Charter Communications Says Damage To Its Cables In Van Nuys, CA Was “Domestic Terrorism”
Image
Leading pay-tv and broadband provider Charter Communications says its internal probe into a June 15 attack on its network in Van Nuys, CA has determined it was “an act of domestic terrorism.”

Citing “the nature of the fiber cuts, extent of damage and makeup of impacted customers,” the company called for stronger federal and state legislation to protect first responders, military bases and other institutions.

The early morning attack saw 13 cables severed, spanning more than 2600 individual fibers, a Charter investigation found. The cuts affected emergency services, including a U.S. military base, emergency dispatch and 911 communication services, and local fire and police departments. Also hit were financial institutions, court buildings, healthcare facilities and hospitals, educational institutions, as well as cell towers providing mobile services.

In all, more than 50,000 residential customers and more than 500 business customers lost service for up to 30 hours, Charter said. Citing industry research, the company said that between...

Joe Manganiello, Who Starred in ‘Pee-wee’s Big Holiday,’ Chokes Up Remembering Late Friend Paul Reubens: “I Was His Biggest Fan”
Image
There’s renewed interest in the life and career of Paul Reubens thanks to the critically acclaimed two-part documentary Pee-Wee as Himself from HBO Max.

The film, from filmmaker Matt Wolf, recently hit the streamer after a world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Wolf worked closely with Reubens in pulling together the project, culled from more than 40 hours of on-camera interviews and 1,000 hours of archival footage and shaped over what turned out to be an emotional rollercoaster lasting four years.

On the heels of Sundance revealing the 2025 lineup last December, The Hollywood Reporter happened to be on Zoom with Joe Manganiello to discuss the latest season of his buzzy new reality competition series Deal or No Deal Island. As the interview was winding down, THR asked Manganiello about the documentary and Reubens, someone he got to know quite well when he filmed a starring role in Netflix’s 2016 film Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday.

Image
Loosely inspired by the real-life Mountain Meadows Massacre, Netflix’s limited series, American Primeval, tells the story of Sara Rowell and her young son, Devin, who get caught up in the crossfire between the Mormon Militia and the settlers. Sara was going to see her husband in Crooks Springs, California, and she needed a guide who could help her cross the Utah Territory. At Fort Bridger, unable to find a guide, Sara and Devin joined Jacob Pratt and his Mormon group, who were headed in the same direction. While traveling West towards California, the mother-son duo finally came across the Baker–Fancher party, a wagon train, who had set up a camp at Mountain Meadows where the real-life massacre took place on 7th September 1857.

Interior Chinatown TV Review: Jimmy O. Yang is a reluctant sleuth in the Taika Waititi-directed comedy noir
Image
Plot: Based on Charles Yu’s award-winning book of the same name, the show follows the story of Willis Wu, a background character trapped in a police procedural called Black & White. Relegated to the background, Willis goes through the motions of his on-screen job, waiting tables, dreaming about a world beyond Chinatown and aspiring to be the lead of his own story. When Willis inadvertently becomes a witness to a crime, he begins to unravel a criminal web in Chinatown, while discovering his own family’s buried history and what it feels like to be in the spotlight.

Review: Interior Chinatown is an interesting approach to telling a meta-fictional story. Rather than breaking the fourth wall or setting a story within a story, this series takes the approach of interconnecting characters often relegated to the background and showing how they can break free of their stereotypical and cliche constraints to...

10 Unsettling Psychological Horror Movies From Before The 2000s That Still Hit Hard
Image
Psychological horror possesses a unique ability to infiltrate viewers' minds, using subtle dread and mental manipulation in place of classic jump scares. While modern films continue to explore similar themes, some of the most disturbing psychological horror films from before the year 2000 remain deeply haunting folk horror movies or films devoid of classic monsters. This proves that true terror often stems from psychological torment and suspense rather than outlandish visual effects or gore.

By focusing on everything from twisted family relationships to mounting paranoia, these titles laid the foundation for some of the best psychological horror movies, showcasing a staying power that keeps them relevant decades later. Through skilled direction, compelling performances, and themes tapping into basic human fears, they unsettle audiences as effectively today as they did when they were released. Although contemporary horror reflects their influence, these originals, and often cult horror movies, retain a distinctive potency that hasnt yet faded.

Jimmy O. Yang Kicks Serious Ass in Trailer for Taika Waititi Hulu Series ‘Interior Chinatown’
Image
Jimmy O. Yang doesn’t code for Erlich Bachman no more.

On Tuesday, Hulu released the trailer for “Interior Chinatown,” its wild action-comedy series based on Charles Yu’s book of the same name. Yang, who plays a mild-mannered waiter, is about to get way in over his head.

But first, he exists in total mundanity.

“In Chinatown, nothing ever changes,” Willis Wu (Yang) says to open the trailer. “Nothing exciting ever happens to me or you or anyone we know.”

“I feel like I’m a background character in someone else’s story,” Wu continues.

Well, he’s definitely — and precisely — right about that last part.

“Interior Chinatown” follows Wu, a background character stuck in a police procedural called “Black & White.” This may sound weird, but the show has a definite “Wreck-It Ralph” vibe.

“Relegated to the background, Willis goes through the motions of his on-screen job, waiting tables,...

Jimmy O. Yang Steps Out of the Background in ‘Interior Chinatown’ Trailer | Video
Image
Jimmy O. Yang is stepping out of the background and into the action in “Interior Chinatown.”

In the trailer for “Interior Chinatown,” Yang’s Willis Wu laments that he lives a relatively simple life, feeling like a background character as he works at a restaurant in Chinatown, when in fact, he has unknowingly been relegated to the background of a police procedural titled “Black & White.”

“Nothing ever changes — nothing exciting ever happens to me or you or anyone we know,” Yang’s Willis tells to his coworker and friend, found in Ronny Chieng. “I feel like I’m a background character in someone else’s story.”

Just as soon as he can blink, Willis’ fate changes as he’s plunged into the action when he inadvertently witnesses a crime outside the restaurant.

Cue Chloe Bennet’s Detective Lana Lee, who, after being solely viewed on the TV by Willis and his cowowkers,...

Glen Powell, Anthony Mackie & Laura Dern Movie ‘Monsanto’ Pre-Sells To Netflix WW In $30M+ Cannes Market Deal
Image
Netflix has tied up a deal in the $34M range for the John Lee Hancock-directed package Monsanto, we can reveal. The pic will star Glen Powell, Anthony Mackie and Oscar winner Laura Dern.

CAA Media Finance cut the presale after launching with Rocket Science last week. Netflix has been quieter at recent markets but is back at the table with the splashy deal.

Monsanto tells the true story of young, untried attorney Brent Wisner (Powell), who takes on a seemingly insurmountable case against the giant U.S. chemical company Monsanto on behalf of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson (Mackie) who used Monsanto’s best-known product Roundup, a wildly financially successful weed and grass pesticide killer, as part...

Joe Biden
Los Angeles City Councilman John Lee is facing accusations today from the city Ethics Commission of violating governmental ethics laws by accepting and failing to report excessive gifts, including some received during a trip to Las Vegas in 2017 that he took along with former Councilman Mitch Englander.

In 2020. Englander pleaded guilty and was sentenced to federal prison for lying to federal investigators looking into his alleged receipt of excessive cash and gifts. Lee served as Englander’s chief of staff prior to being elected to the City Council.

“In 2016 and 2017, including during a 2017 trip to Las Vegas, Lee accepted multiple gifts from a businessperson and a developer, most of which exceeded the gift limit,” maintains a statement from the city Ethics Commission. “Lee failed to publicly disclose those gifts on the California statement of economic interests (Form 700) that he was required to file when he left city service, and he...

Paul Reuben's Face In Pee-Wee's Big Holiday Was A Big Fake Out
Image
The late, great comedian Paul Reubens first started developing his popular Pee-wee Herman character while working for the Groundlings, a comedy troupe in Los Angeles. They famously encouraged comedians to invent wild, outsize characters that would provide comedy in any situation they entered. Reubens' Pee-wee character caught the attention of the local -- then the national -- comedy scene, leading to a long-running live show. Eventually, Pee-wee became the star of three feature films. Tim Burton's "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" was released in 1985, Randal Kleiser's "Big Top Pee-wee" was released in 1988, and John Lee's "Pee-wee's Big Holiday" was released on Netflix in 2016.

The third of those films came after Reubens had experienced multiple career highs and lows, having starred in a hit TV series, then having retreated from the public eye in the 1990s because of a very public arrest. Reubens returned to film in a big way...

‘God Is a Bullet’ Review: Nihilistic Revenge Thriller Doesn’t Believe in Anything — Including Plot
Image
A movie about a pair of unlikely friends teaming up to infiltrate a cult is always going to rest on two things: the friends having chemistry and the cult being interesting. You’d really prefer to have both of those elements working for you, but a filmmaker can get by as long as one of them is strong. Unfortunately for everyone involved, “God Is a Bullet” has neither.

Nick Cassavetes’ adaptation of Boston Teran’s novel of the same name is an ambitious mess that features wild highs (a snake doing meth!) and impossibly dull lows (most everything else). Overly long and gratuitously violent, the bloated revenge thriller seems obsessed with reminding us of how much evil is in the world without showing the slightest bit of interest in explaining how it got there.

The one thing everyone in Detective Bob Hightower’s (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) life can agree on is...

‘God Is a Bullet’ Review: Jamie Foxx and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in Nick Cassavetes’ Brutal — and Brutally Silly — Thriller
Image
Revenge thrillers tend to be most effective when they’re lean and mean. Such is definitely not the case with the new film from writer-director Nick Cassavetes, his first since 2014’s The Other Woman. Based on Boston Teran’s well-received 1999 novel, God Is a Bullet squanders its provocative premise with a ridiculously bloated running time (155 minutes, and you feel every one of them) and gratuitous violence that lends a cartoonish sheen to a story aspiring to gritty realness. Despite its talented cast, who demonstrate a willingness to go for broke in their portrayals, the film comes across like a pretentious version of an ‘80s-era Charles Bronson actioner.

Actually, Bronson would have been perfect for the role of detective Bob Hightower (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), whose ex-wife and her new husband are brutally murdered by the members of a cult who seemed to have watched The Hills Have Eyes too many times. In...

Dire Warning Sounded as Hong Kong Film Industry Slowdown Continues
Image
The once vibrant Hong Kong film industry is struggling to recover from the effects of Covid and related problems, a local report has warned.

The report identified problems with theatrical box office, local production, co-production with mainland China and film investment.

The Motion Picture Industry Association and Hong Kong Box Office Ltd. regular half year report showed that cinemas in the city had been closed for 104 days this year, including Chinese New Year and Easter, both normally peak periods. Capacity restrictions remain in place as city authorities waver between trying to reopen the economy and a ‘dynamic zero’ Covid policy.

Actual cinema revenues in the first six month were little changed at HK357 million (45.5 million), compared with HK376 million (47.9 million). But only because the first half of 2021 was similarly affected by restrictions and cinemas were only open for 48 days.

The organizations note that box office takings were 66 lower than the...

Interview: Author Joe Ballarini Discusses A Babysitter’S Guide To Monster Hunting and the Upcoming Film Adaptation
If you've read my work on Daily Dead or listened to my ramblings on the Corpse Club podcast, then you might be aware of my deep love for Dance of the Dead, Gregg Bishop's midnight movie masterpiece that blended prom, zombies, and the music of Pat Benatar (via a great cover) into one of the most memorable rentals I ever enjoyed from Blockbuster. When I saw that Joe Ballarini, the screenwriter of Dance of the Dead, had written a new book (for children and adults) called A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting, I knew that I had to talk with him about it, and I recently had the great pleasure of doing just that.

In addition to A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting—the first in a planned three-book series from Katherine Tegen Books (an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers)—Ballarini also discussed his plans for the future installments in...

‘Pee-wee’s Big Holiday’ Director John Lee on Being the Right Kind of Monster [SXSW Interview]
Director John Lee seems, at first, to be an odd fit for a Pee-wee Herman movie. With writing and directing credits that include Wonder Showzen, Inside Amy Schumer, Broad City, and The Heart, She Holler, Lee seems to exist in a darker, more pointed universe than the colorful, silly world of Paul Reubens‘ iconic character. But as […]

Joe Manganiello
Review: 'Pee-Wee's Big Holiday' is a gentle delight, both new and familiar
Joe Manganiello
A quick note: my computer finally gave up the ghost last week, and I’ve spent the past five or so days scrambling to get back up and running. I’ve never gone this long without posting at HitFix, not since we began the site, and it’s a disconcerting feeling to just watch pop culture flow by without having the tools be part of the conversation. It’s amazing how ingrained it is at this point, and even when I’m working as hard as I can, I still always feel like there’s more that I’d like to write and publish than I’m able to actually accomplish. Case in point: I was hoping to publish this review last Friday night after my sons joined me and my girlfriend for an evening built around the Netflix premiere of Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday, directed by John Lee. One...

Catch the First Trailer for Netflix's New 'Pee-wee's Big Holiday' Movie
"Didn't you ever wonder what life is like outside Fairville?" "Nope. You know I don't want to go anywhere, or try anything new!" Netflix has debuted the first trailer for the return of Pee-wee Herman, played by Paul Reubens, titled Pee-wee's Big Holiday. This is the first real Pee-wee movie since Big Top Pee-wee in 1988 and Pee-wee's Big Adventure in 1985, so this has been a long time in the making. In this new movie, Pee-wee decides to leave his home town and go on adventure in search of actor Joe Manganiello (seen in Magic Mike Xxl, What to Expect When You're Expecting), who shows up to get a milkshake at the start. This looks like it should be quite fun, especially if you're a fan of Pee-wee that has been awaiting his return. Here's the first official trailer for John Lee's Pee-wee's Big Holiday, direct from Netflix's YouTube: In Pee-wee's Big Holiday,...

A Great Adventure Is Afoot In First Full Trailer For Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday
Pee-wee Herman, the delightfully chirpy man-child that he is, hatches a plan for a grand adventure in the first full-length trailer for Netflix’s feature, Pee-wee’s Big Holiday.

Having portrayed the character for more than 30 years, Paul Reubens is practically synonymous with the childlike Pee-wee, and today’s snippet only showcases more of that signature, innocent charm. The remainder of the cast will be rounded out by Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike Xxl), Alia Shawkat and Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Stephanie Beatriz.

As the title suggests, Big Holiday will see Reubens’ character finally journey beyond the idyllic borders of Fairville. Buoyed by his newfound confidence – thanks in no part to Manganiello’s devilishly handsome stranger – he sets out on an impromptu road trip, crossing paths with angry bank robbers along the way.

Here’s the official synopsis via Netflix:

The new film stars the beloved fun-loving hero of TV, stage and film,...

Watch: Get Back On The Road In New Trailer For 'Pee-wee's Big Holiday'
It's been 30 years since Paul Reubens' Pee-wee Herman had his first big-screen journey in "Pee-wee's Big Adventure," and now, decades later, he's back with "Pee-wee's Big Holiday." While we're living in an era of nostalgia-driven reboots, they haven't always panned out (see last weekend's "Zoolander 2"), but it seems the filmmakers here are keeping things simple and not trying to stir up the formula too much. “It always seems best when Pee-wee has very little plot — his movies probably have the least plot in the history of cinema," director John Lee told USA Today. "Why not embrace that?" Read More: Judd Apatow Produced 'Pee-Wee's Big Holiday' Headed To Netflix Indeed, the Judd Apatow-produced movie finds Pee-wee traveling across the country to befriend a stranger (Joe Manganiello), and that's about the whole sum of the premise, allowing for the character to have no shortage of detours along the way.
