For our Meet the Experts: TV Production Designers roundtable, Gold Derby gathered five acclaimed production designers to discuss highlights of their work both this season and throughout their careers. Joining us were Bridgerton production designer Alison Gartshore, Mid-Century Modern production designer Greg Grande, 1923 production designers Lisa Ward and Cary White, and Only Murders in the Building production designer Patrick Howe.
Watch the full group panel above. Click each person's name to watch their individual interview.
During their conversation, the production designers shared their most surprising “happy accident” that occurred under a tight deadline, which ultimately improved a set or scene beyond its original vision.
"My motto is it's better to be lucky than smart," veteran designer White declares when thinking back on the many instances where planning is thrown out the window because of unforeseen circumstances. Co-designer Ward concurs, explaining that "there are days you just have to pivot and make decisions so quickly.

" It’s always an honor to be nominated," Emmy-contending production designer Greg Grande declares about his sixth career Emmy nomination, this time for Mid-Century Modern. But, as he explains in Gold Derby's Meet the Experts: TV Production Designers panel, he was pleasantly surprised on the morning the nominations were announced, because "this format, the multi-cam format, up against these beautiful single-camera half-hour shows -- is tough to be head-to-head against. My first reaction was, ‘wow, I'm glad it holds its own, but in a completely different format; a completely different situation in how we build the sets and how we shoot them and our budgets." As the saying goes, No Good Deed goes unpunished. Amid a day when the cancellation axe has already cut down the comedic murder-mystery The Residence and the medical procedural Pulse, Netflix is also hitting the pause button on its darkly comedic anthology series, according to Deadline. The show, which featured a bevy of talent led by Lisa Kudrow and Linda Cardellini, has been waiting for an update since its first season dropped back in December, and it was becoming clear that the news would not be good when it arrived. Fortunately, there is a ray of hope as, while there are currently no plans for a sophomore outing, sources have said that a second season is possible in the future with a new cast and an entirely new story.
Part of the reason for the indefinite pause likely came down to the lukewarm reception to the series from audiences. Although...

With 99 submissions, this year's Best Comedy Directing category at the Emmys will have six finalists when the nominations are announced July 15.
Similar to the drama category, the comedy directing ballot has a mix of shows that took different approaches to their entries. While some played it smart (see: Hacks and The Studio) submitting one memorable episode that will be a sure-thing to make the final field, others opted for three entries, with Shrinking going up to four. In those cases, overload and potential vote-splitting make it harder to discern which episode entry will make it into the lineup of six — technically five, since one spot is reserved for a multicamera show. (More on that below.)
As mentioned, Hacks and The Studio are essentially locks for this category because of their single options. The HBO Max series has been a consistent nominee — Lucia Aniello won for the first season in 2021 — and it submitted the penultimate episode,...

Epperson died Saturday of cardiac arrest at Southwest General Health Center in Middleburg Heights, Ohio, his wife of 58 years, Patty Epperson, told The Hollywood Reporter. He had been in and out of the hospital and rehab since April 29 when his appendix burst.
Known for his skill with hand-held cameras, Epperson in 1981 shot from the Roxy in West Hollywood The Pee-wee Herman Show, which ran on HBO and put Paul Reubens and his hilarious alter ego on the map.

“Mid-Century Modern” star Nathan Lane is fully embracing his sitcom’s queerness. Moreover, he feels that it’s a necessity for mainstream television in the current, divisive political era. In an interview with Deadline, Lane called such “joyously gay” series necessary for the good of the nation.
“I just think it’s healthy for the environment,” Lane said. “Look, there are 365 million people in this country. This is not a show for everybody. Just as ‘Yellowstone’ has its demographic, we have ours. And it’s not going to be to everybody’s taste because it is naughty and because it’s so joyously gay, without shame, and just reveling in their gayness. That’s upsetting to some people, but I think it’s healthy and it’s great for people to see that men of a certain age are still out there living their lives openly and freely and having...

Emmy-nominated veteran actor Harris Yulin had another major TV role lined up when he died suddenly of cardiac arrest on June 10 at the age of 87 — he was set a lead opposite Kevin Kline, Joe Tenney and Laura Linney in the upcoming MGM+ comedy American Classic. The half-hour series, from creators/executive producers Michael Hoffman and Bob Martin, had just started production in New York on Monday, with Yulin preparing to start filming his role this week before his passing.
Shooting on American Classic, from Fifth Season, with Mar-Key Pictures, Likely Story and Anonymous Content, is continuing. The schedule has been adjusted around Yulin’s scenes as the producing team is regrouping to figure out next steps, sources tell Deadline. The role Yulin was supposed to play, Linus, will likely be recast.

To date, Emmy voters have showered Only Murders in the Building with 49 nominations and seven wins, though none of the main actors has prevailed. That could all change for the buzzed-about fourth season, which aired last summer and is now eligible at the 2025 Emmys.

His costars, Steve Martin (Charles-Haden Savage) and Selena Gomez (Mabel Mora), are both in sixth place for nominations. The three leads play unlikely crime-solvers who podcast about murders that occur in and around their building, the fancy-schmancy Arconia in New York City.

Criminal Minds: Evolution star Aj Cook reveals why filming Will's funeral was so meaningful, and the reason is more than heartbreaking. Cook's character (Jennifer "JJ" Jareau) is a Supervisory Special Agent who used to be a part of the Behavioral Analysis Unit, also known as the Bau, working with police and media officials until season 6, accepting an assignment with the Pentagon. However, for season 7, she became the acting unit chief of the Bau.
During an interview with ScreenRant's Alisha Grauso, Cook opened up about working with Linda Lavin (Connie Lamontagne) and how special it was to work with her before she passed away in December 2024. Cook was honored to work with Lavin, especially since she was her on-screen daughter-in-law. While she was sad they only got to work on one episode together, Cook is grateful for the time they had.
Screen Rant: The scene between JJ and Connie was very intense.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 18 Episode 3 “Time to Say Goodbye.”] A.J. Cook delivers her best performance of the series in the Criminal Minds: Evolution episode (directed by Joe Mantegna!) following the shocking death of JJ’s husband, Will. It’s one that should but sadly probably won’t get the acknowledgement by awards voters it deserves. This is a JJ who’s trying to be strong for her kids and her mother (Candy Clark), struggling with having Will’s mother, Connie (Linda Lavin), around criticizing and blaming her for not knowing about her son’s health issues, and generally just trying to hold it together. She succeeds in doing that last bit, but just barely and understandably. All in all, it’s a solid post-death episode, especially for one that has as major an impact on a main character as this one does (they were together 18 years!) and it features Matthew Gray Gubler...

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3 Episode 3 slowed its pace but deepened its pulse.
“Time to Say Goodbye” isn’t a standard episode. It’s a meditation on grief, guilt, and how loss ripples through the people left behind.
Where other shows might fast-forward through mourning, Evolution lingers. It lets JJ — and us — feel every beat of the aftershock.
(Michael Yarish/Paramount+)
From the start, it’s clear this episode will hit differently.
JJ sits on the couch, lost in the memory of her wedding to Will, only to be yanked back to the present by the sound of her boys.

Television has often been described as a mirror of our world. Through various genres and formats, we can see the many ways humankind comes together and interacts with each other, for better or for worse. Just like the people we encounter in real life, the characters on our favorite shows and the people who bring them to life will sometimes have to deal with death.
The cast and crew of Hulu's "Mid-Century Modern" learned this the hard way when the legendary Linda Lavin passed away while the show was in the middle of filming their first season. The Broadway veteran and "Alice" star played Sybil, the wise-cracking, overbearing, and deeply loving mother of Nathan Lane's Bunny Schneiderman, who is the Sophia of the "Golden Girls"-esque series. But when Lavin succumbed to cardiopulmonary arrest in December 2024, her character suffered a similar fate, leaving behind mourners on both sides of the camera.

A member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Theater Hall of Fame, Strouse wrote music for more than a dozen Broadway shows.
He and lyricist Martin Charnin were responsible for the immortal tunes “Tomorrow” and “It’s the Hard Knock Life” from Annie, and he and his most frequent collaborator, lyricist Lee Adams, partnered on such classic show tunes as “Put on a Happy Face” from Bye Bye Birdie, “You’ve Got Possibilities” from It’s a Bird … It’s a Plane … It’s Superman and “This Is the Life” from Golden Boy.
Asked by Playbill in 2009 why he got into the theater, Strouse replied: “You can make a lot of money and you meet beautiful girls.

Charles Strouse, the musical composer for such Broadway hits as Bye Bye Birdie, Applause and Annie, films including Bonnie and Clyde (1967) The Night They Raided Minsky’s (1968) and All Dogs Go To Heaven (1989) and for the TV series All In The Family, died at his home in New York City on May 15. He was 96.
His death was announced by his children Benjamin, Nicholas, Victoria, and William Strouse., and was nominated for Golden Boy, Charlie & Algernon, Rags, and Nick & Nora.
Strouse was born on June 7, 1928 in New York City, the son of Ethel (Newman) and Ira Strouse. After graduating from the Eastman School of Music in 1947, he received two scholarships to Tanglewood, where he studied under composer Aaron Copland. Subsequently, Copland arranged for Strouse to get a scholarship with legendary teacher, Nadia Boulanger, in Paris.
Strouse met songwriting partner, lyricist Adams, at a party in 1949, and the duo began a longtime collaboration starting with writing songs for summer resorts in the Adirondacks. Strouse and Adams contributed material to numerous Off-Broadway musical revues, including Catch a Star, Shoestring Revue, The Littlest Revue and Kaleidoscope, and wrote specialty material for Kaye Ballard, Carol Burnett, Jane Morgan and Dick Shawn.
In 1958, Strouse and lyricist, Fred Tobias wrote the chart-topping pop song “Born Too Late” (recorded by The Poni-Tails), and it was in that same year that Strouse and Adams had their Broadway breakthrough. They were hired by producer Edward Padula to write a satirical musical about rock and roll and teen idol culture. The show, Bye Bye Birdie, became their first Tony Award-winning hit. The production starred Chita Rivera and Dick Van Dyke and won four 1961 Tony Awards including Best Musical, earning Strouse the first of his three Tony Awards.
The show introduced the world to such songs as “Put On A Happy Face,” and “A Lot of Livin’ to Do.” A 1962 movie version, starring Ann-Margret, was one of the top-grossing films of the year, and featured Margret’s now iconic performance of the film’s newly added title song, “Bye Bye Birdie.” Strouse would later win a 1996 Emmy Award for the new song, “Let’s Settle Down,” written with Adams and added for the musical’s 1995 TV adaptation, starring Jason Alexander and Vanessa Williams.

Additional collaborations with Adams include the Mel Brooks musical All American (1962) starring Ray Bolger. Though the show was not a commercial success, it featured what would become the popular American standard “Once Upon a Time”. Golden Boy (1963), a musical adaptation of the play by Clifford Odets starred Sammy Davis Jr., garnered Strouse his second Tony Award nomination. It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane… It’s Superman! gave audiences another popular Strouse & Adams song, “You’ve Got Possibilities” (first recorded by Linda Lavin). And in 1970, when the team wrote the score for Applause (based on the film All About Eve and Mary Orr’s The Wisdom of Eve and starring Lauren Bacall), Strouse would win his second Tony Award.
Strouse’s biggest Broadway success was with collaborators Martin Charnin and Thomas Meehan on Annie (1977), based on the comic strip, “Little Orphan Annie,” by Harold Gray. The Depression-era musical about a plucky red-headed orphan girl who wins the heart of billionaire Oliver Warbucks, was one of Broadway’s biggest hits of the 1970s, winning seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and garnering Strouse his third Tony Award and a Grammy Award for Best Cast Show Album. Strouse’s score included “Tomorrow,” “It’s the Hard–Knock Life,” “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” and “I Don’t Need Anything But You.” Annie ran for over 2,300 performances on Broadway, where it has been revived twice and has inspired hundreds of worldwide productions. It has also been adapted for two film and two television productions.
Strouse was passionate about collaboration and would earn Tony Award nominations for his scores with lyricists: David Rogers, Charlie & Algernon (1980), based on the novel Flowers for Algernon, Steven Schwartz, for Rags (1986), with book writer Joseph Stein starring Teresa Stratas, and Nick and Nora (1991), a musical based on Dashiell Hammett’s The Thin Man characters, written with Richard Maltby, Jr.
Strouse’s film scores include Bonnie and Clyde (1967) starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, There Was a Crooked Man (1970), with Henry Fonda and Kirk Douglas, Sidney Lumet’s Just Tell Me What You Want, and the animated feature All Dogs Go To Heaven (1989).
In addition to his awards, Strouse was the recipient of several honorary doctorates. He was a longtime member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, inducted in 1985, and the Theatre Hall of Fame.
Strouse also composed orchestral works, chamber music, piano concertos, and an opera. His original piano work, Concerto America, was composed in 2002 to commemorate 9/11 and premiered at The Boston Pops in 2004. His opera Nightingale (1982), starring Sarah Brightman, had a successful run in London, followed by many subsequent productions.
In 1977, Strouse founded the ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop, through which many young composers and lyricists honed their craft and developed their work. Strouse authored the autobiography Put on a Happy Face: A Broadway Memoir, published by Union Square Press in July 2008.
In addition to his four children, Strouse is survived by eight grandchildren, Sam and Arthur Strouse, Navah Strouse, Vivian, Weston and Ever Brush, and Owen and Theodore Strouse.
A private ceremony will be held at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel in New York City.
