Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, ‘The Iron Sheik’ of Wrestling Fame, Dies at 81
Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, aka the villainous “Iron Sheik” of old-school World Wrestling Federation fame and its only Iranian champion, has died, according to his official Twitter account. He was 81.

Known for years as “The Sheik” or just “Sheik,” Vaziri later became infamous for his blunt, often vulgar, always all-caps tweets telling various random entities to go f— themselves.

He was still doing just that on Wednesday afternoon:

Fuck The Wildfires

— The Iron Sheik (@the_ironsheik) June 7, 2023

It was an extension of his “heel” wrestling persona, a longtime pillar of the original World Wrestling Federation lineup that included bitter rivals like Hulk Hogan and Randy “Macho Man” Savage. The garrulous nature was all an act, of course – privately Sheik was known as a devoted family man, hardworking entertainer and good friend.

As a wrestler, Sheik played up his Iranian upbringing, developing the “Camel Clutch” move and once teaming with Russian...

Leading Hollywood Screenwriter Workspace theOffice Reopens In Santa Monica
The unofficial “screenwriters den” for film and TV screenwriters known as theOffice has reopened its doors in Santa Monica after relocating from its original home in Brentwood.

Not to be confused with the NBC comedy by the same name (although it would be cool if it had the same set up), theOffice is a communal workspace for writers who are working on the next big film screenplay or TV series — and they have a roster of alumni to back it up which include J.J. Abrams, Chris Weitz, as well as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Clark Gregg who wrote What Lies Beneath and Choke. Other alums include Stepmom writer Gigi Levangie, Finding Dory‘s Victoria Strouse, All the Money in the World‘s David Scarpa, and Noah Oppenheim, screenwriter of Jackie and The Maze Runner.

The Starter Wife (2007)
I'm Still Not Over... Stephen Moyer as my island dream man on 'The Starter Wife'
The Starter Wife (2007)
Five years ago, I started watching The Starter Wife for Debra Messing, but I stayed for Stephen Moyer. Only, I didn’t realize it was Stephen Moyer until years later.

Let me back up: The Starter Wife was a USA miniseries about a recently divorced single mother who was trying to develop her skills as a writer. It was based on the novel of the same name by Gigi Levangie Grazer, but all I really remember about it is that Debra Messing played the lead character, Molly Kagan, who lived in a gorgeous oceanfront house with her daughter. And after divorcing her very rich husband,...

Photos: Check Out Brian Grazer's New Santa Monica Pad
Brian Grazer
We knew, even before the Wall Street Journal reminded us with this very cool graphic, that super-producer Brian Grazer is a man who likes order in his life. (Ok, the not-so-kind might call him a man obsessed with order.) Whatever. He certainly disrupted the natural order of the real estate universe -- which is to sell your old house before you buy a new one.

The very rich, of course, do things in whatever order they want. So here's the scenario involving Grazer: He plopped down $12.5 million on a 12-year-old house in Santa Monica in early December and then withdrew his 6,000-square-foot Malibu Colony house from the market on Dec. 28. When last listed, the Malibu place was for sale at $19.5 million.

Sometimes celebrities withdraw their homes from the active listings when they have a signed contract and expect to close escrow. Maybe that happened here, maybe not. The Colony house...

Best. Gay. Week. Ever! Princess Boy to the Rescue!
Well, It Was That Kind Of Best.Gay.Week.Ever!

I have to confess that when I sat down to write last week's Bgwe! column, it was a little hard to focus on the "Best" part of the equation. What with all of the news about gay teen suicides along with the usual doses of homophobia and asshattery, it was hard to be in a good mood. But I managed to avoid being unduly negative and focused on the good stuff.

But at least it seemed like there were some actual positive changes coming out of the terrible tragedies of Tyler Clementi and the other gay teens we've lost recently. Unfortunately, we then we learned about the horrific beating and torture of three gay men in New York. And that was followed by this horrible video (actually filmed four years ago) of the New York Yankee fans known as the...

Burbank Resident Competes on Logo's The Arrangement
Watch Gay Video & Lesbian Movies

Just when you thought there was a reality competition show for every occupation (singers, fashion designers, chefs, hairstylists, interior designers, construction workers, to name a few) Logo has created The Arrangement. The series pits ten floral designers against each other. And one of the competitors is from beautiful downtown Burbank.

Tenley Young, a UCLA graduate, hit hard times last year and moved back in with her folks after losing her job. Shortly afterwards she learned of The Arrangement and auditioned.

Now she is one of ten florists fighting for the top prize of $25,000 in competitions like creating floral hats to match a Nick Verreos dress and decorating a display mannequin with living materials (think Tournament of Roses Parade).

The producers of RuPaul's Drag Race have created the eight-episode show with head judge Eric Buterbaugh, floral designer to the stars. His client list—which includes Jennifer Aniston,...

Review: "The Arrangement" Tries Hard to Make Arranging Flowers Exciting (and Mostly Succeeds)
If you'd told me five years ago that a show about cooking could be exciting, I wouldn't have believed you — but, of course, that was before I became aware of Top Chef. And despite all the jokes about watching paint dry, Work of Art was one of the most interesting of the new competitive reality shows.

But flower arranging? Is there really a way to make that exciting?

Logo (which owns AfterElton.com) hopes so, given that their latest offering, airing tonight at 11 Pm (following the much-hyped The A-List), is a reality show about a group of, well, not florists, natch, but floral designers.

Why is The Arrangement running on the "gay" network? Truthfully, I'm not sure. Yes, it's a huge stereotype that a lot of florists are gay, and a number of the contestants here probably are too. But sexuality has almost nothing to do with the premiere episode,...

You can always count on RuPaul to speak the truth. And, natch, for being funny as hell while doing it. It's one of the queen's best attributes. On last night’s episode of Drag Race, the host couldn’t have been more spot on with her searing bon mot to eternally funny queen Pandora Boxx, as she awaited her fate after the rocker chick-inspired challenge: “Pandora Box,” RuPaul said, in her hilarious, deeply dramatic fashion, “you are the Susan Lucci of this competition.” And RuPaul is right — the poor, poor Pandora Boxx, a favorite contestant of mine who pulled off...

USA eyes series based on 'Freshman' pic
After building a formidable series slate based on original ideas, USA Network is eyeing a show based on comedy feature "The Freshman," its first major series development based on an existing property in eight years.

Andrew Bergman, who wrote and directed the 1990 movie starring Matthew Broderick and Marlon Brando, is on board to pen the series adaptation from Sony TV, which has three more projects set up at USA.

The film centered on a wide-eyed Nyu freshman (Broderick) who unwittingly becomes an errand boy for a Mafia boss (Brando).

USA's "The Dead Zone," was based on Stephen King's novel, but the network has stuck to original premises since establishing its brand as a home to lighter shows built around quirky characters with the 2002 dramedy "Monk." (It adapted Gigi Levangie Grazer's book "The Starter Wife" as a miniseries, which later spawned a short-lived series.)

The lead character in "Freshman...

The announcements were accompanied by other news items, including a renewal of "In Plain Sight," USA's summer series, for a second season. Sarah Jessica Parker
Sarah Jessica Parker lines up 'Ivy'
Sarah Jessica Parker
Sarah Jessica Parker could soon have her first project after "Sex".

The actress is in talks with Warner Bros. to star in "The Ivy Chronicles", a story of class and the single woman in contemporary New York. It centers on Ivy Ames, an Upper East Side woman who, after losing her high-powered job and getting divorced, starts over again in a less ritzy downtown apartment. After pulling her children from private school, Ames starts a business to help upper-middle-class women get their children into elite kindergartens.

The project, based on Karen Quinn's eponymous novel, is described as following in the vein of "The Devil Wears Prada" and "The Nanny Diaries" as well as Gigi Levangie Grazer's "The Starter Wife", which became a successful limited series on USA. Jerry Weintraub is set to produce.

Warners is keen to cast Parker in another project after "Sex and the City" became one of the blowout hits of the summer, earning more than $300 million worldwide. Several projects were presented to the actress, who sparked to the single-mother tale.
