When Zack Snyder Secretly Filmed Green Lantern For Justice League—But Studio Cut It At The Last Minute!
Image
Zack Snyder’s Justice League Almost Had A Surprise Green Lantern Cameo (Photo Credit – Wikipedia/Instagram)

Zack Snyder’s Justice League nearly featured John Stewart’s Green Lantern. The director, denied any new production budget by Warner Bros., quietly filmed the character’s scenes at home. But before the final cut was locked, the studio intervened and ordered Stewart’s removal.

Snyder, who wanted to include the DC Comics icon, especially as the franchise’s first Black superhero, pushed back. He even threatened to walk away. However, fearing fans might not get the film at all, he eventually agreed to cut the character (though not without regret)!

Zack Snyder’s Green Lantern Scene Blocked By Studio

Zack Snyder revealed that he secretly shot a Green Lantern sequence in his backyard for Justice League, even after the studio told him not to. “During production, that was a thing they (the studio) insisted on,...

'The Blacklist' Star, 65, Reveals Why the Show's Controversial Ending Happened the Way It Did
Image
Crime on television can be quite something as it often brings audiences in contact with charismatic and enticing crime bosses. In NBC's crime drama, The Blacklist, we were introduced to one such character in Raymond “Red” Reddington, played by James Spader. The series wove an intricate web of stories that ranged from the actual blacklist itself, the real identity of the Boston crime boss and his relationship with another key character in the series, Megan Boone's Elizabeth Keen. Keen herself would depart in Season 8, with the show deciding to kill her off. The Blacklist was renewed for a tenth and final season on NBC in 2022, and its somewhat ambiguous ending didn't quite land with its audience.

The Blacklist Season 10 would end with Red being killed by a bull after escaping to Spain. Donald Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) would find Red's body and place his hat on the body. Speculations...

Behind the scenes at the Tony Awards: From Darren Criss to Andrew Lloyd Webber, backstage at Broadway’s biggest night
Image
Robot love story Maybe Happy Ending and Black family drama Purpose had great nights at the 78th annual Tony Awards, which took place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday, respectively winning Best Musical and Best Play.

Speaking of the decision to bring the show from its native South Korea to New York City, Maybe Happy Ending producer Hunter Arnold said in the Tonys press room post-win, “The moment I read it, heard it, [director] Michael [Arden] told me about it — it was just this gorgeous jewel box of a heartwarming show. So universal, it’s so hopeful and it’s ironically so incredibly human. So it was a very easy decision to be like, let’s put this thing in Michael’s hands and make it and bring it to life.”

In the musical acting categories, Darren Criss nabbed the Tony for Best Performance by a Leading...

‘Every beat is meticulously crafted’: An oral history of the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony-winning play ‘Purpose’
Image
Note: This story was originally published May 30, 2025 and updated June 8 after Purpose won the Tony Award for Best Play.

In a pivotal scene in Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Purpose, Solomon Jasper, a Civil Rights icon, describes to his son Nazareth his newfound appreciation for beekeeping. Part of the appeal of bees to him is that “they are literally born with a role to play.” Given the reception of critics, audiences, and awards bodies to Purpose, one could argue that the playwright and his ensemble members were born to play these roles as well.

Gold Derby sat down with six of the play's Tony Award nominees — performers Glenn Davis (Junior), Jon Michael Hill (Nazareth), Latanya Richardson Jackson (Claudine), Harry Lennix (Solomon), and Kara Young (Aziza), and playwright Jacobs-Jenkins — to discuss the origins of the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony-winning drama and the act of performing it eight times a week.

Purpose began with an offer Jacobs-Jenkins couldn't refuse.

Tony Awards Predictions 2025: Who Will Win? Who Should Win?
Image
Broadway’s history books might remember the 2024-2025 season as the year Hollywood stars – George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook – sent box office revenue (and ticket prices) soaring to record heights. Or maybe the year of Audra McDonald and Nicole Scherzinger. But I’ll remember this Broadway season as being just so very funny. Oh, Mary!, Eureka Day, Death Becomes Her, even the tender humor of Maybe Happy Ending, all supplied audiences with something in very short supply outside the theater this year: Laughter. That’s the best legacy of the 2024-2025 Broadway season.

With that in mind, and much gratitude, here are my predictions for this Sunday’s 78th Annual Tony Awards.

Best Play

Will win: Oh, Mary!

Should win: Oh, Mary!

Kara Young Makes Tony Award History And Finds ‘Purpose’ In Broadway – The Deadline Q&a
Image
Before she sets foot in Radio City Music Hall this Sunday, actor Kara Young will have already made Tony Award history by becoming the first Black person to receive Tony acting nominations in four consecutive years, and only the second person overall. If she wins this Sunday, she will be the first Black person to win two consecutive Tonys.

And yet, the records don’t do Kara Young justice. The treasure is in each performance, one as different, complex and unfailingly compelling. In Lynn Nottage’s Clyde’s (2022) she played a former criminal who finds redemption as, of all things, a cook in a truck stop diner. The following season in Martyna Majok’s Cost of Living, she played Jess, a broke young woman who becomes a caregiver to a young man with cerebral palsy; and in 2024 she received a Tony Award for her featured role as Lutiebell Gussie Mae...

2025 Tony Awards: Predicting the Likely Winners, from ‘Maybe Happy Ending’ to ‘Purpose’
Image
Sutton Foster, Bernadette Peters, Lea Salonga, Idina Menzel, and (if I may invoke her name) Patti LuPone would have been a monster of an all-star Tony nomination lineup in any other season. But those past winners, each a major force in musical theater history, missed the ballot despite their (almost uniformly) strong showings on Broadway this year.

If it’s uncouth to define a season by who didn’t make the Tony cut, that group of also-rans is a sign of the riches on offer. And if this season was in part distinguished by the arrival of a cavalcade of Hollywood A-listers, the nominations also highlight how many Broadway mainstays have set up residence to deliver excellence year after year: Nominees Jonathan Groff, Danya Taymor, Kara Young, Justin Peck, and Dede Ayite all won Tonys last season.

So if not quite every gem of the season is in the mix this Sunday,...

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ ‘Purpose’ Wins Pulitzer Prize For Drama
Image
Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ play Purpose won the Pulitzer Prize for drama Monday.

The play, which follows a powerful family in Black American politics recovering from scandal, is currently running on Broadway starring Latanya Richardson Jackson, Kara Young, Harry Lennix, Jon Michael Hill, Glenn Davis and Alana Arenas. Phylicia Rashad directs the production, which came to Broadway at a Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre in March 2024.

Oh, Mary! written by Cole Escola, which is also currently running on Broadway and stars Escola, was named as a finalist, as was The Ally, written by Itamar Moses, which premiered Off-Broadway in February 2024. Purpose and Oh, Mary! are both nominated for Tony Awards for best play.

This is the first Pulitzer win for Jacobs-Jenkins, who was previously named a finalist for his 2017 play Everybody. His previous plays have included Appropriate, which won the 2024 Tony Award for best revival of a play and saw Sarah Paulson win a Tony for her role.

Tony Awards Nominations Snubs And Surprises: ‘Othello’, Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal And Kieran Culkin Don’t Make The Cut
Image
Well, big weekly grosses and even bigger stars can’t guarantee a Tony Awards nomination.

Broadway does what Broadway wants, so no Best Play nominations (or anything else) for huge moneymaker Othello, and no Best Play noms for Good Night, and Good Luck, Stranger Things: The First Shadow and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Same for the critical favorite Cult of Love.

While Good Night and Dorian Gray weren’t nominated for Best Play, their big stars — George Clooney and Sarah Snook, respectively — were nominated for their performances, as expected. In fact, Dorian Gray, in which Snook plays all the characters from the Oscar Wilde novel, has the distinction of being the most nominated solo show in Tony history, placing in six categories: Snook’s performance, Kip Williams’ direction, and nods for scenic, lighting, sound and costume design.

2025 Tony Awards predictions: ‘Dead Outlaw,’ ‘Purpose’ are up, ‘Our Town,’ ‘Once Upon a Mattress’ are down in odds
Image
Six new Broadway productions opened in March, inaugurating the spring season and foreshadowing the 12 additional openings to come before Tony Awards nominations are announced. See below for a breakdown of how our official odds have changed since our last predictions update on March 6, as Gold Derby users, editors, and experts have been updating their predictions based on performances and critics reviews.

Up

Purpose: Prior to opening, our users were only predicting a single nomination for this new American family drama for its Tony-winning featured actress Kara Young. Since the glowing critical response to playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' latest effort, it has surged with three additional expected bids for Best Play, featured actress Latanya Richardson Jackson, and director Phylicia Rashad. It certainly hasn’t hit its ceiling yet, either, as its lead actor Jon Michael Hill and featured actor Harry Lennix are both within striking distance in sixth place in their respective categories.

James Gunn’s Rumored Zack Snyder Project Can Heal DC if It’s about the One Superhero WB Keeps Ignoring
Image
Zack Snyder understands the intricacies of storytelling, unlike any other Hollywood director. His ability to reach into the humane depths of established mythological figures and bring out the best and the worst of their nature is what makes for a compelling narrative, devoid of pretentious, predictable, and overdone adaptations.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League featuring Henry Cavill as Superman [Credit: Warner Bros.]

While the DC Extended Universe was a failed endeavor, it still roused enough emotion and rage to push the entire world into rebelling against a Goliath studio. The splattering of ideas and character storylines that Snyder introduced in his grimdark vision without ever getting the chance to build on them was a tragedy in and of itself.

In DC’s second coming, James Gunn and Warner Bros. now have a monumental opportunity on their hands to bring those ideas out of oblivion and finally establish an Elseworld project that...

‘Purpose’ Review: In Broadway Directorial Debut, Phylicia Rashad Deftly Teases Out Caustic Portrait of Black Political Dynasty
Image
At first glance, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ new Broadway play Purpose bears a striking resemblance to Appropriate, his subversive take on the white domestic dramas the theater world loves so much. Events in both works are instigated by a reunion and propelled by family feuds that reopen old wounds. Buried secrets resurface. Characters yell confessions and spew insults from across rooms and tables. The texture of the language is smooth, the observations piercing and the delivery cutting. A Jacobs-Jenkins play wouldn’t be complete without a sense of clever and hilarious frenzy.

But instead of revolving around a white family negotiating their legacy within the annals of American history, Purpose centers a powerful Black political dynasty recovering from scandal. The play, deftly directed by Phylicia Rashad, chronicles a weekend with the Jaspers, a legendary family whose patriarch Solomon (Harry Lennix) was an icon of the Civil Rights Movement. Their house, in a...

The True Story Behind ‘The Blacklist,’ Explained
Image
Although it is now one of Netflix's most popular crime thrillers, The Blacklist's roots trace back to NBC. Created by Jon Bokenkamp, the series, which centers on an unlikely partnership between one of the most sought-after criminals and the FBI, made its debut in September 2013. In a nod to the series' resounding success, The Blacklist was acquired by Netflix at a whopping $2 million per episode in 2014. It was the highest that had been paid for an acquisition at the time.

In a feat that only a handful of shows have been able to achieve, The Blacklist was able to successfully keep viewers engrossed throughout its decade-long run. Much of the show's pull is attributed to one character without whom The Blacklist storyline would not be a reality: Raymond "Red" Reddington (James Spader). Creating The Blacklist's central plot, the 'blacklist' itself comes directly from Red. However, despite Red's vitality in the story,...

Who Really Is Raymond Reddington in ‘The Blacklist’?

Why Did Megan Boone Leave The Blacklist? Her Exit Explained
Image
Megan Boone was last seen as Elizabeth Keen in The Blacklist's season 8 finale, and since she was so prominent, many viewers wondered why she left before the final two chapters of the show. First appearing in The Blacklist's pilot, Boone's Elizabeth Keen was among the series' primary characters. Often referred to as Liz, Keen was portrayed as a talented FBI profiler whose storyline went through many significant changes as she started unraveling the mysteries of her past and its connections with criminal mastermind Raymond "Red" Reddington.

As one of The Blacklist's main characters, Elizabeth plays a significant role in driving many primary storylines of the long-running series. Considering Elizabeth was the main character of The Blacklist throughout the first eight seasons, it is not surprising that audiences may be curious about why Boone departed from the series after sticking with it for so long. However, the...

Well, not just once but Snyder may have broken the rules of DC Comics and Warner Bros. Pictures twice throughout his brief time in the Dceu. These rule breaks, however, were nothing short of ordinary.

Zack Snyder refused to finish the movie

Not like a cliffhanger ending where nothing gets resolved but the 300 director refused to direct a film that had a satisfying end. This seemed to be the case for one of the most controversial films released: Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Zack Snyder Chose Martian Manhunter for Zsjl Because WB Ordered Him Not To Touch Another Superhero: “So I made a deal with them”

Zack Snyder has always been a visionary when it comes to expansive storytelling. His hold over comic book lore and the cinematic medium combined to give the audience and the studios an unprecedented experience that almost launched a rebellion across the globe for the sake of one film.

The five-part Justice League story that he had cooked up for the fans of the grimdark universe was to remain in the shadows, forever festering like an old untreated wound. However, Snyder has managed to outlive and outgrow the controversy and scandal wrought on by the DC Extended Universe.

In the aftermath, the director found himself accepting the possibility that he would never again visit the DC universe. As such, it was an easy decision to spoil the rest of his Justice League story, which was set to complete his five-part Dceu trilogy.

Theater Review: ‘Inherit the Wind’ Speaks to Today at the Goodman Theatre
Chicago – There is no better time to take in a stage play that is based in U.S. history, depicting the battle between fact and religion. The old theater chestnut – first mounted in 1955 – is “Inherit the Wind,” now at the Goodman Theatre, completing it’s short run through October 20th. For tickets and more information, click Inherit.

Play Rating: 4.0/5.0

“Inherit the Wind” is a fictionalized account of the infamous Scopes trial of the 1920s, which pitted the theory of teaching evolution against the Bible stories of creation. In the book of the play, the teacher on trial is Bertram Cates (Christopher Lleywyn Ramirez), a put-upon educator in the southern small town of Hillsboro, who is in love with Rachel (Tyler Meredith), the preacher’s daughter. Defending Bertram is Henry Drummond, while the prosecutor is Matthew Harrison Brady. As the showdown looms, Hillsboro becomes a trial-of-the-century circus, and a lighting rod...

Is Superman Director And DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn Teasing Martian Manhunter's Dcu Debut?
Image
Based on what little we've seen from Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker season 2, James Gunn is wasting no time in expanding the Dcu and creating a world inhabited by superheroes.

A DC fan recently took to social media to share some deep-cut Easter Eggs they hope to see in the Dcu; one of them was Martian Manhunter's obsession with Chocos, DC's take on Oreos.

That prompted Gunn to respond with a real-life version of Chocos, leading to speculation on social media that J'onn J'onzz will soon make his Dcu debut. However, as the filmmaker is currently busy shooting an episode of Peacemaker, we'd bet on these being a prop from that series.

In other words, it might be best not to get too excited. However, that Max series does feel like a fitting place to introduce Martian Manhunter as Detective John Jones! It's worth noting that Chocos were also spotted...
