Why star Devin Druid, Zachary Knighton (The Hitcher), Melora Walters (Magnolia), Bill Sage (We Are What We Are), Pat Healy (The Innkeepers), Stan Shaw (Rocky), Natasha Bassett,...

’13 Reasons Why’ Star Devin Druid Leads Cast In Horror-Western ‘The Pale Door’, Shoot Under Way In Oklahoma
Devin Druid
Exclusive: 13 Reasons Why star Devin Druid has been set to lead cast in horror-western The Pale Door, which is executive-produced by Cold In July novelist and co-producer Joe R. Lansdale. Production is under way in Oklahoma on the feature, which is repped for world sales by Amp International.

Author Lansdale is also a creative and script consultant on the film from writer-director Aaron B. Koontz (Camera Obscura). Pic follows a gang of cowboys and a mysterious woman who seek shelter in a seemingly uninhabited ghost town after a disastrous train robbery. Seeking help for their wounded leader they are surprised to stumble upon a welcoming brothel in the town’s square but soon discover that the town is home to a coven of witches and blood-thirsty wolves.

The ensemble cast includes Zachary Knighton (The Hitcher), Melora Walters (Magnolia), Bill Sage (We Are What We Are), Pat Healy (The Innkeepers), Stan Shaw (Rocky), Natasha Bassett, Noah Segan (Looper) and Tina Parker (Better Call Saul).

Script comes from Keith Lansdale, Cameron Burns and Koontz. Producers are Ashleigh Snead, Matthew Thomas, and Roman Dent, and Koontz and Burns for Paper Street Pictures. James Norrie and Inderpal Singh are also producing for Amp. David Guglielmo is casting director.

Director Koontz said, “I love the idea of mixing these two disparate worlds of horror and western, and to do so with the help of Joe and Keith Lansdale, feels like the perfect devil’s playground. It’s 3:10 To Yuma meets The Descent, but doused, and then set on fire with psychological horror. Once this gets going, it’s relentless.”

Amp’s Norrie commented, “Buyers are looking for high concept genre projects that stand out from the crowd. This is a film about cowboys battling witches. With rabid wolves and unholy ravens. The response from the market has been electric and we couldn’t be more excited to be involved.”

Druid was a breakout star in Netflix’s controversial hit 13 Reasons Why and will be returning as a key figure for season three as well as starring with Tom Hanks in upcoming historical-drama Greyhound. Knighton is a co-lead on Magnum P.I. for CBS.

Walters is a regular on the Hulu show Pen15 and Noah Segan will be seen in Rian Johnson’s upcoming crime caper Knives Out. Bill Sage can next be seen in sci-fi thriller The Wave.

Tom Savini Directed an Episode of Creepshow Described as a Mix of Stand By Me, The Fog, and Jurassic Park
Horror movie icon Tom Savini recently revealed that he directed an episode of Greg Nicotero’s Creepshow horror anthology series.
