Golden Girls: Why Coco the Butler Was Dropped After the Pilot
Image
While The Golden Girls is mainly known for Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia, the pilot originally included another main character, the butler Coco. Despite being a beloved character and providing needed Lgbtqia representation, the network ultimately chose to focus on the main cast that fans now know and love. The decision to cut Coco was a difficult decision, but it ultimately was the best for the show.

The Golden Girls is still known today as one of the most progressive sitcoms ever made. The adventures of Dorothy (Bea Arthur), Blanche (Rue McClanahan), Rose (universally beloved Betty White) and Sophia (Estelle Getty) -- four older women who lived in a Miami home together -- took audiences by storm and provided representation to a group generally overlooked by television of the time. Before it was just "the Golden Girls," however, there was a Golden Boy who lived with them.

Then, throw in a bit of martial arts in the style of John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China and add some Asian mysticism that reminds viewers of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Make sure your lead character displays an anti-authority attitude and even include a humorous scene where he pretends to be a...

Gay fave Bea Arthur of "Golden Girls" dies at age 86
In very sad news, Golden Girls and Maude star Bea Arthur died today at age 86. The TV and Broadway star reportedly died after suffering from cancer. Her family was at her bedside and say she passed peacefully.

Arthur is the second of the four Golden Girls to die. Estelle Getty, who played Sophia, died last year at age 84. Rue McClanahan and Betty White are the two surviving Golden Girls.

Both the Golden Girls and the stars themselves were wildly popular among certain gay men. Indeed, there is an entire book devoted to the show just for gay men called The Q Guide to The Golden Girls. The show's pilot actually included a gay character, a housekeeper named Coco played by Charles Levin, but the character was dropped after the pilot.

My own mother, who passed away last year, was a huge fan of The Golden Girls and I remember spending...
