The slasher and the actioner seem like two disparate types of movies, however, both often feature a high degree of suspense, lengthy chases, and a lot of death. A slasher villain will hunt down hapless victims, whereas an action hero may go after one enemy or a whole group of them. Grisly kills and an assortment of weapons are also to be expected.

Now, there are some action movies that infuse more slasher elements than others. Classics like The Terminator and Predator are unmistakably modeled after slashers, but they’re not the only ones. Others take on the traits of slashers more than their peers, ultimately creating a more unique viewing experience.

The following ten lesser seen movies give action and slasher fans the best of both worlds.

There's no singular definition of a martial arts movie. They can be deadly serious, endlessly silly, and sometimes even feature anthropomorphic turtles named after classic Italian artists. The common thread is the presence of fights that go beyond boxing or brawls in their style and form. Action cinema is filled with talents who've made a career showcasing those skills such as Bruce Lee, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Jackie Chan, and many more. You know them, you've seen them, and you love them, but for every well-known and celebrated film of theirs, there are four dozen more movies featuring equally great (or better) talents that don't get the same kind of love.

This brings us to this list of martial arts movies that only die-hard fans have probably seen. The number one reason why is straight-up unavailability. A precious few are "rediscovered" with new home video releases, but thousands more remain lost...

If you were a kid in the 1980s and you liked action movies, chances are you rented No Retreat No Surrender at some point. It was like a more violent, high-octane take on The Karate Kid, with all-American teen Jason (Kurt McKinney) getting martial arts tutelage from no less than The Ghost Of Bruce Lee so he could kick the ass of a muscly Russian (Jean-Claude Van Damme in his first major role). As a kid, this movie was everything to me. It was a 15 cert so a little bit edgy, but still simple and wholesome enough for young me to totally ‘get it’. I had tears streaming down my face the first time I watched it, I was so invested in the final fight.

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.

I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.

I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.

Berlin — Martial arts epic "The Grandmaster" kicked off the Berlin Film Festival on Thursday, introducing an international audience to Yip Man, the man who mentored Bruce Lee and brought kung fu to the masses.

The movie by Wong Kar-wai is running out of competition because the director also heads this year's jury.

Shanghai-born Wong and his fellow jurors – among them American actor-director Tim Robbins – will have to choose from 19 movies competing for prizes at the 63rd Berlinale.

These include the Steven Soderbergh thriller "Side Effects" with Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Gus Van Sant's film "Promised Land" about the shale gas industry starring Matt Damon.

Juliette Binoche portrays a troubled French sculptor in "Camille Claudel 1915," while "Gold" tells a tale of German immigrants seeking their luck in late 19th-century North America.

Director Herman Yau reunites with The Untold Story actor Anthony Wong in Ip Man: The Final Fight. The semi-biopic is the follow-up to Yau's The Legend Is Born: Ip Man, and while the first film focused on his early life, the new picture tells the story of his last battle during his elderly years, in the period leading up to his death. Years after it was first announced nobody really seems to know if Wong Kar Wai's The Grandmasters is any closer to actually releasing now than it was a year ago. A notorious perfectionist prone to lengthy diversions and experiments, it does not appear that Wkw has changed his methods one iota for his long-in-the-works biopic of Bruce Lee's mentor Yip Man. We all know and love the Donnie Yen starring Ip Man films, but Wong Kar Wai is gearing up for his own take on the Ip Man legend, starring Tony Leung. Now for some, Wong Kar Wai is a required taste as a film-maker, but the action is choreographed by Yuen Wo Ping.

Exclusive: The Weinstein Company has closed a deal for United Kingdom and Australian distribution rights to The Grandmasters, the Wong Kar-wai-directed Chinese language martial arts film. Harvey Weinstein is among a small group vying for domestic rights, with Fox Searchlight and Sony Pictures Classics also in the mix. TWC's investment was north of $1 million for the offshore rights. Buyers were shown about 15 minutes of expertly choreographed martial arts footage, and also were given a 5-page synopsis of the film. Distributors are going on faith that the director's vision holds together in a cohesive story. The Rite ~ is there any legendary name actor more in need of a career makeover than Sir Anthony Hopkins these days? Another character who the marketing department can pretend is Hannibal Lecter for the ads. That was 20 Years Ago! Move on. This one is about demonic possession because that horror trope never gets old. True story: during the trailer I was like "cat alert!" as I love my cats in the movie but then the trailer implies that cats are of the devil so I can't be having this movie.

The Mechanic - In which Jason Statham is too cool to look at explosions (twice in the trailer alone!) and Ben Foster tags along for the assassin-laced ride.

A teaser to Wong Kar Wai's next film "The Grandmasters" has been made available for viewing pleasure. It, however, does not offer a look at the footage from the film but features some letters which come in and out on black background.

Some posters from the film were unveiled at Los Angeles' American Film Market last November and can be seen here. Additionally, there is a picture which gives a look at Zhang Ziyi in her character's costume.

Little is known about the story but it is a story of martial-arts master Ip Man, played by Tony Leung. The existing plotline says, "In martial arts there is no right or wrong, only the last man standing." The action drama, that will mark Wong Kar Wai's first kung fu movie, is expected to come out sometime in 2011.

It doesn't show much. And by much, I mean anything. And it does say much, at least not in a language I speak. If nothing else, this trailer proves how little it takes to get people excited about a kung fu film by Wong Kar-wai starring Tony Leung:

As something of a Wong Kar-wai obsessive I have been following any news surrounding his latest, a biopic of sorts of Yip Man, very closely but beyond the few morsels of information that have leaked out there has been little that could be deemed too newsworthy. Thanks mostly due to the American Film Market in Los Angeles though there has been a mini explosion of news this week.

The American Film Market is almost underway and and we've got our first look at what's sure to be a lot of promotional material for upcoming flicks as Movielicious snagged shots of a couple posters and a still from Wong Kar Wai's upcoming Ip Man film, The Grandmasters. It's not much, but it's pretty damn exciting anyway! The film stars Tony Leung as Ip Man, Zhang Ziyi, Song Hye-kyo, Chang Chen, Zhao Benshan, Julian Cheun Chi-lam and Mma fighter Cung Le. It also features martial arts choreography by the legendary Yuen Woo-Ping. Production is currently under way and will likely be completed sometime early next year, although you can never be too sure with Wong Kar Wai.

Though it does not appear to have been announced by the production company itself, a series of Tweets and comments from former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Mma fighter Cung Le appear to confirm that the fighter-turned-actor - he has recently appeared in Tekken and Bodyguards And Assassins and has several projects lined up for the near future - is currently in Hong Kong working on Wong Kar Wai's The Grand Master.

According to the fighter he will be working in Hong Kong until early November and then will return to complete his scenes shortly after Christmas. Wong Kar Wai's biopic of martial arts master Ip Man stars Tony Leung and features fight choreographer by Yuen Woo Ping.

In other news, Cung Le has an action figure.

In the grand scheme of competing Ip Man bio-pics there was actually a brief period of time when it appeared that Wong Kar Wai's The Grand Master might actually be released before Wilson Yip's Ip Man. There were even preliminary lawsuits between the two projects over proposed titles. But, you know, Wong Kar Wai is Wong Kar Wai which means it could quite possibly be years still before we see his Tony Leung starring version of the story and in the time it's taken for his project to get off the ground there have been two Wilson Yip pictures plus a prequel project from the same producers.

But it does appear to be coming. At least, someone thinks it's close enough to make a poster to try and sell it. And there it is to the left.

Coming to the UK on DVD and Blu-Ray on May the 31st, Teddy Chen’s Bodyguards and Assassins stars Donnie Yen, Tony Leung Ka Fai and Simon Yam.

The film has been out in other regions for a while and I recently checked it out. Although I enjoyed the film it is a little disjointed and poorly paced. There was some enjoyable action as you can see from the trailer but the film is a little lacking emotionally and the plot is a little underdeveloped. That said the film is worth watching as it is still enjoyable and features some excellent performances.

With the recent releases of Ip Man and True Legend and the forthcoming Ip Man 2, Reign of Assassins and Ong Bak 3, there are some great martial arts films to see at the moment.

2008’s “Ip Man” is one of the best martial arts movies you’ll see in the last 10 years, a film that all but cemented Donnie Yen’s crown as the new kung fu king of Hong Kong cinema. 2010’s “Ip Man 2” is a get rich quick scheme, and that’s me being very generous. The film’s one big success story is that it actually allows star Donnie Yen to expand on his acting chops. Somewhat. I’m not saying Yen has become Tony Leung or Chow Yun Fat overnight, but he seems to have understood that his character has aged since the first movie, and it shows here. Then again, who the hell watches a Donnie Yen movie for acting? Sai Om Film Pvt. Ltd. Production presents, the most critically acclaimed film of this season, Lahore is all set to make mark and open to the audiences, globally on 19th March, 2010. Warner Bros. Ha... Last time we dealt with Miss Song, quite the peculiar shitstorm ensued: we snarkily mentioned a Chinese news report claiming that Song Hye-Gyo and Wentworth Miller would join Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa's 急先锋 (Vanguard), then some Korean "journalists" passed our piece through the good ole Babelfish, which likely made them believe we had some kind of scoop and it was all signed and ready to go (of course, it wasn't the case). Song's management was clearly ticked off by the news, claiming they hadn't heard a thing about the project, making it the umpteenth case of Chinese media playing wishful thinking. But this time we can safely say it's not the case, as Wong Kar-Wai has just cast Song Hye-Gyo for his upcoming Yip Man biopic 一代宗师 (The Great Master).

Bit of the good ole Chinese-style publicity stunt today on Chinese news portals, with more casting news concerning Wong Kar-Wai's upcoming Yip Man biopic 一代宗师 (The Great Master). It's not the news most everyone was waiting for - a confirmation on the Brigitte Lin issue, or lack thereof - but I guess it's good enough: the new name which is emerging is Gong Li, who would join forces with Wong for the first time since Eros. Local media reports indicated yesterday that Gong would play the head matron of a martial arts clan, but her management played coy, saying that they haven't received any offer, although - and here's the key - they're on good terms with Wong Kar-Wai, so they'd certainly be open to the idea of participating in the film. They say any final announcement will come from Wong's side, so it's probably a matter of time before ink is spilled.

Maggie Cheung alert!

She walked the Taiwanese red carpet today in this white number to your left. She was presenting Best Picture at the Golden Horse Awards. The Golden Horse is Taiwanese in origin but it's for Chinese language films regardless of country of origin so it's very competitive now. Warlords and Lust, Caution, which both had international releases, were recent winners of Best Picture.

This year, Maggie handed the trophy to No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti which, if we ever see it in the States, might be called I Can't Live Without You or Not Without You. That's Taiwan's submission for this year's Foreign Language Film Oscar race. The film is from actor/director Leon Dai and it's about a poor man who loses his daughter once the government learns of their illegal living conditions.

You know the word deadline and Wong Kar-Wai weren't meant to be put in the same sentence, but it's good to know that the wheels are finally in motion. As it's been widely announced before, we're dealing with another story about the legendary Wing Chun pioneer played by Donnie Yen in 葉問 (Ip Man), but with Wong at the helm you know things will be a little different.

一代宗师 (The Great Master) brings back Wong regular Tony Leung, who will be paired with Zhang Ziyi and veteran Zhao Benshan (who recently suffered a cerebral aneurysm, but is seemingly fine now). Reports are circulating that Wong and his stars Leung, Zhang and Zhang Zhen were in Kaiping (Guangdong Province) for the usual pre-shoot ceremony, and that the film will shoot there from December 12 to April 18. Ouch. In the midst of a rather painful-sounding 'full strength' fight rehearsal on Monday, Tony Leung took a kick from his instructor that actually broke his arm. They were working in preparation for Wong Kar-Wai's upcoming biography of Ip Man, the renowned martial artist who famously trained the teenage Bruce Lee. While we don't know if this injury will yet delay the September start date for the production, we do know that Leung is continuing training his kicks, and just leaving his arm out of use. We already have Ip Man, Wilson Yip's very good biopic of a year or so ago that starred Donnie Yen in the title role, so if it were a director less inspiring and exciting than Wong Kar Wai I wouldn't be looking forward to this new retread one half as much. This week's Asian Cinema Scene travels to Hong Kong and Los Angeles, showcasing recent and upcoming films.

Hong Kong Film Awards. Wilson Yip's galvanizing martial arts biopic Ip Man won the Best Film award at the annual ceremony held on Sunday, according to China Daily. Donnie Yen stars as a respected Wing Chun master who ultimately is forced to use his martial arts skills to defend his country's honor against the invading Japanese in the late 1930s. Sammo Hung and Tony Leung Siu-Hung deservedly won the Best Action Design award for their work on the film. (My capsule review and the trailer.)

The other big winner doesn't feature any martial arts or big battle scenes. Low-budget drama The Way We Are won for Best Director (Ann Hui), Best Actress (Bau Hei-Jing), Supporting Actress (Chan Lai-Wun), and Best Screenplay (Lui Yau-Wah). Voltage Pictures has acquired foreign rights to Stallion Media's horror pic HybridHybrid," directed by Eric Valette (One Missed Call). Oded Fehr (Resident Evil: Apocalypse/Extinction, The Mummy) and Shannon Beckner topline the pic about a female mechanic in a Chicago police garage who spends a night of terror with a hybrid car. Stallion Media partners Oliver Hengst and Elizabeth Wang-Lee are producing with Kevin DeWalt of Minds Eye Entertainment and Tim Kwok of Convergence Entertainment. Alex Leung (Studio 407), Tim McGrath (Picture Park) and Christian Arnold-Beutel (Tadora) will exec produce. The pic's budgeted at more than $10 million. Shooting will begin this week around Regina, Saskatchewan. "Hybrid" is written by Neal Marshall Stevens ("Thirteen Ghosts").
