'End of an Era': The Wonder Years Star Marks 32 Years Since Series Finale
Image
The classic coming-of-age ABC series The Wonder Years -- following the childhood of Fred Savage’s Kevin Arnold, as told from the perspective of his older self -- ended its run in 1993. The popular TV program also starred Danica McKellar as Kevin’s crush Winnie Cooper, and the actor looks back fondly at her experience on the show.

McKellar -- marking 32 years since the show concluded -- posted to Instagram, sharing some behind-the-scenes photos from the final day on set. In one photo, McKellar is shown standing with Josh Saviano, who played Kevin’s best friend Paul Pfeiffer, and Savage. Another photo showed the trio cutting a celebratory cake with Daniel Stern (who narrated the series as an adult Kevin) and others.

The Wonder Years Star Offers New Perspective for Critics of Controversial Series Finale 31 Years Later
Image
The classic coming-of-age series The Wonder Years did not end without controversy, as the show did not conclude with a romantic ending for Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage) and Winnie Cooper (Danica McKellar). However, 31 years after the finale, McKellar herself is hinting that fans shouldn't necessarily give up on shipping Kevin and Winnie.

Originally on the air between 1988 and 1993, The Wonder Years was set during the late 1960s and early 1970s. It centered on Kevin during his formative years growing up as a high school student while Winnie was his on-again, off-again childhood girlfriend. The series finale featured a narration from the older Kevin (Daniel Stern) revealing that Kevin and Winnie wound up marrying other people when they became adults, though the two remained friends. On a recent episode of the Pod Meets World podcast (per Variety), McKellar appeared as a guest and addressed how the series finale disappointed fans who'd...

Wonder Years: How the Original Series Ended
Image
The Wonder Years is a beloved series chronicling life in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Wonder Years ended after six seasons with a controversial and rushed finale in 1993. The show returned for a reboot in 2021, earning critical acclaim but facing setbacks that eventually led to its cancellation.

ABC's The Wonder Years was one of the most notable sitcoms of the 1980s, well known for its theme song and generally saccharine tone. Going on for five years and six seasons, the show accumulated over 100 episodes and is a seminal series in the history of American television. Sadly for fans of the beloved TV series, The Wonder Years came to a close in 1993, and it did so in a way that not many appreciated. Featuring a hastily done voice-over and a future that was not what people expected, the surprising but realistic ending for the show is still a sore...

Dan Lauria will play former Speaker of the House Thomas “Tip” O’Neill in the upcoming biopic Reagan.

He’ll play opposite Dennis Quaid, who plays the 40th president.

Dan Lauria as Tip O’Neill

In a statement, director Sean McNamara said, “He and Dennis have the chemistry needed to portray Reagan and O’Neill as two politicians who were respectful adversaries.”

In Washington, the 1980s friendship between Reagan and O’Neill has long been viewed as a contrast to recent decades, as partisan rifts have gotten more personal.

Others in the case include Penelope Ann Miller as Nancy Reagan, Mena Suvari as Jane Wyman, Kevin Dillon as Jack Warner and Jon Voight as a fictional Kgb agent who tracks Reagan over the course of 40 years. Howard Klausner and Jonas McCord wrote the script.

‘The Wonder Years’: Then and now
Image
The recent round of reboots hasn’t set the world on fire when it comes to winning accolades. But that changed with ABC’s “The Wonder Years,” which premiered last September. A big reason is it’s a complete reimagining. Instead of being a coming-of-age memory comedy about a young boy growing up in the late 1960s in a middle-class White family, the new version revolves around a Black family living in that pivotal decade in Montgomery, Alabama as seen through the eyes of a 12-year-old.

The reboot has already followed in the original’s footsteps earning a prestigious Peabody Award in June for “its willful depiction of Black Joy.” The initial version picked up the award in 1989 for “pushing boundaries of the sitcom format and using new modes of storytelling.” So will Emmys be far behind for freshman series starring Elisha “Ej” Williams as 12-year-old Dean Williams and Dull...

"Just tell them what happened." Vertical Ent. has unveiled an official US trailer for an indie drama titled A Shot Through the Wall, marking the feature debut of filmmaker Aimee Long. This already premiered at the New York Asian Film Festival earlier this year, and hits VOD this January. A Chinese-American police officer's life unravels after he accidentally shoots an innocent Black man. Facing trial, he wades through his guilt as he navigates the complicated worlds of media, justice, racial politics and his own morality. The film stars Kenny Leu as Mike Tan, with Ciara Renee, Clifton Davis, Lynn Chen, Tzi Ma, Derek Goh, and Dan Lauria. This looks quite intense and heartbreaking. A sad story for everyone involved. Alley Mills will be reunited with her The Wonder Years husband Dan Lauria in the new Off Broadway production of Paul Osborn’s classic stage comedy Morning’s At Seven, a reteaming that comes as Mills replaces the recently injured Judith Ivey.

Mills, who stars on CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful, joins Lauria and other Morning’s At Seven cast members Lindsay Crouse, Alma Cuervo, Tony Roberts, John Rubinstein, Keri Safran, Jonathan Spivey and Patty McCormack (the latter most famously remembered as evil little Rhoda Penmark from 1956’s The Bad Seed).

The original Wonder Years mom was cast in the role of Arry after Ivey left the production due a torn tendon. (Nancy Ringham was a temporary replacement until Mills could join.)

“We are thrilled to have Alley Mills join our Morning’s At Seven family,” said producer Julian Schlossberg in a statement. “In the theatre, anything can happen,...

Potato Dreams Of America - Jennie Kermode - 16999
Hersh Powers
To many people around the world, America remains a semi-mythical land where dreams might come true. 'Go west, young man,' they say, and for a boy like Potato (Hersh Powers), who is just beginning to realise that he might by attracted to men, the desire to get away from the east is particularly strong. His single mother is terrified that he'll be conscripted into the Russian army, where terrible things will happen to him, so she starts looking around for a boyfriend who has more to offer them than a colour TV - ideally, a new life in the promised land.

Flash forward ten years and she (now played by Marya Sea Kaminski) and Potato (now played by Tyler Bocock) are living in a comfortable suburban house in sunny California with new husband/stepfather John (Dan Lauria). They no longer want for material things...

‘Potato Dreams of America’ Review: Queer Coming-of-Age Tale Is a Film of Two Very Different Halves
Image
The question of how to convey characters speaking a language other than English in a fully English-language production is one that many a director of an exotically-set Hollywood production or lumpy Europudding has faced over the years. For those who simply cannot resort to subtitles, the artifice of heavily accented English dialogue is a stilted standby. “Potato Dreams of America” finds an unusual way around the problem, though it takes some time for its cleverness to emerge.

Wes Hurley’s autobiographical comedy of a gay Russian teen and his plucky single mother seeking a new life in 1980s America begins in unexpected fashion: A title card tells us we’re in Gorbachev-era Vladivostok, yet the unhappy family tableau we’re plunged into is performed in broad, brash American speech. “Our lives are like Russian movies, nothing good ever happens,” observes young Vasili (Hersh Powers). That is as may be; to us,...

Lee Daniels’ ‘The Wonder Years’ Reboot Pilot Casts Elisha Williams in Fred Savage Role
Fred Savage, Olivia d'Abo, Danica McKellar, Jason Hervey, Dan Lauria, Alley Mills, and Josh Saviano in The Wonder Years (1988)
Lee Daniels’ upcoming reboot of “The Wonder Years” has found its new Kevin Arnold… er, Dean.

The ABC pilot cast Elisha “Ej” Williams to play Dean, the 12-year-old boy that serves as the center of the show, much the same way Fred Savage’s Kevin Arnold did in the original “Wonder Years.”

Here’s how ABC describes the character: “”Dean is an inquisitive and hopeful 12-year-old kid coming of age in a turbulent time. It’s 1968 in Montgomery, Alabama — and Dean is trying to figure out his place within his Black family and the world at large. Though a little insecure, a tad awkward and a bit self-conscious, he is determined to make his mark on the world around him.”

Williams joins Saycon Sengbloh, who will play his mother, Lillian, in the pilot.

Put into development last summer, “The Wonder Years” reboot will be set in the same era as the original 1980s series,...

Saycon Sengbloh attends Disney's Queen of Katwe premiere in Los Angeles.
Saycon Sengbloh will star in Lee Daniels’ reboot of “The Wonder Years” at ABC, which currently has a pilot order.

Sengbloh will play Lillian Williams, the mother of the family at the center of the show. The new version of the classic TV series will shift the focus to a Black middle class family in Alabama.

Here’s how ABC describes the character: “Sharp as a tack, Lillian is confident, kind, perceptive and has a good sense of humor. She knows exactly the right thing to say to convince you of anything. As a mother, wife and full-time accountant, she’s organized, efficient and hard-working, but she always puts family first.”

Put into development last summer, “The Wonder Years” reboot will be set in the same era as the original 1980s series, with “Dave” executive producer Saladin Patterson writing and executive producing. The “Empire” creator executive produces alongside Marc Velez of Lee Daniels Entertainment.

Bad Impulse – Review
Image
This time of year family’s at the forefront of the thoughts of many. Aside from being together (tough right now for some), the matriarch or patriarch is thinking about how to keep the home crew safe from harm and secure in their toasty beds. Unlike the Garrity clan from this week’s other big release Greenland, the Sharpe’s isn’t dealing with a planet-killing comet. His fears arise from the possible onslaught of stealthy intruders in the dead of night. It’s too bad that he doesn’t recall the quote from one of the founding fathers (maybe more of a cool uncle), Ben Franklin: “Those who would give up essential Liberty to purchase a little temporary Safety deserve neither Liberty nor Safety”. Still, it probably didn’t occur to him that his fears could inspire his whole “unit” to succumb to a Bad Impulse.

The story...

Trailer for 'Bad Impulse' Horror About an Evil Home Security System
Paul Sorvino, Grant Bowler, Sonya Walger, Nicholas Danner, Oscar Debler, and Abbi Ford in Bad Impulse (2019)
"It makes you safe... Isn't that what you want?" Gravitas has released an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Bad Impulse, the latest film directed by actress / acting coach / director / producer Michelle Danner. In the aftermath of a traumatic event, a suburban husband & father decides to buy a cutting edge home security system from a mysterious man, only to find that it slowly destroys that which he most wants to protect. Sounds a bit like The Box, but with a home security system instead of a box. Bad Impulse stars Grant Bowler, Paul Sorvino, Sonya Walger, James Landry-Hebert, Abbi Ford, Stephanie Cayo, Dan Lauria, and Rebecca Black. This looks a bit too weird and a bit too creepy, but not really any good. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Michelle Danner's Bad Impulse, direct from YouTube: In the aftermath of a traumatic event, Henry Sharpe (Grant Bowler), a suburban father and husband,...
