I own a frankly absurd amount of movies (roughly 5000), and I’m subscribed to several streaming services. In short, I have a lot of films that I haven’t got around to watching immediately to hand. For the past decade plus I’ve been too busy in October to indulge in the Shocktober horror marathons that a lot of my friends do, but as I’m not doing the London Film Festival as press this year, I thought I’d take the opportunity to delve into the back catalogue of horror I’ve had waiting to be watched.

From September 15th until October 30th, I’ll be watching at least one new to me horror film every day, and providing collections of capsule reviews week by week. On Halloween itself, as ever, I’m planning an all day marathon of some of my favourite horror films.

August’s home media offerings are wrapping up in a big way this week, and I hope you’ve got your wallets ready because there are a ton of releases that genre fans are going to want to add to their collections. Fulci fans should be excited for the arrival of both The House by the Cemetery and The New York Ripper in 4K, courtesy of Blue Underground, and Severin is having their own Fulci fiesta this week, too, with their releases of Aenigma, Demonia as well as the recent documentary Fulci for Fake.

Scream Factory also has a killer lineup of titles headed home on Tuesday, including the Collector’s Edition of Tales from the Darkside: The Movie and the Universal Horror Collection: Volume 6.

It feels like almost every new movie is coming out on April 5th—and yes, that is probably a bit of an exaggeration, but still, we do have over 20 horror and sci-fi titles arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday and there’s no denying that’s a bunch.

Of course the big title this week is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but there are also several great indie horror films being released this week, including Ava’s Possessions, The Hallow, Cherry Tree, #Horror, and Creep, which is finally makes its way to DVD as well. Arrow Video has several special edition releases coming out on Tuesday, including The Black Cat, Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key and the Death Walks Twice box set.

Throughout the history of cinema there are countless adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe’s work, from D. W. Griffith’s early take on The Sealed Room through Roger Corman’s series of lo-fi refittings of the 60s up to last year’s attempt to adapt The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether in Stonehearst Asylum. Looking back at two loose Italian adaptations of Poe’s classic horror short The Black Cat, Arrow’s new Edgar Allan Poe’s Black Cats set sees a towering duo of giallo cinema auteurs picking and choosing their favorite elements of the original tale and molding them to their supernatural, blade-wielding will with blood-spilling glee and cinematic aplomb.

Thanks to a number of quality speciality labels, cult horror movies continue their push on Blu-ray and we have word that Werewolf Woman will be getting the high-definition upgrade in 2014.

“A woman has dreams that she is a werewolf so she goes out and finds men. She proceeds to have sex with them and then rip their throats out with her teeth. She eventually falls in love but then she is raped and her lover is murdered so she goes out for revenge.”

Raro Video just announced that Werewolf Women is one of their upcoming Blu-ray titles. It’s likely to be released in 2014, but a specific date was not provided. The movie was released in 1976 and also went under the following titles: La Lupa Mannara also known as The Legend of the Wolf Woman, She-Wolf, Terror of the She Wolf, and Naked Werewolf Woman.

Euro Cult cinema probably wouldn’t be all that interesting had it not been populated by the genre queens I have listed below in what I hope is a rather comprehensive overview of the best actresses renowned for their work in this particular area of filmmaking. Each and every one of the actresses gathered here are deliriously beautiful – but beyond that, they all have a strong presence and natural charisma that makes it easy for them to light up the screen.

Of course, mainstream cinema is populated with fine-looking women, but Euro Cult babes have a certain je ne sais quoi. Maybe it is their ready willingness to shed all of their clothes and get down to it at a moment’s notice. Or maybe it’s because they always appear to be entwined in a web of sleaze and depravity. My problem with the misogyny that runs through the giallo genre is not so much that it's there, but that it's so often unexamined. At least Sam Peckinpah's films seem to tell me something about the demons of insecurity, paranoia and loathing infesting his mind. I'm frustrated, for instance, that Dario Argento has portrayed the graphic mutilation-murder of women in his films so frequently (his own leather-gloved hands doubling for those of the killer), without ever seeming to take much interest in why this subject seems to obsess him. "I love women," he has said, "therefore I would rather show a beautiful woman being killed than an ugly man." Is it just me, or does that statement open up questions, and even paradoxes? For a former critic, Argento seems disinclined to analyze things.

Lucio Fulci sure had a way with films, especially his “Gates of Hell” trilogy. Arrow Video now complete their Blu-Ray release of the trilogy with The House by the Cemetery (the other two being City of the Living Dead and The Beyond) and what a release. With an excellent picture quality and a disk full of extras this could arguably be the best way to experience the film, other than on the big screen of course.

Lucio Fulci’s The House by the Cemetery (Quella villa accanto al cimitero) is a wrap to a loosely connected trilogy of films regarding the boundaries between the living and the dead, and Catriona MacColl is in all three.

In The Gates of Hell, a priest’s suicide unleashes a zombie apocalypse. The Beyond is about an old estate in Louisiana, which is discovered to harbor one of the gateways to hell. And lastly, in this film, a family is haunted by the undead owner of their new home.

Catriona MacColl and Paolo Malco play a couple, Lucy and Norman Boyle, who move to a small town in Massachusetts so Norman can complete the research of a colleague who committed suicide. Naturally, the couple goes to live with their son Bob in the same house the man committed suicide in. The house was built and inhabited originally by a Dr.

The Tuesday before Halloween is bound to have a lot of genre titles. The Final Girl: A Few Thoughts on Feminism and Horror By Donato Totaro

One of the more important, if not groundbreaking, accounts/recuperations of the horror film from a feminist perspective is the 1993 Carol Clover's "Men, Women, and Chainsaws". One of the book's major points concerns the structural positioning of what she calls the Final Girl in relation to spectatorship. While most theorists label the horror film as a male-driven/male-centered genre, Clover points out that in most horror films, especially the slasher film, the audience, male and female, is structurally 'forced' to identify with the resourceful young female (the Final Girl) who survives the serial attacker and usually ends the threat (until the sequel anyway.) So while the narratively dominant killer's subjective point of view may be male within the narrative,the male viewer is still rooting for the Final Girl to overcome the killer. We can see this...
