"Decision to Leave" is now streaming on Hulu, so you've got an easy decision to watch ahead of you. The 2022 South Korean film, directed by Park Chan-Wook, combines romance and mystery. Distributed stateside by Mubi, "Decision to Leave" racked up impressive streaming viewership over there. Its addition to the Hulu library will likely (and should) expand that viewership even more.
In "Decision to Leave," Busan detective Jang Hae-jun (Park Hae-il) is investigating the death of a rock climber, Ki Doo-soo (Yoo Seung-mok). The dead man's wife, Song Seo-rae (Tang Wei), has a motive; she's a Chinese immigrant and Doo-soo, an immigration officer, essentially blackmailed her into marriage. Seo-rae has scars from physical abuse too. But her husband died by tumbling down an enormous rock, so surely it must've been a suicide or an accident, right? Hae-jun keeps looking into Seo-rae,...

After the success of “Hellbound” on Netflix, Yeong Sang-ho, Climax Studio, and Wow Point are back for their latest entry in the science fiction/fantasy genre, this time with a stronger dash of (body) horror. However, although it certainly has strengths, “Parasyte: The Grey” shares many of the earlier show’s weaknesses without offering the same kind of drama and thoughtful commentary – or anything substantial, for that matter.

This time, Yeong and his crew are adapting a Japanese manga, “Parasyte”, written and illustrated by Hitoshi Iwaaki between 1989 and 1994. Parasyte was a highly popular Japanese manga series that ran from 1989 to 1994. As well as being published in Japan, it was printed in the US at the same time, and was eventually turned into an anime series and a duology of movies in the 2010s. In 2024, however, the franchised reached new heights with the South Korean series Parasyte: The Grey, which takes inspiration from — but does not directly adapt — the original manga series. It's from the director of Train to Busan, so you know it's worth a watch.
Instead, Parasyte: The Grey focuses on a new group of characters, led by Jeong Su-in (played by Jeon So-nee), a woman who is attacked by a parasite but not fully taken over by it. Instead, they co-exist. She is similar to the lead character Shinichi Izumi from the original manga series and its adaptations. The other main characters in the new series are ‘the Grey,...

Parasyte: The Grey is a unique live-action anime adaptation on Netflix, with a different set of characters from the manga and a South Korean setting. Shinichi Izumi's cameo at the end of Parasyte: The Grey hints at a potential season 2, connecting the K-drama to the anime and manga. If a second season happens, it could explore other parasite groups, Shinichi's experience, and the relationship between Su-in and Heidi.
I wish Parasyte: The Grey, Netflixs most unique live-action anime show, would get a second season after a massive manga cameo at the end that left me wanting more. There are plenty of live-action anime adaptations on Netflix, with some being much better than others. Netflix has released some disappointing adaptations like Death Note (2017) and Cowboy Bebop, but it has also delivered some great shows like One Piece. Fortunately, Parasyte: The Grey was a great take on the world of Parasyte.

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Parasyte: The Grey
The relationship between Su-in and her parasite in "Parasyte: The Grey" is vastly different from Shinichi and Migi's dynamic. Su-in communicates with her parasite, Heidi, through notes, unlike Shinichi and Migi. Shinichi's cameo in "Parasyte: The Grey" opens the door for a potential season 2 featuring two different types of parasite/host relationships.
Netflix’s Parasyte: The Grey got a lot of things right about the anime, but the live-action spinoff series also ignored the best thing about Shinichi Izumi’s story. In the first moments of the sci-fi horror series Parasyte: The Grey, a spore from who knows where falls from the sky. It bounces gently onto the ground as it lands, looking like a squishy toy you’d get from a gumball machine. Then a tentacle sprouts out, slithers toward the nearest person, jumps right into their brain — and creates a tentacled creature that endangers everyone in sight.
The series from director Yeon Sang-ho follows the aftermath when one too many extraterrestrial larvae flop onto Earth in an attempt to take over humankind. As a powerful team called the Grey work to eradicate the threat by any means necessary, one woman must coexist with the parasite that lives inside her. Based on the Japanese manga Parasyte, the Korean series stars Jeon So-nee, Koo Kyo-hwan, and Lee Jung-hyun.

Parasyte: The Grey is a live-action spinoff set in South Korea featuring original characters. The parasites are discovered quickly in Parasyte: The Grey, leading to the formation of Team Grey. Heidi and Su-in's relationship differs from Shinichi and Migi, and the show explores different themes from the manga/anime.
Parasyte: The Grey is a live-action spinoff of Parasyte, and the live-action series makes some important changes to the anime while telling an original story. The newest Netflix live-action anime show can hardly be compared to series like One Piece or Yu Yu Hakusho because it does not cover the events of the manga. Instead, the Korean drama expands the world of Parasyte and takes the story to a different country. Parasyte: The Grey is the fourth property based on Hitoshi Iwaaki’s manga, joining the Parasyte: The Maxim anime series and the two live-action movies.

The original Parasyte manga by Hitoshi Iwaaki is considered to be a seinen classic. The series about an invasion of strange alien parasites became a hit with readers around the world, and the subsequent anime adaptation also became a major hit, being lauded as one of the best seinen anime in history. And while we saw a two-part live-action movie adaptation of the series, Netflix has – as we know – decided to take the live-action aspect to another level with Parasyte: The Grey, with the series just releasing its first full trailer.
