Weekend in Taipei debuts with a middling Rotten Tomatoes score. Directed by George Huang, with a script he co-wrote with Luc Besson, the new action film follows a DEA agent who falls in love with a Taipei-based transporter, though their relationship is cut short due to their involvement in crime and corruption cases, and 15 years later, they reunite during a fateful weekend in Taipei. The cast includes two Fast & Furious franchise stars, Luke Evans and Sung Kang, alongside Gwei Lun-mei, Wyatt Yang, Tuo Tsung-hua, Lu Yi-ching, and Patrick Lee.
Now, following its theatrical release in North America, the new action film has debuted with a middling Rotten Tomatoes score. Weekend in Taipei has debuted with a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes with 12 reviews from critics, which could fluctuate as more come in. With fewer than 50 verified ratings from users, the movie doesn't yet qualify for an audience score.

Some of the best action films take us around the world and use the beauty of international locations to complement the eloquence (or grittiness) or their fight choreography. A new film from director George Huang (Swimming With Sharks) takes us across the world to Taiwan but features some action stars you'll instantly recognize from one of the most successful American action franchises. Famed actors Luke Evans and Sung Kang previously co-starred in multiple Fast & Furious films, but in Weekend in Taipei out this week they're not exactly portraying allies.
Evans plays John, a disgruntled DEA agent who refuses to quit a job that ultimately reconnects him with the long-lost Taiwan-set family he once left behind, while Kang plays Kwang, the villainous career criminal who has since taken John's family under his wing. MovieWeb recently caught up with the cast to learn more about the thrills of tackling their respective roles.

Perhaps the most unexpected thing about Weekend in Taipei is its humor. I went into the film knowing there would be a lot of action, a sprinkling of romance, and a family plot, but the comedy sometimes through dialogue and sometimes situational took me by surprise. Immediately I knew this was a film that wasnt about to take itself so seriously, and I could get on board with that. Directed by George Huang from a screenplay by him and Luc Besson, Weekend in Taipei isnt without its faults, but its charming, well-shot, thrilling, and, above all, entertaining.

George Huang is back in the director's chair after a little over 20 years and is bringing Sung Kang with him in Weekend in Taipei. Huang had first broken out with the 1994 Hollywood satire Swimming with Sharks, which he wrote, directed and was the dialogue editor and sound effects editor, though after helming the romantic comedy Trojan War and sci-fi thriller How To Make a Monster, he would largely put directing on hold. He would, however, continue to work behind the scenes in a variety of capacities, including as a creative consultant on multiple Robert Rodriguez movies.

Luke Evans is a DEA agent whose personal connection to a case becomes all the more complicated in Weekend in Taipei. Having first found success on the stage with a variety of West End productions, Evans quickly rose to stardom on screen with supporting roles in the Clash of the Titans remake and Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, as well as Immortals, The Raven and Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy. More recently, Evans has found further success starring in the live-action Beauty and the Beast remake as Gaston, the Fast and the Furious franchise as Owen Shaw and Nine Perfect Strangers, among other titles.

Rotten Tomatoes' simplified "fresh or rotten" approach to critics' scores and its emphasis on big Hollywood films can result in misleading ratings. The site's controversies and allegations have damaged its reputation and raised doubts about its integrity and the credibility of its critics. While Rotten Tomatoes scores may not matter to avid cinema fans well-versed in the industry's politics, they still hold value for casual moviegoers and can impact the reception and promotion of smaller-budgeted films.
Founded in 1998 by Senh Duong, along with his friends Patrick Lee and Stephen Wang, Rotten Tomatoes was created as a hobby between friends — similarly to the origin of Facebook. However, over time, the site became an industry standard for ratings due to its easy accessibility to a 'fresh or rotten' score that benefited from using approved critics to provide their opinions on movies.

The Rotten Tomatoes website is constantly mentioned when talking about entertainment. It could be stated that the majority of cinema and television fans go to the website to see how their favorite or highly anticipated productions are doing. A great factor about it is that both critics and audience scores are shown, and potential moviegoers can read both. The entertainment industry is constantly reinventing itself, from streaming services hitting the big awards to review sites that changed the game, like Rotten Tomatoes. It's an ever-evolving industry that, if not caught up with the times, can suffer greatly.

David Goyer is a busy fellow. He’s more or less the main man in charge of bringing DC Comics to the big screen; a sort of shadowy, unofficial Kevin Feige, if you will. And with that responsibility comes a hefty workload. Goyer’s had to churn out drafts of Batman vs. Superman, supervise the writing process for Joseph Gordon Levitt’s Sandman adaptation and executive produce Constantine for NBC. Soon he’ll be in charge of sedating Jesse Eisenberg, thus allowing a team of hair and makeup professionals to safely shave off those chestnut-brown curls. That’s a lot for a single Goyer to manage. Especially so when it’s all comic book films; the genre may appeal to the inner pimply-faced nerd who lurks within us all, but a strict diet of superheroes isn’t enough to sustain a full-grown human being. And so Goyer, who’s reportedly been jonesing to helm something non DC-related...

David S. Goyer, perhaps best known for penning The Dark Knight trilogy, will be directing a sci-fi thriller called The Breach for Lionsgate. Based on Patrick Lee’s 2009 novel, the script (penned by Justin Rhodes) will center on a corrupt ex-cop who discovers the wreckage of a plane crash in Alaska. From there, he’s thrust into an adventure that involves secret organizations and alien tech powerful enough to spell the end of the world in the wrong hands.

David S. Goyer has set up his next directorial effort, but it won’t be a DC Comics property and it won’t be at Warner Bros. Heat Vision reports that Goyer will helm an adaptation of the Patrick Lee novel The Breach for Lionsgate, which is an action-thriller that follows a former cop and ex-convict who stumbles across a crashed 747 and a mysterious artifact that will determine the fate of the future. Goyer has been developing this project for some time with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, but it now looks to be moving forward fairly quickly. Goyer originated the take on Superman that resulted in Man of Steel and penned the screenplay for the film, and he’s been seen as the man steering some of WB’s DC Comics adaptations. He wrote the script for the untitled Man of Steel follow-up involving Batman and Superman, but the project...

Nerds, for better or worse, should probably worship at the altar of David Goyer. The guy kickstarted the comic book movie boom and rescued Marvel from financial insolvency by penning the Blade series. Then Warner Bros. recruited him to help re-invent Batman with Christopher Nolan. The WB also kept him on for Man Of Steel, and now Goyer is providing the blueprint for their entire comic-inspired shared universe. It.s that sort of far-reaching influence that makes you forget some of the not-that-interesting credits on his resume. Just start with his TV producing credits for Freakylinks and FlashForward and work your way out from there. Nonetheless, his name was strong enough to start a bidding war for his latest project, and Lionsgate is the victor. Back in 2012, David S. Goyer made headlines when he optioned the rights for Patrick Lee’s doomsday-thriller novel, The Breach.

Goyer’s adaptation of The Breach had had interest from Warner Bros., Fox, Relativity, and Millennium, but it’s believed that it was Lionsgate’s strong enthusiasm to fast-track the project that was the deciding factor.
Initially, there had been a question over whether Goyer would be directing as well as producing, and now it looks like that he will indeed be going behind the camera, keen to return to the director’s chair for his first film since 2009’s The Unborn.

David S. Goyer may be (unofficially) serving as the architect of the budding DC shared cinematic universe, but just because the filmmaker – who cowrote the upcoming Man of Steel 2/Batman vs. Superman movie and has been rumored for some time to work on Justice League whenever (if ever?) it actually happens – has a long history of working in the comic book/superhero genre, that doesn’t mean he’s taking a break from exploring other genres in the foreseeable future.

Over the weekend, I read a great article on Forbes that outlined how Warner Bros is seemingly trying to put a little bit of distance between themselves and the Nolan/Goyer tandem that created their last 4 big DC properties. Now THR is adding fuel to that fire with its report that David Goyer has signed on to direct The Breach for Lionsgate.
Why do these two items seemingly relate to each other? Because with the intense production schedule that the untitled Batman/Superman project and Justice League are heading into these next two years, it says something that Goyer is going to be able to find the time to prep, shoot, and finish off production on a completely separate project for another studio- if he’s going to be as involved as everyone initially thought he was with WB/DC’s upcoming slate. But it's also a bit more interesting than that, throwing in sci-fi elements like dimensional rifts. The basic set-up sees an indestructible ex-cop, going by the none-more-action name of Travis Chase, taking himself out of society to live as Jeremiah Johnson in Alaska. Much as we’d like for director Justin Lin to just keep churning out Fast and Furious films forever and ever, the filmmaker appears to have a hankering for a some slightly different fare. Deadline Hollywood reports that the helmer has signed on to direct the big screen adaptation of author Patrick Lee‘s next novel, an untitled action thriller that will kick off a planned three-book series and that doesn’t even release until next winter. While we don’t know much about the project, the outlet does reveal that the book centers on “an ex-special operative named Sam Dryden. In the character-driven thriller, Dryden runs into a mysterious young girl who is not quite what she seems, and he embarks on a journey to keep her safe from a powerful government agent intent on hunting her down.” This could really mean just about anything, but hey, planned thrills! Warner Bros. has won a bidding war for the rights to an upcoming untitled action thriller novel by Patrick Lee who wrote The Breach. The studio has brought on Justin Lin (Fast Five) to adapt the book for the big screen.
According to Deadline the book is the start of a series that features "an ex-special operative named Sam Dryden. In the character-driven thriller, Dryden runs into a mysterious young girl who is not quite what she seems, and he embarks on a journey to keep her safe from a powerful government agent intent on hunting her down."
I'm actually looking forward to seeing Lin direct a movie that isn't part of the Fast and Furious franchise. There's no word on when he'll get around to making this one. He's still an executive producer on the Highlander reboot, he's developing a movie called Subdivision at Universal, and a film about...

After making nothing but “Fast and Furious” movies for the last five years, Justin Lin may finally get a chance to venture off into new territory. Warner Bros has won a bidding war to acquire the rights to an upcoming novel by "The Breach" author Patrick Lee, with Lin attached to direct. The novel does not appear to have a title at the moment, but apparently it’s part of a three-book deal that the author has with Macmillan Publishers. The novel, which is described as a “character-driven thriller,” follows ex-special operative Sam Dryden as he “runs into a mysterious young girl who is not quite what she seems, and he embarks on a journey to keep her safe from a powerful government agent intent on hunting her down.” While the project doesn’t appear to stray too far from Justin Lin’s wheelhouse, it should still be interesting to...

Much like Stephen King,Michael Crichton and John Grisham before him, author Patrick Lee is starting to find a home in Hollywood. His first book, The Breach, which was first published in 2009, is already getting the film treatment courtesy of screenwriter Justin Rhodes and producers David S. Goyer and Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and now Lee's next novel, which doesn't even have a title yet, has gotten the attention of one of the business' biggest action directors. Justin Lin, best known for directing The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast & Furious, Fast Five and the soon-to-arrive Fast & Furious 6, is now attached to helm an adaptation of Patrick Lee's latest, according to Deadline.
