Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
The news that Danny Boyle’s 2008 hit Slumdog Millionaire could receive a sequel keeps a bizarre streak alive for the legendary director. A look back on Danny Boyle’s career proves that the British filmmaker is nothing if not versatile. However, thanks to the upcoming 28 Years Later, these three movies now have more in common than their critical success and their director. 28 Days Later is set to receive a second sequel soon.

A few weeks ago, we heard that The CW had cancelled the Supernatural prequel series The Winchesters after just one season – which wasn’t a major surprise, since The CW is under new management that is looking to wipe the slate clean for the most part. But being cancelled by The CW didn’t necessarily have to mean that The Winchesters was dead, because the show’s producers at Warner Bros. Television had the chance to find a new home for it on another network or at a streaming service. Unfortunately, Deadline reports that no one was interested in picking up The Winchesters, so the show is now officially over.
The Winchesters came from Warner Bros Television and CBS Studios. Glen Winter (Supergirl) directed and executive produced the pilot episode. This show was executive produced by Supernatural star Jensen Ackles and his wife Danneel through their company Chaos Machine Productions.

A couple months ago, Robbie Thompson – showrunner of the Supernatural prequel series The Winchesters – expressed uncertainty as to whether or not his show was going to get a second season now that The CW is being retooled. Now it’s official: The CW has cancelled The Winchesters after just one season.
Kung Fu has also been cancelled after three seasons. The CW provided the following statement to Variety: “As we reimagine the new CW, we had to make some tough programming decisions. We thank our partners at Warner Bros. and the casts and creative teams of Kung Fu and The Winchesters for all their hard work, creativity and dedication.“
The Winchesters‘ chance of continuing appeared to drop in a major way once Mark Pedowitz left as head of the network. Supernatural was already in its sixth season when Pedowitz joined The CW, but he was an established fan who had seen every episode to date.

The CW series Supernatural was already in its sixth season when Mark Pedowitz became head of the network, but he was an established fan who had seen every episode to date. And as the series continued through the 15 season run that Pedowitz enabled, the network head was so supportive that Supernatural stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles – who played monster-hunting brothers Sam and Dean Winchester on the show – came to think of him as “the other Winchester”. Pedowitz was still the head of The CW when the Supernatural prequel series The Winchesters was ordered, but last year Nexstar Media Group acquired a controlling interest in the network and Pedowitz exited his post. The CW’s Supernatural prequel, The Winchesters, takes viewers back in time to watch a young Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly) and John Winchester (Drake Rodger) pulled into a world of hunting, monsters, and romance. While it doesn’t exactly line up with the history we learned through the adventures of Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) in the flagship series, those in charge have created quite an exciting tale that showcases these characters in a new light as they attempt to stop the world-ending threat of the Akrida with friends/fellow hunters, Carlos (Jojo Fleites) and Latika (Nida Khurshid). Together, the foursome — occasionally accompanied by John’s mother Millie (Bianca Kajlich) — have developed a deep and lasting bond, proving themselves a special monster-hunting unit with their various skills. John Winchester has a Captain America moment while fighting the Akrida on The Winchesters, marking a subtle nod to Supernatural and The Boys. When John is introduced on Supernatural, he's a well-known and skillful hunter. However, as The Winchesters follows him as an up-and-coming hunter, John's superhero moment is a complete failure and shows how inexperienced he is at the beginning. However, this singular moment manages to reference Sam and Dean.
With similarities between John and Mary to their children, The Winchesters reveals how much John and Mary change as they grow up and become parents, compared to the characters introduced on Supernatural. John's Captain America moment in episode 7, "Reflections," reveals just how similar he is to both of his sons, as Sam and Dean have had their own Captain America moments.

Daddy’s home! Tom Welling touches down in the Dec. 6 episode of The Winchesters (The CW, 8/7c), and we now have a first look at the former Smallville star’s grand entrance.
Per the episode’s official logline, “the hunt heats up, and Mary and John find trails that lead back to their fathers.” So, how does Welling factor into all of this? Why, he’s playing none other than Samuel Campbell, Mary’s father. This also makes him Sam and Dean’s maternal grandfather, hence the genetic handsomeness.

Fans of The Winchesters have 13 episodes to enjoy the season since the recent announcement of its limited series order has put its future in question. For the time being, though, the story has done a good job of establishing the Supernatural prequel’s premise of John and Mary assembling a team to battle the Akrida.
The characters’ intelligence has been vital in enabling them to keep up with all the monsters, which ranges from things such as Mary’s knack for making the team’s game plan to Lata’s great knowledge of the supernatural that she executes in very clever ways. But even the evilest monsters, like the Akrida, might be hard to outsmart.

The Winchesters has successfully presented a new side to the Supernatural series since its debut, with showrunner Robbie Thompson recently promising more twists to take place. The John and Mary Winchester spin-off has managed to claim a dedicated audience primarily due to the diverse set of characters it features.
These characters range from a sassy know-it-all like Carlos to a deep-thinking personality such as Latika. Although they all have something for fans to like about them, the characters’ motivations and attitudes shape this likability factor in different ways.
The Akrida
One of the biggest retcons from Supernatural in The Winchesters is that the Akrida are now the primary threat to the universe as opposed to Michael and Lucifer. These creatures lack the charisma of many other Supernatural villains since they’ve been portrayed as straight-up monsters.

The Winchesters made its series premiere on October 11, 2022, expanding on the story of John and Mary Winchester from Supernatural. The series has so far acknowledged their eventual union through their son Dean’s narration in the future, along with setting up mysteries like the Men of Letters’ activities and the disappearance of Samuel Campbell.
These story hooks are part of a series of improvements that The Winchesters has made over Supernatural, which was somewhat held back by not focusing on certain factors. Whether it’s making John and Mary’s love story easier to believe or shedding light on the Winchester family, it’s interesting to check out the areas that The Winchesters has taken an active role in perfecting.

Four episodes into its debut season, "The Winchesters" was starting to feel too good to be true. The idea of The CW's 15-season behemoth "Supernatural" getting a spinoff was always a daunting prospect — after all, they've tried this many times before. While prior attempts never made it past their backdoor pilots, "The Winchesters" quickly got the go-ahead for a 13-episode season (plus the possibility of a full 22-episode order). But even when the show finally started hitting the airwaves, fans were plenty skeptical of the "Supernatural" prequel.
Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (voiced by Jensen Ackles), "The Winchesters" is the story of how his and Sam's parents fell in love and saved the world — a story that was already partially told by the Og series. So why craft an entire prequel around a romance we've already seen play out? I still don't have an answer for that,...

The Winchesters fans will see the first connection between the prequel and Supernatural when Richard Speight Jr. reprises his role as Loki in the series. The Winchesters is primarily related to the original show through John and Mary’s status as Sam and Dean’s parents, but there have been quite a lot of clashes within the canon.
Viewers are expected to see the unfamiliar parts of the plot as retcons, meaning they’re now the official backstory of the characters. These range from how John and Mary meet to their knowledge of the Men of Letters, along with a number of other things that have changed quite a bit compared to how they were presented in Supernatural.

Don't let the title fool you, "The Winchesters" is about so much more than the courtship of two doomed lovers. The "Supernatural" prequel has been pitched to its audience as a love story, tracing the origins of Sam and Dean's parents long before the ceiling fire tragedy that kickstarts the Og series. Instead of two brothers hunting down their missing dad, this series sees a young duo slowly falling in love ... while also searching for their missing fathers. But romance isn't the only major change from the 15-season behemoth that came before. The real secret weapon of "The Winchesters" is that it cares about so much more than just Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly) and John Winchester (Drake Rodger).
For all its talk about "family don't end in blood," and despite Dean fondly dubbing their found family Team Free Will, "Supernatural" still jumped at any opportunity to shrug off its extended cast.

John’s relationship with his mom may put him in jeopardy, but it’s nothing the team can’t handle.

The Winchesters, a prequel of the hit CW series Supernatural, follows teenage versions of Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam’s (Jared Padalecki) parents John (Drake Rodger) and Mary (Meg Donnelly) in the 1970s. The prequel has already departed from the canon history of the original in many ways, changing various aspects of their lives to make this story work with the pair working alongside Carlos (Jojo Fleites), Latika (Nida Khurshid), and Ada (Demetria McKinney) as a badass hunting team. As John and Mary look for their respective fathers, both of whom went missing while handling supernatural events, they slowly begin to rid the world of the monsters that terrorize it. Meanwhile, they face a cataclysmic threat from monsters that have previously been held off by the now-defunct Men of Letters.

If you thought that 15 seasons of fighting demons and daddy issues would be the end of the "Supernatural" saga, then you probably weren't paying attention. The titular family at the center of "The Winchesters" is evidently immortal and no amount of season finales or completed character arcs can keep them down for very long. This time around, the new CW spin-off series is delving into the untold love story of John Winchester (Drake Rodger) and Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly), the future parents of Sam and Dean. In a lot of ways, this prequel is treading very familiar ground: it's the same family, once again on the hunt to take out the creatures that go bump in the night. But "The Winchesters" boasts a few key changes. This time it's a tale of romance not brotherhood, it's set in the '70s, and there's my favorite change of all — it's an...

As a Supernatural fan, I can say with my whole heart that The Winchesters is such a great series.
Like a lot of fans, I was weary with how they would tell John and Mary's story since what was shown on Supernatural is different from the prequel series.
But this story, as different as it is, is so fresh and new and still keeps you glued to the screen.
Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly portray John and Mary, taking up the mantles from Matthew Cohen and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Amy Gumenick and Samantha Smith.

When horror series “Supernatural” debuted in 2005, no one thought it had the potential to last over 15 seasons. The series stayed on so long that it garnered multiple generations of fans, and found stars Jared Padelecki and Jensen Ackles marrying their co-stars in real life. But after over a decade of the longest monster hunter road trip in history that took siblings Sam and Dean to hell and back, (a few times), the series came to an end in 2020. And closed a chapter on the longest running and one of the most impactful genre shows in history.
Six months after Sam (Jared Padelecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester drove their beloved Impala “Baby” off into the sunset, “The Winchesters,” a prequel series focusing on Sam and Dean’s parents John and Mary Winchester, was announced. “The Winchesters,” premiering on The CW Tuesday night, is the first “Supernatural” spinoff to make it to air.

Production is moving forward for Jensen and Danneel Ackles. With their latest endeavor, “The Winchesters” slated to premiere on The CW on Oct. 11, the couple recently renewed their first-look deal with Warner Bros. Television for two more years and teases there’s a few more stories they’re looking to share in the future through their production company, Chaos Machine.
“We are excited to continue our relationship with Warner Bros. as it’s been our home for a long time. It feels only natural that The Winchesters would stay within the Warner Bros. family and continue on the Supernatural legacy,” said the couple in a joint statement.
