Wild Story Of Country Star Mickey Gilley & Honky-Tonk That Inspired ‘Urban Cowboy’ Set Up As Limited Series
Image
Exclusive: Paramount+ revealed earlier this week that it had a series adaptation of John Travolta movie Urban Cowboy in the works. Now, the wild, true story that inspired the 1980 film is also being developed for television.

The rise and fall of country music icon Mickey Gilley’s football field-sized Texan honky tonk is being set up as a limited series with Philip Levens, creator of Syfy miniseries Ascension and Smallville writer, serving as showrunner for a series that comes from Michael Becker of Worth producer Imprint Entertainment and Joel Carpenter of Jc Productions.

The latter pair optioned Gilley’s life rights and will tell the story of what’s been described as the “the Studio54 of the West”, the center of the cowboy universe in 1978.

With a capacity of 6,000, the largest honky-tonk on the planet was frequented by an assortment of patrons that ranged from oilfield roughnecks to movie stars.

2 Trailers for the SyFy Miniseries Ascension
Space exploration in a hot topic in Hollywood right now. Especially with Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar currently out in theaters. The SyFy Channel has a miniseries coming out called Ascension, which tells the story of a group of people who leave earth in 1963 to find a new planet that can be populated with people. The series picks up fifty years later. It definitely seems like it has basically plot idea from Interstellar, only it’s not told on such a grand scale. We’ve got two trailers for the series, as well as a detailed press release that offers up some more details on the story and who stars in the series:

In 1963, the U.S. government launched a covert space mission sending hundreds of men, women and children on a century-long voyage aboard the starship Ascension to populate a new world. Nearly 50 years into the journey, as they approach the point of no return,...

Brian Van Holt, Tricia Helfer, and Brandon P Bell in Ascension (2014)
First trailer for Syfy's space thriller 'Ascension' starring Tricia Helfer
Brian Van Holt, Tricia Helfer, and Brandon P Bell in Ascension (2014)
Syfy is returning to outer space and bringing along Battlestar Galactica's Tricia Helfer in this first trailer for its upcoming miniseries thriller Ascension. The pitch: The U.S. launches a massive space ark containing 600 people to save humanity and populate a new world, but they experience some rather serious complications. The series from writer Philip Levens (Smallville) stars Brian Van Holt as the ship's captain and Helfer as his power broker wife. Ascension debuts Nov. 24 on Syfy, and though it's billed as a limited series, I suspect if the show is successful that it could expand (like Battlestar after...

Syfy orders 'Ascension': 6-hour space opera to air Fall 2014
Syfy has ordered a 6-hour limited series, "Ascension." Set on a spaceship heading to a far-off world, the drama is set to air in the fall of 2014.

The story takes place on a starship, the Ascension, which was secretly launched in 1963 with hundreds of colonists out to populate a new world. Almost 50 years later, the ship is getting close to its point of no return when a young woman is murdered.

During the investigation, the Ascension's population begins to question the true nature of their mission to the stars.

"Syfy is more committed than ever to bringing to life epic event television," says Syfy president Dave Howe in a statement. "We are delighted to bring this thrilling, provocative and intelligent event to our fans later this year."

Syfy Announces New Mini-Series 'Ascension'
Syfy is returning to miniseries programming with Ascension, a six-hour program from Philip Levens.

Levens is no stranger to the science-fiction genre, having worked as a writer and producer on Smallville. The six-hour series will follow a community of men, women and children who were sent by the U.S. government in 1963 to travel to – and populate – a new world. The voyage is supposed to take 100 years, but 50 years into their trip, a young woman is mysteriously murdered. Following the murder, passengers question the true nature of their assignment, as they approach the point in their voyage of no return.

Ascension will be Syfy’s first mini-series since 2009’s Alice, and the network hopes that the six-hour event will lead to a potential spin-off series, similar to Battlestar Galactica. Executives also teased that Ascension will be a return to the more traditional science-fiction stories fans feel have been lacking in recent Syfy original programing.

It’s a good thing they held the event at a pier, as there is a boatload of information included in the summary press release below. We made sure to get it posted before the weekend, since it will take you the entire weekend to absorb it all.

Some of it is information we’ve already posted, like the Ringworld and Childhood’s End development and the High Moon pilot production, some of it we posted about fairly recently, like Ronald D. Will Smith at an event for Seven Pounds (2008)
Updated, 1/7: Each year, the five broadcast networks develop hundreds of scripted dramas and comedies in hopes they’ll become the next NCIS and Desperate Housewives, or the latest Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory. And like every year, a great deal of them are not worth mentioning here — mostly because they involve the bland types of cops, lawyers, and doctors who you’ve already seen fighting crime or sneaking a kiss on the way to the ER.

But fascinating projects continue to pass the first smell test at the broadcast networks. The key is whether the suits take...

NBC Adapting Comic Book Series Rest for New Drama Featuring Heroes Star Milo Ventimiglia
Since NBC’s superpowered drama Heroes was given the axe, series star Milo Ventimiglia may have found a new project to keep the network in the comic book inspired arena. Deadline reports Ventimiglia will both star in and executive produce a potential series adaptation of Rest, a comic book co-created by the actor along with Russ Cundiff and Mark Powers. Writer Philip Levens (Smallville) will adapt the comic which follows John Barrett, a guy in his late 20’s stuck in a dead-end job with no future. But when his best friend from college mysteriously resurfaces with news of a new wonder drug that replaces sleep, John falls into a conspiracy that threatens to change the course of human history. More after the jump:

Sounds like a decent high concept show, and as long as it ends up being better than NBC’s new shows from this current season, then we’re good to go.

DC at the Movies
In keeping up with the comings and goings of DC’s comic book franchises that have plans to segue to the silver screen, here we have put together Warner Bros. more recent plans on making that adaptation for some of our favorite heroes, as well as some other characters and how close we are to seeing them in theaters.

Wonder Woman

In January 2001, producer Joel Silver approached Todd Alcott to write a Wonder Woman screenplay, with Silver Pictures backing the project. Early gossip linked actresses such as Mariah Carey, Sandra Bullock, Rachel Bilson, and Catherine Zeta-Jones to the role of Wonder Woman. Leonard Goldberg, speaking in a May 2001 interview, named Bullock as a strong candidate for the project. Bullock claimed that she was approached for the role, while Lucy Lawless and professional wrestler Chyna both expressed interest. Lawless indicated that she would be more interested if Wonder Woman was portrayed as a "flawed hero.
