French TV Screenings: ‘Agatha Christie’s Criminal Games’ & ‘Syndrome E’ Sell As Sky Italia, Canada’s CBC & Others Swoop

Exclusive: Sky Italia and CBC are among the international buyers swooping for Gallic content following last week’s inaugural French TV Screenings.

Local distributors are calling the event a success and are hopeful it will become a fixture in the international calendar.

Nine French sales houses held screenings events over two days as part of Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris at the Club de l’Etoile. With 106 buyers in town, deals were always likely. Deadline has learned Newen Connect and France TV Distribution were among those to strike international sales.

France TV Distribution sold library title Agatha Christie’s Criminal Games to Sky Italia Seasons 1 and 2. First airing in France in 2009, the light crime drama is a French adaptation of novelist Agatha Christie’s murder mystery stories.

‘Animals’ And ‘Black Pond’ Producer Sarah Brocklehurst Launches UK Studio; Ties With BBC Studios

BAFTA-nominated Black Pond and Animals producer Sarah Brocklehurst has launched a production company and struck a partnership deal with BBC Studios. BBC Studios will help develop, produce and distribute Brock Media’s content, which will include TV and film projects for global audiences. BBC Studios has the option to take an equity stake further down the line, having invested in several drama indies recently such as Brexit: The Uncivil War’s House Productions and The End Of The F***ing World’s Clerkenwell Films. Brocklehurst’s Animals was nominated for two BIFAs and she previously picked up an Outstanding Debut BAFTA nom for 2012’s Black Pond. She has hired former ITV and Big Talk exec Katie Brown as Head of Development, Empress Films’ Rohina Cameron-Perera as Associate Producer and Film4’s Mélys Codo as Development Executive.

Netflix/ITV Thriller ‘Marcella’ Set For French Remake From TF1

Netflix/ITV’s hit thriller “Marcella” is set for a French adaptation produced by Elephant and commissioned by TF1. The deal was made by Cineflix Rights which has exclusive worldwide rights to the new series.

Hans Rosenfeldt’s “Marcella” was produced by Buccaneer Media and stars Anna Friel who won an International Emmy Award for her role in the series. Season 3 of “Marcella” is currently available on Netflix and will premiere on ITV in the U.K. the fall.

“Rebecca,” the French adaptation of “Marcella,” will be directed by Didier Le Pêcheur (“Innocents”), and was co-written by Le Pêcheur and Delphine Labouret (“Innocents”). The eight-part series is being produced by Elephant (Gaëlle Cholet and Sandra Ouaiss), and begins shooting this month around Paris.

‘Marcella’: Anna Friel Drama To Be Adapted By France’s TF1

TF1 is going to make a French version of Marcella, the ITV drama starring Anna Friel and written by Hans Rosenfeldt, creator of the original Swedish/Danish co-production The Bridge.

Buccaneer Media’s show will be reimagined by Elephant and will be titled Rebecca. The deal to adapt the show was struck by Cineflix Rights, which will also distribute Rebecca internationally.

The series is directed by Didier Le Pêcheur (Innocents) and co-written by Le Pêcheur and Delphine Labouret (Innocents). Anne Marivin will lead the cast. The eight-part series begins shooting this month around Paris.

Marcella ran for three seasons on ITV and was billed as Scandinavian noir on the streets of Britain. It delved into the psychology of the troubled detective Marcella (Friel) as she investigates a serial murder case upon returning to duty after a 10-year hiatus.

BBC Studios France to remake 'Doctor Foster'
French production arm lands first scripted order.

BBC Studios’ French production arm is to remake Doctor Foster in France in its first scripted production for the region.

French broadcaster TF1 has ordered a 6 x 52-minute version of the drama and will begin filming this month in Biarritz and the Nouvelle Aquitaine region.

BBC Studios will co-produce the show with French indie Storia Télévision.

It was previously reported that Luc Besson’s seven-year-old studio EuropaCorp TV would adapt the drama after optioning the rights last year with an eye on co-producing with BBC France, but the business has since exited the project.

Suranne Jones in Doctor Foster: A Woman Scorned (2015)
British infidelity drama Doctor Foster is being remade in France with Claire Keim (Insoupçonnable) taking on the main role made famous by Suranne Jones.

The series, which tells the story of a woman who finds out her husband is having an affair and the subsequent chaos it causes, is being produced for French commercial broadcaster TF1.

It is being produced by Storia Télévision, the French business that acquired a number of the television assets of Luc Besson’s Europacorp earlier this year and is owned by Mediawan, set up by French entrepreneurs Pierre-Antoine Capton, Xavier Niel and Matthieu Pigasse. It had previously emerged last year that Besson’s firm would produce a local adaptation of Doctor Foster. It is being produced in association with BBC Studios’ French production division. The six-part series will begin filming this month in Biarritz and in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region.
