Two Scottish Cities Feuded Over Groundskeeper Willie’s Origin Story
Image
The Simpsons’ Groundskeeper Willie sure doesn’t seem like the most favorable representation of Scottish culture. After all, this is a character who accidentally flashed a crowd of spectators during the bogus “Scotchtoberfest” celebration, and couldn’t sell a plate of haggis to save his life.

But oddly enough, two cities in Scotland once clashed over who had the right to claim Willie as their own.

Back in 2009, The Scotsman reported that the Glasgow City Council had included Groundskeeper Willie in their online list of “Famous Glaswegians,” alongside the names of non-cartoon celebrities like Billy Connolly and Lulu. While the city acknowledged that Willie’s roots hadn’t been totally confirmed, their claim wasn’t totally without evidence. Glasgow officials pointed to the Season Eight episode “Simpsoncalifragilisticexpiala(Annoyed Grunt)cious” in which Willie connects with his old friend, magical nanny Shary Bobbins. Reminiscing on their days together in the “old country,...

Here’s the Dirty Phrase Fox Censors Wouldn’t Allow on ‘The Simpsons’ This Week
Image
Possibly because the current writing staff of The Simpsons is secretly in the pocket of Big Jean, the stand-out segment of this year’s “Treehouse of Horror” episode was a pants-based tale called “Denim.” The Venom parody found Homer bonding with a symbiotic pair of alien jeans, and seducing Marge who, in this story, works as a server at “Irv’s Non-Canonical Diner.” Although it still somehow managed to be less ridiculous than the actual Venom franchise.

The episode justifiably earned acclaim for its unusual visual style, which combined the traditional Simpsons 2D look with stop-motion animation created by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios (of Robot Chicken fame), which brought the titular fabric to life.

In addition to its boundary-pushing aesthetic, “Denim” also stretched the limits of prime-time cartoon sexiness. As writer and co-showrunner Rob Lazebnik pointed out, the scene in which Marge tries in vain to get Homer out of his...

Inside Homer Simpson’s Pants: How ‘The Simpsons’ Writers Pulled Off Last Night’s ‘Venom’ Parody
Image
For 35 years now, The Simpsons has been turning out bangers each and every Halloween, and last night was no exception.

“Treehouse of Horror Xxxv” opened with a wild couch gag from guest animator Jorge R. Gutierrez before going into its first story, “The Information Rage,” which served as a commentary on our current political climate as seen through the lens of a Pacific Rim movie. Then came a genuinely scary story set in Victorian-era Springfield with Mr. Burns at its center. Finally, the biggest swing of the night was “Denim,” a Venom parody done entirely in stop-motion animation where Homer gets into a symbiotic relationship with a pair of jeans.

The episode was overseen by co-showrunner Rob Lazebnik, who jumped on the phone with me last week to discuss how the writers determined which Simpsons characters were Democrats and which were Republicans, the difficulty with animating jump-scares and what it...

Inside ‘The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror Xxxv Spoofs of ‘Pacific Rim’ and ‘Venom’
Image
Do you carve pumpkins for your Halloween tradition? Here, we watch The Simpsons’ annual “Treehouse of Horror” episode. And this week’s Season 36 installment on Fox is filled with jump-scares and jests. First, get ready for a special couch gag intro, created by The Book of Life‘s Jorge Gutierrez and composer Juan Carlos Enriquez that puts a Simpsons spin on Día de los Muertos with lucha libre visuals and punk rock sounds. And then no matter what side of the ballot you’re on, you’ll appreciate the first story in the episode: Bickering siblings Bart and Lisa must battle giant monsters created by political rage using a Pacific Rim–style robot. “Both sides will be offended,” teases executive producer Matt Selman with a laugh. “Rather than weigh in on one side or the other, I guess [writer Rob Lazebnik, who wrote the segment and co-ran the episode] wanted to...

The Simpsons Reveals First Look at Venom Spoof for 'Treehouse of Horror' Episode
Image
The Simpsons will be taking aim at Tom Hardy's Venom in the next "Treehouse of Horror" episode. The 35th installment of the Halloween specials for the animated series will include a stop-motion parody of Venom, and a poster reveals a first look at the spoof.

Per Variety, the episode is touted to be the "scariest 35th Halloween special ever." The Venom parody will be with the introduction of a character called "Denim." The spoof was discussed at San Diego Comic-Con, where moderator Kevin Smith was joined by The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, showrunner Matt Selman, and producers Rob Lazebnik, Jessica Conrad, and Tim Bailey. Additionally, Stoopid Monkey's Seth Green and Harv Harvatine joined the panel, with the latter showcasing some of the actual puppets made with denim jeans that had been used for the animation.

‘The Simpsons’ Reveals Epic Guest Cast & Kamala Harris Surprise Appearance
Image
The Simpsons has a stacked list of guest stars in the Season 36 premiere debuting this Fall. The iconic animated series revealed that former Simpsons writer Conan O’Brien will return for a major guest spot in the season premiere during its panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 27, and he’s not the only big name. Vice President Kamala Harris also made a surprise virtual cameo during the panel. O’Brien will be joined by Tom Hanks, Danny DeVito, and John Cena as guest stars when The Simpsons returns on Sunday, September 29 on Fox. The episode is titled “Bart’s Birthday,” and the producers said they’re taking a big swing with the plot. “It’s kind of crazy, star-studded premiere,” showrunner Matt Selman said during the panel, per Variety. “It’s a pretty bold, big idea.” Selman was joined on the panel by creator Matt Groening and producers Rob Lazebnik,...

‘The Simpsons’ Reveals Upcoming ‘Venom’ Parody, Shares Video of Kamala Harris Reciting a Famous ‘Treehouse of Horror’ Quote at Comic-Con Panel
Image
The Simpsons is partnering with the folks from Stoopid Buddy (“Robot Chicken”) to take on “Venom” in this fall’s annual “Treehouse of Horror” extravaganza. In this case, Homer meets his match with “Denim.” It’s the 35th “Treehouse of Horror,” and the show is promising “the scariest 35th Halloween special ever.”

Creator Matt Groening, showrunner Matt Selman and producers Rob Lazebnik, Jessica Conrad and Tim Bailey joined guest moderator Kevin Smith to discuss “Treehouse of Horror,” other episodes and special voices from the upcoming season.

In the case of “Denim,” Selman told Variety that the segment will center on Homer’s “deep relationship with a simple alien symbiotic pair of jeans. It’s a really funny, silly segment about the jeans are going to be actual actual stop motion denim created by the Stoopid Buddies animators that do the ‘Robot Chicken’ shows.”

To discuss the segment, Stoopid Buddy’s...

Wink’s Joe Aguilar on Why Animation Co-Productions Are Risky and Slow
China’s Wink Animation, a division of Huayi Brothers, is a Chinese animation company that creates both Chinese-language films and globally-skewing features for the young adult market. It produces both fully animated and hybrid content that combines live action with animated characters.

The company is led by CEO Joe Aguilar, former CFO of Oriental DreamWorks, who led the flagship Sino-Hollywood co-venture while it produced “Kung Fu Panda 3,” the highest-grossing animated co-production of its time. Aguilar will be at FilMart on Tuesday to deliver a keynote address on co-productions in the animation space.

According to Aguilar, it will still be quite some time before globally successful animated co-productions explode onto the scene. “It’s not going to go as fast as everyone wants it to happen. There’s a lot to learn in terms of the risk factors, and culturally about how to work together,” he told Variety.

Starbucks Teams Up With Three ‘Simpsons’ Writers For Its Second Web Series
Starbucks’ first branded web series, Upstanders, was an inspirational look at people who are difference-makers in their respective communities. The coffee chain’s second digital show, on the other hand, adopts a very different tone. It’s called 1st & Main, and it consists of short, animated vignettes set within a Starbucks establishment.

The brains behind 1st & Main are John Frink, Joel H Cohen, and Rob Lazebnik, all of whom have written episodes of The Simpsons. For their work with Starbucks, which they produced through their studio Tolerable Entertainment, they sketched out a few amusing stories that use some of Starbucks’ signature elements as plot points. The first episode, for example, imagines what would happen if a couple chose their baby’s name from among the ones shouted by the barista at their local coffee shop.

Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer in The Simpsons (1989)
After 27 seasons of not-so-subtle hints on The Simpsons, longtime Springfield resident Waylon Smithers Jr. will finally come out and reveal to viewers he is gay in an episode inspired by a Simpsons writer's relationship with his gay son.

In the episode, titled "The Burns Cage" and set to premiere Sunday, Smithers finally comes to terms that his unrequited love for his boss C. Montgomery Burns will never be reciprocated, so Homer Simpson goes in search of a better match for his supervisor. "We didn't really want to have that big moment of 'I'm out,...

On Sunday’s episode of “The Simpsons,” Smithers finally comes out of the closet, and Rob Lazebnik, the episode’s writer, said that he was inspired by his own gay son. In an interview with the New York Post, Lazebnik explained that the episode was not only inspired by his 21-year-old son Johnny’s coming out but also demonstration of his fatherly love. “I am a Midwestern guy, so I don’t tend to wear my emotions on my sleeve, but I thought, ‘What better way to tell my son I love him than to write a cartoon about it?...

'Family Guy,' 'Simpsons' writers protest 'Community' animated episode on Emmy ballot, want 'same rights'
Seth MacFarlane
Updated: Animated series writers are protesting a decision by the Television Academy to allow NBC’s Community to compete for Emmys in animated categories, arguing that they should be allowed similar cross-genre privileges.

Community made it onto the Emmy nomination ballot in several categories, including best animated program — along with 33 entries from full-time animated shows. The episode, “Digital Estate Planning,” features the cast rendered into 8-bit characters to compete in an old-school-style video game.

Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy), David X. Cohen (Futurama) and Al Jean (The Simpsons) are among the 52 writer-producers who signed a letter to the TV Academy arguing...

Web Series Pioneer Icebox Gets a Second Chance (Updated)
Howard Gordon at an event for Homeland (2011)
Long before the advent of YouTube, television showrunners Howard Gordon, Rob Lazebnik and Jonathan Collier helped found Icebox, one of the first production companies devoted to web series. Gordon, a showrunner on "24" who helped develop "Homeland," and other Hollywood heavyweights were able to lure some of the industry's most talented creatives -- including Larry David, writers for "South Park" and Mike Reiss, a former "Simpsons" showrunner -- to contribute work to Icebox. Their timing – more than a decade ago – was unfortunate, and the company ran out of money. But the rapid growth of...

If past years are any indication, Comic-Con will begin releasing its official 2011 panel schedule later today (Wednesday) with the schedule for Preview Night, Wednesday, July 20.
