15 Great Horror Movies That Were Never Released In Theaters
Image
While it can be a special experience to witness a truly terrifying horror movie in theaters, there were several fantastic scary movies that never made it to the big screen. While the advent of the internet means many horror movies come straight to streaming, there were also plenty of excellent straight-to-dvd or even straight-to-vhs horror movies from years gone by. These often low-budget releases didnt have to pander to box office expectations and, in some cases, were able to be more ambitious and unique as a result.

Some of the best non-theatrically released movies were in the horror genre, as incredible horror movies were often produced with very little funding or support from major studios. In some cases, direct-to-video sequels even outdid their theatrical predecessors and gained cult followings among horror fans in the years since their release. These incredible non-theatrical horror movies proved that filmmakers dont need to get...

Harland Williams, Spencer Grammer, Harry Lennix Lead Voice Cast for Animated Sci-Fi Movie ‘Isla Monstro’ (Exclusive)
Image
Spencer Grammer, Harland Williams, Will Friedle, Harry Lennix, Juliana Harkavy and John Dimaggio are among the performers comprising the ensemble voice cast of the animated sci-fi comedy movie Isla Monstro.

Hailing from multimedia company Abyssmal Entertainment, the feature has completed production and launches promotion at San Diego Comic-Con with a booth and a panel taking place Saturday. The project is directed and animated by Steven Shea (Surviving Supercon), who co-wrote the script with James Schrader, and it is currently seeking distribution.

Isla Monstro centers on ne’er-do-well Duke (voiced by Schrader), who falls off a cruise ship and awakens on an abandoned, top secret government island that is rampant with mutants and monsters left over from a failed “super soldier” mission from the 1980s. Duke concocts a scheme to convert the island into a high-class resort getaway with the creatures serving as staff, which does not please the U.S. government.

Frightfest 2020: ‘Sky Sharks’ Review
Image
Stars: Barbara Nedeljakova, Eva Habermann, Thomas Morris, Tony Todd, Dave Sheridan, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Amanda Bearse, Naomi Grossman, Robert Lasardo, Mick Garris, Lar Park-Lincoln, Noush Skaugen, Lynn Lowry, Asami, J. Larose, Nick Principe | Written by Marc Fehse, Carsten Fehse, A.D. Morel | Directed by Marc Fehse

Deep in the ice of the antarctic, a team of geologists uncover an old nazi laboratory still intact where dark experiments had occured. In order to conquer the world, the Nazis created modified sharks who were able to fly and whose riders are genetically mutated, undead super-humans. A miltary task force called “Project: Dead Flesh” – reanimated US soldiers who fell in Vietnam – is put together to prevent world downfall.

Part Sharknado, part Iron Sky, Marc Fehse’s Sky Sharks is, technically, one of those so-bad-its-good film – only this one, unlike others of its ilk, has been made to be that way, created to be as cheesy,...

Super Crazy Trailer for 'Extreme Haunt' Horror Indie Film 'Extremity'
"A mind is a terrible thing to break." Dread Central Presents has released the official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Extremity, the latest feature from director Anthony Diblasi. Extremity plays with the popular modern horror concept of "extreme haunts", or experiences horror fans can pay for that put them in horrific, torturous situations. The plot follows a young woman obsessed with horror who subjects herself to hours of grueling torment inside an extreme haunt in an attempt to confront her fears and conquer the tragic past that haunts her. Starring Dana Christina, J. Larose, Cam Damage, September D'Angelo, Felissa Rose, Tiffany Shepis, Chad Rook, Michael St. Michaels, Natalie Victoria, and Ricky Dean Logan. I wasn't even sure if I should post this, but it just looks so crazy with some seriously freaky imagery, I couldn't help it. You hve to see all this for yourself. Here's the first...

Laff 2016 Interview: Darren Lynn Bousman on Making Impossible Movies and the Long Journey of Abattoir
Premiering tonight at the 2016 Los Angeles Film Festival is Darren Lynn Bousman’s Abattoir, a neo-noir-infused horror film that follows a reporter (Jessica Lowndes) investigating a mysterious man by the name of Jebediah Crone (Dayton Callie), who collects the rooms of violent crime scenes as part of his plan to build a home based entirely upon murder. Abattoir also co-stars Lin Shaye, Joe Anderson, J. Larose, and Michael Paré.

Daily Dead recently had the chance to speak with Bousman about his return to horror for his latest film, why he thrives on making “un-makeable” films, and the long journey of Abattoir from page to screen.

[Writer’s Note: Full disclosure, my significant other (and sometimes contributor to Daily Dead) edited Abattoir, so while we will not be reviewing it, we thought an interview with Bousman would be an appropriate way to give Daily Dead readers insights into the film.]

Let’s start at the beginning and talk about the evolution of Abattoir from the graphic novel to the feature film version. This has been a long time coming.

Darren Lynn Bousman: Yeah, this is the longest I’ve ever been involved with a...

‘Last Shift’ Review
Stars: Juliana Harkavy, Joshua Mikel, J. Larose, Natalie Victoria, Sarah Sculco, Kathryn Kilger, Mary Lankford Poiley | Written and Directed by Anthony Diblasi

Horror is at its best when there isn’t a focus on over doing special effects to try to shock the audience. If a film can make use of its location, add in some lighting and create a feeling of claustrophobia then it can create scares better than any computer can. This is the strength of Last Shift.

Jessica Loren’s (Juliana Harkavy) first shit as a police officer is to stay in a closing police station alone until the hazmat team to come pick-up some bio-hazardous waste still left in the armoury. Meant to be the only person left in the station it’s not long before she finds herself haunted by both the living and the dead.

Last Shift is smart because it builds atmosphere before the horror is brought in.

Magnolia Home Entertainment & Magnet Releasing just sent over the details about the new film, Last Shift, which looks like John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 (or Rio Bravo) mixed in with a Charles Manson-esque led Satanic Cult. The second Cthulhu figure in a three-part series from Warpo will be available this fall. Also: a trailer for The Inhabitants, first details on IFC Midnight's acquisition of Cabin Fever, El Rey Network's Stephen King marathon, and Last Shift on Blu-ray.

Warpo's Cthulhu Figure Series: Press Release: "Chicago, Il (September 9, 2015): Warpo, creators of the Legends of Cthulhu action figures, today released part two of three of Cthulhu: The Great Old One, their retro commercial series for the forthcoming 12” Cthulhu figure.

In keeping with the company’s method manufacturing, the process of development by which Team Warpo creates everything with the mindset and methods of the late 1970s to mid-1980s, the commercial series was created with the look and feel of being an “uploaded artifact” from the era – a rip from an old VHS tape that was used over and over again to capture storylines for the sandbox adventures of childhood.

Frightfest 2015: ‘Wind Walkers’ Review
Stars: Zane Holtz, Glen Powell, Kiowa Gordon, Philip Burke, Johnny Sequoyah, J. Larose, Rudy Youngblood, Castille Landon, Christopher Kriesa | Written and Directed by Russell Friedenberg

From the films from actor/writer/director Russell Friedenberg that I have seen, it seems – at least to me – like he has a fascination with three things: Native American culture; the human psyche and the personal demons we all have; and the idea of the stranger among us (even if that “stranger” is familiar to us). With Wind Walkers he combines all three subjects in a story that follows group of friends and family as they descend into the Everglades swamplands for their annual hunting trip, only to discover that they are the ones being hunted by a malevolent entity tracking them through the Everglades…

Now the idea of supernatural spirits is nothing new in Native American culture, or in horror movies. However Friedenberg poses...

Darren Lynn Bousman Says Abattoir Is Like “Seven Meets Dark City Meets Hellraiser”
It’s been a long and arduous journey for Darren Lynn Bousman’s Nola-based comic book adaptation, Abattoir. While I was talking to the Saw alumn last week though, he revealed that his haunted house movie had numerous false starts that kept pushing back each hopeful start date, but when shooting finally wrapped about nine months ago, more than jubilation was felt. In the words of Bousman, he felt “vindicated.” Not only had initial production been completed, but he was happy with the final result.

Abattoir still has a long road ahead, though. While chatting with the director during his press rounds for Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival, I asked why we still haven’t seen any footage from the film besides an early-stages sales trailer. According to Bousman, the visual effects work has been more time consuming than anyone could have predicted, and his ambitious strive for perfection has...

Exclusive: Darren Lynn Bousman & Terrance Zdunich Talk Alleluia! The Devil’S Carnival
It's war between heaven and hell in Alleluia! The Devil's Carnival, making its world premiere tonight at Hollywood's Egyptian Theatre ahead of its upcoming Us tour. We recently caught up with director Darren Lynn Bousman and writer/actor Terrance Zdunich (who plays Lucifer) to talk about the highly anticipated musical film follow-up to 2012's The Devil's Carnival.

On the decision to have heaven as the setting of the sequel:

Darren Lynn Bousman: We always knew that Devil’s Carnival was about more than just the carnival. When we did part one, heaven is only glimpsed at for a few seconds. And we knew that the next one that we did, we had to give heaven the same amount of time we gave hell.

After Devil’s Carnival 1 was completed, Terrance and I started talking about what would heaven look like and what could we do to make the audience excited to see heaven.

This is followed by the world premiere of Anthony Diblasi’s demonic horror Last Shift, which had to be dropped from the August line-up because of altered release and completion dates as did the next film – the highly anticipated sequel The Pact II, which has its UK premiere. The Devil’s Carnival 2 Officially Begins Production, And Will Most Certainly Hassle The Hoff! [Updated]
If you were as big a fan of Darren Lynn Bousman and Terrance Zdunich’s musical horror spectacle The Devil’s Carnival as I, you can officially start rejoicing now that production has begun on The Devil’s Carnival 2. If you can remember, a teaser trailer was released way back in 2012 that suggested the hellish carnival inhabitants would be traded for – or joined by – an equally colorful cast of heavenly bodies, and this was confirmed by TechN9ne’s angelic Librarian. Since then, there hasn’t been much movement, but if you’ve been checking up on the project’s social media channels, you’d know that Bousman’s production has officially been given the green light! Alleluia!

Along with some behind-the-scenes photos featuring returning actors like Marc Senter and Briana Evigan, it’s also been announced that David Hasselhoff has joined the cast as what I’m assuming will...

‘Devil in the Woods’ (aka The Barrens) Review
Stars: Stephen Moyer, Mia Kirshner, Allie MacDonald, Peter DaCunha, David Keeley, Erik Knudsen, J. Larose, Shamier Anderson, Max Topplin, Michael Copeman, Shawn Ashmore | Written and Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman

When I sat down to watch Devil in the Woods I suddenly had a case of déjà vu because I’ve seen this movie before. I’m confused as to why The Barrens has been released as Devil in the Woods, probably the most confusing part is I’d watched it on VOD as The Barrens in the UK. It’s only a small detail anyway, as Devil in the Woods (as I will call it for this review) is a film worth seeing.

When Richard Vinryard (Stephen Moyer) takes his family on a camping holiday looking to get away from civilisation he is less than impressed to find that the camping ground he used to visit as a child...

Synopsis

Cassadaga tells the story of Lily Morel (Kelen Coleman), a post-lingually deaf artist, who participates in a séance in the spiritualist community of Cassadaga. Cassadaga (2011)
12 Minute Making-Of Featurette For 'Cassadaga'
Cassadaga (2011)
Earlier this week, 'Cassadaga,' the new feature film from director Anthony Diblasi was released on DVD just under the radar. However, it's a new horror film that absolutely should be on your radar. Why? Not only did I name it one of my Top 10 horror films of 2013, but it's a truly unique genre film that combines a tradition ghost story with a serial killer named "Geppetto," who literally pulls his victims apart limb from limb just to put them back together as a human marionette. It stars Kelen Coleman, 'True Blood's Kevin Alejandro & if you're playing close attention, you'll also spot genre vet J. Larose ('Insidious,' 'Saw III') in there too. There's a lot of weird & wild stuff in the flick, so you need to find it and check it out Asap. (It's also available on VOD right now.)

Here's a fun treat.
