Sandrine Kiberlain and Pierre Lottin are set to headline Jean-Baptiste Leonetti’s French comedy-drama Whatever It Takes (Personne d’Autre) as polar opposites who connect under strange circumstances. The film will begin shooting in the Paris region at the end of the month.

Lottin plays Jean, a stubborn single in his thirties who has shut himself off from the world. When he meets Kiberlain’s Rose, a mother of three with a disarming joie de vivre, the two form an unlikely pairing. Ugc will release the film in France in 2026.

In 2011, French thesps Omar Sy and Anne Le Ny co-starred in the comedy hit “Untouchable.” Now, the two are reunited in the domestic thriller “Out of Control,” with “Lupin” star Sy in one of the leading roles next to Elodie Bouchez, José Garcia and Vanessa Paradis, while Le Ny serves as director and Axella Cachman’s co-writer.

The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (known as PÖFF) has unveiled the full lineup of its flagship Official Selection, whose 18 features from 23 countries will compete for the coveted €20,000 Grand Prix.

They include 11 world premieres. The jury is helmed by acclaimed German director Christoph Hochhäusler.

Tiina Lokk, the founder and director of the festival, said “the Official Selection Competition has it all! There’s a psycho-thriller that approaches horror, a psychological family drama, and sci-fi genre is represented. The selection is broad, and so is the range of countries. We’re not trying to highlight a certain theme or a particular region, we are free in our choices,” she noted.

Emphasizing the various topics covered, Lokk cites old age, the end of life and euthanasia “perhaps due to the influence of Covid,” domestic violence and war, “not tackled in the traditional form” but rather via psychological dramas.

Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (Poff) has selected a further 14 features, including 11 world premieres, to complete the lineup of its Official Selection Competition.

The new titles include the world premiere of Serhii Kastornykh’s Ukrainian feature The Mousetrap. Shot during a break between Kastornykh’s military service periods, the film follows a soldier trapped alone in a bunker on the frontline of the Russian war.

MPM Premium has acquired international rights to Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Pease’s queer coming-of-age drama Fine Young Men.

The film is set in a Catholic school and follows a young boy who develops a crush on another male student. It is produced by Mexico’s Pisito Trece Producciones, Home Films, Alameda, Zamora, Bhd, Malvalada, France’s Local Films, and Spain’s Televisión Española.

MPM’s Cannes slate also includes Marie Rémond’s starry romantic comedy Vanishing Goats in which Remond writes, directs and stars in her first feature opposite José Garcia, Gustave Kervern, Olivia Cote, Anne Le Ny and Lolita Chammah.

Dany Boon and Audrey Fleurot are setting sail for See The Sea, Emmanuel Poulain-Arnaud’s family comedy-drama adapted from hit Mexican film Ya Veremos, and Snd will kick off sales in Cannes.

Actor-director Boon, known for box office hits Welcome To The Sticks and Driving Madeleine, and Fleurot play a divorced couple forced to put aside their differences on an oceanside trip when their son begins to go blind.

Snd will kick off sales for marriage thriller at Rendez-Vous in Paris.

Snd has taken on international sales for Anne Le Ny’s psychological thriller Out Of Control (Histoire d’Un Mariage) starring Vanessa Paradis, Omar Sy, José Garcia and Elodie Bouchez, ahead of Unifrance’s Rendez-Vous with French Cinema.

Set in Brittany, the story follows a couple whose marriage is threatened when the husband’s first love returns to town.

It is produced by Bruno Levy’s Move Movie, with Snd releasing in France later this year. Snd is the film arm of France’s M6 Group.

Gaumont and Egerie Productions have announced they are teaming with Prime Video on heartwarming French-language drama My Mother, God, And Sylvie Vartan, which is the platform’s first French-language feature destined for a theatrical release.

The picture is adapted from the autobiographical novel of French radio and TV presenter Roland Perez and is inspired by his strong-minded Sephardic Jewish mother’s determination that he would live a full life after he was born with a clubfoot.

Her self-sacrifice and a consuming passion for the music of popular singer Sylvie Vartan enabled her son to achieve his dreams despite his difference.

Canadian director and screenwriter Ken Scott is attached to direct and also wrote the screenplay, adaptation and dialogue.

Filming will take place in Paris between September and November 2023

Leïla Bekhti and Jonathan Cohen lead the cast.

Prime Video and Gaumont (“Intouchables”) are teaming up on an uplifting mother-son drama tackling disability, directed by Ken Scott (“Starbuck”), and starring French actors Leïla Bekhti (“All Your Faces”) and Jonathan Cohen (“Sentinelle”). Scott penned and will be directing the film which is titled “Ma mère, Dieu et Sylvie Vartan” and is based on Roland Perez’s novel by the same name.

The project is the first theatrical film that Amazon Prime Video is co-financing as part of the French decree that kicked off in July 2021 and stems from the implementation of the European Commission’s legislation called Audiovisual Media Services Directive (Avms). As such, Gaumont will release the film theatrically in France and holds all distribution rights in France and internationally (outside of Canada). “Ma mère, Dieu et Sylvie Vartan” will roll out on Prime Video 17 months after its theatrical release under France’s windowing rules.

Exclusive: Deutschland 83 co-creator Jörg Winger’s latest drama series Ouija has added Starzplay as co-producer and the show has set cast, Deadline can reveal.

Co-created by Thomas Bourguignon (Réunions), the France Télévisions series was one of the first development projects detailed when Winger unveiled the Fremantle-backed Big Window Productions, which sits within his former company UFA Fiction. Ouija is co-produced by Big Window and Kwaï, another Fremantle label. Bourguignon is directing.

Principal photography has kicked off in Nice and the surrounding area, with Ophelia Kolb, Katharina Schüttler, Stefan Konarske and Bruno Solo set to lead.

The fast-paced supernatural coming-of-age story recalls the creators’ time partaking in German-French exchange programs.

Set against the backdrop of a generational saga, the six-parter focuses on such an exchange taking place during the 1982 football World Cup but tells the story of characters from three generations – one who fought during World War Two, one...

Snd is set to host market premieres for Patrice Leconte’s period detective film “Maigret,” as well as high concept comedies “Employee of the Month” and “The Bodins” at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris, a showcase of French content hosted this week in Paris.

“Maigret,” based on Georges Simenon’s literary masterpiece, will star Gérard Depardieu (“Cyrano de Bergerac”) as detective Maigret, who investigates the death of a young girl in 1953. During his inquiry, Maigret crosses paths with Betty, a young offender who reminds him of the dead girl. The movie will be released by Snd on April 6.

“We’ve pre-sold ‘Maigret’ across 90% of Europe, it’s really a highlight on our slate due to the strength of the franchise, director and cast – Gerard Depardieu is outstanding in this role,” said Ramy Nahas, head of international sales at Snd.

Chomet: I really wanted to do a film which was about music but not to be obviously to be a film where everyone suddenly bursts into song - although there's a couple of scenes like that Sylvain Chomet has made his first full-length foray into live action features with Attila Marcel, after previously contributing a vignette to Paris Je t'Aime. The film considers the nature of memory as its silent protagonist Paul (Guillaume Gouix), steps back in time with the help of his neighbour to try to recall the childhood trauma that left him mute. Whimsy and melancholy blend together to make this a heady but satisfying brew that features terrific performances from a supporting cast including Anne Le Ny and the late Bernadette Lafont. I caught up with Chomet before his film opened the 2013 French Film Festival in Edinburgh to talk about his latest work.

How did it feel...

French director Sylvain Chomet has an incredible four Academy Award nominations to his name, renowned for his distinguishable, ingenious animations such as The Triplets of Belleville, and The Illusionist. He now returns with his very first live action feature with Attila Marcel, remaining faithful to his own brand, bringing that sense of enchantment and striking, vibrant visual experience to the viewer, as you feel that every single object, or colour implemented, has been done so meticulously, for a certain, desired effect.

Another similarity comes in the form of a silent protagonist, which had served Chomet’s preceding endeavour so well. This time the character is Paul (Guillaume Gouix), a piano virtuoso, who has never once spoken a word following the untimely, mysterious death of his parents when he was just a toddler. Now, living with his two eccentric aunts, he becomes spiritually entwined with his next door neighbour Madame Proust (Anne Le Ny), who,...

When you love a filmmaker, it’s always exciting to see them stretch outside of their comfort zone. In the case of Sylvain Chomet, there was something undeniably fascinating about the idea of the man who made Triplets Of Bellville and The Illusionist trying his hand at a live-action filmmaker this year at The Toronto International Film Festival. After all, his aesthetic is so distinct, yet still identifiably based on the real world that it was easy to imagine Chomet being one of those live-action cartoon directors like Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, or even his countryman Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Sadly, based on his live action debut Attila Marcel, it might be best if Chomet sticks to the animation arena. Maybe it’s just that the script and concept for this were the misfire regardless of format, but even so Chomet’s sense of whimsy doesn’t seem to fly when applied to real people and locations.

In 2003, Sylvain Chomet suddenly popped up on arthouse radars with his first animated feature The Triplets of Belville. Critics praised the film for its inventiveness, attention to detail, soundtrack, and just sheer delightful weirdness. Chomet’s next feature was 2010’s The Illusionist (not to be mistaken for the big twist magician caper starring Edward Norton), a dialogue-free animated film about a friendship between a washed-up magician and a young girl. Though The Illusionist is far more melancholy and sometimes outright sad than Triplets, the inventiveness, attention to detail, soundtrack and whimsy were still there. Chomet’s newest film Attila Marcel once again succeeds because it brings those same elements that worked so well in his previous two features, combines the different tones of those films, and then finally applies them to a new format for Chomet: live-action filmmaking.

Frederick Wiseman’s Film Festival—now that would be something perfect for capturing the Tiff experience, with its swarms of filmmakers and volunteers and reviewers, its exhilaration and exhaustion. Then again, that festival might also be the granola screening room seen early on in Kelly Reichardt’s Night Moves, where perfunctory applause for a cinematic eco-pamphlet is followed by an awkward Q&A session straight out of Wiseman’s High School.

The scene smartly situates its protagonists, young activists played by Jesse Eisenberg and Dakota Fanning, as alienated not just from mainstream society but also from potential alternatives—on the fringe of the fringes, a familiar position for Reichardt’s characters. Their more radical form of protest (the bombing of a Portland dam) is revealed languidly, shard by shard, in a series of concise interactions stressing process (how to buy 500 pounds of ammonium nitrate fertilizer without the proper documentation?...

Keaton-esque Amelie (or Whimsical Pianist)

French director Sylvain Chomet has delighted audiences with his droll animated films The Triplets of Belleville and The Illusionist, earning repeated comparisons to the distinctive masterful works of Jacques Tati. His first foray in directing a live action feature, Attila Marcel, will undoubtedly divide filmgoers with its hallucinogenic induced musical numbers and blankly mute lead character Paul (Guillaume Gouix, who in both looks and demeanor apes Buster Keaton expertly), but will certainly leave them rapturously yearning for more from Chomet.

The film jars its audience and prepares them for its whimsical absurdities by opening with a melodious romp by the titular Attila Marcel (also played by Guillaume Gouix) whose bell bottomed loose attire recalls the costumes of Saturday Night Fever and who passes characters blatantly mimicking those from musicals Grease and Jesus Christ Superstar. While the North American animation stage is largely dominated by Disney, the international stage remains a wide open field, with many filmmakers creating well-regarded animated works. One such filmmaker is Sylvain Chomet, whose 2003 feature film debut The Triplets of Belleville catapulted his critical profile, which was aided by his second feature The Illusionist. With both his prior films being animated, Chomet thus raised some eyebrows when he announced that his next film would be a live-action feature. Titled Attila Marcel, Chomet takes on writing and directing duties, working with a cast that includes Guillaume Gouix and Anne Le Ny. Filmmaker Tom Shadyac is in talks to take the helm on The Intouchables English-language remake for The Weinstein Company. Colin Firth is said to be circling a lead role, but nothing has been solidified at this time. Silver Linings Playbook returns Chris Tucker to the big screen with his first role in five years. It's been a long wait since 2007's Rush Hour 3, but the comedic actor doesn't plan on taking another long break. He's already eyeing his next project, an American remake of the French comedy The Intouchables, which follows an ex-con (Omar Sy) who takes a job caring for a wealthy quadriplegic (Fran&#231ois Cluzet).

Here's what he had to say in a recent interview, when asked if he was actually considering the project.

"I've seen it and yes, I have been talking with them (producers) about doing it. I hope something will come out of it because I really like the movie and they are in the process of getting it together. So there's a possibility that it might happen."

The Intouchables has earned over $400 million worldwide, starring Fran&#231ois Cluzet and Ceasar award winner Omar Sy.

The film flies on the performances of Francois Cluzet as the rich guy and newcomer Omar Sy as his attendant. The two have a terrific chemistry, especially in the quieter moments. Filmmakers Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano took some liberties with the real story, and in some instances the caregiver character is made to be more miraculous than his background, but overall they honor the unusual pairing with perspective on race, class, immigration and the sorrows of handicap. Represented are the overt physical limitations and the not-so-apparent psychological ones.

Chicago – One of the great international films from France, which had nine nominations at The 2012 Cesars – the French equivalent of the Oscars – is the intimate relationship film “The Intouchables.” Focusing on a handicapped man and his caregiver, it was created by Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache.

The story is unusual because it features two men who are trapped by their own handicaps, and is based on a true story. Philippe (Francois Cluzet) is a wealthy man who is paralyzed from the neck down after a para-gliding accident, and Driss (Omar Sy) is a poor immigrant who is angry at the world for his lot in life. Together they help each other out of the pain and challenges they face, simply by connecting in an odd brotherhood.

The Weinstein Company (TWC) will release The Intouchables in theaters on May 25. The three minute short film, which came to fruition following an original idea by Stella McCartney, stars Academy Award winner Natalie Portman and Golden Globe winner Johnny Depp.

PARIS -- Love was in the air as Chico Teixeira's Brazilian film "A casa de Alice" won the Golden Swann prize for best film at the 22nd Cabourg Romantic Film Festival, which wrapped Sunday night in the French seaside town.

A jury presided by filmmaker Jean-Pierre Denis named Patrick Bruel best actor for his role in Claude Miller's Holocaust drama "A Secret". Gallic actress Laetitia Casta took home the best actress award for her performance in Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau's dramatic comedy "Nes en 68" (Born in '68).

Other members of the fest's jury included director-actresses Anne Le Ny and Maiwenn, actresses Claire Nebout, Lolita Chammah and Hafsia Herzi, actor Clement Sibony and writer Emmanuelle Cosso-Merad.

Emmanuel Mouret won the best director award for "Un baiser, s'il vous plait" (A kiss, please). "Welcome to the Sticks" star Anne Marivin was named most promising actress and Yannick Renier was given the most promising actor prize for his role in "Nes en 68".
