For better or worse, Nick Cassavetes' 2004 film "The Notebook" still resonates with audiences. It's been more than 20 years since this Nicholas Sparks adaptation first hit theaters, and many people have since come to regard it as one of the all-time great romance movies. It's a tad surprising, too; the film earned lukewarm reviews and was a respectable-if-modest box office success upon its initial release, receiving much in the way of criticism for its melodramatic extremes and tendency to stew in genre clichés.
20 years later, these criticisms still hold water, as "The Notebook" feels like a clumsy foray into saccharine sentimentality and lacks the innate sincerity that more compelling love stories embrace. Before you ready your pitchforks, however, I must admit that Cassavetes' film knows how to win you over even when you're aware of its flaws, thanks to the spectacular lead performances that make it worthwhile. Both Rachel McAdams and...

It is a pretty common notion that books are better than films. This is usually true because a film has constraints on length and time, while a book doesn’t have these issues and can flesh out a story properly. However, there have been instances where a film adaptation of a novel turned out to be way better than the book.
Some of these films went on to win accolades, like the Academy Awards, while others became cult classics. From The Godfather to Misery, these are our favorite picks for the movies that are way better than the book they were based on.
10. The Godfather (1972) Based on: The Godfather by Mario Puzo (1969)

Before Shawn Levy directed Hugh Jackman in 2024’s Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, the pair teamed up for a 2011 sci-fi sports movie. That film, Real Steel, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2012, will head to free streaming service Tubi starting March 1.
Levy directed and produced the movie, which was written by Dan Gilroy (Andor)and Jeremy Leven. The DreamWorks film is based on a short story called “Steel” by Richard Matheson that was first published in a 1956 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. The story was also adapted into a Twilight Zone episode in 1963.
Real Steel features Jackman in the role of a former boxer named Charlie Kenton, who, when boxing is taken over by robot opponents, builds and trains a robot with the help of his son. Evangeline Lilly and Anthony Mackie, also both vets of the MCU in the...

Romance is one of the most prolific genres, in literature, adaptations, music, and original stories. However, there's something undeniably timeless about Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams' 21-year-old drama, The Notebook.
The movie came out in 2004, a year that was great for Rachel McAdams, as she premiered the Nicholas Sparks adaptation, alongside Gosling, and also the iconic Mean Girls. The movie tells the story of Noah and Allie's romance over the years, including their beginning as teenagers, choosing each other years later, growing old together, and dealing with a heartbreaking disease. Just in time for Valentine's Day, The Notebook will be available to stream on Hulu starting Feb. 1.

Few romantic pictures in the modern age of Hollywood have impacted moviegoers all across the world quite like the beloved 2004 juggernaut The Notebook, which famously starred Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as a star-crossed couple in the 1940s whose love story transcended time and defied the odds. Based on the popular Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name, the captivating classic told the tale of how lumber mill worker Noah Calhoun and heiress Allie Hamilton met and fell head-over-heels in love with one another in the summer of 1940 in South Carolina.
When their vastly different backgrounds threaten their life-altering love affair, Noah and Allie fight to preserve their profound connection and are faced with unfathomable obstacles like war, disapproving parents, and rival romantic suitors.

When the big-budget sci-fi/boxing flick hybrid "Real Steel" brawled its way into theaters on October 7, 2011, it was ridiculed by some as "Rock'em Sock'em Robots: The Motion Picture." On one hand, the $110 million-budgeted film's blockbuster pedigree of star Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy did little to suggest the film was anything more than this. But anyone who grew up gorging on Rod Serling's original run of "The Twilight Zone" in syndication or reading the novels and short stories of Richard Matheson knew there was more to "Real Steel," at least in theory, than family friendly mechanical mayhem.
Obviously, with that budget, Disney (which distributed the DreamWorks production) wasn't going to sell the film primarily on its connection to a nearly 50-year-old black-and-white television show. As for Matheson, while he's considered a god of 20th century sci-fi/fantasy/horror literature by publishing heavyweights like Stephen King and Neil Gaiman,...

Chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in The Notebook led to real-life romance, despite initial on-set tension. The director regrets revealing the actors did not get along, but the film's success showcases Gosling and McAdams' talent. Despite initial critical response, The Notebook remains a romantic classic with new audiences, leading to a successful Broadway musical.
Even twenty years after its initial release, The Notebook is widely considered one of the best romantic dramas ever made. Much of the love for the film comes down to the palpable chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, who shine as Noah Calhoun and Allison "Allie" Calhoun. With such rich chemistry being displayed on screen, the audience would think that the pair hit it off when the cameras weren't rolling, but director Nick Cassavetes let it slip ten years ago that the performers did not get along while filming the movie, something he now deeply regrets.

The Notebook movie changes the narrative structure of the book, starting Duke's story off with Noah and Allie as teenagers rather than as adults like in the book. The movie shows a lot more of Noah and Allie's early relationship during their first summer together, which is only summarized in the book. At the end of the movie, Noah and Allie die in each other's arms, which is not how the book ends.
The 2004 romance drama The Notebook brought Nicholas Sparks' 1996 novel of the same name to the big screen, but the film adaptation made some key changes to the book. What is it about the game of golf that makes good cinema? We can barely keep our eyes open during the PGA Tour. Its tranquil vibes are more relaxing than a glass of warm milk. And we can't name but a handful of players: Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, er... Is there a famous "Dave" in there? Still, we could pop in and enjoy at least a dozen films about the sport at a moment's notice on a lazy Saturday afternoon. There's something majestic about the luscious greens, the stillness of the crowd, the whispered play-by-play, and the distant thwack of a ball that translates to the big screen.
Or maybe it's the class struggle, as golf is seen as a gentleman's sport designed for the wealthy. A round of golf at Pebble Beach will set you back nearly 600! Or perhaps we're intoxicated by the psychology of the game,...

Real Steel 2 is still a possibility. This October will mark the tenth anniversary of Real Steel, the boxing robot drama starring Hugh Jackman and directed by Shawn Levy. Though reviews were mixed, the movie was a hit at the box office, albeit perhaps not as much as Disney had been hoping for. Possibly due to falling short of expectations, a sequel was never made and the world had seemingly moved on.
Almost a decade later, Real Steel found a new audience when it was released on Netflix during the pandemic last year. Maybe the movie was just a bit ahead of its time, as it seems to be just as popular as ever following its streaming release. When Real Steel made the Top 10 most-watched titles on Netflix, Levy realized that there may be some more potential there. In a new interview with Inverse, Levy reveals he's since talked to...

The Notebook essentially launched Ryan Gosling's career as an A-lister in Hollywood, but the iconic romance movie could have starred George Clooney. In his upcoming movie The Midnight Sky, 59-year-old Clooney will be playing an older version of a character played by 34-year-old Ethan Peck. Speaking about the movie with Entertainment Weekly, Clooney was reminded of the time he was set to star in The Notebook in the role that later went to Gosling.

Another 25 unsung greats come under the spotlight, as we provide our pick of the underappreciated films of 1995...
The year covered in this week's underrated movie rundown was significant for a number of reasons. It was the year that saw the release of Toy Story - the groundbreaking movie that would cement Pixar's reputation as an animation studio, and set the tempo for CG family movies for the next 18 years and counting. It was the year that saw James Bond (played by Pierce Brosnan for the first time) emerge for GoldenEye after a six-year break. It was also the year of Michael Mann's Heat, Dogme 95, and the moment where Terry Gilliam scored a much-deserved hit with 12 Monkeys.
As ever, we're focusing on a few of the lesser-known films from this particular year, and we've had to think carefully about what's made the cut and what hasn't.

Balancing gritty action and emotional heart, “Real Steel” is an inspiring and visually stunning film that takes audiences on an action-packed journey. Washed-up boxer Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) scrapes by as a small-time robot-fight promoter as he tries to make a comeback. Against all odds he eventually succeeds—at least in the eyes of his son Max (Dakota Goyo). “Real Steel” is spectacular family entertainment that will have everyone cheering again and again.
At its heart, director Shawn Levy‘s Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robot movie is an old school underdog tale, with a sentimental father and son story at its core.

Real Steel is an emotional father /son bonding film filled with giant boxing robots. The film.s strength comes from the stellar CGI that makes the robot boxers seem very real and the charisma of Hugh Jackman . who is charming and loveable even while selling his son. Based on the Richard Matheson (I Am Legend) short story "Steel," the film was directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum). It features a screenplay by John Gatins (Coach Carter) with story by Dan Gilroy (The Bourne Legacy) and Jeremy Leven (The Notebook). It features a great cast including Dakota Goyo, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie, Kevin Durand, Hope Davis, James Rebhorn, Marco Ruggeri, Karl Yune, and Olga Fonda. Set in the...

Real Steel is an interesting blend of the underdog sports movie and science fiction, and from the first frame, you know exactly what will happen by the time the end credits roll. There’s nothing wrong with that since we knew exactly what was coming in Rocky or Remember the Titans and both were strong, entertaining films. The challenge for the director and cast is to make arriving at the inevitable conclusion as entertaining as possible and in this case, the film exceeded expectations.
Coming out tomorrow for home video from Touchstone Home Entertainment, the Shawn Levy-directed film looks terrific and has rock solid sound so you hear the gears grinding and Danny Elfman’s score soar with fidelity.
The story is set in 2027, a time when human boxers have been replaced by oversized robotic creations that are basically Rock’Em Sock’Em Robots controlled by a video game interface.

Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) is drunk, broke, and - to top that off - a complete jerk.
Kenton is a run-down ex-boxer now trying (and failing) to make some money in futuristic robotic boxing tournaments. He gambles to make some money at a local rodeo by using his battered robot Ambush to fight a bull (PETA frowns at this). The battle does not go very well, turning Ambush into dismembered junk and causing Kenton to lose a very expensive bet.
It's a funny thing to note that everyone in the opening scene of Real Steel are jerks. Kenton's a big jerk - that's without a doubt. The rodeo audience are also all jerks and the rodeo ringleader is big masterful jerk named Ricky (Kevin Durand). Even the...

Real Steel Directed by: Shawn Levy Written by: John Gatins (screenplay), Dan Gilroy and Jeremy Leven (story) Starring: Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie, Kevin Durand, Hope Davis, James Rebhorn Back when Real Steel was first announced, a lot of people thought it had to be a joke. Coming on the heels of a flurry of announcements about movies based on toys, this seemed like Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots brought to life on the big screen. While that may have been part of the inspiration, it's pretty clear that Real Steel probably owes the most to Michael Bay's Transformers. However, where Michael Bay continually tried to push Transformers in a more violent and "mature" direction, this movie melds giant f'n robots with a feel-good family-friendly core. And for the most part, it actually works. Hugh Jackman plays Charlie Kenton, a down-on-his-luck ex-boxer who is now a small-time promoter.

From the billboards you might think this is another Transformers movie—heaven help us—when in fact, Real Steel is a cross between Rocky and The Champ. It’s formulaic and unashamedly manipulative, but it’s played with sincerity…and it works. This project has been in development for years, under Steven Spielberg’s watchful eye, and bears only superficial resemblance to the Richard Matheson story that inspired it. (You may remember its first adaptation, as a 1963 episode of The Twilight Zone called “Steel,” with— —Lee Marvin.) The screenplay is credited to John Gatins, with story credit to Dan Gilroy and Jeremy Leven. The time…...

Real Steel

USA 2011
Real Steel is a Frankenstein Monster of a film assembled from the spare parts, overheated cliches and hackneyed plots of dozens of terrible sports movies, combined with references to real boxing matches, built on the detached spine of a Twilight Zone episode and featuring robots that look like they were designed based on a 60′s kids toy.
Or to put it simpler: it’s Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots starring Wolverine.
And God did I love it.
There is always the question when you watch a film that alternates between funny and terrible sometimes in the same scene, whether the filmmaker intended the film to be funny/terrible or whether the humour is unintentional, but I think we can safely conclude that...
