Idw has announced that they will launch a Rot & Ruin comic book series this September, taking us back to the zombie-filled world of Jonathan Maberry’s Rot & Ruin novels:

Virgin Media Shorts has revealed the winner of this year’s competition.

Nimer Rashed secured the Grand Prize with his film Touch, after being selected by a jury including This is England director Shane Meadows and Spike Island director Mat Whitecross.

Nimer was presented with his prize by Meadows, which includes £30,000 funding towards his next film, at a ceremony at the BFI IMAX in London’s Waterloo hosted by presenter Danny Wallace with afterparty music provided by Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker.

Touch is described as “a poignant reflection on the relationship and love between two people over the course of a life time, told almost entirely through the touch of their hands – from their first connection through to their final farewell.”

For about six years now Virgin Media has been putting their brand behind a collection of filmmakers and their shorts, in an effort to push the world of British filmmaking and the short films that new talent have produced. This year on the Virgin Media Shorts shortlist, sees 13 short films vie for the grand prize of £30,000 in funding for the next film project, plus mentoring and guidance from the BFI.

At an event at the Curzon Soho, Spike Island director Mat Whitecross announced the names of the 13 shortlisted films before an audience of filmmakers got to watch their work on the big screen, 12 of which were voted for by a panel of industry representatives, whilst the 13th was voted for by the public.

The show, created by Jimmy McGovern, will return with four more episodes next year. The first instalment stars former Shameless actress Anne-Marie Duff and Peep Show's Olivia Colman as mothers determined to do the right thing in a fight against crime. Screenterrier reported back in 2009 on the filming of Powder, the adaptation of Kevin Sampson's rock and roll novel about a small time band that makes it big in the music industry and succumbs to all the evils it has to offer. Now the film, packed full of up-and-coming young actors gets an official release day of 26th August 2011. Check out the trailer below.

Made by the team behind Awaydays and filmed on location in Ibiza, London, Liverpool and live at the V Festival, Powder is an unflinching journey into the tortured psyche of a musical genius.

Directed by Mark Elliot, and written by Kevin Sampson, the film stars Liam Boyle (represented by Cam) as Keva, and Alfie Allen (recently seen in Game of Thrones) as Wheezer, the hapless manager of the band The Grams. Waterloo Road returns for its seventh series next week with new staff, new students and plenty of fresh drama and dilemmas ahead for teachers and pupils alike. As most fans know by now, Robson Green has joined the cast as the school's new site manager Rob Scotcher, while his former Northern Lights co-star Mark Benton has taken on the role of Maths teacher Daniel Chalk. Ex-Coronation Street actress Poppy Jhakra is to appear as another new teacher named Eleanor Chaudry, who causes a stir on the first day of term by implementing some strict rules and sending Sambuca Kelly to the cooler. A new term starts at Waterloo Road in the first week of May when the school drama returns for its 7th series.

25 year old Oliver Lee joins the cast as new boy Aiden Scotcher, the son of the new site manager, Rob Scotcher played by Robson Green. He catches the eye of Jess (Linzey Cocker) – but it's her friend Vicki (Rebecca Ryan) who's got his attention.

Oliver, from Manchester, was first known for his role as gay teenager Josh Jones in the television series Hollyoaks: In the City in 2006 and has since had roles in indie feature films Awaydays and Powder, as well as writing and directing his own feature McQueen.

He and his Waterloo Road co-star Linzey Cocker have a baby girl Bow, born in January this year.

London -- Songstress Lily Allen's thespian younger sibling Alfie Allen joins Liam Boyle in the big screen adaptation of Kevin Sampson's rock 'n' roll 'n' drugs novel "Powder."

The movie, which marks the big screen directorial debut for television editor Mark Elliot, also stars newcomers Jefferson Hall, Al Weaver, Jo Woodcock and Vinette Robinson and is produced by David Hughes and exec produced by writer Sampson.

Billed as funny and filled with coke-addled sex and paranoia, the £3.5 million ($5.7 million) budgeted movie tells the story of a band breaking into the big time and the music industry machine behind it.

Due to begin shooting here at the V Festival next week, the movie is scheduled to shoot on location in Liverpool, London and Ibiza before wrapping in Spain in October.

Supporting roles by Ralf Little, Oliver Lee and Stephen Martin Walters will be included in the film as well...

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.

From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.

For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.

I think you get the point that lots of great looking film will be playing. I'll leave a bit of the exploration to you..
