While the premise of the movie may sound like a Wattpad readers dream come true, director Michael Showalter has created a swoon-worthy, cinematic experience sprinkled with a few refreshing twists to the original book.

Julie Rapaport, head of film production and development at Amazon MGM studios, announced that The Idea of You broke the studio's record for a romantic comedy, hauling in a gargantuan 50 million views in the two weeks since it arrived on Prime Video. The film stars rom-com legend Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, best known for his work in Netflix's Purple Hearts and Prime's Red, White, & Royal Blue which recently received a sequel announcement. As Amazon did not detail exactly what counts as a “view,” it should be noted that streaming viewership numbers self-reported by platforms still come with many caveats. Some brands solely report total minutes or hours watched, while others divide that total by each projects runtime to arrive at an estimated number of views. Streamers almost never disclose the exact number of viewers who watched the entirety of their titles, and as Amazon did not define their metric regarding “The Idea of You,” it is possible that a significant portion of the 50 million reported viewers only watched a short piece of the movie.

Don’t you hate it when Hollywood changes the ending to your favorite book when adapting it into a film? The process is sacrilege to some readers, but it can often lead to films improving upon their source material. The latest bestseller to see its ending changed is “The Idea of You” — and a recent piece by IndieWire’s Erin Strecker endorses the changes screenwriters Michael Showalter and Jennifer Westfeldt made in adapting Robinne Lee’s 2017 novel.

However, it turns out these changes, well regarded as they are by some, did not receive input from Lee herself. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the author said she “was not involved at all in the adaptation.”

Robinne Lee, the author of The Idea of You, regrets initially stating that the story was inspired by Harry Styles.

In a new interview, Lee explains why the fictional British boy band member, Hayes Campbell, was not just inspired by the former One Direction member after many have compared it to writing fan fiction.

“I don’t consider it fan fiction at all,” Lee said in an interview with EW. “Harry was one of multiple people who went into creating Hayes Campbell — he was the only one in a British boy band that was current at the time, I guess, and so that’s what people have latched onto. It’s unfortunate because it’s being used as clickbait, and when I’m writing for Hayes, I’m not picturing Harry Styles.”
