Chain Reaction (1996) – What Happened to This Sci-Fi Action Movie?
Image
The Chain Reaction episode of What Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written and Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Narrated by Tyler Nichols, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

In the summer of 1996, Chain Reaction hit theaters with just about everything you’d want from a ’90s action thriller. Keanu Reeves was still riding high as the sympathetic action hero from Speed. Morgan Freeman brought his A-game and his signature weapon voice. Even director Andrew Davis was a hot commodity, fresh off directing The Fugitive, which had critics cheering and audiences running to theaters like they were being chased by Tommy Lee Jones. Throw in classic ‘90s plot elements like government conspiracy, corrupt suits, and a groundbreaking scientific discovery, and you’ve got popcorn gold. Or at least you should. The script went through many rewrites, which resulted in a frustrated cast. Filming took...

‘Pretty Woman: The Musical’ lands in Australia starring Samantha Jade
Image
The Australian star will bring Vivian to life in the new national production of the hit musical based on the iconic 1990 film.

Samantha Jade has been confirmed as the lead for the highly anticipated Australian version of Pretty Woman: The Musical, playing Vivian, the character immortalised by Julia Roberts in the classic romantic movie. The premiere will take place at Brisbane’s Qpac this October, before moving to Sydney’s Theatre Royal in November.

Producer Suzanne Jones, from Jones Theatrical Group, expressed her excitement after the artist’s audition: “We knew from the very first moment that not offering her the role would be a huge mistake. Enormous. Her voice fits perfectly with Bryan Adams’ iconic score. I know Australian audiences will fall in love with her.”

For Samantha, this role means much more than just a new challenge: it’s an opportunity to connect with an audience that has watched her grow.

The Sci-Fi Flop That Keanu Reeves Couldn't Believe He Made
Image
In Andrew Davis' 1996 thriller "Chain Reaction," Keanu Reeves plays Eddie Kasalivich, a machinist at the University of Chicago who is overseeing a special scientific experiment to turn hydrogen into energy. Eddie isn't a genius, but he knows how the water-filled chain reaction chamber works. Then, one night, he accidentally discovers an obscure sound frequency that stabilizes the experiment and gets it to succeed. It seems that the world's energy supply issues are going to be solved.

Of course, this immediately kicks off a shadowy cover-up wherein the chain reaction chamber is blown up by unknown conspirators and Eddie is framed for the destruction. (The explosion takes out eight full city blocks.) Innocent scientists are killed, so Eddie has to go on the run with a physicist named Lily, played by Reeves at-the-time-future "Constantine" co-star Rachel Weisz. Naturally, they must find a way to prove their innocence and discover who would...

Richard Gere Reveals His 1 Condition For a Sequel to the Ultimate Rom-Com 35 Years Later
Image
In 1990, Richard Gere appeared in Pretty Woman alongside Julia Roberts. The rom-com recently celebrated 35 years since its release, and it's still one of the most beloved films in the genre.

In a new interview with People, Gere revealed what would take for him to reprise his role in a possible Pretty Woman sequel.

Asked about the idea of a sequel, Gere revealed he has one requirement: "It all comes down to whether or not there's a good script." His answer makes sense, but the probability of a sequel is low. Pretty Woman came from the late Garry Marshall,...

Pretty Woman’s Lead Role Went Through Multiple Actresses Before Julia Roberts Hit Stardom
Image
Pretty Woman’s lead role went to various actresses before Julia Roberts ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

After this, Julia Roberts snagged the role to launch her to global fame. It was a classic mix of talent, timing, and, let’s be honest, some seriously quirky Hollywood decisions.

Let’s start with Molly Ringwald. The teen queen of the 1980s turned down Vivian because she felt “something icky about it.” She candidly told The Guardian that even back then, she sensed a story vibe that just didn’t sit right. Ringwald’s hesitation paved the way for others to test their luck—and face similar hurdles.

So who else tried to snag the role of Vivian? Let’s just say Disney and Garry Marshall, the director behind Pretty Woman, had some ambitious picks. Karen Allen was first in the mix. Then came Winona Ryder, Jennifer Connelly, and even Diane Lane. But each time,...

No Happy Ending For Julia Roberts: Pretty Woman’s Original Ending Would’ve Given Us Lifetime Trauma
Image
Garry Marshall’s multi-award-winning 1990 film Pretty Woman, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, has been one of the most recognizable romantic films of the era. However, the film that catapulted Roberts’ career in the industry, wasn’t initially meant to be romantic—instead, the film originally had a much grittier and darker ending.

Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman (1990) | image: Disney

While the movie, which represented the harsh world of s*x workers and the way they are treated in society, ended on a happy note with Julia Roberts’ Vivian finding her love in Richard Gere’s rich businessman Edward, the original ending was supposed to be quite traumatic. But thankfully, with the movie going to Disney, under Garry Marshall’s direction, Pretty Woman ended on an optimistic note.

Julian Roberts’ Vivian Didn’t Originally Have a Happy Ending

Julia Roberts has been a Hollywood staple for romantic comedies and art films since the 90s,...

Richard Gere Jokes His ‘Pretty Woman’ Role Was “Criminally Underwritten”
Image
Pretty Woman had an infamously winding road from the page to the screen, and Richard Gere‘s character must have gotten lost somewhere along the way.

The Golden Globe winner joked that his wealthy leading man role Edward Lewis in the 1990 romantic comedy was “criminally underwritten” while reflecting on the Garry Marshall-helmed film during a Masterclass on Sunday at the Venice Film Festival.

“I was playing a character that was almost criminally underwritten,” he said with a laugh, according to multiple outlets. “It was basically a suit and a good haircut.”

While unpacking a sexy scene between Edward and sex worker Vivan Ward (Julia Roberts), in which he plays a piano before undressing her atop the instrument. “I mean, no chemistry,” he joked after the scene was played for the audience.

“This actor and this actress obviously had no chemistry between them… I haven’t seen that in a long time,...

Howard Stern has been one of the most controversial – and revered – figures in the history of modern media. With a passion for the field as a child, Stern’s climb to the top of the radio world truly began in the ‘80s. And he did it off of his unique, button-pressing, FCC-clashing brand and humor: the boobs, the prank calls, the Wack Pack, all of it all made Howard Stern one of the most recognizable figures in all of media. And so as his markets grew and his written word topped the charts – but long before his first $500 million contract with Sirius – it was time for Stern to enter the movie business…with something a little more commercially viable than Butt Bongo Fiesta.

So how did the guy who mocked his wife’s miscarriage on the air and flipped the bird to nearly every boss he’s ever had...

Lea Thompson Could Have Starred In Pretty Woman, But She Made One Huge Mistake
Image
The 1990 romantic comedy "Pretty Woman" helped launch Julia Roberts' career into the stratosphere. Starring opposite Richard Gere, Roberts played Vivian Ward, a streetwalker with a heart of gold who wins the affection of her cold-hearted client. The role earned Roberts a Best Actress Oscar nomination and turned her into an overnight Hollywood sensation. Her performance prompted Roger Ebert to prophetically write, "Actresses who can do that and look great can have whatever they want in Hollywood." Roberts would become synonymous with the romantic comedy genre.

It is hard to imagine anyone other than Roberts in "Pretty Woman". To do so, we need to go back ... to the future. Heading into the 1990s, Lea Thompson was coming off the massive success of two "Back to the Future" movies and a string of films that included "Casual Sex?" and "Some Kind of Wonderful."

The versatile actress certainly had the chops to play...

Stream of the Day: Thirty Years Later, ‘Pretty Woman’ Still Can’t Deny Its Dark Indie Roots
J. F. Lawton
With readers turning to their home viewing options more than ever, this daily feature provides one new movie each day worth checking out on a major streaming platform.

When screenwriter J.F. Lawton first wrote what would become Garry Marshall’s smash hit “Pretty Woman” three decades ago, the struggling scribe couldn’t possibly have dreamed what his project — a dark drama entitled “3,000” about a sex worker and the rich dude who employs her for a week — would eventually become. The product of a wily attempt to move from broad comedies and “ninja movies” (his words), Lawton turned his attention to darker tales of woe, inspired by a financially insecure America and the struggling denizens of Hollywood who lived around him.

Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront (1954)
Broadway 2018: Movies Took The Stage With Startling Results, And More Are Coming Soon
Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront (1954)
Fair or not, when I think of movies that made the screen-to-stage transition, two notorious flops come to mind. The great screenwriter Bud Schulberg himself adapted his 1954 classic Brando morality tale On the Waterfront for Broadway in 1995, but neither Brando nor the film’s director Elia Kazan were around to help make the play anything close to a contender. The play lumbered through 24 performances at the Brooks Atkinson Theater.

At least Waterfront has been forgotten: Screen-to-stage musical flop Carrie, the $8 million blood bath from 1988, has long since become synonymous with Broadway disaster.

Both productions had their issues — and then some — but commenters at the time and rearview gawkers later were quick to point a finger at Hollywood and raise the question, “Why would anyone want to pay Broadway prices for something they could watch on the late show?”

But times change. While Broadway critics (this one included...

Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman (1990)
Broadway’s ‘Pretty Woman’ Musical: All Dressed Up With No Place To Go – Review
Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman (1990)
I might not be the target audience for Pretty Woman – The Musical, seeing as how I was never a fan of Pretty Woman – The Movie. Just never thought it was cute, funny or charming when Richard Gere, in that 1990 star-making movie, jokingly snapped shut that proffered jewelry box, drawing the startled, wide-mouthed guffaw that transformed Julia Roberts into Julia Roberts.

And that was 10 years before the Millennium, well before the Laugh became schtick, and well well before #MeToo and Time’s Up did in – to anyone who was listening – the romanticization of sexual commodification in Hollywood.

Follow-your-dream American Idol platitudes and ’90s nostalgia don’t come close to explaining how or why Pretty Woman made its Cinderella trip from rom-com guilty pleasure to cloying, regressive Broadway musical. Bland Mor songs, costumes mistaking gaudy for glitzy and a sugary lead performance add up to one very smudged, very ill-fitting glass slipper.

Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman (1990)
Broadway Review: ‘Pretty Woman: The Musical’
Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman (1990)
When the 1990 movie comedy “Pretty Woman” catapulted Julia Roberts to stardom, it was widely reported that Disney and late director Garry Marshall had tweaked J.F. Lawton’s downbeat prostitute/john tale “Three Thousand” into a sumptuous rom-com, to the profit of all concerned. Its newest incarnation sanitizes the tale completely. With anything mature or sensual systematically removed, “Pretty Woman: The Musical” goes all-in on fantasy, casting two sizzling talents, Samantha Barks and Andy Karl, as bland, pretty people singing pretty Bryan Adams-Jim Vallance tunes with nothing much at stake. Stubbornly inconsequential, it’s a morally uplifting fairy tale of which everyone, young and old alike, can be skeptical.

The Lawton-Marshall libretto fundamentally sticks to the screenplay line by line, joke by joke. Multimillionaire corporate raider Edward Lewis (Karl) hops in a brand-new 1989 Lotus Esprit and, in an impulse maybe only Hugh Grant could explain, whisks streetwalker Vivian Ward (Barks) from Hollywood Blvd.

Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman (1990)
Broadway’s Pretty Woman: The Musical showed other summer newcomers how it’s done. Average ticket price was a solid $141.

Based on the 1990 Julia Roberts & Richard Gere movie and staged at the Nederlander Theater, the musical features direction and choreography by Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots), an original score by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, and a book by the movie’s director Garry Marshall and screenwriter J.F. Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman (1990)
‘Pretty Woman’ Musical Finds Its Man: Andy Karl Cast In Broadway Production
Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman (1990)
Three-time Tony Award nominee Andy Karl, last seen on Broadway in Groundhog Day, has been cast as the male lead in the upcoming Pretty Woman: The Musical. He’ll play Edward Lewis (Richard Gere in the 1990 movie) opposite Samantha Barks’ Vivian (the role that made a superstar of Julia Roberts).

Karl, who won an Olivier Award for the London production of Groundhog Day and also starred in Broadway’s Saturday Night Fever, replaces Steve Kazee, who left the Pretty Woman production for family reasons, according to producers.

The new musical, which begins performances July 20 at the Nederlander Theatre, also stars Karl’s real-life wife Orfeh, a Tony nominee for Legally Blonde. Karl had seen the show in pre-Broadway workshops and the Chicago run.

“I always figured I’d be playing the part of ‘audience member’ for Pretty Woman,” Karl said. “When Paula Wagner and my longtime friend, Jerry Mitchell, asked...

Samantha Barks at an event for The EE British Academy Film Awards (2014)
Pre-Broadway Review: ‘Pretty Woman: The Musical’
Samantha Barks at an event for The EE British Academy Film Awards (2014)
The moment Samantha Barks smiles and sings near the beginning of this musical adaptation of the film “Pretty Woman,” we know things are going to be Ok. The sense that this show — not exactly a match with the #MeToo era — has missed its cultural moment never completely disappears but it does dissipate, becoming at least semi-irrelevant when confronted with Barks’ big personality and even bigger voice. She proves highly capable of sweeping us up, if not completely away, into this faithfully scripted (by the movie’s late director Garry Marshall and original screenwriter J.F. Lawton), blandly scored (by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance), capably but not imaginatively directed (by Jerry Mitchell) version of the 1990 mega hit that launched Julia Roberts into stratospheric superstardom.

Barks (Eponine in the film version of “Les Miserables”) plays Vivian Ward, the Hollywood Boulevard prostitute who melts the frozen heart of corporate raider Edward Lewis, played in the movie,...

The men want their avocados; the evil feminist cannibal piranha women have control of the avocado jungle, what will we do? That’s right; send Shannon Tweed in to save the day. If you think that’s corny then you will totally understand what Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death is aiming for…

Offering a reservation condo complex in Malibu in return of the jungle they hope to placate the feministic women and get to the fruit which is dangerously low in stock. Hiring an a-typical male chauvinistic pig as their her guide and being assisted...

Pretty Woman Screenwriter J.F. Lawton Reveals the Iconic Rom-Com Was First "Dark and Gritty"
Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman (1990)
Big mistake. Big. Huge! 25 years ago romantic comedy Pretty Woman hit theaters and changed the fairy tale game for good — but according to the iconic film’s screenwriter J.F. Lawton, the Julia Roberts’ flick was originally written as “dark and gritty.” “I was a screenwriter who was trying to get a job, I was unemployed and I was working in post-production and I was trying to sell scripts, and I had been writing all of these ninja scripts and comedies, and I just couldn’t get any [...]...

'Pretty Woman': 25 Things You Didn't Know About the Julia Roberts Classic
No one expected much from "Pretty Woman" when they were making it. It was a modestly-budgeted romantic comedy whose stars were Richard Gere (then in the depths of a career slump) and Eric Roberts's kid sister. But when the movie was released, 25 years ago this week (on March 23, 1990), the project was transformed from overlooked stepsister to box office royalty. Mirroring her on-screen Cinderella makeover, Julia Roberts went from little-known ingenue to queen of Hollywood. Plus, the film saved Gere's career and (along with 1989's "When Harry Met Sally") revived the romantic comedy genre in Hollywood.

A quarter-century later, "Pretty Woman" remains a fan favorite, one you've seen a million times on cable. Even so, there's much you may not know about the movie -- the difficulties in casting (Gere and Roberts weren't anyone's first, second, or third choices), crises on the set, what was left out of the final film,...

Pretty Woman Was Supposed To Be A Much Grittier Film
P { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }A:link { } It's the 25th anniversary of Pretty Woman and as a result, we're looking back at the romantic comedy responsible for launching the amazingly successful career of its leading lady Julia Roberts. Among the many interesting details surrounding the Gary Marshall-directed film is the fact that it was initially supposed to be much, much grittier. In remembering the 1990 film Pretty Woman, fans probably likely recall it as a delightful romance story following the wealthy businessman and silver fox Edward Lewis (Richard Gere), who falls for his incredibly lovable escort with a heart of gold, Vivian Ward (Roberts). While that's essentially what the movie became, it wasn't always so glossy and romantic. In fact the film wasn't even originally supposed to be a romantic comedy, but rather a dark drama. According to Yahoo Movies, the original script written by J.F. Lawton was actually titled $3,000, in reference ...

Garry Marshall On ‘The Odd Couple’ & ‘Pretty Woman’ The Broadway Musical – Conversations With Jeremy Gerard
Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman (1990)
Updates with Runaway Bride and Jack Klugman fixes.

Exclusive: “ ‘Eff You!’ ” I answered. Garry Marshall already knew when he asked me, but he wanted to see whether I knew what I was talking about. We were discussing Neil Simon, who I said had written the all-time funniest line ever. “Which line?” Marshall asked. “F.U.,” I answered.

“I can’t take it anymore, Felix, I’m cracking up. Everything you do irritates me. And when you’re not here, the things I know you’re gonna do when you come in irritate me. You leave me little notes on my pillow. Told you 158 times I can’t stand little notes on my pillow. “We’re all out of cornflakes. F.U.” Took me three hours to figure out F.U. was Felix Ungar!”

Marshall concurs and reminds me that the line is from the Broadway script of The Odd Couple...

Get Ready for a 'Pretty Woman' Musical
Zip up your thigh-high boots and crank the Roy Orbison: "Pretty Woman" is strutting on over to Broadway.

Garry Marshall, who directed the 1990 film that made star Julia Roberts a household name, is working with a team of Hollywood heavyweights on turning "Pretty Woman" into a musical, and are currently seeking a composer, lyricist, and stage director to join the creative process. Marshall and the movie's co-screenwriter, J.F. Lawton, are currently at work on the book, and veteran Broadway producer Paula Wagner will back the project.

Fans of the hooker with a heart of gold story shouldn't get their hopes up too high just yet, though. Variety reports that a musical version of "Woman" has been in the works since at least 2001, and without any songwriters on board yet, it will be at least a few years before a finalized stage show can materialize.

Still, Marshall has been involved...

Pretty Woman Could Become A Broadway Musical
Word that Pretty Woman could be making its way to the Broadway stage in musical form may have some of us already imagining musical versions of Natalie Cole's "Wild Women Do" and Christopher Otcasek's "Real Wild Child," but we may be getting ahead of ourselves in hoping that any of the music from the film's soundtrack will be worked into stage production. At this point, it sounds like this project is still in the talks stage. It's not a sure thing, but plans are reportedly in the works to bring Pretty Woman to the stage. In fact, NY Post says Pretty Woman director Garry marshall and producer Paula Wagner are meeting with composers, lyricists and directors, "all of whom are vying to bring 'Pretty Woman' to the stage." The site goes on to note that J.F. Lawton, who wrote the screenplay for the 1990 hit film, is...
